Got a โ€œbabyโ€ pineapple to eat and regrow with my kids. Not sure what cultivar this was, but it one was delicious! We twisted off the top, then cut it into wedges, and ate everything but the skin. To regrow the top, we pulled off the bottom rows of leaves to reveal axillary buds (roots will grow from these), we made a clean cut to the bottom to remove the remaining fruit tissue, then we allowed it to air dry a couple days in order to suberize the wound and prevent rotting, then we potted it up in 50/50 perlite-potting soil mix. Hopefully it wonโ€™t get too big! #pineapple #babypineapple #plantpropagation #houseplants #ediblehouseplants #grownfromstorebought #fruit #bromeliad

Easiest way to start ginger: 1. Buy ginger roots from the grocery store (mine here are from an Indian store) 2. Identify the eyes - Cut 1 inch pieces of ginger with atleast one eye 3. Put it in a box with very very little water (if there is a little standing water, make sure the water does not touch any of the ginger roots) 4. Leave the box in a dark place and forget about it! 5. Put these sprouted roots in some soil! Make sure to bury these in soil about 1-2 inches deep. In about 2-4 weeks you will be well on your way to grow some ginger roots! . . . . . #ginger #gingerroot #growingginger #homegrownginger #growingfood #growwhatyoulove #growwhatyoueat #growingfood #homegrownfood #growingfoodathome #smallspacegardening #sproutingginger #readytoplant #funtogrowfood #gardenblog #gardenersofinstagram #urbangarden #grownfromstorebought #easytogrowplants #herbsofinstagram

Save money and grow from store bought. Half of these potatoes - the light ones and even that BIG one are from store bought potatoes that just happened to start growing in the cupboard. The other half are from seed potatoes. While I've found the yield of seed potatoes is usually greater, there's no reason not to stick those growing store potatoes in the ground and let them make 'free' food for you!

Beefsteak and cherry tomatoes are sending out their first flowers! A little later than ideal, but can't complain since they were started later than preferred but will still give me plenty to snack on ๐Ÿคค My pomegranate was looking a little to thick, so I decided to trim it up to allow more airflow and sunlight, and to focus nutrients to fewer branches to hopefully flower and fruit. I also topped it off with a @jobesorganics fruit tree slow feeder spike and some balanced pelleted plant food. This won't burn it, but will provide plenty of essential nutrients to flourish and hopefully produce, or at least put on size and better structure. My main goal is to keep it healthy and strong until I finally have my own house and can out it in the ground! I did save the cuttings to try and start some new clones and using the @elementnutrients Myco+ mix for it. It's a balanced nutrient mix with beneficial bacteria and fungi, that's why I use it a lot! Those starfruit seeds and then seedlings of mine? Yeah they've been growing pretty strong so I decided to pot them up. I took the soil from my pot that houses my Tahitian orange and added some peat moss and mixed other nutrients in, like @azomite. I also removed them from the soil they were in to get better spacing and mixed that soil and the @dr_earth_organics root zone it had into the soil blend. First I watered the mix to make sure it was well hydrated and then planted and watered in. Moved them inside to adjust for the next couple days, then I'll move them outside. My mamey sapote seed is germinating!!!! I got it from @miamifruit and wasn't sure if it would germinate since I'm up in Maryland. So exciting!!!! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ Sadly a baby watermelon seedling was decapitated last night ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ so hopefully some others decide to break through, even though they were old seeds, so I can fill the last spot in my garden bed. Transplanting time! First a baby lemon tree. When I removed it from it's pot you could see nice healthy root growth, not a lot of radial growth though. All the soil ended up falling off so I covered the roots in a dusting of @elementnutrients Myco+ to inoculate the roots with beneficial bacteria and fungi. Then as I was layering in the soil I mixed in healthy doses of @dr_earth_organics root zone fertilizer to give the roots a boost and inoculate the soil column. I topped it off with a layer of @black_gold_soils orchid potting mix because it looks nice and is similar to forest floors and will feed the beneficial fungi and bacteria as the plant grows. Then a ~2 year old pomegranate in a terracotta pot. It really needed it as you could see it was becoming root bound. So while planting it I layered the soil with healthy doses of root zone fertilizer and packed it in to remove air pockets. The top most roots that were exposed were dusted with Myco+ to help them. Then when I got above half way with back filling I put down a healthy dose of Dr Earth's fruit tree fertilizer with @espomaorganic Iron-tone supplement and @azomite rock dust. Then I put the last layer of soil and a small sprinkle of fruit tree fertilizer before topping again with the orchid potting mix. #grownfromseed #grownfromstorebought #homegrown #homegarden #growyourownfood #container #containergardening #anyonecandoit #everyoneshoulddoit #selfreliance #selfsufficient #organic #fruit #dormgardening #lemon #pomegrante #lemonsofinstagram #pomegrantesofinstagram #gardensofinstagram #gardening #indoorgardening #outdoorgardening

