Hi, I hope that you have had a good week. The sun is shining here in the UK (at last! 🌞). Today, I want to share my latest additions to my Joe Abercrombie collection. I have recently bought the Age of Madness trilogy, comprising A Little Hatred, The Trouble with Peace, and The Wisdom of Crowds. I understand that this series is set in the same world as The First Law trilogy, although some time later (I don't know much more than that). I love these covers. I read the three grimdark fantasy books of The First Law trilogy last year, and had a great time with them (Logen Ninefingers and Sand dan Glokta were brilliant characters). I wouldn't quite put the series up there with the all-time fantasy greats (although I am aware that lots of people would!), but it was nonetheless highly enjoyable and easy to read (and recommend), and I read the books back-to-back in a short timeframe. However, the series is bloody and brutal, and is not for the faint of heart! I am probably going to read the Age of Madness books in 2025. Have you read the Joe Abercrombie series shown, or any of his other books? Which were your favourite books and characters? And am I doing the right thing to start this trilogy next after First Law, or should I read some of the standalone novels instead? I was playing around writing down the vibes of the different couples in Rage Like the Gods because as I've said they are basically 6 standalone novels all rolled into one. I decided that some of these are honestly too fun not to share. • Robin Hood vibes. The noble thief and lady knight. Power Couple for real. I love my spouse and I’m about to make that everyone else’s problem. Also he’s a bard but only flirts with his wife (Eirik and Sassa) • Swashbuckling couple who can never commit. The flirting is REAL. These idiots got involved in another love triangle. You can’t put off confessing love forever. (Neltruna and Aernolf) • Lovers to Enemies, Insta love turns to slow burn hate. She’s the villain and he’s a hero it could never work, baby… if only they could have figured that out before they got married (Thyre and Vrom) • Voted most likely to end up with each other but thinks the election was rigged. They are literally the only people they trust. He might have a tiny crush on her but he’d never admit it. We are so platonic we could be roommates and unbothered (one of the greatest lies ever told) (Dagmy and Hakon) • Even their teacher ships them. She’s willing to defy her parents for him, but maybe after the school year is over. He becomes the most deadly Magicker of the third age just to keep her accident prone butt safe. She’s a pacifist but have you met her boyfriend? (Meruna and Fell) • She’s slowly going mad and he’s her stability. She represents everything he hates, compels him though. She was born breaking all the rules and honestly it gives him an anxiety attack. You know those series where each book has a different set of characters who all sort of have a common defining element but are otherwise completely separate from each other? In these stories each of these characters get their own storylines and romances and occasionally toward the end of the series they all meet and start working together. Well, that's sort of what Rage Like the Gods is like, only with one main difference... Instead of having each character's storylines divided by separate books, they're all contained in one epic tome and part of a five book series that tells the story of all the characters, even though they all have separate storylines and romances and indeed take place in different areas. I did this for a few reasons. 1. One of the things I have against these series of standalones is that I get too attached to each couple only to have to say goodbye to them at the end of one book. With Rage Like the Gods each character and their stories get to stick around longer so you don't have to say goodbye to your favorite couple early. 2. As the books progress the main characters stories do get progressively more intertwined and it would be quite hard to keep them as separate books then 3. I write epic fantasy so I don't mind creating a massive tome out of five individual stories And so we are able to have: A Robin-Hood esque romp about a bard thief wooing a female knight. And a tale about a hardened assassin trying to figure out how to have both the life she chose for herself and the man she loves. And the story of a magical student studying in the Academy of Magickers and not getting distracted by her rival along the way. And get to read about a pair of mercenaries as they take on jobs seeking glory and fame. AND the story of a pickpocket who gets in over her head when she falls for a thief mastermind. All in one epic book. These character's defining element? They were all chosen to save the world. An Apprentice of Death is a long series so to avoid confusion I divided it into cycles. But what if the cycles are the confusing part? So, I thought I'd take a moment to explain about the cycles. Essentially An Apprentice of Death is all one series that follows the same two main characters (Dirk and Aleria), and it's in chronological order. But there are different focal points, villains, and struggles throughout the series so I decided to divide the series based off this fact. Because while they are all the same series and the same characters there are some things that are tonally different for different