I bought this years ago because it made me laugh. My mother was a local theater Director so I grew up with actors backstage, helping me with my homework. And yes, many she worked with were very “theatrical”. There was a lot of crying and dramatic exits from our house. But also a lot of hugging and music. I usually retreated upstairs to write. Everyone in our life - the realtor, our dentist, lawyer also were in my mother’s plays. It shocked me when I grew older and met an actual professional who did not know the lyrics to “The Impossible Dream”. It was a cozy colorful world. Later, when I got into TV writing in NYC and we cast shows, I saw a bit of the grim reality facing working actors. For every 1 happy actor, 50 went home, rejected. Sometimes just because they were a blonde when we were looking for a brunette. It’s definitely not a career for the faint of heart. This 1909 book is dedicated, with apologies, to all the starstruck actresses and relates the bleak side of touring. Like Producers who search for “lookers” for the part of Juliet. Not a care about talent. The “drinkers” in the company who never remembered their lines. The gossipy back stabbing minor players who might lash out in jealousy. Of course, there were also fun times. Because this book is ultimately a Valentine, though a bit tattered, to the theatrical profession and how to survive it. This bookshelf belonged to my grandparents, Norm & Clara, and has been in our family for many years. When I was a kid there was always a conch shell on the bottom corner shelf. I’ve been to my parents for Sunday lunch today…… they like to have us round for a roast dinner and today was rather excellent as we finished up their turkey and pork from Christmas which they’d frozen! It was like a home cooked carvery!! I thought I’d share a #sundayshelfie from my Mums bookcase. The shelving belonged to my grandma and came to my Mum’s and I love her Anya Seton collection!! She also has Jean Plaidy and Catherine Gaskin. All books which have been well loved and well read as you can tell by the spines. The Anya Seton editions are hard to find in good condition these days. It was due to my Mums bookshelf that I found a love of historical fiction. Newly - oldy in at ReUse Action. It's actually so pretty and in perfect condition that the oldly hardly applies. Its an old bookcase with glass doors. It appears to be made of mostly solid mahogany and has glass doors with 1 inch bevel-bordered old glass (which is clearer than new glass. Come and I'll show you old & new side-by-side and the difference is stark). The back is made of joined wood panels and the shelves are pine with mahogany fronts. Each one was cut by hand to fit in around the moldings and they have cast iron shelf pins. Astoundingly the classical details are completely intact and the case doesn't have a single scratch. The rail on top is delicate but in perfect shape. My favorite detail however is on the back. It is built out slightly on the sides with a little cutout at the bottom so that it fits around baseboard molding and snugs tightly to the wall. I wonder if this piece was custom built - or perhaps it's just the way things were built way back when. I see lots of modern furniture, much of it particle board with veneer....or worse plastic painted to look like wood. And don't get wrong these are cheaply made although not inexpensive to buy. Even expensive new furniture has plywood and particle board wherever it can be used. This piece is solid and beautiful in every corner, and even behind. It measures 75 inches wide, 68 inches tall and 15 inches deep. $2500 PS - it isn't full of pedestal sinks - there's just not a great angle to get a photo without those reflecting. But as you can see we have lots of those too. The average publication date is 1884 I think. Half of them were published while George Eliot was still alive. 😮 George Eliot was a remarkable writer and intellect, who wrote in a range of styles and consistently challenged Victorian social conventions: 📕She translated religious, social, and moral philosophical works from the original German, and Spinoza’s Ethics from Latin. . 📗She wrote bucolic novels like Silas Marner and Adam Bede, featuring ordinary country folk, long before Hardy did. . 📙She wrote on of the best novels in the English language, Middlemarch, and Daniel Deronda is of a similar quality. . 📘She wrote the less successful but remarkable renaissance tale Romola. Such an incredible achievement full of precise period detail (idioms, customs clothing, etc) . 