I slightly fell down a Julian of Norwich rabbit hole, after hearing Dr Janina Ramirez speak about her in Oxford last year, and so, when I heard about this fictional retelling of her life, I knew I wanted to read it. The story follows Margery Kempe, a woman who has 14 children and vivid visions of Christ, and Dame Julian, whose suffering and visions lead her to take up the solitary existence of an anchoress. Both women experience trials of different kinds and are accused of heresy, a dangerous thing in the 1400s. The spiritual journey of both women leads them to an encounter in 1413 that will release both of them from their suffering. I think perhaps Julian's beautiful quote, 'All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well', summarises so well the hope that both she and fellow mystic Margery Kempe had, despite the persecution both suffered. It's inspirational in that respect. Did I love it? Well... in all honesty, I didn't love this book perhaps much as I'd hoped to. I liked the structure and the first-person narrative. I thought the women were nicely bought to life, and the story was definitely believable. I just didn't care enough about either of the main characters, and actually, I really didn't like Margery Kempe that much at various points, either. There were some very nice words, though. 📚 Book review! Side note - I’ve been poorly, the doctor says I have whooping cough and that I need to rest. Luckily this news came at the same time as the half term holiday (for non UK followers this is a week’s holiday in UK schools). It is raining and miserable out, so I’m spending the day wisely - with two blankets, a cuddly cat and my TBR pile! Skellig! This is one of those books that every educator has heard of, but unless you teach upper key stage 2, you are less likely to have actually read! The Last Wish - Andrzej Sapkowski Thank you @scrivs_rhys_james for the lend even though you were contemplating a reread. Will add this to the bag of books I’m giving you when I next see you. I found that this book was not well written, laughably so at some parts, but that may be down to the translation as its original language was Polish, rather than the writing. But I did enjoy the read. It’s a collection of short stories following the Witcher Geralt which gives more depth to the character and makes you realise he is more than just a monster killer for hire. It’s an easy read which I definitely needed this week. I will probably read the second one but am interested in other peoples thoughts on the sequel whether they think it’s better than the first or not, so if you’ve read them please comment below. I would like to see and hear more than what I’ve already seen in the series about Geralt, not so fussed by the other characters, and it has made me want to play the games. So maybe I should read the sequel. 🌸 B o o k T h o u g h t s 🌸 A Caribbean Heiress in Paris, by Adriana Herrera This was my very first historical romance book and I thought it was just perfect for a beginner like me. Quick read, filled with some steam, pining, adventure, and a bunch of banter. I also learned a bit about making rum, which was a total hoot! All the boxes were checked and I am happy I can finally say I’ve read a historical romance book. The only thing that got me in my annoying state was the miscommunication between the two MC’s. Arg. Luz Alana and Evan Sinclair did not communicate and it was like pulling teeth for either one of them to talk to the other. This is one trope I have an extremely hard time with. I don’t like thinking .. ‘just talk already’ while reading through an entire book. I get irked and then can’t think about anything else. And then, end up reading words, but nothing is going anywhere and I don’t know what I just read. PLUS. When the main reason for not communicating has everything to do with being worried about the others feelings … OH MY GOSH ! Nooooo. Please, NO! It doesn’t happen often, because I know I don’t like this trope and try so very hard to avoid it. But sometimes a book will sneak in the mix, just like this one did. And then I think, ARG ! If I’d known there was miscommunication between the MC’s I wouldn’t have picked up this book. But then the realization kicks in and I would have missed out on it entirely; which would have been a bummer. It’s a conundrum people. It’s a conundrum. Overall it semi worked for me and this one. I found myself routing for both characters from the very beginning, and the author kind of brushed through these “miscommunication” parts. 🌸 🌸 🌸 How about you?
