Let's talk about DEATH🪦🔪. James Scott Bell believes 3 types of death must be at stake for your character throughout the course of the story. Here they are: 💪Physical 🥇Professional 🧠Psychological One of them MUST be on the line or your story will not have enough stakes and your character will not have a strong enough motive to keep fighting. Maeve Binchy (1929 – 2012) was a much-loved Irish novelist, who was also a playwright, short story writer, columnist, and speaker. A brilliant, observant and compassionate storyteller, her novels were addictively readable, rich in characters, and often told from multiple viewpoints. Her portrayals of life and relationships were sympathetic, funny, wry, and full of surprising plot twists and believable coincidences that always turned out to seem inevitable. Often, too, the mean-spirited characters got their comeuppances, too. We are delighted to have her wry, funny take — the fourth in our series. It is true that most writers, Irish and otherwise, do draw on unhappy childhoods as part of their source material. Binchy refutes this, charmingly. For it’s also true that “Nothing is wasted on the writer,” as Crescent’s father, Maurice Zolotow, used to say. And joyful experiences, like miserable ones, must not be wasted; by human beings and esepcially those humans who are or aspire to be writers. Clearly, Binchy was in no way stopped, in her storytelling, by her happy beginnings. Even as she observed human foibles, she had an eye towards wonder. #maevebinchy #irish #irishamericanheritagemonth #irishwriters #irishliterature #stpatricksday #quotesonwriting #nothingiswastedonthewriter #crescentdragonwagonsfearlesswriting #womenshistorymonth #irishwomen

Should you postpone telling your story because you’re afraid? No, because then you will never begin. These wise, self-evaluating words from contemporary Irish novelist Helen Cullen clarify one fear many would-be writers have, with some legitimacy: that, because they thjink it ought to come naturally, and they have to try and put in effort, clearly they shouldn’t write. Born in 1981, Cullen didn’t start writing until 30. Why? Because, as many would-be writers do, she fell for the myth of inspiration: the false idea that good writing appears fully formed and perfect, and that, if you’re a real writer, it comes easy. But comparing the finished work of a writer one admires with one’s own first draft is never a fair comparison; one can never know how many drafts it took for the admired writer to get to what the reader is reading. Cullen (her THE TRUTH MUST DAZZLE GRADUALLY, published in the U.S. as THE DAZZLING TRUTH, came out in 2020), is the third, and so far, the youngest, of our posts on what various Irish writers have said about writing. And boy, do we ever think she nails it on what we might call toxic perfectionism. As she found out (and as you, too, will discover if you write or if you take a Fearless Writing™ with Crescent Dragonwagon) most good work takes many, many drafts to get there. As CD says, “First drafts are drafty.” Expect your initial drafts to have big gaping holes through which the wind blows. What to do? Get your first draft down and then revise, rewrite, revise, rewrite. #helencullen #irish #irishamericanheritagemonth #irishwriters #irishliterature #stpatricksday #quotesonwriting #nothingiswastedonthewriter #crescentdragonwagonsfearlesswriting #womenshistorymonth #irishwomen

Work has hit me like a landslide, slowing me down on other things. I’m still only at the start of this but enjoying it so far. I’ve honestly never read much of Stephen King’s work but I like his voice and his direct style. So far, this reads as an autobiography with little tid bits like this one poking up every now and then. #currentread #readingaboutwriting #bookish #reading #2024reads #onwriting #writingjourney #booksta #bookstagram #reader #books #read #currentreads #quotesonwriting

This is so true of crime writing! I love being able to explore some of the sides of human nature that I don’t fully understand. I’ve been able to take real traits from people who have hurt me and comprehend them from a different perspective. It’s fascinating to imagine what people are willing to do in the right circumstances and how they behave in response to dramatic situations. It is such deliciously dark writing! ✍🏻🖤 . #uninspiredwriters #writersofinstagram #writingcommunity #writer #writerscommunity #writersofig #writeaway #writerslife #crimewritersofinstagram #writinginspiration #writinglife #writingcommunityofinstagram #writingsociety #amwriting #writingblog #writingmisconceptions #writingblogger #writingmotivation #writingquotes #writingquote #writerquotes #quotesonwriting #crimewriter #crimewriting #amwritingcrime #thrillerwriter

Reading Stephen King’s “On Writing” is simply discovering myriad gems like this one: a reminder that no matter what you’re writing painting drawing or dancing, if you are a creative, then art is the support for your life. It is a part of you, and letting it out is what breathes joy into your years. This can be particularly difficult for us all to remember when our years are also filled with soccer games and early meetings and grocery shopping. Make time for your life’s blood. Make time for your art. ❤️✍🏻 #stephenkingquotes #writingadvice #writermotivation #onwriting #quotesonwriting #howtobecreative

It may sound simple, but this is the challenge and the drive with my writing. I think it’s the goal of so many writers to strike a chord in the heart of their readers whether it’s to make them stop and think, laugh, cry, or leave a piece of their story with them forever. With each line I write for my fiction book I continue to be amazed and admire the authors who have come before me and are able to do this with their writing. 💜✍️📚 #fictionwriter #writingmotivation #quotesonwriting #writersofinstagram #writing #writers #mayaangelou #fiction #womenwhowrite #indieauthor

I don't think this was written to writers, but those first lines just spoke to my author heart. People aren't longing to be impressed with my book, they just want to feel at home. They just want characters who are real and relatable. My book should be a place they want to spend time. Just like home. 9/4/2023, 6:40:43 PM

Then, as if no one had ever tried before, try to say what you see and feel and love and lose... ...Describe your sorrows and desires, the thoughts that pass through your mind and your belief in some kind of beauty - describe all these with heartfelt, silent, humble sincerity and, when you express yourself, use the Things around you, the images from your dreams, and the objects that you remember. If your everyday life seems poor, don’t blame it; blame yourself; admit to yourself that you are not enough of a poet to call forth its riches; because for the creator there is not poverty and no poor, indifferent place. And even if you found yourself in some prison, whose walls let in none of the world’s sounds – wouldn’t you still have your childhood, that jewel beyond all price, that treasure house of memories? Turn your attentions to it. Try to raise up the sunken feelings of this enormous past; your personality will grow stronger, your solitude will expand and become a place where you can live in the twilight, where the noise of other people passes by, far in the distance. - And if out of this turning-within, out of this immersion in your own world, poems come, then you will not think of asking anyone whether they are good or not. Nor will you try to interest magazines in these works: for you will see them as your dear natural possession, a piece of your life, a voice from it. A work of art is good if it has arisen out of necessity. That is the only way one can judge it. ~ Rainer Maria Rilke #rilke #deadmanspressink #centralmusedivision #albanyny #growth #poetrycommunity #quotesonwriting #beyourself #become #bemagnificent #beatnikocculture #occulture #stayliterary