Had to leave school due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. I arrived late at night to see a good bit of my collection had died due to neglect or over watering while I was away. Which really, really sucks. But life finds a way and I'm saving what I can. My large pomegranate got a huge trimming due to all the small growth, so we'll see how it turns out now that I have what is basically a fresh start. My smaller poms seem to be doing alright, just needed some minor trimming of scraggly bits. The next 3 consist of some lemon seedlings I had growing over the summer. I lost 1, potentially 2, but thankfully I have plenty to replace them and the ones I have are looking beautiful, just need some TLC & warmer weather. 7 & 8 are of my Tahitian orange, it took a real beating while I was gone and lost most of it's leaves. But I've given it some fertilizer and a boost of beneficial bacteria and fungi and it seems to be rebounding. 9 & 10 are of my 2 remaining avocados that I got growing last spring and summer and separated back in December into their own pots. I lost 1 baby avocado and my older avocado which was about 2.5 years old I think. So I'm slowly getting my collection back up and running, with more updates to come. #homewindow #homegrown #homegardening #containergardening #grownfromstorebought #indoorgardening #dormgardening #anyonecandoit #everyoneshoulddoit #grownfromseed #avocado #pomegranate #lemon #orange #homegarden #indoorjungle

Holy cow! First time growing a pineapple and harvesting it! I've been growing this bad boy for like 2-3 years, it bloomed and started producing this fall/the end of last summer, and finished ripening this week. I wish I was home to have picked it and tried it myself, but some is being set aside for me to try when I get home in a couple days. I was told it wasn't as sweet as it tastes, but I'll see when I get home. I love how golden it is, now when I get home I got to find any suckers I can and also make sure that the top grows roots so I can reproduce this delicious fruit. #pineapples #pineapple #homegrown #grownfromstorebought #containergardening #anyonecandoit #everyoneshoulddoit

The one thing I hate most about leaving for school is that when I come home I have to do a lot of fixing and maintenance on my plants, especially the poms. At the same time I love it cause it's my time to meditate and pray and focus myself without anyone bothering me....but I always feel bad for removing such vigorous and strong growth. I cut all the branches that come out too low, the branches that criss-cross too much, and the small ones that clutter the inside of the tree. A healthy tree will have room for airflow between the branches and for light to hit them all, it prevents mold and bad fungus and other diseases/pests from finding a safe place to live and infect the plant. Poms also do better after heavy pruning. But it was still lots of good growth about a quarter inch thick I had to remove. So I turned a bunch into cuttings and hopefully they will root and grow. Then I'll either plant them in the backyard, in some of the garden beds, or just give them away to friends and family. It feels bad because of the energy and effort the plants put in and because there's usually growth on this branches even after moving inside, but it's better in the long run. Hard to believe I have had this specific pomegranate tree for 3 or 4 years already, definitely one of my more important pieces of my collection. #pomegranate #pomegranates #poms #pomwonderful #wonderfulpom #homegrown #grownfromproduce #grownfromstorebought #grownfromseed #grownindoors #grownoutdoors #indoorgardening #outdoorgrown #container #containergardening #fruit #FruitTree #homewindow #dormwindow #dormgardening #anyonecandoit #everyoneshoulddoit

