„This is how you remember it“ by Catherine Prasifka 🪷🫧 This started off so good, but after 1/3 my enjoyment of the book gradually started to dissipate. While this had such interesting aspects of growing up with the internet, the overwhelming possibilities and impact it can have on us growing up I did find it a bit exaggerated and over the top. For the reason of shock value or to show the extent to how intense the influence of social media can be, I don’t know. But especially the ending is what left me feeling very unsatisfied. So overall, some very strong points that made me sit and reevaluate my relationship to online spaces but on the other hand some parts that left me rolling my eyes or annoyed. -

I only have brilliant things to say about This Is How You Remember It by Catherine Prasifka - a journey through the life of a young woman told through snapshots of her experiences with the internet and technology. This book hasn't been far from my mind since I read it in January and it was such an honour to be asked to speak with Catherine about it at the United Arts Club last night (my first time there and such a lovely, welcoming space). Catherine's thoughtfulness and incisiveness made for a really interesting conversation - she blends humour and pop culture reference with really considered critiques of tech and social media so effortlessly and intelligently - and I could have listened to her all night. I'm jealous of people who will now get to read this book for the first time, and I urge adults of all ages to read this and consider their own relationship with the internet, and that of those in this very particular sub generation who were the first to "grow up online". For me, it's almost unbearably real, from the fondly nostalgic to the horror of recognition, and quite unlike anything I've ever read. You can read my full review in my January 2024 Substack newsletter "Girl Online", which you can read via my bio, and the book is available to buy everywhere now. #thisishowyourememberit #catherineprasifka @prasifcat @canongatebooks #bookstagram #reading #booksbooksbooks #bookreccomendation

Thank you everyone for coming to the launch of #ThisIsHowYouRememberIt 🧡🧡 Definitely, this will be how I remember it (ha ha, first time I’ve heard that joke). You might spend six or so hours with my book. For me, every book represents a two year (or more) project, from idea to those first few words to finished project. This story has lived me with me for much longer, and it isn’t only my own. I’m so happy it’s finally out in the world now. After writing a book you kind of think that you’ve written enough words and don’t really have to prepare much for something like the launch. As I waited for the room to fill up (and fill up it did) I began to get more nervous, not less. What was I going to say? Family members from all over had come out of the woodwork. People came up to tell me they were such big fans of my first book that they were so excited for this one. (Could this be my life?) A book doesn’t exist without its readers. I am so amazed that apparently mine have found theirs. Hodges Figgis sold out… I don’t know what else to say (don’t worry, they’ll have more copies by this afternoon). Thank you, thank ‘you’ (that’s a joke about the book). #catherineprasifka #noneofthisisserious #irishfiction #fiction #sadgirl

REVIEW: NONE OF THIS IS SERIOUS BY CATHERINE PRASIFKA🌃 no quote for this one because i almost dnf’d and skim read the second half because… what? i just didn’t get it! it was trying too hard to be relatable, and got boring very fast. how many times can one read “i checked social media” before it gets too much. very disappointing as i had heard good things and was expecting to love it :(( rating: ⭐️⭐️ / 5

Catherine Prasifka has managed yet again to explore the lives of young people in Ireland as lived in large part through the digital world, a brilliant chronicler of life online yet a one who imbues real heart and emotion in her writing. This Is How You Remember It comes out in May of this year and it will be one of the books everyone is talking about in 2024. The novel captures the early wonder and magic of the internet as experienced through a young child, finding pictures of nice pets and later developing innocent penpal-like relationships with other young people online. This gives way quite quickly to accessing disturbing adult material when she is far too young to understand. This understandably has catastrophic effects on her interpersonal relationships as a teenager through to early adulthood, and the shame and humiliation that she faces at the hands of bullying peers is expedited by their access to devices that can record and broadcast her intimate moments. The use of the second person is really unusual but effective, and I interpreted this as the older character trying to speak to or access a version of herself before her way of seeing the world was so thoroughly warped by her relationship to the internet. It is upsetting at times, but still hopeful, as the use of this older or wiser voice suggests that there is a change or breaking away from this dependency. I think this book will resonate with a lot of people, particularly in the wide millennial (or millennial - older gen z) age bracket, and particularly how the promise of the internet as something that could bring everyone together really became the great isolator, forcing us all into our own individual phone-shaped prisons and not really offering any escape or alternative except for the ones we make ourselves. #thisishowyourememberit #catherineprasifka @canongatebooks #books #reading #readirishwomen #netgalley

