İlk kez 1843'te yayımlanan eserin orijinal adı The Gold-Bug. Anlatıcımız, başından bir dizi olay geçen William Legrand'ın arkadaşı. Böceklere meraklı biri olan Legrand, yardımcısı Jüpiter ile yeni tür böcekler ararken altın bir böcek tarafından ısırılır. Böceği yaşadığı eve getiren Legrand o günden beri garip davranışlar sergilemeye başlar. Yardımcısı Jüpiter de anlatıcı olan arkadaşı da bunun sebebini anlayamazlar ta ki günler sonra Jüpiter anlatıcımızın kapısını çalıp efendisinin kendisini beklediğini söyleyene kadar... Lacivert Klasikler Serisi 40-50 sayfalık kısa eserlerden oluştuğundan bu kitap da öyle. Yazarın biçemi sade. Olay örgüsü zamanı için şaşırtıcı sayılsa da günümüz için tahmin edilebilir ve biraz yavandı. Başlarda hafiften gizemli bir atmosfer yaratılabilmişti ama olaylar neticelenince kitabın pek de bir sürprizinin olmadığı gerçeğiyle karşı karşıya kalıyorsunuz. Tabii yazıldığı döneme göre ilgi çekici diyebiliriz (Bunların göstergelerini yorumun sonundaki kısa paragrafta bulabilirsiniz.) fakat günümüze kadar aynı konular defalarca kez işlendiğinden artık sıradan bir konuya sahip bir eser haline gelmiş Altın Böcek. Beklentinizi yüksek tutmayın derim. Sade bir üslupla kaleme alınmış, kısa, bir günde bitirilecek 'çerez' kitaplardan. Biraz hayalkırıklığına uğradım, daha güzel bir eser bekliyordum. Nach einem halben Jahr des Zögerns habe ich mir nun auf Netflix die Miniserie „The Fall of the House of Usher“ angesehen. Ich war skeptisch was die Produzenten aus dieser Novelle machen würden. Außerdem bin ich ein großer Poe Fan. Nun ja ich war angenehm überrascht. Gleich mehrere Kurzgeschichten von ihm wurden mit einer Rahmenhandlung verbunden zu einem stimmigen Ganzen. Modern, ein touch zu viel Blut 🩸 aber die Stimmung der Verse und die Düsternis der Geschichten kamen gut rüber. Intelligente Dialoge mit aktuellen Bezügen rundeten das Ganze noch ab. I think I had read somewhere that he was inspired by time that he spent in Monaco. He was fascinated by the casinos and the people within them. I love the album cover, which was a concept created by Kevin Godley and Lol Crème. The image of a playing card as a stained glass window, reflecting how Parsons may have thought the gamblers he observed in the casinos worship the cards, the dice, and the roulette wheel. It is like a religion to some. . 『黄金虫変奏曲』 リチャード・パワーズ 森慎一郎・若島正訳 敬愛してやまないリチャード・パワーズの第三作目。 原書の出版は1991年とそれなりに昔だが、我らが母国語で出版されたのはなんと2022年。訳者のお二人にとって、翻訳がどれほど血の滲むような作業だったかは想像に難くない......。本編とあとがきを合わせたページ数は872、もはや大半の人間が卒倒必至の殿堂入り級超鈍器本。内容に関しても、ピンチョンに引けを取らないほどの衒学趣味、類稀なる隠喩のセンス、作者のオタク気質からくる(？)専門用語濫用、今まで読んだパワーズ作品の中でも段違いに難易度が高い一冊だった。 前置きとして。 今年一月の投稿にて、アンソニー・ドーアの『すべての見えない光』が個人的本年度ベストであると明記してしまいましたが、ここに訂正いたします。今作が真の本年度ベストです、お詫び申し上げます(※またもや塗り替えられる可能性あり)。 この小説について先ず伝えなければいけないのは、読み始める前に、①バッハ作曲のゴルトベルク変奏曲、②エドガー・アラン・ポーの小説『黄金虫』、③DNAに関する知識、多岐に渡る分野についての事前学習が、人類にとってのアミノ酸並みに必須であるということ。「一々教えてられないよ、知らないんだったら置いてくね、じゃっ！！！」ってくらいさらっと、当たり前のように話が進んでいくので、最低限上記3つに関してはそれぞれどういうものなのか、あらましだけでもYouTubeなどで勉強してから取り組むと、格段に読み易くなると思う(それでも格別に読み辛い笑)。 時代を隔てた二組のカップルのラブストーリーだが、そこに夥しい数の装飾品がじゃらじゃら。遺伝子に関する研究をする為イリノイ州へとやってきた新進気鋭のポスドク、スチュアート・レスラー博士&彼の研究について&彼の愛した人の物語(1950年台)。もう一方は、ニューヨーク公共図書館で働くジャン・オデイと、大学院生兼夜はプログラマーとして働いているフランクリン・トッドの物語(1980年台)。 ある日ジャンの働く図書館に、調べてほしいものがあるとやってきたフランクリン。その調べものとは、彼の夜勤仲間であるとある男性について。若かりし頃は前途有望な科学者であったが、その後忽然と業界から姿を消した初老の彼、今はひっそりとプログラマーとして働く彼スチュアート・レスラーの人生に、一体何が起こったのか。 フランクリンからの手紙で、ジャンがレスラー博士逝去の知らせを受け取る場面から物語は幕を開ける。