3.5/5 stars - I’ve had this book on reserve at the library since before summer started and it finally made its way into my life. If memory serves me correctly, I think this was one of Anne Bogel’s Summer Reading Guide picks. I can see why this would make for excellent summer reading: There are lots of twists and turns and the suspense could keep you up all night reading. (I, unfortunately, do not have the luxury of reading past my bedtime during the school year if I wish to remain cool, calm, and collected with teenagers in class the next day.) I liked the idea behind this book. I also liked how it kept me on my toes, because I really could not figure a way out for our main character and I could never predict what big reveal about a character’s past lay just around the corner. I also appreciated the moral dilemmas that our main character faced and the fact that I didn’t actually like her all the time. I’m wondering if I would have liked this more had I been able to read past my bedtime. I think this book was begging for a binge read and I was unable to comply. . #neverhaveiever #joshilynjackson #thriller #mystery #suspense #modernmrsdarcy #modernmrsdarcysummerreadingguide2019 #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booksofinsta #booksofig #igreads #readersofinstagram #teacherlife #bookcommunity #2019yearofreadingwomen #saccoffeescene #themillsacramento #booksandcoffee #coffeeandbooks #octoberreads #autumnreads @annebogel

Introducing Coco, my parents’ Chocolate Lab (original name right? 🙈). I’m taking care of Coco this weekend, and I thought she’d be perfect to make an appearance for this book! My dad rescued Coco from the shelter probably 9-10 years ago, and she wasn’t a puppy then, so she’s doing well for an old dog! She even survived the tornado that hit our house 8.5 years ago. • I have had Inheritance by Dani Shapiro on my holds list for months, ever since I saw it on @annebogel’s Summer Reading List, and I finally got it! I love memoirs, and I haven’t read anything by Dani Shapiro before, but this one was really interesting! • How would you feel if you found out 50 some years into your life that your dad wasn’t your biological dad? Especially when your ancestors and religion pay such a huge part of your life? Dani took a DNA test, and when her DNA didn’t match at all with her half sister she decided to figure out who her biological father is. Both of her parents had passed, so she had to rely on other sources to find out the missing pieces of her life. • Dani Shapiro is an excellent writer, and her story and research was very interesting. I can’t imagine her thoughts and feelings! • 4🍕/5 • #inheritancebook #danishapiro #modernmrsdarcy #modernmrsdarcysummerreadingguide2019 #bookreadinggirls #bookshark #memoir #iowabookstagrammers #cornfedread #booklover #bookstagram

I finally read The Gown by Jennifer Robson after checking it out and returning it to the library THREE times previously. Overdrive made it happen! Anyway, I enjoyed it. It was a sweet novel of post WWII friendship. I understand why so many people are in love with the book. #jenniferrobson #thegown #historicalfiction #royalweddings

If I hadn’t picked this up right before school started, I would have finished it much more quickly. It is full of action with two characters I cared about deeply. The second half of the book had me turning pages furiously, and, quite frankly, wore me out. Beautiful sense of place as well. And isn’t the cover fantastic? #bookstagram #summerstooshort #idratherbereading #modernmrsdarcysummerreadingguide2019

When I was in the hospital with my youngest daughter earlier this year, I tore through Ruth Reichl's Garlic and Sapphires, so when I saw Save Me the Plums on the #modernmrsdarcysummerreadingguide2019, I knew I had to put a hold on it immediately. Apparently everyone else in my county had the same idea, because I just got it last week. 😆 This details Reichl's tenure at Gourmet Magazine, during the last 10 years of its existence. I kind of expected 10 years to take up a few more pages, but the stories we do get are interesting and entertaining. I have to admit I liked Garlic and Sapphires better, but this was a good read. “All my life I had known there was a secret. What I hadn’t known: the secret was me.”⁣ ⁣ Spoiler alert! This review contains spoilers after the first three paragraphs.⁣ ⁣ One day, Dani Shapiro’s husband, Michael, orders them Ancestry DNA kits. Whereas he is curious about his own genealogy, Dani agrees to join him in taking the test on a whim. After all, she knows her story. She comes from a prominent and powerful Orthodox Jewish family - known and respected in both the US and Israel.⁣ ⁣ Months later, the results reveal that Dani is only 52% Eastern European Ashkenazi. She and her older half-sister Susie, who share a dad, are biologically unrelated.⁣ ⁣ Thus, at age 54, Dani begins a search for her father and the answers to long-held family secrets. Along the way, she asks herself: Who am I? To whom do I belong? Did my parents know?⁣ ⁣ One paragraph I loved, upon meeting her biological father for the first time: “I kept looking over at Ben and then away. Father. He didn’t feel like my father. He hasn’t raised me. We’d met hours earlier. So who was he to me - and I to him? Biological. Social. Later, it will occur to me that Ben Walden felt, to me, like my native country. I had never lived in this country. I had never spoken its language or become steeped in its customs. I had no passport or record of citizenship. Still, I had been shaped by my country of origin all my life, suffused with an inchoate longing to know my own land.” (p. 189).⁣ ⁣ When the dust settles, she concludes: “Genetically-speaking I was half Ashkenazi Jewish, half Anglo-Saxon Presbyterian. There could be confusion in that - or liberation. The choice was mine.”⁣ ⁣ Dani Shapiro’s writing is excellent. I liked it and I’m glad I read it upon recommendation of @annebogel in her Summer Reading Guide.⁣ ⁣ ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (3.5/5 stars).