Look at this little mandarin orange tree! I grew it from seed from some oranges I was snacking on. The kicker? They were "seedless.". But those little snack oranges actually switch between 2 varieties depending on the time of year. 1 is truly seedless (all seeds are either extremely tiny or fail to develop at all) and 1 is mostly seedless, so the rare seed or two will be spotted at random. Then you just need to determine if they are viable or not, and if they are then grow away! Yeah it's probably going to be a few more years until it ever produces fruit, but that's fine. I like the adventure of growing them from seed and seeing if it's a brand new variety due to genetic mixing of seeds. It would be awesome to be the only one with a unique variety as I clone it and slowly grow a collection of it and give some away as gifts. But if you aren't patient to wait from seed you can buy rooted cuttings and grafted plants that fruit much faster. #oranges #orange #mandarinorange #grewfromseed #homegrown #dormgardening #container #containergardening #growyourownfood #grownfromstorebought #anyonecandoit #everyoneshoulddoit

I got an update from home today. First of all, check out that pineapple!!!! I'm so excited to see it growing, and producing a good sized fruit. Next is a moth orchid getting ready to bloom. This orchid I need to repot eventually. Then the next 2 pics are of Christmas cactuses/cacti. The first one is the momma plant my mom was given and the second one was a cutting I took from it when trimming it. The 6th picture is of my black jewel orchid. It's a terrestrial orchid so it lives in the soil. It has the most amazing leaves, depending on how the light hits it, you'll see some different colors from black and maroon/red to dark dark green and a dark scarlet red. When it blooms it has the smallest, delicate white flowers. The last picture is my Hawaiian shiflera tree, or umbrella tree. It's grown so big since I rooted it from a cutting of my dad's plant. #containergardening #container #tropical #pineapple #orchids #mothorchid #orchid #cacti #christmascactus #umbrella #umbrellatree #hawaiian #shiflera #window #windowsill #windowsillgardening #homegrown #homewindow #dormgardening #grewfromseed #growyourownfood #grownfromstorebought #anyonecandoit #everyoneshoulddoit

Got a small update from home today. I was curious about the avocado seeds I left. I knew one sprouted back in August/September when my dad told me. Never told me another one sprouted! Both are about a foot tall. So I'm having my parents trim them down and transplanting them before I come home so they don't get root bound. That brings my avocado total to 3 plants now. And I was curious what plant was in the background, I couldn't tell! It was just a Hawaiian shifflera tree, also know as an umbrella tree. They are probably one of my favorite decorative plants. They love neglect and you need them to be root bound periodically for their best appearances. God knows I can't wait to be home with my plants and see how well they are doing! I need that relaxation that gardening gives you right now. #homegrown #homewindow #windowsillgardening #containergardening #container #growyourownfood #grewfromseed #grownfromstorebought #grownfromseed #avocado #umbrella #tree #trees #FruitTree #decorativeplant

Well I got a random update today from my dad on some of my plants back home. First off one of the avocado seeds I put in soil has sprouted and is now about 6 inches tall. I gave my dad directions on this one to make it bushier from the start. Next comes the orange and the container full of lemon seedlings. The orange is doing great and is really growing strong now. The lemon seedlings seem to be starting off strong. When I get home I'll separate them out and leave the strongest one or two in that container. And lastly is my huge pomegranate! It's growing wild and will need some pruning next spring. But hopefully it will flower and set fruit, I'd love to try a homegrown one! I've been seeing better growth with these air-pruning pots than I have with normal ones, so I think I will slowly be moving all my plants into ones like this as they grow up. Also need to get all my plants staked up with lots of support. Then I plan on giving my big avocado (not pictured) some extra fertilizer because I want to cut it back the height some and make it bushier and stockier. #containergardening #grownfromseed #startedfromseed #startedindoors #dormgardening #grownfromstorebought #growyourownfood #anyonecandoit #everyoneshoulddoit #gardening #container #gardeninglife #home #homegrown

