Consider this. Most of us will refuse to do something based on a belief, or perhaps the interpretation of a single experience that by no means has indicated a pattern. Now I am not saying with the belief of playing with lions is bad, and therefore one should go play with lions because it is just a belief. What I am suggesting is that many of us have fears based on a single or few instances, and what we are making that mean. I have had many clients hesitant to invest in photos, based on a previous experience. One bad photo. One bad photographer. A belief that it is not possible for them to look good in a photo. Whether you get a photo or not- what else are you holding out on? Based on perhaps an unfounded fear? I held back for YEARS because I was not a perfect photographer. I seem to often unconsciously hold back my movement when hitting the pad. I hit the target spot-on but there’s so much more power and impact I could’ve generated and landed if I could just let my punch go through the target. We’re so ingrained to “meet” the target but like I always say, the target/goal only provides a direction, not a destination. Rolling into a race week & representing 🇬🇧 GB at the European Middle Distance Duathlon Championships in Germany 🇩🇪this weekend😊 This will be the first time I represent GB in Duathlon and all though I am very honoured to put the GB vest on again this race was never a target race. So bored of rain now...but warmed the day up with some hill reps. Had a session in my plan with @humango_ai - but rather than do another turbo session (3 x 20min big gear Tempo intervals) I adapted it and went out and rode Aston Hill. 5 reps up at Tempo, then roll down to go again. If you've not ridden it, it's a great Hill - an almost alpine climb with long sweeing bends. Fear of failure can be absolutely paralyzing. You can be excited about setting goals, put in the hard work, do your due diligence, show up completely prepared to tackle the challenge, and then just, freeze. Or, maybe worse, keep moving, but you approach the challenge defensively, more afraid of losing than you are determined to win. I know this is the case for me. The problem is, playing defense out of fear of losing pretty much guarantees the outcome. You hold your breath, ride tense, lock up, and get in your horse’s way instead of trusting him to do his job. You hold back, and the all of the late nights riding, hauling to practice bringing both of your kids, seeking advice from people whose opinions you respect. And you know what I realized? I’m wasting my time, my families’ time, and the time of my peers who I constantly seek help and advice from. And I’m sick of it. They probably are, too. Even though I have a green horse, and I don’t expect him to run like an open horse, I’m not even giving him the chance. And frankly, this isn’t a new pattern of riding for me. The mental aspect of overcoming any challenge to achieve a goal is for sure the hardest. Admitting you’re the problem is the first step to overcoming it. We run again tomorrow. I already know what result I will get riding defensive and scared. It’s time to ride aggressive and act like I’m there to win. I kept hearing “why does the caged bird sing?” in my head… and realized the last few weeks (and ESPECIALLY the last few days), I have been actively focused on not holding things in—bitterness, hurt feelings, regrets… and I’ve been actively engaged in speaking my truth, but speaking it from a place of diplomacy, rather than anger. For many years, I held too many toxic emotions deep inside, and all too often, they’d reach a boiling point and I’d react to the “last straw” with rage. It was the kind of anger that terrified me as a child from my bi-polar mother. This rage she often had ultimately caused a (little t) trauma that made me bottle up strong emotions and turned me into a people pleaser. This last tumultuous year has taught me so many things. One of those is that I absolutely cannot and should not hold anything in… but when I DO speak up, I must come from a good place. Almost like a teaching place. And each time I do this, my voice gets stronger. This past weekend came the penultimate moment when something REALLY upset me and on Monday, I called up the offender to discuss it. I did so rationally, without fear, and so much more articulately than I ever thought was possible for me. (In years past, I’d simply choke on my words and could not get them out appropriately.) So THIS was a life-changing event for me. In the midst of this beautiful Spring season where flowers are growing and birds are singing, *I* am blooming too. I’m becoming the person I was always MEANT to be… until childhood circumstances took away my voice and with it, my true spirit. It’s a major shift in consciousness, and I’m so so grateful for it.