I’ve read some reviews of this book that were less than positive. But @annebogel recommended this in the #modernmrsdarcysummerreadingguide2019, so when I saw it at the library, I picked it up. Second summer read that has lived up to the hype. Ayesha at Last was fun, funny, interesting, thoughtful, and just an all-around good read. I couldn't wait to see what happened next, even though you know what is going to happen with the main characters in the end. All of the characters were flawed, interesting, and compelling, and you just had to root for them (with a few deliberate exceptions). One of those books that you are sad because it had to end, and you just wanted it to go on. If you haven't picked this one up yet, do yourself a favor and get it ASAP. Peter and Anne are two 8th grade best friends whose lives are torn apart by a tragic event involving their families late one night in suburban NYC. This novel is about redemption, regret, addiction, mental illness, family, and forgiveness. I would say it is a fantastic multi-generational family saga told from alternating perspectives. #meridithreads2019 #kindle #MMD #modernmrsdarcysummerreadingguide2019 #kindle #sdcl #libby

So I finished my second book of the #readathon - Unmarriageable by Soniah Kamul. I took it with me to the lake this afternoon. It was on the Modern Mrs Darcy Summer Reading Guide, and I had been looking forward to it. It is a Pride & Prejudice retelling set in Pakistan, and i thought that was so compelling. But I did wish I had reread Pride & Prejudice first so that I could have appreciated all the little nuances. #modernmrsdarcysummerreadingguide2019

Another WAY TOO late night reading. I am not at all sad! ☺️ Another quick and uplifting read. Who hasn’t dreamed of starring in their own Rom-Com? Tom Hanks is the quintessential leading man. Getting ready for a garage sale has left me lots of time to listen to books the last week or so. This one was on my summer bucket list and free to listen or read on Kindle Unlimited, so I have it a shot. I am not sure if the story did not peak my interest or if it was the narrators that I did not care for. It was ehh. You know when you write a crazy-long Instagram post, but it gets deleted somehow and you can't even and just walk away? Yeah, that's what happened with my first review of Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors. 😡 . But it gave me some time to think on this book a little more, and now I'm glad it didn't post. My first review was all "BEST BOOK EVER" kind of stuff. And don't get me wrong - I really enjoyed this retelling of P&P and I'm excited that this is the first in a series of Austen retellings by Sonali Dev. Her writing style drew me in and I found so much to appreciate here (food descriptions throughout - 💯). I liked the characters a lot. It's a good story told well. . But - parts of the book felt really awkward and clumsy to me. I didn't like that several current social campaigns were stuck in - and I mean really just stuck in; they made very little sense in what was actually happening with the characters. There were times things felt forced - P&P is based on misunderstandings but some of them here were stretches. And the big betrayal at the center of the story was tough to swallow on a lot of levels. I'm hoping some of these issues get ironed out in her future writings, because as I said, this is a great story told well. If you like Austen retellings, I would recommend this one for sure - just take a few things with a grain of salt.