Sooooooo, I got a text today from my dad. He said "I didn't know you had a pineapple growing.". And I was like "you knew I had 3 plants, do you mean there is a fruit there?" Yup my 2 or 3 year old #pineapple #plant is producing a #fruit. This will be the first #homegrown pineapple I have ever grown! I can't wait for it to fully develop and be edible. Hopefully I get a taste, if not I hope my family enjoys it. I'm so excited from this. It grew and began to fruit in zone 7 on the east coast of the USA!! Also, it can take up to 6 months for the fruit to fully develop, so that means I'll get to see it when I'm home in the winter and it should hopefully keep developing until April at the earliest or even better May so I can eat it when I'm home for the summer. #grownfromstorebought #grownfromproduce #container #containergardening #firsttime #oldest #anyonecandoit #everyoneshoulddoit

Decided to move the lemon seeds and avocado seed into soil the other day. And I think I'm going be starting all my citrus seeds in bags of soil now instead of the paper towel method. The ones in the soil and bag were growing so much better and I actually moved a few from the paper towel into the soil bag to help them grow better. I used the popsicle sticks to help space out seedlings and keep track of how they grow, especially for when I'm gone. Fingers crossed these seedlings all survive!! Hopefully this avocado takes root and grows happily in the pot, unlike my previous one this one goes right into the air-pruning pot so no root damage from transplanting! I'm also going to have some strict rules on how to prune this one to develop a more bushy appearance. When it gets to 6-8 inches pinch the top half off, then again when that new branch gets about 8-10 inches, and repeat until it's gotten fairly tall and bushy. I'm actually considering really cutting my other one back to correct it. With both I used mainly my favorite black gold potting mix but I also added some of the Miracle-Gro cactus/citrus/palm soil to help with drainage and feed the seedlings so they don't have too much of a shock in their new homes. And you can't forget the living fertilizer to jumpstart the root cultures, I used one from Espoma because that's what I have on hand, but I also love @dr_earth_organics brand of living fertilizers. #avocado #lemon #lemons #grownfromseed #grownfromstorebought #homegrown #homewindow #homegardening #dormgardening #containergardening #airpruning #anyonecandoit #everyoneshoulddoit

Built some shelves to put plants on to get them out of the way of people walking on the patio...though I'm not happy about the location and the lack of middle supports, I built the way my dad wanted it. Hopefully I can get some supports in the middle before the wood warps and potentially damages my plants. Also all these plants are happy with lots of sunlight, so they won't fry from having sun on them most of the day, this spot gets light almost the whole day, especially midday and evening sun. My baby avocado is beginning to grow and will soon have the tap root shoot out of the seed! I can't wait! My big pomegranate is covered in fruit spurs! I hope to see it covered in flowers next year, and maybe a few small fruit too! That would be amazing. I took a cutting from my Iochroma because the branch was in a spot I didn't like so I removed it for the health and look of the plant. But it was a big branch/stem and I decided to root it....and I think it is rooted as that little white blur my camera refused to focus on looks like a root breaking through the compost pot! #gardening #gardenninglife #garden #shelves #outdoorgardening #outdoors #avocado #pomegranate #iochroma #compost #cutting #cuttings #rooting #grownfromstorebought #grownfromproduce #grewfromseed #growfromseed #growyourownfood #dormgardening #indoorgardening #windowsillgardening #anyonecandoit #everyoneshoulddoit