plotlines. Dirk and Aleria do a lot of changing throughout this series and they become something different in each cycle. In the first cycle they are antiheroes, lost souls longing for something more. Still the tools of the people who made them into weapons, and each others' enemies. The first cycle shows them breaking free from their abusive pasts with the help of each other. In the second cycle they are mercenaries, allies with the potential to become something more. They are discovering who they really are both individually and together. They're still antiheroes, but ones with a bit more of a hero complex. And in the third cycle they are something else entirely, but I can't get into all that because naturally those are spoilers. The first two books are an origin story of sorts. They lay all the pieces on the board and get all the players to where they need to be... And then in the Undeath Cycle the game begins in earnest. The stakes are high because this time both Dirk and Aleria have something they can lose... each other. The Undeath Cycle introduces a new set of villains (a villain couple), takes all the characters to the next step on their emotional journeys, and includes a lot more romantic developments. Hi, I hope that you are having a good week. 😀 Today, I am featuring the Steven Erikson books that I own but have not yet read. Two of these are Forge of Darkness and Fall of Light from The Kharkanas Trilogy. I understand that this trilogy is set 300,000 (!) years before Gardens of the Moon, and tells the tragic story of the Tiste people. It will be fascinating to read through some of the ancient history of Malazan, and I want to read the first of these in the second half of this year. The third book featured is The Fiends of Nightmaria. This tells a tale about the characters Bauchelain & Korbal Broach, who featured in the masterpiece Memories of Ice. When I bought this book after limited research, I had no idea that (i) it was a novella, and (ii) it was the sixth novella in a series! 😂 I was initially a bit disappointed after opening the package, expecting a 1,000+ page Erikson tome! Book Review: Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson ⭐⭐⭐💫/5 My thoughts: I am so glad to finally be done with this absolute beast of a book. This is definitely not my favorite Sanderson book. It felt too long, slow and to much like a set-up book. It was interesting in the forecasting and set up for things to come but they are all in the future, but the now of this book was a slog. As an independent story, I found it very weak and uninteresting. However, I am expecting the next books to be wonderful with how things are set up in this one and how much ground work has been laid. There were some bright points in this book. Meeting more of the knights radiant and learning more about the orders was fascinating. The ending was bombastic and did make up for some of the earlier slog. Know the signs 🐺 Werewolves are crafty creatures, capable of hiding their beast forms under the guise of ordinary men and women. No matter what form they take werewolf eyes shine silver like the moon itself. This is the easiest defining feature of these shapeshifters. Many werewolves also bear scars from the bite that transformed them although this is not a foolproof method as many packs welcome in new members after an initiation and will turn that new member with a mere nip that does not leave a scar. Werewolves do not commonly mingle with society, instead they settle in the deserted reaches of Ruskhazar in or near the mountains, keeping to a small but close gathering of individuals that they call their pack. While they may appear human, act human, and even have familial units do not be fooled by these creatures. Werewolves are still monsters, and while they claim they can be reasoned with they are very territorial and have been known to attack for the mere crime of crossing an invisible boundary line. For many generations werewolves have been largely ignored by monster hunters due to the fact that it is said their beast state is a gift from Neltruna, the goddess of monsters herself. But in recent years most monster slayers have begun to ignore this. Why should a legend stop them from slaying real monsters? Hi, I hope that you have had a good week. Today, I am featuring a classic fantasy series, the original Shannara trilogy by Terry Brooks (which was published between 1977 and 1985). I read these books in my early teens (actually before reading Lord of the Rings), and they formed a key foundation of my love for epic fantasy (and no doubt for many other people too). I think they will have dated a little since then, and I am not sure how I would find them now, but I loved them as a teenager. The Sword of Shannara was a little controversial at the time because its plot is very similar to LOTR (in a single volume), but I recall that all 3 books were great tales that are definite fantasy classics (and lots of other fantasy books have also borrowed ideas from other series). I am not usually an impulse buyer, but I no longer had my original paperback copies with the beautiful, classic covers. Therefore, when I spotted @thebookstoreonpluto selling these 3 original hardbacks (in almost mint condition), I had to buy them! I love those covers. There was also a Shannara Chronicles TV series that ran for 2 seasons before being cancelled, which was quite good (particularly season 1).