📕And she also wrote a political/social criticism novel, Felix Holt the Radical. . पुराने क़िताब ख़रीदने का मज़ा कई गुना ज़्यादा है, मुझे कई बारी ऐसी किताबें मिली जिसमें लेखक के अपने हस्ताक्षर के साथ क़िताब लेने वाले का नाम लिखा मिला,कई बार किसी ने किसी को लेटर लिखा वो किताबों में मिला,कई बार किसी का किसी को याद के तौर पर लिखा हुआ नोट मिला,कई बारी नंबर मिला,कई बारी शब्दों के नीचे खींचे हुए लकीर मिले, कई बार बुकमार्क मिला और कई बार मोर के पंख मिले। इन सब को पाकर हमेशा ख़ुशी मिलती है लगता है लेखक के साथ पाठक का वज़ूद फ्री मिल रहा है जिसकी क़ीमत कम लगी हुई है। किताबों के पीले पड़े हुए पन्ने या दाग़ लगे हुए पन्ने ज़िंदगी के अनुभव की तरह लगते है। जिसे खोलने से लगता है कई ज़िंदगियों को एक साथ खोला जा रहा है। भावनायें इतनी उचाई पर होती है उस समय,पुराने किताबें और इन सब भावों के साथ कि लगता है पाठक कितनी सहजता से हर शब्द पर उँगली फेरा होगा, कितनी बार मुस्कुराया होगा ,रोया होगा और अपने भावों के समुंदर में कितने बार गोते लगाया होगा। पुराने किताबों के पन्ने अपने आप रंग बदलते है लेकिन भावनाओं के रंग तो लेखक और पाठक के परस्पर संबंध से ही बदलते है जो दिखता नहीं है लेकिन बदलाव मज़बूती से करता है। @bookhub_01 #bookworms #oldbooks #oldbookshelf #oldbookedition #bookstagram #bookstore #bookstack #books #reader #readreslife #kitab #kitabwala

A shout out to literary vicars and priests who’ve been great characters since Chaucer first picked up his quill. The Vicar of Wakefield was the Harry Potter bestseller of 1766. Written by Goldsmith and here illustrated by Rackham, it’s about a man of God, meant to live by example, who slips into debt. His life and family implodes, and he lands in prison - until Rev Primrose finds redemption. (Unlike Goldsmith who was a degenerate gambler to the end. He only wrote to make money for his vice which is lucky for posterity.) There were other wonderful men of the cloth like Friar Tuck. Or Reverend Melchizedek Howler (Dickens) who preached to his friend Jo in Bleak House about the Spirit while she starved. And R Dahl’s Rev Robert Lee, Vicar of Nibbleswicke, cursed w an embarrassing fictional back to front dyslexia, causing him to say important words in backwards order, creating comic situations. He also walked backwards with a rearview mirror strapped to his head. (This book was published after Dahl’s death in 1991 with all rights going to a Dyslexia charity.) I have a soft spot for Father Brown written by Chesterton, the priestly Miss Marple, who explains to the police, that he is the perfect man to solve crimes since he hears confessions all day long. - My DIY upcycle for old furniture - I found this old book shelf in the attic and decided to upcycle it with all the supplies that is available at home. So I have a left over white aqua proof wall paint, so I just use that to paint this old rack, and I stick the mint & pink rose wallapaper sticker of my liking and to match the theme, I made myself a Scandinavian style frame center piece by using Styrofoam from the bottom of my washing machine box and also cover it with the mint and grey wallpaper sticker. And in the center I use a huge TV box to make a furniture look alike, which actually covers up boxes my creativity supplies on the back of it. I also made a flower vase bucket on top of the black shelf that I also painted my self with a black doff wood and metal paint, I turned a used paint bucket and put sticker with wood patterns on it to be my DIY flower bucket. And for the other wall, I just painted white only for the wall frames, and inside the frame, I applied white stripy stickers, and for the bottom part I use 3D wall panels, and for the plywood room divider, I paint the frame black and apply the minty pink roses wallsticker to match it up. Happy Birthday Hans Christian Andersen! I had to squeeze in a celebration post. You told us “everything you look at can become a fairytale and you can get a story from every thing you touch”. If I had a motto, this is it. I mean, embroider it on a pillow and done. You had a rough start in life. You were insecure, anxious, dirt poor and never quite fit in - so you wrote breathtaking stories out of loneliness and fear. You created a peacock’s tail of color and emotion out of very little. And those stories have endured. Since I collect antique fairytale books, I’ve written a lot about Andersen, and shown other editions of his books but I love the outsiders in his fairytales- the little mermaid, the ugly duckling, Thumbelina in a world of giants. When they were planning a sculpture for Andersen near the end of his life, he rejected the sketches of children on his lap, hanging on him as he read, adoring. Like a beloved storytelling grandpa. He said that is not what he was seeking. He wrote for adults as much as children so his stories could be enjoyed twice in life. Andersen didn’t want adoration. He wanted to be heard and understood. All his life, he was much more the child hearing a story with wonder than he ever was the grandfather figure spinning tales. Here are favorite books of his and art by the brilliant Irish artist Harry Clarke who illustrated Andersen. You’ll see it if you go there. A pile of shoes and old socks marks the grave of Dobby the Elf on Freshwater West Beach in Wales. He died here in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, saving Harry’s life. Devoted Dobby fans, from all over, sought out the film