Just another #random update. Descriptions for each follows, so it's a long caption ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜… Pics 1 and 2 are of pomegranates. I had to seriously prune one back because it was getting rootbound and the top growth was really suffering. Thankfully it had these lower branches to support it. But when I was cutting the stem up and removing the leaves from it to be like a mulch I noticed this orange-red-pink blob with black spots. I looked it up and saw its actually a developing ladybug! So I moved it to my big pomegranate to be safe. Pic 3 is my smaller butterfly bush that was dormant when it arrived. It may be a late bloomer but the cones that are growing make it look like it will be a beautiful show! I can't wait to see it in bloom. Pic 4 is the first beefsteak tomatoes of the season, we started late but they are looking like they will grow great! Pic 5 is cherry tomatoes I grew from seed planted near my house. The picture doesn't do them justice, they are a beautiful deep and healthy green. Pic 6 is also cherry tomatoes I grew from seed (same type) but these are planted downhill from an apple tree I grew from seed and along my fence. I'm letting these grow with no care, allowing them to go wild so they can slowly adapt to the environment and the seeds I collect will be better suited than their parents. Pic 7 is my big avocado I started in the winter. It's really coming back after being transplanted and suffering a loss of roots that I couldn't save. These buds will grow into a new stem and some branches, so maybe I'll get avocados sooner than I thought?? Pic 8 is a new avocado that I have germinating. It is splitting and slowing beginning to grow. This one I'll follow different steps and be more involved until I leave for school again. See if the results are different at all. This one is also from an avocado grown in Peru, not Mexico like my other ones but both are from Hoss avocados. #growyourownfood #grownfromstorebought #grewfromseed #anyonecandoit #everyoneshoulddoit #homegrown #windowsill #indoorgardening #outdoors #outdoorgardening #containergardening

Well I decided to #repot a few more of my #plants today. My third #pineapple got moved from the soda bottle it was calling home into this #airpruning pot that I cut in half from 7.5 gallons to 3.75 gallons. The roots were thick and strong so I'm sure it will adjust fine. But I also mixed the soil with some living fertilizer full of beneficial bacteria and fungi. Then I emptied some dead plants my sister had into a garden bed to compost and feed it. Then I used those pots for some of my baby #aloe vera. This stuff grows like crazy but it's really good to have around. They will probably be established in a week and have pups in a month or two ๐Ÿ˜‚. #dormgardening #homegardening #homegrown #grownfromstorebought #grownfromproduce #redusereuserecycle #AloeVera #container #containergardening #outdoorgardening #anyonecandoit #everyoneshouldoit

Last season I let my oldest pomegranate tree grow willy-nilly to make up for the delayed growth it experienced in a compostable pot that didn't compost. That led to some branches growing across each other and in ways I didn't like for a potted plant. If it was purely ornamental and in the yard it would have looked great when fully leafed out, but I want it to stay in the pot and fruit. So I trimmed it back a lot, and still need to trim some more but I'm not doing it all at once. The trimmed off portions I sized out and dipped in a cutting gel containing a hormone that stimulates root growth. Hopefully those cuttings take root and I'll have a bunch of trees to give out that have a head start on life. #pomegranate #growyourownfood #grownfromcuttings #grownfromseed #grownfromstorebought #dormgardening #outdoorgardening #indoorgardening #windowsillgardening #anyonecandoit #everyoneshouldoit

Back home for the #summer and decided it was last time for me to repot my #avocado tree. I should have done it over the winter but I didn't have pots for it. So while I was away for school I ordered some air-pruning pots to keep the roots under control. The roots were insane and I lost quite a bit during the transplant, so I put some root growth hormone on the roots. I also cut the top off the avocado and put the same root growth hormone on the cutting to try and get it to root. Both are growing in Sun-Gro horticulture Black Gold soil mix. #homegrown #grownfromproduce #grownfromstorebought #anyonecandoit #everyoneshouldoit #dormgardening

