🇯🇵 One from my pre-Japan-trip reading list - Before the coffee gets cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi @kawaguchi.coffee ☕️ I picked this novel up on a whim several weeks ago when I saw the strapline ‘The Japanese Bestseller’. I had heard nothing about it...but since that moment, I have seen this book EVERYWHERE and come across plenty of references to both the book and the author! The author, btw is going to be appearing at this year’s @melbwritersfest 😃 Structured as four self-contained short stories, the links slowly unfurl. The stories are all set in a cosy Tokyo café called Funiculi Funicula, which is famous for having one seat which can send customers back in time. There are however, RULES. (Of course there are.) And the most important of the strict rules is that the customer must return to the present before their coffee gets cold...which provides the ticking clock for the characters, and their hopes, heartache and regrets. It was the quiet details of the characters interactions that got me in the feels, reminding me of another fave - The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. Instead of experiencing alternate realities however, these characters can only revisit past events, and cannot change the present. Kawaguchi’s writing is tender but powerful, and reminds us of the importance of seizing each day before it goes cold - like the coffee. ❓There are now four books in the ‘Before the coffee’ series, with a fifth being published this year.