Happy Saturday! 🖤 Today, I present my "rot girl winter" book recs! According to Urban Dictionary, rot girl is "where a girl lays in her bed or room for hours on end 'rotting' away with little to no activity." If you add winter to the end of the term, it's the name of a song by Princess XIXI which explores themes of mental health struggles. However, I also like to think of rot girl winter as a way of women reclaiming independence, self-compassion, and relaxation, which they deserve, especially in this economy, along with the existential dread of climate change 🫠 Anyway! Here are some really good books! 🖤 Painting: Nonchaloir (Repose), 1911 by John Singer Sargent Slide 2: ♡ Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason ♡ Luster by Raven Leilani ♡ Temper by Phoebe Walker ♡ Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams ♡ None of this is Serious by Catherine Prasifka Slide 3: ♡ Yolk by Mary H.K. Yesterday was a lot of fun, thanks everyone for coming! I started the day by visiting the Contemporary Female Irish Voices class. I had a great discussion with the students, led by their insightful questions. Honestly, I think about how engaged I was during the first year of my undergrad, and they put me entirely to shame. It’s almost surreal to sit in a class of 20+ people who have all read your book and are asking you academic questions about it. It was also nice to flex my academic literary muscles again! In the evening, I read from #noneofthisisserious and talked about it, in a discussion led by @dilarayilmaz.litcult. Again, I was absolutely shocked (in a good way) at the turn out. In the evening! On a Tuesday! This close to Christmas! There must have been 50 people in the audience. What a way to end the year!! #catherineprasifka #irishstudies #literature #irishliterature

12/20/2023, 11:31:00 AM

Absolutely thrilled to be doing this event!! Looking forward to meeting everyone. Thank you @dilarayilmaz.litcult for organising it 💜 Here is the event description: You are warmly invited to a live reading with Irish author Catherine Prasifka! Catherine will be reading from her debut novel None Of This Is Serious (Canongate 2022), which not only brought her to international attention but also put her on the An Post Irish Book Awards Newcomer of the Year shortlist in 2022. Set in dystopian Dublin under a cracked sky, the novel tells us the story of Sophie, who - utterly disaffected - deflects herself from her real life misery, that is a crippling climate, late capitalism, unemployment and unaffordable housing, with obsessive doom-scrolling on social media. The novel explores the incompatibility of the real world with the online, the vulnerabilities in yourself and your social networks, and the uncertainty and absurdity of being alive today. The reading will take place at the English Department in room 225 (2nd floor) on Tuesday, 19 December 2023, 6.15p.m. You will have the chance to chat with Catherine, ask her questions about her writing, and have her sign your copy of the book. The event will be in English and free of charge. No prior knowledge required. All welcome! #irishwriting #irishstudies #catherineprasifka #noneofthisisserious

Had the amazing experience today of popping into @kinokuniya_singapore to sign copies of #noneofthisisserious today. It’s hard to believe how far my little book has come. Recently I’ve been thinking about how I wrote the book during the pandemic, how every day was the same, and how it was the only thing that kept me from bouncing off the walls. I get asked a lot how I did it, and truthfully I just don’t know. It’s really hard to connect now to then, and even harder to remember before the pandemic. Planes were grounded, I didn’t leave my 2km/5km/10km bubble for months at a time. Everything was at a standstill, and yet moving incredibly quickly. It felt impossible to ever move past anything. And now I’m signing notis in Singapore. Not every day is good, sometimes I’m plagued by imposter syndrome or annoyed by something I read. But every so often, I get one really good day, and it all feels worth it. #catherineprasifka #literature #books #irishliterature

⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🖊️ None of this is serious (Catherine Prasfika) Dublin student life is ending for Sophie and her friends. They’ve got everything figured out, and Sophie feels left behind as they all start to go their separate ways. This book is about the uncertainty and absurdity of being alive today. It’s about balancing the real world with the online, and the vulnerabilities in yourself, your relationships, your body. At its heart, this is a novel about the friendships strong enough to withstand anything. It sounds so promising when reading the synopsis for this book, unfortunately it wasn’t that interesting. It’s at most very relatable, however I didn’t feel very sympathetic for any of the characters. It’s a little too dull for me, maybe trying to mimic how dull life can be although it didn’t quite work. It’s a fast and easy read. Not bad at all, just not as good as you’d hope. One thing I at first thought wouldn’t work at all but totally did was the fact that we never got to read Sophie’s part of the dialogues, it was a nice touch to how she felt and was as a person. Have you read this book? NONE OF THIS IS SERIOUS ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 Back again with another female Irish author!!! This book gets compared to Sally Rooney's novels a lot and I can understand the comparison up to a certain point, especiall with its emphasis on the mess contradictions of life, and its close focus on the minutiae of the dav to day. lot but I'd have to disagree, this book feels like it's trying to do something different that most of the sad girl, dublin, college novels that have been pumped out in recent years. Although the book explores the interior life of its protagonist Sophie and her relationships with the people around her, the real interest in this novel lies in its commentary about the use and abuse of the internet, our habits of doom scrolling. Sophie is addicted to doomscrolling, her self images is almost entirely constructed from the internet and she arranges her thoughts on major contemporary issues like the housing crisis like preachy Facebook essays. The book does a great job as depicting the incorporation of the internal audience into the though process of somebody who has grown up on social media. It's also really interesting how Prasifka makes the deliberate choice to never allow the reader to hear Sophie speak aloud. Her words are all mediated through her thoughts, or through her messages on various different apps, while other characters are afforded the privilege of quotation marks. It's up for grabs why Prasifka makes this choice but for me it felt like a commentary on the construction of identity through an online persona, and a scathing remark on how by engaging in social media the way so many of us do we might just find ourselves voiceless. The book isn't perfect and I do think it could have profited off of being a bit longer and fleshing out Sophie's character and her complexity but it's a really promising debut with a lot of interesting debates at its forefront! . . . #smallbookstagram #noneofthisisserious #catherineprasifka #irish #irishliterature #irishwomensfiction #womensfiction #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #bookreview #sallyrooney #existensialism #booklover #literaryfiction #litfic

None of this is serious (Catherine Prasifka) Pic from before my copy got drowned in my bag during the downpour when leaving boomtown last weekend 💔 Been in a bit of a slump this past week but finally got round to finishing this. The book depicts well how we use social media to obsessively escape reality, and how personal relationships can differ so much in person vs online. It also offers an interesting portrayal of how even in the face of a global disaster our own day to day problems still consume the majority of our energy. I did find it a bit repetitive at times and was a bit confused with the direction the storyline went, but overall was an enjoyable read. 🏷️ #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagramuk #bookreview #noneofthisisserious #catherineprasifka #booksanddrinks #booklover #bookrecommendations #readersofinstagram #booknerd

I wanted to write something exploring the little flashpoint moments of a woman’s life: seemingly insignificant, yet if she was to look back and wonder how her life ended up the way it did, these experiences would immediately seem formative. I was coming to the end of my MA in Glasgow in 2019, and the idea I’d ever be able to finish one novel seemed out of reach. This is the story I keep posting about being in Brussels with @elliott.suzanne. Mainly I find it remarkable because it’s my own little rhyming flashpoint. I’m excited to finally be able to share it with everyone. The idea for the narrative came to me in 2021 when I was talking to my friend Clare. We were talking about growing up and our online experiences. It became clear that a lot of our ‘coming of age’ experiences which shaped how we saw the world happened on the internet. In a weird way, I see this novel as an act of collective recollection. Do you remember it? Was it like this? And for everyone who doesn’t remember it, who didn’t grow up like this, why did you allow us to? I hate the way discourse around social media can sometimes place the blame upon addicted young people, instead of wondering how we ended up living in a world that profits from our addiction and plays upon the quiet intimacies of our lives. Looking back, with hindsight, it’s always been exploitative, and it’s only getting worse. It’s not just about remembering, it’s about understanding how the past shapes the present as well, and how each experience has always primed us for the next. I’m hoping this starter pack will spark some memories for everyone (wanted and unwanted). What specifically online experiences did you have when you were too young? How has the internet shaped your life? How is it still shaping your life? I’m dying to know. #thisishowyourememberit #catherineprasifka #noneofthisisserious #irishliterature #fiction #novel #literature #book

