đŸ€ž Mental Health Awareness Week đŸš¶ ▫This year the theme for this week is “Movement: Moving More for Your Mental Health.” This week as we center conversations around moving for our mental health, let this be a reminder that mental health is health. Just as we go to a Dr for annual physicals for our physical health, we should be doing the same for mental health. Since much of my work centers around movement, mindfulness, disability and mental health advocacy, I will share some fun facts about movement and its impact on mental health here and in classes this week. Oh, the kind of world we practitioners could foster - internally and externally - if we practiced a decolonized understanding of Patañjali’s Yoga SĆ«tra. ÄȘșvara is not a creator god of the west, as many interpretations of the Yoga SĆ«tra would have us believe. ÄȘsvara is lordliness, as in sovereignty or autonomy. Similarly, Yoga is not a religion or spirituality, though one might practice religion or spirituality alongside their Yoga. The moment we decide to practice ÄȘșvara praƆhidāna (devotion to autonomy - the heart of the practice) is the moment we are autonomous. This means we are not binding the options available to us by looking through the lens of our past, our attitudes, or our beliefs. We are instead allowing ourselves to observe the full spectrum of possibilities so that we might responsibly discern them. Those that are ethical (dharma) shake to the top and we continue our devotion with self-governance (svādhyāya) and doing differently from our past (tapas) in alignment with what is responsible. We are honest in doing what is responsible (ƛauca) and we are content in acting responsibly (santoșa). This devotion can create byproducts: More kindness. More inclusivity. More empowerment. More wellbeing. More freedom. For all, not just ourselves. . . . A colonized understanding of The Yoga Sutra will lead one to believe the philosophy has little to do with how one behaves in a public world. It will seem as though the practice only involves the inner landscape, which can encourage a narrow perspective that doesn’t consider other points of view. A decolonized understanding expands the practitioner’s perspective, where caring for ourselves and caring for others isn’t contradictory, but compatible. Dharma (ethics, morality) is what the many philosophies of South Asia are discussing. This debate is about the right or the good. The Yoga Sutra’s philosophy is no different. It’s an ideal dharma theory. Having a perspective is not the same as being independent. The attitude of a perspective binds our ability to see the options beyond that perspective and, consequently, to choose well. Yoga is a philosophy which motivates us to see the options (beyond our attitudes/perspectives) so that we might responsibly discern them. This is YS 1.2 in practice: “Yoga is the control of the (moral) character of thought.” Yoga encourages us to respect our own and others’ autonomy (ÄȘșvara) by practicing devotion to the ideal of autonomy (ÄȘșvara praƆidhāna). Autonomy is what we all have in common. We practice devotion to the ideal of autonomy by differentiating between attitudes/perceptions and thinking. Self-study, self-determination, and self-governance (svādhyāya), as well as unconservativism in relationship to past action (tapas) accommodate this practice. Ideally, we’re not allowing our beliefs to glaze over our eyes, plug up our ears, still our hands, or callous our hearts to the wellbeing of others or ourselves. These tendencies of belief are the byproduct of Yoga Sutra 1.4, when one collapses their sense of self onto belief, creating a false sense of self. With this collapse comes a loss of freedom (our own and others’). This is anti-Yoga. Ideally, we’re taking responsibility for our thinking - respecting ourselves as individuals, separate from what we can contemplate. Ideally, we’re respecting others as individuals, as well. With this space we can order our explanations and see the full spectrum of options so that we might choose to act in the way of mutual thriving. This is Yoga Sutra 1.2-3 in practice. When we practice differentiating between belief and thought we understand ourselves not by our attitudes about thoughts, but by how responsible we are in relationship to them. Our ability to act responsibly supports our own and others’ freedom, because we create space to discern and choose. The byproduct of this practice is wellbeing for all. No one person is the center of the universe. Nor is any one community. As a matter of fact, there is no center to this diverse universe. Rather, we all belong to the universe and the universe belongs to all of us. With this belonging comes a certain responsibility. Preservation of individual diversity in this interconnected and vast community is a benefit to us all. It’s imperative that we protect a social environment where it is safe for individuals to both actively think (as opposed to passively believe) and disagree. Otherwise, we are supporting something that is detrimental to future wellbeing. This means we must have space to self-govern (svādhyāya) and to do differently (tapas) in order to devote ourselves to autonomy (ÄȘƛvara pranidhāna). 