Well my winter break is almost over, and there wasn't much to do with my plants. I did however transplant an orange I grew from seed and a starfruit I grew from seed. The orange is looking great, but the starfruit has good days and bad. I'm not sure how to grow them best yet, but I'm learning. I also removed all the dead and dying purple shamrocks and used them as mulch for my avocado. I'm hoping the black jewel orchid hurries up and blooms before I leave for school again. I also took a chance and I am trying to grow a peach pit and some cherry seeds and trying to grow more apple seeds. We will see what comes of those. #dormgardening #windowsillgardening #windowsill #dormwindow #homewindow #homegrown #homegardening #indoors #indoorgardening #growyourownfood #grownfromstorebought #grownfromproduce #orange #starfruit #peach #cherry #orchid

#happynewyear #happynewyear2019 Hope y'all have an amazing 2019 full of fun, love, adventures, gardening, and overall success. I'm home from school for a bit but some of my big plants went dormant now that it is winter. Though the umbrella tree of Hawaiian Shefflera is putting out some new shoots. One-day I'll have a greenhouse or move further south where I can grow these plants outside/year-round. And the beautiful black jewel orchid I got from @logeesplants has been such a grower I've had to re-pot it again. Now the majority is in a white pot, but it grew so much that a few pieces had to come off and I started 2 more small pots of it, either for myself or for presents to people I really like. #dormgardening #indoors #gardening #gardenninglife #indoorgardening #windowsillgardening #windowsill #anyonecandoit #everyoneshouldoit #grownfromstorebought #grownfromproduce #growyourownfood #investinyourself #investinyourland #greenhouse #pomegranate #pineapple #avocado #orange #orchids #AloeVera

First seed grown while in my grad school. It's a carambola, also known as a star fruit. It's growing in paper towels only, no media, in case I want to bring it back with me. Growing it in media would cause more harm than good. Here's an update on the plants back home with the family that were outside over the summer! They'll be getting out back in before the frost though. Image 1, front to back: pomegranates, Hawaiian schefflera, pineapple, orange/citrus, and avocado. Image 2: my oldest pineapple, I should hopefully get fruit next year! Image 3: my oldest pomegranate, my favorite plant, it's doing amazing and I expect some flowers next year! And yes, I baby my plants or as some friends may say, I act like a parent to them. #dormgardening #homegardening #homegrown #grownfromstorebought #grownfromproduce #grownfromseed #anyonecandoit #everyoneshouldoit

Some #updates from back #home while I'm away at #vetschool. The first is my #grapevine which has been growing well! I just need to get a trellis for it as this year was focused solely on it's root growth and adapting to it's new spot in the yard away from the neighbors. It was only a year or two when I moved it. The second is a #hawaiian schefflera I grew from a #cutting. It doesn't fruit but it is a gorgeous ornamental plant, especially in pots as they will grow air roots when they are older. The third catches the top of my avocado and focuses on my #orange tree with one of the #pineapples in the background and a small glimpse of a few baby pomegranates in the top left. The fourth is focused solely on my #avocado tree. The fifth focuses on 2 of my biggest plants. One is a gorgeous #pomegranate grown from seed and the other is a #giant #pineapple that I hope will produce fruit next year! The last is an image that catches #sweetpotato vines growing in the #trashcan and large fall #watermelon vines growing from the back right to the front left. #dormgardening #grownfromproduce #grownfromseed #grownfromstorebought #homegrown #homegardening #anyonecandoit #everyoneshouldoit

Hey guys! So it's been raining and humid and just nasty weather, plus haven't had much to update on my plants. But I got some more #SunGro #BlackGold #BlackGoldSoil with #resilience (their added #silica #silicon). I also added in some #DrEarth #NaturalWonder #FruitTreeFertilizer #FruitTree with #mycorrhizae and #beneficial #bacteria. The plants I planted in these pots today we're an #avocado and an #orange, both were #grownfromseed. This will give them time to grow and allow their roots to spread while I'm away at grad school. I might not have much to post while I'm in grad school, but I'll try to get some of the local flora and might try to grow some from seed. #dormgardening #grownfromproduce #grownfromstorebought #redusereuserecycle #homegrown #homegardening #anyonecandoit #everyoneshouldoit
