Ok, I watched this movie because Alice Krige is in it. She will always be the vampire mum in The Little Vampire to me. I’ve watched a couple of folklore/fairytale horror this year and I’d heard Gretel & Hansel get mentioned before on YouTube. Think this is going to be a very mixed movie for a lot of people if I’m honest. Siblings, Gretel and Hansel live in the countryside with their mother. When times are hard and Gretel can’t find work, their mother sends them out to fend for themselves. As they journey through the dark forest without clothes nor supplies, they come upon a house with good-smelling food, and decide to temporarily stay there in care of an old woman. As they recover from fatigue, they uncover odd things which might prevent them from getting out alive. Jan. 30 2020 was the premiere of Gretel & Hansel. The Covid pandemic lockdowns knocked this surreal horror film out of cinemas before it had a chance to find an audience, which is a shame since it’s a highly imaginative and well executed attempt to transform the Brothers Grimm fairy tale into a feature film. Teenager Gretel and her younger brother Hansel are lost in the dark, ominous woods, easy prey for wolves, when they stumble on a tiny cottage in the middle of nowhere. The kindly elderly woman living there welcomes them in for food and shelter. As soon as they enter that “tiny” cottage, they’re suddenly in an entirely alternate universe - and not always a hospitable one. Oz Perkins creates some wonderful visuals in this one, often ominous and scary, while Alice Krige is fantastic as Holda the witch. I really enjoyed Director Osgood Perkins’ dark fantasy that creates a full-length version of the Brothers Grimm’s most disturbing fairy tale, Hansel And Gretel. From the cruel step-mother who hopes her husband’s kids die in the woods (so she can eat more) to the witch who hopes to fatten the kids up just to bake them in an oven, this is the brothers at their most … grim. Anyway, it’s a creative film, filled with surreal, dreamlike (nightmarish?) images as young Hansel and older teen sister Gretel get lost in the dark, scary woods, then find a cottage that may provide them with refuge from the elements — or does it? A big bonus: Alice Krige’s terrific performance as the initially kind peasant Holda, then very frightening witch. Day 174: Gretel & Hansel original motion picture soundtrack by ROB. Purple marble w/ red splatter vinyl. I wrote so much about this and before I could finish it, instagram died on me. I lost everything. Ugh. The main points were that Oz Perkins made my favorite horror movie of the last decade (The Blackcoat’s Daughter), I see everything he does as a result of this, and this movie was very rad. Stranger than I expected, sticking close to the fairy tale but with some surreal, witchy visuals. The music matches that vibe very closely. I still picture specific scenes in the movie when I listen to this. It was one of the last movies I saw in a theater before COVID hit. I’d listen to this soundtrack a lot in the middle months of 2020 and just miss being in a movie theater. All my feelings towards this movie and soundtrack are very tied to that experience. Waxwork does great work on their soundtracks. I’m happy to have this on my shelves. I especially love the design based on the old Little Golden Books.

After the two “It” movies in 2017 and 2019, everyone was excited to see Sophia Lillis in this one. I was excited too! First part of my Oz Perkins director’s spotlight on my blog: The concept of fairy tale horror movies is an untapped well if done right and this one is. So many spectacular images and colors along with the darkness that are like an illustrated fairy tale brought to life. While this movie is slowly paced and takes some time to actually show you anything it does eventually show you a real villain. I'm not a fan of folk horror movies that don't actually have a supernatural villain based in folklore. I think that this movie presents the idea of a witch needing to feed off of kids to get power and how the powers will corrupt. The colors in this movie are best when seen in darkness and I would encourage you to watch this on the biggest screen in the darkest room to immerse yourself in it more. This low key art-house horror film is a refreshing new take on this old tale, and the horror genre in general. This version of the story centers on Gretel's coming of age. A tale of a young woman breaking free from family, only to discover and develop her own power. The sophomore director, Osgood Perkins, really found a stride in this film; a truly artsy and moody approach to creating a horror themed narrative. What I love most about this film is the truly unique visual and audio style. The hypnotic cinematography by Galo Olivares is paired with the droning synths created by composer Robin Coudert, a combination that makes this film a delightfully creepy work of visual art. Un film che forse di positivo ha solo la fotografia. "Gretel e Hansel" è il remake di una delle storie più famose dei Fratelli Grimm, a cui però è stato aggiunto un tocco più "sociale". L'emancipazione della giovane protagonista è il tema principale della storia. La giovane Gretel (@sophialillis ) e il piccolo Hansel (Sam Leaky) sono cacciati di casa dalla madre malata e povera, che non può più provvedere a loro. Da questo momento in poi toccherà alla sorella maggiore occuparsi di se stessa e del secondo genito. I due si addentrato nel bosco, scoprendo oscuri segreti e macabri personaggi. La trama è trattata in maniera classica, senza troppi colpi di scena. Il finale, a mio parere abbastanza deludente, rovina un po' l'atmosfera cupa e calda della pellicola. La fotografia, ispirata molto a quella di "Hereditary" è il punto veramente forte del film. "Gretel and Hansel" is the remake of one of the most famous tales of the Grimm brothers, to wchich, however, a more "social" touch has been added. The emancipation of the young protagonist is the main theme of the story. The young Gretel (Sophia Lillis) and little Hansel (Sam Leaky) are kicked out of the house by their sick and poor mother, who can no longer provide for them. From now on, it will be up to the older sister to take care of herself and the brother. The two delve into the woods, discovering dark secrets and macabre character. The plot is treated in a classic way, without too many twists and turns. The ending, in my opinion quite disappointing, spoils a bit the dark and warm atmosphere of the film. The photography, inspired very much by that one of "Hereditary" is the really strong point of the film. The review continues in the comments.
