In this the tenth Oz novel we follow Inga, the Prince of a small island called Pinagree, which is outside of the boundaries of the magical land of Oz. After his parents and people are kidnapped; guided and protected by three magical pearls Inga goes with his new and unusual friends King Rinkitink and Bilbil, the talking and surly goat, to rescue them. The people of Pinagree were taken and enslaved by the ruthless and mean King Gos and Queen Cor of the islands of Regos and Coregos. With the pearls, Inga and his friends prove difficult foes for the King and Queen, so they take their royal Pinagree prisoners to the Nome King for protection. Inga and his friends follow, which is where they meet Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz. Like a few of the stories so far, the book should be called Prince Inga as he is the main character, not Rinkitink. Rinkitink is an interesting character, but I wasn't a fan of his numerous songs. The story was magical in parts, but others parts felt a little dark for a children's book. For this, I chose The Scarecrow of Oz (1915) by L. Frank Baum & I basically had to be faithful to the book. In The Scarecrow of Oz, the main characters are a little Californian girl, Trot, her sailor friend Capโn Bill & the Scarecrow. All meet & encounter other characters such as Flipper the Ork & Blinkie the witch (other characters as well). โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ Book number 82 of the year: content warnings for corporal punishment, fire, drowning and kidnapping. The characters of Trot and Cap'n Bill have been in other L. Frank Baum stories, but none that I have read. The authors' introduction to the Scarecrow of Oz discusses how Oz fans wanted Trot and Cap'n Bill to live in the Emerald City so he wrote the ninth Oz story about them. And it is more about them than the Scarecrow, so like some of the other books, the name isn't the most apt. Young Trot and her friend and mother's lodger Cap'n Bill start their new adventure by travelling through a whirlpool. They meet a few characters along the way including the Ork, Button-Bright and then the Scarecrow who unite to help a gardeners boy and a young princess become King and Queen. The new characters are lovely and the plot is fun and interesting. The Oz books all have magic and a sense of creative adventure in them. Looking back at the entire Oz franchise, I notice Scarecrow is paired off with a lot of love interests. In the original books, he was with Patchwork Girl. The filmmakers of the Wizard of Oz wanted to pair him up with Dorothy which is why she tells him "I'll miss you most of all." And in Wicked, he has Glinda wanting to marry him and he ends up with Elphaba at the end. Scarecrow's got a lot of girlfriends in this franchise. So I made a comic about Elphaba confronting all of them and apologizing in her own way. Review: The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum Loved it. Absolutely loved it. Now I get it's not the best piece of literature ever written but it is pure magic and since I enjoyed every little second of it, -why wouldn't I count it to my new absolute faves. This beautiful copy includes 3 Oz Books but this review will for now only be about The Wizard of Oz. Speaking of the edition, it really is very artsy and pretty, just to mention it again. Dorothy is kinda boring, I'll admit that but the creatures surrounding her are all very interesting and have enough to offer to never be bored. Similar to reading Alice in wonderland, I feel like Wizard of Oz had such a big impact on pop culture that on every page, you'll encounter someone or something iconic; like the lying Wizard himself, the Cowardly Lion, the scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, the silver (Yes, silver not red) shoes, the golden cap, the good and wicked witches, the emerald city,... the list goes on and on. I don't often vibe with 'cute magical stories' but this one worked. And although it is a cute story, there were also more deaths that expected. And I mean final deaths. Just not for the main characters of course ;) I have a question for Tin Woodman tho: so, he says he wants a heart because he originally fell in love with a girl but then couldn't love her anymore - which is cute- but then he later gets a heart again, he never returns to that girl. Guess he preferred to rule the Winkies. ๐ Anyway, there isn't a lot i can say about this one that hasn't been said before. I loved it and now excuse me cause I have to read more about Dorothy's others adventures in Oz. See ya! *imagine me clicking my silver shoes together* Let me know your thoughts on the wizard of oz! In this story, the seventh in the Oz series, a young munchkin named Ojo the unlucky, a patchwork girl called Scraps and a glass cat called Bungle need to find the ingredients to save Ojo's uncle and the Crooked Magicians wife after they were accidentally