🐣 Soulfull Sunday 🐣 ▫Happy Easter to all those who celebrate today. I have such fond memories of the many traditions my family had growing up around Easter, and I love sharing them with my kiddos! One of my favorite places growing up was Bushkill Falls, and I remember many early Spring hikes there. My heart always filled with joy in the new life, flowers and growth all around us. We have been lucky enough to travel the last few years during the kids Spring Break to take in all the beauty that abounds around us. This year we are taking in the immensity of canyons, caves, hot springs and lakes in Nevada. It’s not defeat to acknowledge other’s accomplishments, admit a mistake, make an apology, or leave a power struggle. It’s responsible action. Getting bent out of shape about winning/losing confuses our ability to see the options and to choose well. Our tendency toward competition can undermine our ability to not only have healthy relationships with others, but also with ourselves, as this mentality can create feelings of inferiority and/or superiority. If we consider this tendency from an ethical standpoint, from how we ought to be in relationship with others and self, this can be problematic. The push to “win at all costs” will take precedence over responsible behavior. Not only can this mentality be exhausting, but it can undermine our ability to find real connection with others as they will seem to be some sort of enemy. This mentally also stokes the fear of “not enough,” but our worth ought not to be based on wins or losses. Nor should anyone else’s. How well - or poorly - someone else does is not a reflection of who *we* are as individuals. If we can responsibly space ourselves from the mindset that encourages us to compete in unhealthy ways we won’t feel the need to be victorious over others. We won’t stoke the fear that we are “lesser than.” We will be able to not only celebrate other’s successes, but to also actively contribute to their wins. We can then see others not as foes, but as friends. Our worldview can shift to see a less daunting place. Doubts can alleviate. Collaborations can occur. We can feel more safe and secure. There is power for all in responsible action. Challenging ourselves to be responsible in relationship to competition - and others - can encourage us to progress past inferiority/superiority. The normal tendency is for self-conception (“I’ve always had to
”) and identity (“
 made me who I am.”) to not only create our self-understanding, but to also passively inform how we act. Because this self-understanding is constructed by and hinges on the past and/or belief, it seems like an immovable worldview. Alternatively, Patañjali’s Yoga SĆ«tra 1.2 posits the practice of Yoga is about taking responsibility for the things that inform one’s worldview. The practice isn’t focused on what experiences created this self-understanding, nor is the Yoga practitioner interested in *why* they act as they do. The focus, rather, is on harnessing this limited self-understanding in order to reclaim one’s autonomy. The Yoga practitioner, instead, is interested in *how they ought to* act as responsible individuals. This shift from the “why” to the “how” is strong medicine. Yoga allows the practitioner to subvert limited self-understanding and its consequent action. No longer does the practitioner have to engage with information while making the explanation about themselves or their emotion(s)/attitude(s). đŸŒ± March into Spring đŸŒ± ▫We spent last week in classes focusing on the power of transformation, during this month of March. From snow to rain to deep fog to sunshine, March is filled with changing conditions. While there’s lots of changes happening externally (including daylight savings and the Spring Equinox yesterday), those external changes impact our internal experience. ✹fire Ă„r✹ tenk at det har gĂ„tt fire Ă„r siden verden stengte og livene til [anekdotisk bevis only] absolutt alle mennesker i denne verden endra seg. det var egentlig mye som var fint den aller fĂžrste perioden der. vi gikk tur, prĂžvde Ă„ finne ut av hjemmekontor, zoom vs. teams, bakte bananbrĂžd, lagde quarantinis, jeg hadde verdens lengste og fineste pĂ„skeferie hjemme i Ă„lesund, gjorde yoga med folk [og dyr] pĂ„ nett, lo mye, ble skikkelig god pĂ„ webinar og digitale Ă„pninger av byggeplasser, albuhilsen, «alt blir bra» og regnbuer i alle vinduer. det var rart, men fint. ogsĂ„ var det tĂžft. jeg jobba konstant med krisekommunikasjon i over to Ă„r og fĂžlte til slutt at jeg hadde seng pĂ„ kontoret. jeg fikk en glorie med grĂ„e hĂ„r som er umulig Ă„ farge bort, sĂ„ nĂ„ bare behandler jeg det som erfarings-glitter. jeg mistet en tredjedel av sprĂ„ket mitt nĂ„r berĂžring av andre forsvant pĂ„ dagen. fra en stappfull yogasal hvor alle praktiserte nĂŠrt hverandre, til en sal med to meter avstand mellom hver matte, jeg kunne ikke lengre vandre og veve mellom mattene. men sĂ„ oppdaga jeg jo bymarka denne perioden. jeg feira 17.mai pĂ„ sĂ„ fine vis. jeg kom enda nĂŠrmere familien min og jeg fant, pĂ„ ekte, familie i vennskap. jeg gjorde noen vennskaps-exits og noen vennskaps-exita meg. ogsĂ„ tĂžft, men helt riktig. litt ut’pĂ„ der ble jeg til og med modig, tok noen tĂžffe og sĂ„re valg, trĂ„kka mye alene i marka, trĂ„kka enda litt til i selskap, sov ute, bada i vatn og trondheimsfjorden, gikk i terapi, grĂ„t og lo om hverandre, ble tatt vare pĂ„ og fikk ta vare pĂ„. fĂžlte meg skikkelig elska. yogapraksisen min har endra seg radikalt. for det bedre. snillere, rausere, roligere, morsommere, mer ettertenksomt. nĂ„r jeg setter det globale perspektivet til side, og kun skuer innover; jeg er takknemlig for disse Ă„rene. tĂžffe, men fine. fra kull til diamant. fra rot og uro

Warrior 2/Virabhadrasana 2 is a quintessential yoga pose in most yoga asana practices. It is one of the standing poses (although can also be done in a chair), and one that both beginners and experienced practitioners can practice. What can you learn from practicing Warrior 2? Lo, so much. When I started practicing yoga, almost 30 years ago now, I started with Iyengar Yoga, where you hold the poses for-fricken-ever. Warrior 2 wasn’t a momentary pose, we held it for what seemed like eons. My legs would shake, my shoulders would cry, and I would think, “when are we going to do something else?!” But it got easier over time, both with practice and with understanding what this pose, and yoga in general, was all about. I also deepened my understanding of alignment and body placement and where to focus my attention. What I learned on the mat eventually translated to my life experiences off the mat. I now move through the world with strength and ease, confidence and humility, serious focus and playful humor. It’s all about balance.