Evvie Drake Starts Over was the first book I've read this summer read that totally lived up to the hype. It helps that it had two of my favorite things in it - a little bit of baseball and a small coastal town. 😊 I keep trying to pinpoint what I loved about it so much, and I keep coming back to - everything. Complex, rounded, likable characters. A quaint and quirky setting/community. A great premise that fulfills its promise. An imperfect happy ending. Fantastic details. All the feels. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Time After Time by Lisa Grunwald turned out to be very different from what I expected. I am not sure what I expected, but it was not a straight-up romance. Sure, there was a hint of mysticism regarding Manhattanhenge and Nora, but the story was purely romance. This book really got my attention well the first 50 pages or so, then it took me weeks to finish it because I just couldn’t get into it enough to want to pick it up over my other books. Time After Time might be a very good book for anyone who is expecting a historical romance. I just need something more with my romances: Mystery, drama, etc. I am happy to have read this one and knocked another off my #modernmrsdarcysummerreadingguide2019 list! 5/5 stars - I finished Blake Crouch’s latest novel while flying from Paris to Madrid today. I’m glad the only person sitting next to me was my friend Lili, because I was having some pretty dramatic reactions as I read the last 25% of the novel. (Gasping, putting down my Kindle to stare at my friend in disbelief... you get the idea.) I felt like this book had a slow build, but the end where our main protagonists try and try again to save humanity had me on the edge of my seat. (Well, maybe not literally because I had to keep my seatbelt buckled.) “That’s bananas, because I could tell you were a writer from the moment I met you...You have the vocabulary of a writer, and you just...seem like you have something to say.” I get that these words in this configuration wouldn’t mean much to most women. Maybe other women would like to hear that they’re beautiful or irresistible or flawless, but for me, for someone who’s spent years feeling like she had nothing to say, this might be the kindest thing anyone’s ever said to me. ~WAITING FOR TOM HANKS 💕 Well if this wasn’t THE cutest book! Y'all. It's been a couple of days. Between therapy appointments for my 1-year-old (one of which I completely forgot about today), coordinating vacations with family and friends, and having three kids between 1 and 6 home with me all day long, I have been so overwhelmed that I've barely even looked at social media this week (not that that's a bad thing). I ended up taking this afternoon off to get my ish together. It's not all the way together yet, but solid progress was made. Whew. . In the small windows of break time, I made my way through Waiting for Tom Hanks. I liked it, but I wanted to love it. It had some really great moments and some really funny bits (dumpster bagels and "I don't drink hot liquids" at a coffee shop were favorites), but there were moments that felt forced and that I very nearly put it down and walked away. I'm glad I didn't, but it was a bit of a rollercoaster. But then, I'm looking forward to the follow-up book to this one, so... it was good enough that I want to continue the story. I finished The Unlikely Adventures of the Shergill Sisters last night, my first of the #MiminalistReadingGuide picks of 2019 from @AnneBogel. This was a 3 1/2 star for me, I’m not a huge fan of family dramas but this one moved at a decent pace (which is my usual annoyance with that genre) and ended on a hopeful note with all three main character exhibiting some growth which is something I often find lacking in these types of stories. . In this novel, the 3 Shergill sisters return to India to pay homage to their late mother and spread her ashes, following an itinerary she put together for them before she died. The sisters had grown apart, each has her own secrets and challenges that are uncovered over the course of the book and each comes away from the trip different than they entered it. . its a book I didn’t find myself drawn to while reading but one I think will grow on me in memory, so I am definitely glad I read it! . #igreads #modernmrsdarcysummerreadingguide2019 #bookish #bookworm #bookstagram #bookishcanadians #readstagram #readersofig #bibliophile #ecmmedia #india #currentlyreading #librarybook

I enjoyed this much more than I expected. I have continued to think about the characters, and how their personalities influenced their choices. It makes you think what flaws do I have which hide behind my decisions. This book can be read as a great plot driven story, or you can dive into all the author is presenting. There are so many levels, danger from nature, danger from others, and danger from self. This would be a perfect audiobook for a trip where you can discuss all this book is saying about nature, including human nature. #peterheller #theriver #modernmrsdarcy #modernmrsdarcysummerreadingguide2019 #bookstagram #whatshouldireadnext #bookworm #booknerd #ilovereading

grabbed this one from the library because it was on @annebogel summer reading guide ☀️ it took me several chapters to get into the story, but once I did, I enjoyed it! both the setting and story were different than other books I’ve read, and I enjoyed that. 4/5 ⭐️

When you match your book, you must document. I’m chugging away at all my picks from @annebogel’s summer reading guide and friends, so far, all the books are hits! Trying to convince Josh to read this one before we have to return it. What’s at the top of your summer reading list? I’d love alllll the recommendations! . #bookstagram #litsummer #summerreadinglist #modernmrsdarcyreadingchallenge2019 #modernmrsdarcysummerreadingguide2019

First summer read done. This one was a slow start for me, but both @thepopcast and @whatshouldireadnext featured it, so I stuck it out and I’m so glad I did. Beautifully written and suspenseful, though I’m not sure I ever want to go canoeing again 😉 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #theriver #bookstagram #jjohnsonreads2019 #popcastgreenlights #modernmrsdarcysummerreadingguide2019 #thatcovertho

Wow. What an amazing book! 🥰🥰🥰 Jack and Wynn have a deep, easy, beautiful friendship. I wanted to race through this book to find out what happens next and also linger over every word because #peterheller is a master of the English language. Thanks to @bookriot and @annebogel for putting this book on my radar, and to @dekalblibrary for having a copy for me to borrow. #theriverpeterheller #readharder #summerstooshort #modernmrsdarcy #modernmrsdarcysummerreadingguide2019 #readmoredcpl #bookwormlife