turned to marble. Scraps and Bungle were created using the Powder of Life, as well as Vic the phonograph who everyone dislikes due to his bad selection of music. We meet several creatures along the yellow brick road including a new character called the Woozy, as well as the Shaggyman, Dorothy, Ozma and the Scarecrow who have been in the stories before. The journey to discover the potion ingredients takes up a large portion of the book and the end comes up rather suddenly. Ojo, rather than Scraps is the central character of the story and the one leading the adventure, so I'm not sure why the tale was named for the patchwork girl. I rewatched the 1939 โWizard of Ozโ film recently and have found myself obsessing over the franchise again! What most people donโt know is that the Wizard of Oz was originally a book series. I have always thought that the books original illustrator, John R Neill drew the Tin Woodsman (also known as Nick Chopper) so beautifully! He is truly the peak of character design, so I of course had to draw him in my art style. 2023 Photo Dump part 3: The Wizard of Oz books So my New Year's resolution for last year was to read more, because it's something I don't really do. The only Oz things I knew about were the movie with Judy Garland, the Disney movie with a pumpkin head guy, an anime from the 80's and the musical Wicked. I picked the Oz books because I knew there were a bunch of them. I was only able to read four books, because I don't live in a quiet place for reading. There were sometimes I was able to read at this one bar. At that bar no game audio was on that got in the way of my reading. The Wizard of Oz, most people know what happens in this book because of the famous MGM movie. Here's two things that are in the book and not in the movie. Dorothy and friends are being chase by a bear with the head of a tiger. The slippers are silver not ruby, hear that change was made for the movie because it look better in color. The Marvelous Land of Oz, the book with no Dorothy. This one is about the lost princess of Oz, Ozma. Jack Pumpkinhead is in this one, a character I remember from the movie Return to Oz. Ozma of Oz, in this one Dorothy finally meets Princess Ozma. There's some creatures they meet named wheelers, they have wheels on their bodies for moving around. They also meet a princess that has a collection of heads, she likes to wear different heads. Each head causes her to act like a different person. Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy visits his cousin Zeb in California and a earthquake happens. They both fall down into a opening in the ground and arrive in a land of plant people. Eureka (Dorothy's ๐ฑ) and Jim (Zeb's ๐) start to talk in this new land. Dorothy is also reunited with the Wizard of Oz. The Characters of Oz book is a collection of essays by those who are well familiar with the world of Oz beyond the movie. I canโt this will be a favorite read, but more of an interesting one. Finally, I got a Wizard of Oz alternative book โThe Fairytale Life of Dorothy Galeโ. I had found out about this book months ago and was very interested in how it will spin the characters around from how we know them. Thatโs all the Oz stuff for now, and yeah, Iโm still reading the Barnstormer book, not a bad read so far. I just received an early Christmas gift from a friend, Philip Jose Farmerโs โA Barnstormer in Ozโ. Philip Jose Farmer was an author whose books leaned more toward science fiction than fantasy hence what genre this book is in. Itโs also one of those Alternate Oz sequel books that only have the first book as its start. Itโs finally here, Eric Shanowerโs literal biggest book to date, โAll Wound Up: The Making of The Tik-Tok Man of Ozโ. So you all remember about a month ago I talked about โOz Before the Rainbowโ about the plays & silent films that came out before the MGM film? Well that book went into a little detail but not too great a detail on โThe Tik-Tok Man of Ozโ. Now this book is huge, and thatโs an understatement, when you compare it to a regular Oz book of mine. Just from the back, you learn about Baumโs creation of the play, its history and production, hundreds of photos of the show, creators, and cast. How the producer challenged the theatrical establishment, as well as surviving scripts of the play. Thereโs also a large biography in the back of the composer. So yeah, this will definitely take me a while to read. Congrats to Eric Shanower and David Maxine for putting this together. Theyโve got a lot more Oz and Non-Oz books over on their site, Hungry Tiger Press including this book. These will probably be my last Dennis Anfuso Oz related books I post here as other ones he wrote arenโt exactly connected to the land of Oz. โThe Love Magnet of Ozโ follows 4 kids who find what they think is the love magnet from the land of Oz and are of course taken to Oz and 3 of them donโt have the best of times there for a reveal that I saw coming beforehand. The other Oz book is much shorter called โStolen to Oz: Toto and Miss Jennie in Oz (without Dorothy)โ This one has a character that is & isnโt Miss Gulch like the MGM movie and a character that is & isnโt Professor Marvel from the MGM film due to copyright reasons. Miss Grierson and Doctor Fiddledog take a ride with Toto in a balloon ride right into Oz and itโs pretty short but fun. I might be the first person on here to talk about Ron Baxley, Jr.