My mom was 42 in this picture. My brother and I, 11 and 8. And isn’t she a radiant, gorgeous babe? When people talk about lifelong health, so often the conversation turns to genetics. “You must have good genes,” people have said to me, “especially to be so fit after kids.” (I will say, I do think have good genes, which is why I felt the need to present the evidence 😜) But staying fit after kids wasn’t just something my mom passed to me with blood. It’s something she’s always shown me in the way she lives her life. My mom didn’t exercise back then, not really - but she was active all day (both with work and with us kids). My mom never dieted, but she ate mindfully, fuelled herself well, and let us make our own food choices, without critique or comment. She didn’t hide her body under frumpy clothes, but she wore what she felt comfortable in and looked amazing every single day (and if you guys know my mom IRL you know that has never changed). The thing is, growing up, my mom was that kind of effortless, balanced, beautiful mom that made “staying fit after kids” the natural byproduct of the way she lived her life - not some burden to bear, or competitive struggle to sustain. So let me offer an unpopular opinion: genetics is surely a piece of the puzzle, but ANY of us can be healthy after kids - by cultivating a positive body image, stopping the cycles of diet culture and harmful self-talk, and taking care of ourselves with proper movement and nourishment. My mom is 73 now, and I’m 40. We wish away the tantrums, the constant fighting, the bad behavior, the non-stop laundry, and the exhaustion ALL THE TIME. We wish away every imperfect moment that makes our skin crawl. But one day, it will be over and we’ll miss it— ALL OF IT. We’ll miss the giggles, the smiles, the “not wiped off” kisses, and chubby arms and toothless grins. We’ll miss being needed, the crooked teeth, the time spent together, and hearing “Mommy look!” every two minutes. We’ll miss who we are RIGHT NOW as individuals and a family. Because soon new people will be living in our house with us. Their faces and voices will morph into someone else’s. And they’ll keep changing. And we’ll be new people, too. So, let’s try to take in ALL OF IT— the bad, hard, and the good— and not take any of it for granted. Because I guarantee, one day soon, we’ll miss THIS.