site, and built a shrine to this fictional elf. Fearing the many sox and stones would harm the beach’s ecosystem, locals let the shrine stay, but offerings are no longer permitted. So if you’re in the area, it’s a 10 minute walk from the car park. Marked by a stone that says Here Lies Dobby The Free Elf. There’s also a grave for the fictional #ebeneezerscrooge in Shrewsbury. This is courtesy of Clive Donner, who in 1984 directed A Christmas Carol film, which was shot there with this grave used in the movie and never removed. I’m sure it gets a lot of visits at Christmas. James Bond’s grave is in the remote Faroe Islands. Visitors can even take a James Bond tour of the Islands, led by a local sheep farmer. But Bond had his final act there. Sometimes characters are so real to us, when they die, it feels right to mourn them. Even if they’re fictional. This beautiful 1908 vintage book on Yorkshire, designed by the great Albert Turbayne has a fold out map and art by landscape painter Gordon Home. (Swipe) It includes Haworth - the place where one of my favorite authors is buried, Emily Brontë. Her dog Keeper led the funeral procession. 🥲 Is there a character who died who you truly mourned? Not my prettiest books. One is held together with twine. But I love the Noel Pocock art. Not exactly Edmund Dulac pretty but the expressive faces tell the whole story. Plus I love the weathered shabby cover of a mythical castle. You can almost feel grooves from other hands that have held this book through the years. Beautiful to me. It’s fascinating- the concept of beauty. What the Beholder beholds as beautiful. And the standards of beauty change from generation to generation. Beauty pageants used to have contestants submit their x-rays to show how good their posture was. At one time that was more valued than a slender figure in a swimsuit. Ancient Greeks believed redheads were the most special but also that they would turn into vampires after they died. Being a beautiful Queen in Thailand sadly came with no perks…in 1880 the Queen of Thailand drowned while her horrified law-abiding subjects watched, because they were forbidden to touch her. And while we’re talking about a standard of supposed beauty, we can’t forget Barbie with her freakishly teeny waist. I always wondered what her full name was. If she even had one. Or was she doomed to be a cutsie nickname far into her great grandmom years. (And for those randomly curious too, it’s Barbara Millicent Roberts.) Today I put a few snowdrops in a bud vase. They last no longer than a song but little dots of beauty in your day… a checkerboard of sun on your bed, a blue and white tea cup, the familiar laughter of a friend and some good books- these are all lovely grace notes that, spread through your day, make it so much better. One year later, standing in solidarity against the war in the Ukraine. Because I run a children’s theater, I feel exceptionally sad for the sudden growing up the Ukrainian kids have had to do. A year ago their world was filled with friends, games, joys and thousands of ordinary and beautiful things that make up a typical kid’s life. A year later their lives are in tatters, with uncertainty the only certain thing. This can happen to any country. It should not. We are supposed to be better than this. Praying for peace. It’s like Emerson said we were meant to live in the sunshine, swim in the sea and drink the wild air. Be free. And read beautiful books like this lovely 1903 book filled w art and poems for children. What do Dickens and a California IT worker have in common? Shayne Baggs recently won a prize from The Dickens Code Project which released an indecipherable letter written by the author to the public, appealing for help interpreting it. It seems Dickens, when writing, used a chaotic mix of symbols and out dated stenography. The confusing 1859 note is known as the Tavistock letter since it was written at the home where he wrote Bleak House. The letter was released to the public and downloaded 1000 times w puzzle lovers and coders aiming for the £300 prize which Shayne, a coder from California, won. What did the deciphered letter contain? Notes for a new book? Actually, it concerned a feud between CD and his Household Works publishers. Dickens, newly divorced, w 10 kids to support was upset by the media bashing he was getting from the split which threatened his livelihood. He wanted to put an article defending himself in Household Works. But his publishers refused on moral grounds. Dickens, threatened to break away and start his own publication if they didn’t. This note was his plea for support which fell on deaf ears. So Dickens walked. An angry Dickens started his own publication, All The Year Round, w A Tale of Two Cities. It became a huge success while Household Works, without Dickens, closed. With the thousands of pages Dickens wrote, no wonder his hand writing was not the best… at least his book