Let's talk about the elephant in the room—our mental health. As we mark Brain Awareness Week, I'm reminded of the importance of acknowledging our struggles and reaching out for support when needed. ��I remember a call I once made to my then HR manager she picked up the call and cheerily said “Hi Peter are you ok?” “No!” I replied and I burst into tears and hung up the phone! 💭 All these thoughts happened me , in those moments. 💭 Today is time to talk day across the UK with @mindcharity @rethinkmentalillness & @timetochangewales . Maybe you have had or have some of these thoughts too. Maybe all of them. Or perhaps none of them. Talking is great but unless you know what's going on in your head, and feel safe enough to be open and vulnerable then it's much easier to lock it away and dismiss the tough stuff. If you're struggling to talk about what's going on for you, try these things first.... ❓The importance of knowing what you're thinking & feeling Be curious about the feelings you're experiencing. You feel how you feel and no one else has the right to tell you otherwise. ❓The importance of ''leaning into it'' Don't fight it. ''Lean in'' to what you're feeling. When you're struggling it can be exhausting at the best of times, never mind fighting it. Things will only get worse. ❓The importance of ''getting it out'' Talking therapy can be so powerful. Scary as you enter the unknown but also one of the best things in the world. Journalling can be equally as helpful, write as you think . it doesn't need to make sense Send a voice note, to yourself or a close pal. Saying something out loud can help start to get it solved. ❓ How can you help a mate? Just sit with a pal if they're struggling. Please don't try to solve everything for them. When most people are struggling all they want is to be heard and helped to feel they're not on their own. The best question you can ask is❓''Do you know what you need right now?'' ❓ 🏠 Where's your clubhouse? Your safe space.Where you can have fun, be you and not feel judged. There's no right or wrong , it's just what feels good to you. I’ve been asked this question in these exact words a few times over the last 2 years. In short, no. If anything, it’s quite the opposite. But what I do want to try and help with is: - People understanding WHY they are taking the piss. - Is it to make themselves laugh, those around them, or the person it’s aimed at? - Is it to make someone feel belittled or pushed out of the group?* - Have they been asked to stop by someone? If so, try to understand why and stop. ✅ In some contexts, making fun of others is a bonding experience and I'm a HUGE advocate of it. ✅ In other’s, it can have a very and negative and potentially long lasting impact. ✅ If all parties aren’t enjoying it, then dial it back a bit, but don’t stop entirely. If you’re spending time in your clubhouse this weekend, or it’s a match day with your club team, just have a little think about it afterwards. *if the answer to this is yes by the way then just get in the bin. 🚣‍♀️ Will it make the boat go faster? 📚 An exceptional book, and a simple question to ask yourself to stay on track. I last read this book 15 years ago. The chapter I always remember and has served me well was ‘’Bullshit Filters’’. People can often talk a lot without saying much at all. Sound familiar? I definitely do this at times. Being present and actively listening is such an important skill for us to practice, but whilst you’re in it, it’s so important to identify ‘’what do I actually need to know’’ from this conversation. ❓ How do you handle doubt in something you’re passionate about? ❓ How do you identify the need to stop, revaluate your process and change what you’re doing? ❓ How do you identify what you need too change?! Wide awake in the middle of the last two nights, catastrophising everything. ❌ No sense of ‘’success’’ ❌ Not helping people ❌ There’s no ‘’gap in the market’’ for this type of support ❌ Do you even know what you’re trying to say? ❌ Do you even know what your trying to achieve? I’m packing in Speakeasy. But I think I’ll give this book one more read first. And certainly need to ask myself this question more often, with more focus on what I actually want to try and achieve and help with. So why am I sharing this post? 1⃣ Incase someone else is feeling the same way. 2⃣ For me. What do you think anger is? What's it's purpose? I would love to hear your thoughts! During session yesterday, we discussed anger and I was given a video to watch (link in the comments). Here I learned of the concept of anger being an excess of emotion. I didn't understand right away. I've always seen anger as being a powerful emotion, and standing all on it's own. It wasn't until it was explained to me that anger is a result of other emotions building up too much. For me, it came from years of feeling unheard, misunderstood, forgotten. All these smaller emotions built up over time and it started to spill over into anger. This has gotten me into trouble a few times. Causing me to lash out at others much more aggressively than I otherwise would have. Always in moments of misunderstanding or when I think I'm not being heard. The rage will explode. Those small emotions have become overwhelming and I have not been able to process them. That's my next step. Learning to deal with the smaller emotions, before they spill over into much more powerful emotions that could cause me to act in a way that is not me. In the video Marsha Linehan shows us a way to calm anger, because when you are deep in it, you can't think of anything else. The method she shows is called Willing Hands. You simply open your hands up and relax them on your knees, palms up, or down by your sides. The concept behind this is that when your hands are in a relaxed posture, your brain believes that you are no longer in need of the anger, and you calm down quickly. I'm looking forward to giving this a try next time I get angry. This way I can stop and think about why I'm angry? What was the cause? What was the underlying small emotion that I need to address? Is there anything I can do to address this outwardly? Like talk to another person, or fix a computer not working for you. Once calm, you have the capacity to think clearly and address the situation in a much healthier way. This is me, makeup free and vulnerable, showing my true self. I think it's important that we open up and start having real proper conversations about how we are feeling. It's OK to ask for help when we are struggling. We have been so conditioned by society to "do it all" that we forget we are just one person, and we can't do it all. Being stressed and busy has been viewed as being a badge of honour. Something that we all just get on with and middle through. There has to be an easier way than just feeling miserable and doing the hard slog. We get to choose how we want to feel, and we get to change our perspective. We can turn a negative into a positive and make the best of a situation. It's like the phrase "One door shuts and a window opens." At the time, we think it's the end of the world, but we are usually being redirected to something better. It’s natural to want others to like and respect us, but worrying too much about thoughts others hold about you could injure your mental health. Have you ever lay in bed at night and recalled that time in junior school when you said like something stupid while reading out aloud to the class? Or you've thought before you spoke and said you thought "Bert" in Mary Poppins was called "UBERT" because of the song "its a jolly holiday with you Bert" 🙈 OK, so maybe you didn’t have that exact experience, but you know what we mean. Chances are your classmates have zero recollection of that moment, and you've just reminded everyone about "UBERT" 🙈🤣 And yet, we still spend untold energy worrying about how other people perceive us.
