It's a vertiginous window into the gritty realities that these workers face on the streets. The film doesn't shy away from showing the rough and often distressing aspects of this work, but it also suffers for that reason because by failing to offer some compelling dramatic twists on its grim and violent atmosphere, the experience becomes wearisome and repetitive. Not that I personally recoil from a plot that comes to feel so heavy-handed in its bleakness, but when there is no plot variety, the film can become overwhelming, and not in a satisfying way. Despite some occasional missteps and exaggerated bits and pieces, Asphalt City proves itself to be quite convincing. Les films de Jean-Stephane Sauvaire sont marquants mais ils ne sont clairement pas destinés à tout le monde, tant ils regardent la violence de façon crue et brutale, en étant des expériences éprouvantes à la fois pour leurs personnages et pour le public. Du documentaire sur les gangs colombiens Carlitos Medellin aux enfants soldats de Johnny Mad Dog, de l'histoire du prisonnier anglais se battant dans les geôles thaïlandaises d'Une prière avant l'aube à cette plongée dans le quotidien d'urgentistes opérant dans les pires quartiers de New-York, Sauvaire, filmant ses fictions comme s'il était toujours dans un documentaire, parvient à retranscrire des parcours et des trajectoires passant par le pire, et qui cherchent souvent une voie de rédemption, une issue. Il en dit à ce titre beaucoup sur la nature humaine, pour peu qu'on soit prêt à le suivre sur ces chemins difficiles. Son Black Flies ne déroge donc pas à la règle, et s'il s'est complètement immergé dans le quotidien des ambulanciers, c'est pour mieux retranscrire leur sentiment d'abandon général par la société, alors même qu'ils se retrouvent confrontés aux effets les plus délétères de la misère, de l'exploitation et de la violence (le film est d'ailleurs tiré d'un livre racontant l'expérience d'un urgentiste New-Yorkais). Il utilise un personnage (le jeune Tye Sheridan, l'innocence parfaite) dont le nom lui même est porteur d'une allégorie ("Ollie Cross", la sainte croix, soulignée par sa veste aux ailes d'ange) faisant équipe avec l'expérimenté mais désabusé Rut (Sean Penn, qu'on retrouve dans ce qu'il sait faire de mieux), qui va se retrouver plongé dans cet univers de souffrance, avec tout pour basculer dans le désespoir, cette dimension opératique étant d'emblée signifiée par l'utilisation de la magnifique ouverture de L'or du Rhin de Wagner. Et il pose des questions morales très justes, tellement actuelles, sur la vie, la mort, et le droit ou non de décider à la place des autres. Me gustó muchísimo esta película que pasó desapercibida el año pasado, por muchas razones. Primero me gustó mucho el cast. Sean Penn viene eligiendo mal sus últimas películas y tiene un gran talento que volví a ver en esta película, demostrando lo gran actor que es. Y por otro lado, Tye Sheridan es otro de los actores que en estos últimos años ha crecido a pasos agigantados. Por otra parte el haber contado esta historia, de estos paramédicos, donde muestra si bien en forma muy lenta, porque es una película muy lenta, pero efectiva, lo que son las noches de guardia de estos paramédicos mostrando los diferentes casos de las llamadas de emergencias a altas horas de la noche y los diferentes pacientes con los que tienen que lidiar cada noche. Eso le dió realismo y nos mostró, más allá de la historia secundaria de cada uno de ellos, porque es una película y tienen que contar una historia, el haber mostrado crudamente lo que son los casos que tienen que atender cada vez que salen a patrullar la noche con la ambulancia. Somos testigos de decisiones difíciles, pérdidas de pacientes, tensiones en el lugar de trabajo y dinámicas de relaciones personales. Algo que también hacen hincapié acá es la parte psicológica a la que tienen que atravesar estos paramédicos, el tener que lidiar mentalmente con los diferentes casos. Eso es algo importante a tener en cuenta, porque al fin y al cabo son seres humanos, con problemas personales también. Y la película muestra eso, la presión de saber que ellos son lo único que puede impedir que una víctima se convierta en una víctima mortal. Para mi, esta película es demasiado buena como para esconderla como lo hicieron. Mud was released in the USA on 26th April 2013. Director Jeff Nichols came up with the concept for the film in the 1990s. While still a student, Nichols began developing the story, inspired by Mark Twain’s works, including the 1876 novel Tom Sawyer.
Felt authentic. 7/10. Didn’t know anything about this. Pretty chaotic start with high tension. The shaky camera work and heavy breathing added to that. Shocked to see Mike Tyson. The movie did feel real. It didn’t appear forced to make it more engaging; rather, it simply depicted the day-to-day life of a paramedic. While it may not be the most memorable, I appreciated its realism. Throughout the film, various elements are introduced to the plot, including events outside of work life, particularly in the first half. But really it all revolved around work. It’s like a buddy cop movie, but with paramedics. We witness tough decisions, patient losses, workplace tensions, and personal relationship dynamics. At times, it’s quite graphic. The movie does pretty well at effectively portraying how the job can affect one’s mental well-being. I’m curious about the symbolism behind the wings—both the painting and the jacket. It started feeling quite lengthy, especially in the third act. The tense nature of the film's structure is apparent from the opening scene where Ollie is assigned to train with veteran paramedic Gene whose off the book methods initially surprise the good-natured Ollie who only wishes to help people in his profession. There is a consistently realistic tone to the slice of life plot that involves everything from Ollie being confronted by gang members when he tries to save a rottweiler who bit a child to Ollie nearly fighting another racist paramedic Lafontaine (Michael Pitt) for a workplace prank. What holds the film together is the two very good lead performances from Tye Sheridan and Sean Penn who have good on-screen chemistry as the paramedic mentor and mentee and their dramatic monologues going over their backstories are by far the most effective parts of the film. The film never loses a sense of tension due to its engaging filmmaking style that relies on close up shots and quick cut edits to effectively showcase the tense nature of the paramedic job where the only comedy comes from paramedics trying to get a racist homeless woman out of a dry cleaners. Despite the lack of structure in its first half, Asphalt City works in providing Ollie and Gene a number of tense situations regarding dealing with domestic abuse and psychiatric patients who try to refuse treatment that are edited together with random interludes to show how paramedic calls may all blend together. There is also just enough character development regarding Ollie with his dreams of attending medical school and Gene trying to find time to see his daughter (Rating in Comments)