writing was genius. A Tale of Two Cities is my favorite Dickens book. I'm currently on a mission to replace every book I've misplaced (aka lent to someone who didn't give it back) lost in the 2008 floods, or read on Kindle or Audio. I have no idea what happened to my original copy of The Passage, but it's taken me about six years to find one the same size as the other two, and be able to afford it at the same time. My super-power would be flying. I love birds. When fairy wrens lay their eggs, bigger birds often take over their nests for their own egg-laying. However, the fairy wren has adapted by singing a distinctive song to its eggs. Once hatched, the babies that sing that tune back to their mother, get fed by the wren, while the interloper babies are ignored. Tiny hummingbirds wisely build their homes near hawk nests because their predators are fearful of hawks and steer clear. There’s always a way for the underdog to win. A way for us to adapt to get what we need. That is one of the fundamental lessons in fairytales. And here’s an odd fact about Charles Darwin who first advanced this theory of adapting to the mainstream. We all know his famous book Origin of the Species but, at the time, his book The Formation of Vegetable Mould Through The Action of Worms sold much better when first released. Who knew? Do you know the only fictional character to have a New York Times obituary? Both Gertrude Stein and Nabokov liked writing in a parked car. Truman Capote had to be sprawled in bed to crank out pages. Agatha Christie enjoyed creating stories in her bath. Incidentally, she disliked her creation, Poirot, calling him “a detestable, bombastic, egocentric little creep”. But he was so beloved by readers he earned an obituary in The NY Times. Shakespeare, who enjoyed writing at the theater, liked his characters, but detested the word ‘also’, only using it four times in all his many works. He was one of the few writers who never did a first draft – he just wrote the play. Playwright Edna Ferber suggested the ideal view for daily writing, hour on hour, is “the blank brick wall of a warehouse. Failing this, a stretch of sky will do, cloudless if possible”. Theodore Dreiser, who got much of his writing done on ship voyages, sailed back from Europe on a ship called Kroonland. Fortunately, he was also a cheapskate and was too miserly to pay for passage aboard the Titanic. Sometimes the Muse visits more often when you’ve found the right spot. It’s a special vintage Valentine’s Day for some of us collectors so I’m spotlighting the great fairytale writer, Hans Christian Andersen who sadly, always felt like an outsider. A perpetual ugly duckling in a sea of swans. He was full of fears. He always carried rope w him so, in case of fire, he could escape out a window. He also was so terrified of being buried alive, he kept a note by his bed which said “I only appear to be dead.” Though he never married, H constantly fell for unavailable women like opera singer, Jenny Lind, who though flattered, quickly relegated him to the friend zone. No wonder he loved characters like the Little Mermaid who yearned for her prince, from the impossible depths of another world. This wonderful 1869 fairytale book features 24 vivid color plates printed by Kronheim, a lithograph co., first to use zinc engraving for more colorful art. Shown here with antique Sari fabric remnants, found at a flea market, which I use for bookmarks for a double dose of vintage today. Do you do this? In January I clear out my clothes closets. Lately it’s like visiting a museum. Many clothes that don’t fit from my Manhattan life I’ve kept because of the wonderful moments I spent in them. The pink coat I wore when I met my husband. A vintage jacket scored at the 26th St. Flea Market after a Sarah Jessica Parker sighting. The bulky knit sweater I put around my dad‘s shoulders in the hospital. Strappy shoes that are impossibly high but danced me, like The Red Shoes, through parties at the Rainbow Room. It’s harder to let go of books - even old paperbacks I’ve re-read so many times the pages are now soft as rose petals. Donna Leon’s Venetian Mysteries that I discovered on my first trip to Europe. Or that copy of Pema Chodron’s When Things Fall Apart I found in an airplane seat. A timely message from the book gods for me. As you get older what’s hardest is losing the people who know your stories. These books and clothes were that. A piece of time I loved. But slowly I am learning to take pictures of things so I can free them and myself …trusting special moments like those will come again…in another outfit, another page turned. And in return, someone else gains something too, imbued w a little second hand magic. This beautiful blue book has the magical title and illustrations that I collect. Because when we collect, we aren’t just collecting things, we’re collecting dreams and memories and that is our most valuable currency.