Review #9 - None of This is Serious by Catherine Prasifka I’m a wee bit homesick so here’s another review for you 🫶🏼 This one blew me away, it was such an incredible debut. I spent almost 5 years living in Belfast and so I’ve really come to love Irish lit, from the dry and direct way it’s written to the nostalgic feel of the sarcasm and banter. I choose to pick this up because I felt like I was in a similar transitional stage of life as the mc Sophie, who’s about to finish Uni and unsure what to do next. I enjoyed how much it captured the struggle of the post-grad bubble and how many hours young people spend scrolling on social media, where they feel most connected to their lives as well as LinkedIn, applying for jobs that they (often) never hear back from or don’t have at least 2 years experience for. Based on the the blurb, I didn’t expect it to have a dystopian element, so I was shocked when the purple crack in the sky appeared, however it fit with the social commentary of the book and the world we live in, with the impacts we’re facing from global warming and climate change. Going into it, I had no idea the mc had a twin who lived and went to uni in Scotland, just like me. However, their volatile relationship was shocking. As a twin I understand the competition element they faced, however Hannah was downright nasty and kind of sociopathic?! When she cut the zips out of the boots, my jaw was on the floor. She took sibling rivalry to a whole new level. Other key themes explored are friendship, toxic masculinity and consent. I don’t know how I felt about her best friend, Grace for most of the book, but the way she showed up and supported Sophie in the end was important. I was not expecting it to take that turn, but it fit with the story and the in-depth way it speaks to our time and state of our world. I don’t want to give to much away, but as a woman it makes me so sad that, that’s the way things are. That it is he said, she said, and how men often get away without any repercussions. I would definitely recommend reading this book. It won’t be for everyone but if you do ‘get it’ it will speak volumes to you. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

✨Review✨ I picked this up at the weekend in Birmingham whilst with my bookstafam! It was so good to see them and it was a fab weekend! (Photos to come😅) none of this is serious is written in Sophie’s perspective and it’s written in a way I’ve never seen. The dialogue is written in speech when her friends and family talk, but her own voice is written as if she’s thinking rather then conversing directly. It’s an interesting way and I found it a bit tricky to understand at the start but it grew on me! I related to Sophie’s inner workings of feeling left out, isolating herself and feeling never enough to her peers. It’s written in a way that the reader can understand how life after school can feel like limbo. Not sure what’s coming next, if anything is coming. The crack I felt was Sophie’s emotions morphed into a physical reaction. It begins at the start where she is unsure about her feelings towards a friend, and isn’t getting anything from her job search. It escalates towards the end of the novel when she drops into a depressive state after being assaulted and having no-one in her corner. This is a good novel to understand how adulthood can feel like limbo, unsure of the future and what it holds. As someone who can relate, I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone needing validation or wanting to understand. 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #review #readalongbookfriends #noneofthisisserious #catherineprasifka

I recently finished reading the book "None of This Is Serious," and while I don't believe I was the intended audience for it, I still appreciate the insight it provided. The author deftly navigates the nuances of our digital age, delving into the addictive nature of social media platforms and the effects they have on our mental health and self-perception. By dissecting the algorithms and mechanisms behind these platforms, the book offers a critical perspective on the way they shape our thoughts, behaviors, and relationships. It reminds us to be mindful of our online presence and to seek a healthy balance between virtual interactions and real-life connections. It discusses the anxiety and apprehension that arise from not knowing what lies ahead, whether it be in relationships, career paths, or personal growth. By highlighting personal anecdotes and anecdotes from others, the author reminds us that uncertainty is a shared experience and that we are not alone in facing it. The author emphasizes the importance of nurturing authentic friendships and navigating the complexities of romantic relationships. Overall, "None of This Is Serious" provides an exploration of the housing market, job market, friendship, relationships and social media through the eyes of a young person. I initially intended to keep this post short, but upon reflection, I recognized the importance of delving into the various themes explored in the book. It reminded me of the immense value that books and different perspectives bring to our lives, broadening our understanding of the world and fostering empathy towards one another. . . . . . #bookstagram #books #booklover #bookworm #bookstagrammer #reading #bookish #booknerd #olvass #noneofthisisserious #catherineprasifka #readmore #bookish #bookishpost #bookreview #bookishphoto #bookphotography #lisbon #booklover #wednesdaythoughts

