THE KAMOGAWA FOOD DETECTIVES From Ruth: The Kamogawa Food Detectives by Hisashi Kashiwai is a delightful quick read for lovers of the food mystery genre and Japanese cuisine. The father/daughter detectives in this book don’t solve murders but rather attempt to create long-lost recipes and food memories for their clients. With its focus on food memories and the ability of food to engender connections, it is reminiscent of Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories, three seasons of which are currently available on Netflix. #bookstagram #midnightdinertokyostories #hisashikashiwai #kamogawafooddetectives #netflix #panmcmillanbooks #japanesefood #japanesemysterynovel

Why was Tatsuya pulled back to his ancestral village due to this familymembers, which he didn't even know of as his mother was reluctant to talk to him about it? Being an outsider in his village is itself hard enough for him, but when d*ath follows him to wherever he goes, the villagers start to hate him even more, so much as yo k*ll him. Is this all a setup by someone to make Tatsuya seem as the culprit? Or is Tatsuya hiding a bigger secret?? ✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️ I enjoyed reading this book! 📚 WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN READING? 📚 I'm not a terribly fast reader so, unless the stories are pretty short, I'll only get through a few books in a month. Sometimes I feel ashamed of this because I hear the voice that says, "Well, if you were a real reader, you'd get through a lot more." But I'm learning to ignore that voice, to accept and take pleasure in the stories I do read. So to anyone else who feels like they've been left on the dust reading-wise, you're in good company. Read what you will at what speed you will. So long as you enjoy the story, who cares how many you get through. I'm hoping to share what I've read each month so here's a bit of a backlog of what I read in January and February 2024 as well as my favorite reads from 2023. What have been some of your favorite reads of the year thus far? #readingjourney #readersofinstagram #whatareyoureading #whativeread #whativereadrecently #whativereadthismonth #februaryreads #januaryreads #2024reads #2023reads #cjredwine #cjredwinebooks #ravenspire #ravenspireseries #johnbellairs #housewithaclockinitswalls #alexjennings #balladofperilousgraves #veschwabbooks #gallant #catwhosavedbooks #lonelycastleinthemirror #memorypolice #japanesemysterynovel #japanesemystery #keigohigashino #seishiyokomizo #yukitoayatsuji

This detective mystery thriller starts with Tetsuya Ishigami and Yasuko Hanaoka going on with their daily routines. Yasuko Hanaoka is a divorced single mother who works at a bento shop and Ishigami is a highly talented mathematics teacher, who lives next door to Yasuko and her daughter Misato. One day, out of the blue, Togashi, Yasuko's abusive ex-husband, shows up to extort money and get back together.  After some argument, Togashi leaves and follows her back to her apartment. He forces his way in, again offering to "get back together" (his way of exploiting her). Soon he begins threatening Yasuko and Misato, and the situation quickly escalates into violence, Togashi gets killed by the mother and daughter. Overhearing the commotion, Ishigami knocks on their door, and to their surprise, offers his help in disposing of the body and plotting the cover-up of the murder. This book is a perfect thrill ride, the readers will get hooked just within a few pages. The title of this book is aptly given as it tells exactly what the book is about. This detective novel is not a whodunit story, in this, we are rooting for the killers and always trying to figure out what exactly did Ishigami do and what's his next move, and whether are they going to get caught. And the answers are already given to the readers from the beginning. The ending twist was amazing. I didn't even think that that could have been a possibility. Speaking of the ending, (a minor, vague spoiler) I have mixed feelings about the ending, not the twist but the way things concluded, the ending is good morally but it didn't feel right; it felt unfaithful to the devotee of the suspect X. It's a great read for everyone, especially anime watchers as it is based in Japan and this book has a bit of Death Note - genius vs genius vibe but apart from that anyone can enjoy this great book; the language is really simple and good. I loved it. My rating: 4.8/5 . . . . . . . . #thereadingvampire 🧛🏻‍♂️ #bookstagrammer #books #book #bookstagram #booksbooksbooks #booklover #bookaddict #bookinstagram #bookreview #bookrecommendation #bookreader #thriller #japanesebook #japanesemysterynovel

My #bookreview of the compelling Japanese crime classic POINT ZERO is now available on my #bookblog noveldelights.com Written by Seicho Matsumoto, known as the master of Japanese mystery writing, #pointzero really fascinated me. Originally published in 1959, it is a tense and compelling social critique as it explores the taboo of young Japanese girls having to become prostitutes to serve the American GIs when the US occupied Japan in the years following WW2. Translated by Louise Heal Kawai, for the first time since its initial publication 65 years ago, Point Zero is now available in English.

