Originally published in 1900, Walter William Skeat’s Malay Magic was conceived as a comprehensive description of Malay beliefs, folklore and customs. Among other things, it covers customs and rites relating to various aspects of the natural world. For example, Skeat writes about how Malay pawang (shamans) detect perfumed agarwood (also known as eaglewood), or locally, gaharu.. The perfume is created by a disease that infects the inner heartwood of the aquilaria tree, making it impossible to tell if a tree is valuable from the outside, hence the need for a pawang. Whenever a new settlement was founded a shrine would be erected for the spirits of that place to honor them and ensure their protection. It was believed that Kami could be found everywhere, that no place in Japan was outside their dominion. Shinto encompasses the doctrines, institutions, ritual, and communal life based on Kami worship. The ideal of Shinto, central to this study, is a construct in which a monarch rules through rituals for the Kami, a priestly order assists the sovereign by coordinating rituals, and the people who fulfill their obligations to the collective are in turn blessed by the Kami. Center and periphery join together in untroubled harmony through this theatre of state. I don’t know what I don’t see—what I don’t fear!’ • Okay @thehaunting made me emotional again over something I was just expecting to be spooked by. • I absolutely loved #thehauntingofhillhouse and now I absolutely love #thehauntingofblymanor 👻 In both cases I watched the show before reading the books, and I think in this instance it was the best plan, though usually I’m highly against doing that. The Haunting of Bly Manor was such a clever, intricate, emotional series and I fell into the characters stories, tried to keep my eyes peeled for the ghosts in the corners, and cried so hard at the end. Today was an intese yet super rewarding working day. Two editors came from #oxfordunipress together with a research executive from headquarters to work with upper-secondary school teachers of #treviso . It was enriching to listen to the teachers' ideas, suggestions and comments and we all left being better professionals than when we went in.