Sophie isn't the person she seems online. Her best friend has outgrown her, the boy she loves hardly knows she exists, she's starting a strange new online friendship and she doesn't feel together at all, not in the way everyone else seems to be. Her life as a student is over and now she has to go out and add new worries about houses and taxes to the ever growing pile. None of This Is Serious is about the uncertainty and absurdity of being alive today. It’s about balancing the real world with the online, and the vulnerabilities in yourself, your relationships, your body. At its heart, this is a novel about the friendships strong enough to withstand anything. This book captures the anxiety you face in your twenties, it allows you to understand how difficult it is trying to live your life online while living in the present. Thank you so much to the author - @prasifcat and @Canongatebooks for running this read-along. NONE IS THIS IS SERIOUS by Catherine Prasifka Published by @canongatebooks Out now I read this one as part of the #canongatereadalong and it was definitely an interesting one! I wouldn't say I loved it, but it had good bits in it :) An annoying narrator, and an odd premise, I felt this one was trying too hard to be something unique, and just ended up being confusing and weird. However, it's got a beautiful cover and I read the whole thing, so it definitely wasn't all bad, just not my cup of tea. Have you read this one? This is a pretty interesting book, I like the writing style as it's different from other books. The characters are interesting with very different personalities. Sophie is a very realistic representation of being in your 20s and the feelings you have when you are struggling with finding work and how it's feels to watch people around you advance in life further than you. It was a pretty good coming of age story that also explores how people react to a strange phenomenon of a crack suddenly appearing in the sky. I wish that the crack was explored a little more, and we got a bit more as it didn't really go anywhere. 4 🌟 #noneofthisisserious #noneofthisisseriousreview #catherineprasifka #bookreview #books #bookstagram

Mě třeba nijak zvlášť, a přesto mě takhle kniha bavila velmi 💜

💬BOOK REVIEW💬 None of This is Serious by Catherine Prasifka ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 Sophie and her friends have just graduated university, and they’re all dealing with their lives moving in different directions at different paces. Sophie feels isolated as she continuously scrolls social media and watches the world move on around her, while she feels stuck. I found the dialogue quite interesting, as it was written as if Sophie’s thoughts were her speaking, and the other characters would then respond, I felt that this gave a bit more insight into her character. I would have liked to have Sophie’s relationship with her twin sister Hannah explored a bit more, as she describes always feeling like she’s in her shadow, but they have quite minimal interactions. All the characters were written in quite a complex way, I felt that I kept going back and forth about whether I liked them or not. Finn was a confusing character from start to finish, Grace was very conflicting at times, and I would have liked to have seen Dan a bit more in the end. This book deals with quite a lot of heavy topics throughout, especially surrounding the obsession with social media from all of the characters, which was an important part of the story and was very interesting to read. This book had a very normal people/conversations with friends vibe, so if you liked them, I definitely suggest picking this one up. Have you read this one? 💭

Book Review... 'None of This is Serious' by Catherine Prasifka This is a coming of age story about a young woman navigating an uncertain time in her life. She's just left uni and her friends are going in different directions, she doesnt know what is next for her and it's a time of instability in the wider world too - enter a seismic, purple crack in the sky. It packs in a lot for such a short book - there are the threads of a love story, family dynamics, friendship, a global crisis, misogyny and Irish politics woven into the narrative and it offers up a sharp assessment of social media and how it can both connect and isolate us from the people around us. Sophie fascinated me and her inner monologue drew me in straight away - she is flawed, vulnerable and anxious, she has a fractious relationship with her sister and parents, she is insecure about her friendships and she spends a lot of time obsessing over her online personality and doomscrolling. She was intense and made a great protagonist. Aside from Sophie what I loved about this book was how relatable and current the story felt from start to finish. It was a cracking read. Ad/ pr copy. A massive thanks to @canongatebooks for having me on the readalong last month. #noneofthisisseriousreadalong #noneofthisisserious #catherineprasifka #bookreview #tbr #debutfiction #bookaddict #bibliophile #instabook #bookaholic #readersofinstagram #bookcommunity

None of This is Serious - Catherine Prasifka . AD - PR Product . Like Sally Rooney or Naoise Dolan with the slightest hint of dystopia? Then you’ll love this! . RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ . 📚 S Y N O P S I S 📚 . Dublin student life is ending for Sophie and her friends. They’ve got everything figured out, and Sophie feels left behind as they all start to go their separate ways. Then, at a party, what was already unstable completely falls apart and Sophie finds herself obsessively scrolling social media, waiting for something (anything) to happen. . This was such an intriguing novel and so relevant in life today (and for me personally) with how tied to our phones and social media we’ve become, whilst dealing with the usual dilemmas that face us in our early 20’s… oh and with a potential world ending event thrown in for good measure. Despite finding Sophie so unlikeable, this is such a great character driven novel and I loved the twist of this background event and how they continue to live their life around it. . Big thanks to @canongatebooks for the copy of None of This is Serious - which is out now! . #LynnesBooks
