There's no lack of damp soil anymore after 9 months of rain in the west of Ireland. 2. Speckled Wood, butterfly. 3. Lathyrus vernus alboroseus, ideal for woodland Gardens. 4. Coronilla valentina glauca 'Citrina'. For a sheltered position, it needs protection on winter. As a rule, all Caherhurley plants are very hardy, but we couldn't resist growing this more or less tender, fascinating winter flowering botanic delight. 5. Saxifraga rotundifolia. The drooping plumes of flowers are delicately greenish-cream-white and beautifully fragrant. Some petals even have a cute light maroon hint on tips. We've been sharing our Citrus tree in the nursery with a few hungry little Orchard Swallowtail caterpillars. They are technically considered a pest, but they don't eat much and while they remain within our damage thresholds we are happy to live in peace together, with the reward of beautiful swallowtail butterflies to come. It's so important to support our pollinators, try to remember not every insect needs to be eradicated, its a balance. These particular little caterpillars are pretty interesting. They begin life cleverly disguised - resembling a little black/white bird poo, slowly turning green like this one. When threatened, they rear up and shoot these red horn-like protrusions from their head. If the birds aren't scared off, they get a nice meal.. if it works, he'll get time to morph into a beautiful butterfly.

This is a dry shady border in my back garden. Always a difficult spot to get plants to grow. I am really pleased how these plants are doing. Euphorbia amygdaloides var. robbiae. Long lasting acid yellow flowers appear above evergreen rosettes of dark green foliage. Tough as old boots, it even grows at the base of mature trees. Geranium macrorrhizum, strong pink flowers during the spring and summer. It’s also semi evergreen so is great at suppressing weeds. The bees seem to love them too. Lamium maculatum Beacon Silver at the front of the border with silver leaves edged in green, really brightens up a shady spot. Lovely magenta flowers will appear in late spring. This contrasts well with… Ajuga reptans atropurpurea with dark purple leaves and small spikes of dark blue flowers in the spring, again another plant loved by the bees. FRIDAY FAVOURITE: SNOWDROP But wait, I hear you say! Snowdrops flowered ages ago! Surely there are other flowers that we could pick today, like dandelions, bluebells or even hawthorn? Yes, we could, but today happens to be World Snowdrop Day! The first Snowdrop Day was celebrated in England in 1894. Soon, the celebration of the day of spring and hope became a tradition that took root not only in the United Kingdom, but also in many countries of the world. Today, Snowdrop Day is an international holiday that is annually celebrated on April 19. An odd day to celebrate this flower which is long gone by the time Snowdrop Day comes around, but it is actually a great reminder that now is the time to split and transplant snowdrops. This should be done just after flowering for best result. One of the first flowers to flower after winter, snowdrops are such a welcome source of nectar and pollen for our pollinators. One of the great features of this plant is that the flowers are facing down. This means that in a winter or spring with lots of rain, the pollen and nectar does not get washed away. They are protected by the overhanging petals and remain available to the bees despite the wet conditions. Snowdrops are available in lots of varieties, but if you are planting for bees, select a single flowering variety like the ones found in the wild. This is to ensure that bees can access the pollen inside the flower. On flowers with too many petals, the bees simply cannot access the pollen, and although they look fancy, they are unfortunately useless for our pollinators! Interestingly, the snowdrop is one of these plants that have a huge following. People collect different varieties of snowdrops, and there is even a name for people who have an interest in the plant. They are called galanthophiles! So, lets hear it for the pretty, pollinator friendly Snowdrop and all become galantophiles, if even for just a day!

Cistus 'Bennett's White' is possibly the most beautiful of all Cistus. It is an evergreen shrub with large pure white flowers up to 10cm across and a magnet for bees!! Grows to around 1.5m high and I like to keep it pruned after flowering. Can be difficult to propagate and not easily found. Low, spreading plants with an attractive texture. Varieties that you wouldn't see every day. The larger the groups of one variety are, the more impressive results will be achieved. Not every garden would have space for large groups. Nevertheless, to get an effect in smaller spaces, we recommend planting at least a square metre with one variety, with a minimum of 7 plants per variety. We would recommend three of the featured varieties for small areas anyway: Azorella trifurcata, Mentha requienii and Thymus pulegioides 'Kurt'. The thyme requires well-drained, almost sandy soil. At Caherhurley Nursery we focus on the need for reliable plants that can cope with soil that's saturated with water in winter while growth has practically come to a standstill. We're in the wet West of Ireland, and we grow all our plants ourselves, from the very start of their lives, on a windy slope, outside exposed to the elements. Hard to believe yesterday was my first visit to a garden centre This Year. I just haven't had the urge & let's be honest, the weather hasn't been any incentive. Also hard to believe, I've managed to lose nearly all the pulmonaria from it's regular corner, hence the need for the GC. I ended up with two contrasting colours rather than replacing like for like. Oddly, some of the original has jumped ship from shade to a much sunnier spot in the gravel. For now it's happy. If you are new to foraging, one of the best plants to start with is wild garlic or ramson, a mild garlic flavoured spring vegetable. In Ireland, ramson grows wild in woodland, ditches and in some gardens. Picked early in the season, the tender young leaves are a perfect ingredient in a fresh, low-airmile, seasonal ramson pesto. Later in the reason, you can enjoy the juicy buds and stems and once the plant has finished flowering the unripened seed pods can become ramson capers, deliciously crunchy and bursting with flavour The beauty of Ramsons is that the whole plant is edible. However, the leaves are most tender and flavoursome before the buds and flowers emerge, so try to pick them now and for the next couple of weeks. Coincidentally, the ramson flowers are a big hit with our honeybees, who love all kinds of alliums, cultivated or wild!