Blurb: (from Goodreads) One of Japan's greatest classic murder mysteries, introducing their best loved detective, translated into English for the first time. In the winter of 1937, the village of Okamura is abuzz with excitement over the forthcoming wedding of a son of the grand Ichiyanagi family. But amid the gossip over the approaching festivities, there is also a worrying rumour - it seems a sinister masked man has been asking questions around the village. Then, on the night of the wedding, the Ichiyanagi household are woken by a terrible scream, followed by the sound of eerie music. Death has come to Okamura, leaving no trace but a bloody samurai sword, thrust into the pristine snow outside the house. Soon, amateur detective Kosuke Kindaichi is on the scene to investigate what will become a legendary murder case, but can this scruffy sleuth solve a seemingly impossible crime? #japanesemysterynovel #thehonjinmurders #lockedroommystery

SEISHI YOKOMIZO & THE HONJIN MURDERS At the beginning of the year, I decided to read classics of another culture since I am already familiar with many English/American classics and wanted to try something different. Since I am half Japanese, I decided to start with Japanese novels. The first one I read was "The Honjin Murders" by Seishi Yokomizo, the first of his novels to feature the private detective Kosuke Kindaichi. I was immediately hooked and got all the other available titles on Audible. What I found particularly interesting was the blending of knowledge of Western detective mysteries with Japanese culture. Perhaps it shouldn't have surprised me as much as it did, but I was intrigued by the fact that another culture enjoyed books and authors that I knew as well. Considering the fact that I thoroughly enjoy mystery stories, these were a perfect introduction for me. Also, since only the first four Kindaichi novels were available in English (on Audible, my primary reading resource these days), it has definitely renewed my desire to learn Japanese not only as a point of ethnic pride but also so I can read more of Yokomizo 's works. If you enjoy any classic mysteries like those of Agatha Christie, then I highly recommend those by Seishi Yokomizo. You'll be in for a treat. #readingjourney #newyearsresolution #japaneseclassics #japanesemysterynovel #japanesemystery #mysterynovel #mysterynovels #mysterystories #seishiyokomizo #yokomizoseishi #kosukekindaichi #kindaichikosuke #thehonjinmurders #deathongokumonisland #thevillageofeightgraves #theinugamicurse #aapi #aapiheritagemonth

2022 Book 127 This was my first time reading a Detective Kindaichi book and only my second classic Japanese mystery. It is an unexpectedly confounding locked room mystery and every time I thought I had figured it out I was wrong! The ending makes sense without being contrived or forced but is only reached after a tightly plotted book. This book has a clear sense of time and place with culture beautifully on display without being forced, even serving as a character and plot driver. Recommended! I will definitely be seeking more out in this series. #thriller #mysterybooks #mystery #readcrimefiction #crimebookjunkie #suspensebooks #lockedroommystery #bookreview #bookrecommendations #murdermystery #murdermysteryclassics #bookstagram #books #booklover #booklife #bookdragon #bookgeek #readmorebooks #reading #girlswhoread #readinglife #bookcommunity #readersofinstagram #poweredbycoffeeandbooks #2022booksread #booksintranslation #japanesemystery #japanesemysterynovel

“Four will die in the next two days,” says the psychic, whose precognition rarely goes wrong. And by rarely goes wrong, I mean it is eerily accurate to the point that you need to get the hell out of there. But our protagonists didn't run fast enough. And then people start dying. But are the deaths the precognition coming true or are they all a hoax? Are they fate's design or man-made? And most haunting of all, who will be next? Mame no Kushige no Satsujin is the sequel to Shijinso no Satsujin by Masahiro Imamura. It’s another great closed-cycle mystery with supernatural elements; this time, it's psychic powers and precognition. I almost got the culprit right! I can’t believe that I doubted myself! Never again. I highly recommend this to murder mystery fans who also enjoys supernatural elements in the story. #recentread THE HONJIN MURDERS By Seishi Yokomizu ©️1946, 1973 Translated by Louise Heal Kawai ©️2019 . I loved this novel. This is a locked-room mystery where a bride and bridegroom are found brutally murdered on their wedding night. Only the famous detective Kindaichi can solve this seemingly unsolvable case. There are plenty of twists, turns and red herrings that I was kept guessing until the end. . This is the first in a series of novels starring the famous detective. I had read the Inugami Curse a few months ago, and really enjoyed that as well. Mostly because it reminded me of several manga in my collection. I was expecting to find a similar connection when I read this one... but I didn't find it in manga. Kindaichi is described, in this first novel, as an Anthony Gillingham. Anthony Gillingham is the "detective" in A. A. Milne's Red House Mystery which I had just read about three months earlier. Coincidentally, the last mystery novel I read. There were plenty of other references too, but this one was my favourite. . . 🏷 #bookreview #TheHonjinMurders #SeishiYokomizu #PushkinVertigo #mysterynovel #japanesemysterynovel #classicfiction #fiction #novels #bookstragram #booksofig #japanesefiction #bookflatlay #booklovers #bookaddict #bookstagrammers #books #AAMilne #TheRedHouseMystery