โs Oz books, or maybe Iโm not. Letโs just get into โThe Talking City of Ozโ. Dorothy Gale one day casually wishes that the oldest castle in the Emerald City could talk and that the old Wizard himself could find love. Then, Ozma gets kidnapped and Dorothy is on an adventure with the Wogglebug and some talking flies. Now while this can fit with the modern Oz books, such as those by The Royal Publisher of Oz or Hungry Tiger Press, there are things in this book that donโt quite fit. Most notable is that the Wizard gains a love interest and is constantly called O.Z. Diggs instead of just Oscar or the Wizard. L. Frank Baum lived most of his life in California after writing the first Oz book and then the following thirteen books at his house in California called Ozcot where he also kept exotic birds. After Baumโs death his widow lived her remaining years there until her own death in 1953. Unfortunately after she died the house was torn down and the second picture is what resides there now. I kind of wish someone could recreate the house somewhere else in real life. Current read: Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige. โข This book has been sitting in my room for a few months now, I totally forgot about it until my co-worker started talking about it yesterday. She definitely intrigued my interest so I have to bump it up to my next read! Keeping my fingers crossed this series is good!
โThe Astonishing Tale of the Gump of Ozโ is the second book Iโve read that was written & illustrated by Dennis Anfuso, the first Iโll post another time, but this one was charming to say the least. A boy named Matty Messina finds a talking broomstick while in Maine with his family & discovers that it actually comes from Oz. Matty travels to Oz, and goes on an adventure with Scraps the Patchwork Girl & a new character named Cassie the turkle, a turkey turtle. While thatโs going on, Ozma & Jack Pumpkinhead go on their own secret adventure with the Tin Woodman to break an enchantment. Now I did receive a card for this book like the last one, but I canโt find it at the moment. Iโll try & post it on the next Dennis Anfuso book. This is an enjoyable book, I am a little mixed on Dennis Anfusoโs art. He was born in Sweden and came to Lindsborg to study with Birgen Sandzen. He was an amazing artist! (I have one of his pieces โค๏ธ) The second pic is of a GORGEOUS Rollin Karg large dichroic paperweight. I'M A QUITTER I love Wizard of Oz soooo, a dark retelling!?!? Yes, please. Sign me up! Won't even have to twist my arm. And I tried. I really really did. But there's a couple things that I can't read without f'in myself up in the head. If you intend to read this don't keep reading my review cuz I'm about to spoil some of it. . . . . . . . Dorothy Gale ..oh sweet Dorothy...yeah, she's a needle junkie in this book and it doesn't just gloss over it. No. Her arm is a mess and she has infected puncture sites that she claws at repeatedly. She's raging with fever, more than likely from dirty needles and the familiarity was way way too much for me. I'm a junkie. I've been clean for a long while but man oh man, I can't read this crap. I can't. Give me blood and gore and craziness but please leave the dope and needles out of it. I can't hang. So, I tapped out at about 60% I tried to read it cuz it honestly was dark and gritty and creative. I just couldn't. I got a pretty great Christmas haul this year. While this isnโt everything, it is some stuff I decided to share. First up is Stephen Kingโs โFairy Taleโ which is very long and will take me a while to read. โOnce There Was A Bearโ by Jane Riordan with art by Mark Burgess is a Winnie-The-Pooh prequel book to the book series. I really love the art by Burgess the most in the ones Iโve read. โThe Haunting of Bob Cratchitโ and โMiss Marleyโ are both Christmas Carol inspired books that Iโll definitely enjoy reading after the seasonโs over. An Oz book trilogy called โThe Dark Witch Risingโ looks seems pretty good and itโs placement in the Oz timeline is probably hard to pin down as are a lot of Oz books. Some paperback Oz classics by the team of Ruth Thompson and John R. Neill. And two, yes two Oz inspired shirts. I spent a while online trying to find some good Oz shirts that Iโd really liked and these two came up. I had to be very specific on those. So yeah, this may or may not be the last post I do until the new year.