その後は一人称で語られるジャンの回想(彼女、トッド、レスラー三人の思い出&レスラーの訃報を聞いた後の彼女の数年間)と、三人称で語られるレスラー博士の人生が交互に描かれ、やがて壮大なこの曲は終止形(カデンツ)を迎える。 特にⅩⅩⅦ章は個人的なお気に入りで、ああこの章を読む為にここまでページをめくってきたのだ、と未だかつてない満足感に全身が震えた。 レスラー博士&彼の愛した人、ジャンとフランクリンの4人が描く2つの恋物語は、二重螺旋構造を持つDNAと基となる4つの塩基に対応していたり、エドガー・アラン・ポーの暗号解読小説『黄金虫』が遺伝子解読と結び付けられていたり、この小説自体がアリア+Ⅰ〜ⅩⅩⅩの章立て+再びアリアというゴルトベルク変奏曲と全く同じ構造であったり、更には各章の内容に関してもこの変奏曲に対応していたりと、恐るべき想像力から全てを生み出すパワーズ、まるで4つの塩基から全てを生み出す遺伝子のような彼の筆力。 至る所で、五線譜が出てきたり、標準遺伝暗号表などの科学的な表が出てきたりする。説明も、専門書かってくらいテクニカル・ターム盛り沢山。知の暴力を、持ち前のマゾ気質で蝋を垂らされ鞭打たれる感覚に変換できる自信がおありの方、兎に角もうオススメです。BGMは勿論ゴルトベルク変奏曲で、グレン・グールドのやつ。 これだけ長々とあらすじや思いの丈を述べましたが、かく言う私も全てを味わい尽くしたとは到底言えない理解に止まっています。ヒトゲノムを解読したとしてもまだまだ分からない事だらけ、そんな感じです。いつの日かまた、自分の読書経験を積み、再読に相応しいと自分の成長を感じた時に、この恐るべき豊穣の物語を読み直そうと思います。 ——— 「生存こそ非凡なる循環なのだ」 ——— 「名前の本当の用途は、扱いやすさよりもっと重大な何かでなければいけない」 (リチャード・パワーズ著『黄金虫変奏曲』、森慎一郎・若島正訳、みすず書房、2022、それぞれ558頁、698頁) 2024/3/9読了 #黄金虫変奏曲 #リチャードパワーズ #パワーズ #ゴルトベルク変奏曲 #バッハ #黄金虫 #エドガーアランポー #thegoldbugvariations #richardpowers #goldbergvariations #johannsebastianbach #thegoldbug #edgarallanpoe #読書記録 #海外小説 #海外文学 #翻訳小説 #読書好き #読書好きと繋がりたい

My new creation. The Gold Bug. The Scarab Beetle, Kheper is a symbol of the sun god Re, a sigil of rebirth and protection, as well as a good luck charm. It was an important part of funerary practices and many little scarab beetle amulets were put in the burial chamber and within the mummy itself to ensure their immortality after death. I absolutely adore the scarab beetle - I had one etched for life on my arm and I wear a little amulet too. This one of a kind original chap will be coming out soon to buy. 👻 Happy Halloween 🎃 I read a few *spooky* short stories this month. The #shortformclassics group read a pair of ghost stories, "Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You My Lad" by M.R. James that was short and creepy (3/3) and we also read "Honeysuckle Cottage" by P.G. Wodehouse which was longer but is an absolutely hilarious take on a house of horrors. I highly recommend giving it a listen (2/3). Finally, I read some Poe at the last minute for #Victober and for another classic short story selection for the #worldfullofbooks Mystery theme. My little Moby Books Illustrated Classic Edition of Edgar Allan Poe's Tales of Mystery and Terror contains "The Tell-Tale Heart", "The Cask of Amontillado", "The Fall of the House of Usher" in the first half of the book (making up the tales of terror). The second half of the book is a tale of mystery, "The Gold Bug," which I'd never heard of. I read the original from my "Complete Tales and Poems" which I'm slowly making my way through (I've read a mere 12/72 of the Tales). There was some suspense about the mysterious behavior of LeGrand after he found the Gold Bug but the ending was rather expository. I did not pause and try to solve the cryptogram on my own at the end of the story before the solution is explained but it could be fun to try if you enjoy that sort of thing. REVIEW: 🕸️🐦⬛ Note: contains spoilers Ok I know I've been going on and on about Mike Flanagan's adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's works but I just wanted to point out how brilliantly he fits in a different story line within the context of Poe's gothic horror. This is for those who have already watched the series The Fall of the House of Usher on Netflix. The storyline is completely different from Poe's stories which are referenced throughout the series but what makes Flanagan's work such a brilliant piece of visual art is the usage of