Salvation of a Saint by Keigo Higashino. This is the second book in the detective Galileo series These books have an interesting format - by the end of the first chapter, you know who the murderer is. The rest of the book is about an intense cat and mouse game between detective Galileo and the murderer as he tries to figure out how and why the crime was committed. The other interesting part is that you always feel sorry for the murderer and not the victim. It was a great read, loved the book! I read this for the @popsugarreading challenge - a book set in a country you’d like to visit! What is it about reading mysteries that makes you wanna keep going? Is it the thrill or the suspense or the idea of a crime that is unbelievably interesting……. ⛩️ As someone who has never been really into the thriller/mystery genre, it was actually surprising that recently the books I feel attracted to are all in that genre. In 2021, I already finished two mystery novels. Those being Japanese mystery novels set long back also adds charm I think. ⛩️ For Tattoo murder case by Akimitsu Takagi, I was intrigued by the title first. The novel set in post world war Japan where everything seems new & unique. The story revolves around the murders in which Tattoos plays a very important role as u can understand from the title. Actually the novel feels for a large part, like a set piece on the tattoo culture in post world war Japan. ⛩️ The novel takes you deep into this Tattoo world filled with myths, superstitions, all body tattoos, obsession with ink, Tattoo competitions & more. Long descriptions of the process of tattooing, after effects, addictions & how these people are viewed in society all are well incorporated.Even a weirdo professor who collects tattoos….Yes it is more weird than one can imagine.  ⛩️ Once you can get over this tattoo bombardment, the story will have an effect. For me it took quite a long time to get me into the story. Initially it was all the world of tattoos which did wear me out. ⛩️ This is a classic lockroom whodunnit mystery which gets intriguing towards the end. Slowly the ideas come true, jigsaw puzzle pieces get added making the whole picture clearer & more complex as we go. ⛩️ The nostalgia of a bygone era & a complex portrayal of people who choose tattoos & the intricacies of its addiction makes this an interesting read for sure…  #tattoomurdercase #japanesemysterynovel #Jan2021 #januaryinjapan

I literally haven't read anything for about 3 months. I'm not in a slump, I'm just not reading right now in favour of language study. But decided I wanted to take a little break, and since #deweys24hourreadathon is today, thought I'd join in. . . I finally read the classic Japanese murder mystery novel #TheInugamiCurse by #SeishiYokomizu. This is from a series of novels starring the famous detective Kosuke Kindaichi and inspired the long-running manga series #TheKindaichiCaseFiles. What I didn't expect was to discover the connection to another manga in my collection #YokiKotoKiku by #KogeDonbo. The story in the manga is obviously derived from this story, albeit is MUCH cuter. I especially appreciated the insight as to the importance of the words Yoki Koto Kiku as both significant family emblems as well as forming the family motto which was lost on me when I was reading the manga originally. I find that I am constantly being reminded of how much context I miss by reading the literature of another country having not grown up in it... when I come across these little insights gained from reading more broadly. It's like finding pieces to a much bigger mystery... and I love that! . . Incidentally I did really enjoy the novel, however had figured out the entire plot/solution to the mystery when I was 1/3 of the way. I was hoping for a little surprise... alas. I did find the incident that connects to the book cover image to be quite amusing. . . #PushkinVertigo #bookreview #mangahoarder #mangaholic #whatimreading #booktuber #mangatube #mangastagram #japanesenovels #japaneseliterature #mysterynovel #japanesemysterynovel #classicfiction #japaneseclassics #readmanga #readmoremanga #readmore #novels #bookstragram #mangastagram

Fan of complex crime mystery and like to play the part of detective? Then this one will be the perfect pick for you. . Japan 1936. Painter Heikichi Umezawa ,living with seven women, left a testament about his complicated plan to create the perfect woman - his Azoth, made up of severed parts of his six daughters and nieces. These women, with different astrological signs, are found dismembered and buried across rural Japan. But it was impossible for Umezawa to be the killer, because he had been dead himself before the killings took place - LOCKED in his studio room!!1979-still the case remains unsolved. Kazumi Ishioka and Kiyoshi Mitarai sets off to unravel the case. . Love the complexity and the manner in which clues are laid down allowing readers to be actively involved in solving the case.
