A little appreciation of the charming Persicaria (aka Bistort). Its pretty, rather delicate, bee-attracting flower spires seem almost to float above its mass of green leaves. Hardy and perennial, it has a dense, clump-forming habit useful for weed exclusion. Often seen growing wild, Persicaria also comes in many cultivated forms, some sun loving and others happy to populate damp, dappled or shady areas. A "neglected" corner of my garden sprouted a tapestry of spring flowers. Previously a spot overgrown with brambles - they are now controlled with periodic strimming which enabled all those ephemerals to flower. English native bluebells and wood anemones are mingling with lesser celandine with an odd viola are good sources of early pollen for insects and brighten the woodland floor. So don't be afraid to let a bit of your garden go wild and see the magic it brings to biodiversity. Let nature surprise you!

I never pull up my last years plants until they’ve sprouted (for psb style shoots) and I always leave some to go to flower. There are many reasons... all brassicas do this and the sprouting shoots are delicious and something you can’t buy in the shops. The bees love the flowers and need all the early forage they can find. These will also produce seeds, which you can save and grow again next year. The mustard plants you see here are from last years saved seed. They call pleurisy root butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) but it's a bit of a misnomer because unlike other Asclepiadaceae (e.g. common milkweed), this plant. . . has no milk! It does have a rich flower that feeds the honeybees, though, and for that I give thanks. Somebody was worrying so much about cold stratification--was it working if the temperatures were getting to the 60's in the daytime, etc. But that's the gist of cold stratification--when temperatures oscillate the seed swells and contracts, cracks open, and reveals its previously hidden glories. A fantastic way to help support honeybees and other pollinators is to plant a pollinator friendly garden consisting of wildflowers and flowering shrubs and trees. Because bees have relatively shorth tongues, open, single flowering flowers, suit them best. Fuchsrote Sandbienen auf meiner Johannisbeere😍 Gut, diese Art auf der Johannisbeere anzutreffen ist nicht verwunderlich, Johannisbeeren gehören zu ihren absoluten Lieblingspflanzen. Auch der Name Fuchsrote Sandbiene ist alles andere als verwunderlich. Was ich allerdings sehr verwunderlich finde ist, dass ich sie dieses Jahr das erste mal bewusst in meinem Garten sehe. Vor ein paar Tagen habe ich das erste mal eine bewusst wahrgenommen und heute habe ich direkt fünf Fuchsrote Sandbienen an meiner großen alten Roten Johannisbeere entdeckt. Wie konnten mir diese großen, auffällig gefärbten Bienen, die dazu bei mir im Garten recht häufig zu sein scheinen bisher nicht auffallen? Zumal ich sehr viele Johannis- und Stachelbeersträucher in meinem Garten habe. Habe ich sie eventuell für Hummeln oder Mauerbienen gehalten oder habe ich einfach nicht darauf geachtet? Übrigens ist die Fuchsrote Sandbiene nicht die einzige Wildbiene, die die Johannisbeere zu schätzen weiß. Auf dem letzten Bild hat sich noch eine andere Art, ich glaube auch eine Sandbiene eingeschlichen.