Poe's main tropes. Each of the episodes are a title of Poe's stories - The Black Cat, The Pit and the Pendulum and even lines from his poems, for example A Midnight Dreary which is the title of the first episode is the first line from his poem The Raven. Although the modern story focuses on the lives of each of Roderick Usher's children and his sister and granddaughter and the consequences they have to face as a result of their actions and unfortunately for " the sins of the father" , each episode pays homage to the writer whose work so greatly inspired this film. The Raven plays a big part, appearing as Roderick's reckoner and harbinger of doom, the black cat, the Pendulum, apes, auditory hallucinations, a crumbling old mansion which symbolises the Usher mansion with a tarn in front, and of course the suggestion of madness that becomes apparent in each of the Usher children mixed in with real moments of the supernatural that again is very Poe-esque - blurring the lines between insanity and the supernatural. Overall an absolutely awesome gothic horror series- perfect for Halloween. 🐈⬛🐦⬛
MOVIE REVIEW: MIKE FLANNAGAN'S ADAPTATION OF EDGAR ALLAN POE'S THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER Note: contains spoilers. I thought I would do a movie review for a change because I recently watched Mike Flannagan's brilliant adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's best-known works; a young director who has been skyrocketing to fame since the launch of his classic series The Haunting of Hill House. His latest Netflix series, titled The Fall of the House of Usher, after Poe's famous gothic story shows a modern-day family whose fortune comes from running a pharmaceutical company. The patriarch of the Usher family and CEO of the company, Roderick Usher, faces a criminal investigation concerning numerous deaths that resulted from patients who took a drug produced by his company. In Poe's story, Roderick Usher and his twin sister Madeline suffers from various afflictions, including catalepsy. They live secluded in the Usher family mansion; a house which seems to be a visual representation of its owners' state of mind - haunted and decaying. The structure itself has a dark, foreboding atmosphere. Poe explores themes of the supernatural and insanity in this story, creating an eerie atmosphere of impending doom. In fact, one of the main tropes of Poe's writing is the use of a haunted atmosphere to convey a sense of the tragic and macabre. Flannagan uses this setting, and the main theme of this story as a backdrop for the modern-day Ushers, whose empire is sick and rotting from within, threatening to consume everybody in its wake. 🐦⬛🪦⚰️🐈⬛ I just want say that Mike Flanagan's Fall of the House of Usher was woeful, decadent, coruscant, elegiac, and inspired. I've watched a lot of adapted works of Poe, and I've witnessed greatness. Flanagan's attention to literally every detail, superb writing, acting, and the visual accoutrements of magical memento mori; left nothing to be desired. I was completely fulfilled, as an English major (yeah, yeah, laugh it up), and Poe enthusiast. It was initially difficult to start watching because the goddamn literary references and Easter eggs were so overwhelming, however, once you fall into Flanagan's world, it is impossible not to feel as though a raven were perched upon his shoulder, urging the creation along from beyond the veil.
