The Yellow Creek Falls tumbles 100 feet into a clear blue hole popular in the summer for cooloing off. Today at work I ask an elderly patient, who was contemplating hospice services, “What advice would you give to a younger person on your outlook of life?” The elderly person responded without hesitation, “Do it while you’re young. You’ll have the money and the time when you’re older, but you won’t get your youth back and won’t be able to do the things you always wanted to do”. I only work with the geriatric population and many of them are approaching end of life. I occasionally ask this question with my patients and I love hearing their answers. It gives me perspective on the important matters in life and how to make the best of my present and future self. 🧡My California move (part 4, final) When I first settled in after my move across the country I had one vision in my mind…. Go visit Yosemite National Park. It wasn’t long before I got on the computer and managed to book three camping nights in the Yosemite Valley in the summer. With five months until the trip, I knew I had to physically be prepared for some of the hikes out there. I made it my mission to go hiking almost every week to build up my endurance to be able to tolerate the distance and elevation in Yosemite. With that, came my natural attraction to the beauty of nature itself and wanting to preserve those moments and places in time with capturing photos throughout my hikes. I’ve always been drawn to the outdoors and nature, but didn’t really have great opportunities living on the flat land of Virginia, nor did I surround myself with a community of people who lived for the outdoor lifestyle that I’ve longed for. Once I got to Yosemite and did some amazing hikes (and after several months of many other hikes to prepare for it) I realized that I was yearning for more. I caught the national park bug and can’t stop exploring. I now have a California hiking bucket list that keeps getting longer. I say that I’ll move to another state when I’m finished exploring California and get tired of it. I don’t see this happening any time soon. And so, that’s why I’m here. Living my best life. Had a great week with friends hiking in the Linville Gorge area. We carbo loaded at Root and Vine in Nebo. The pizzas were wonderful (photo at end) and OMG, and the coconut cream pie melted in my mouth. Early start on Saturday had us on the trail at sunrise. We were one of the first 3 vehicles in the parking lot. Pinchin Trail is rated hard and earns it with the steep decent for 2 miles into the gorge, and yes, you will come out the same trail. We experienced a little ran, sleet, and snow flurries on the trail, all with the sun shining. The hike levels out along the river to hike to the daffodil flats. My California move (part 3) ☀️ ☮️ ❤️ Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all sunshine, peace and love. California has its fair share of prickly situations and I’ll share the downsides I’ve learned from living in this state for the last 5 years ⬇️ 1. Yes most people are already aware that California is expensive and it’s true. From housing, gas prices to taxes and most things in between the cost of living is significantly higher than the rest of the country. 2. I was not prepared for the massive presence of homelessness and the effects of this population causing trashed areas, high rates of property damage and theft and am much more aware of the causes of mental illness and drug/alcohol abuse proliferating this demographic. 3. We do a lot of driving to get to these scenic and gorgeous places and some areas are notorious for having clogged highways during certain times/dates which makes travel a hassle. 4. The wildfires. A dangerous and natural phenomenon has been getting more serious and prevalent in all parts of the west coast states. I’ve met many people who were deeply effected by these fires with loss of their homes and livelihoods and it’s very sad to think that it could happen to anyone living out here. 5. Skin cancer risk is higher. With the amount of sunny days here and enthusiasm for the outdoors. I’ve learned that it’s very common for people living here to get skin cancer. Taking care of my skin is something I’m more mindful of now than I ever was before. My California move (Part 2) Driving across the country for 7 days from Virginia to California was a whole adventure on its own. Stopping in New Orleans just to taste chicory coffee and beignets. The never ending drive across Texas. Staying at the Grand Canyon and catch the first glimpse on the cliff edge to only see an entire white out covered in fog and clouds. Driving through Death Valley in the dark and not seeing a darn thing. All while toting two cats and a dog in the car. I made it here and started a new life. So excited to explore every corner of my new home town. Ready to plan adventures in the state and my first order of business was to get a camp site in Yosemite.
