Paul Auster‘s books had a great influence on my development as a songwriter. They are characterised by a deep humanity and a curiosity as to why we fail and yet can accept ourselves. That this spring has now run out of water is sad news. I remembered this letter I had received. His autobiography 'From Hand to Mouth' had shown me new perspectives at the time and led me to found the Planeausters, with whom I have written and published 5 albums. . RIP Paul Auster. I have loved his books since the 1990s when I discovered his litterature while living in Brooklyn, NY. Starting with the New York Trilogy, they accompanied me all my life, the last being Baumgartner. They transported me back to my years in NY. His storytelling was spellbinding. He was brave and generous till the end. #paulauster #americannovelist #brooklyn

Leggete Crane! ———— #lhotelazzurro #bluehotel #francescofranconeri #bookstagramhotel #mattioli1885 #mattioli1885books #mattioli1885experiencelight #experiencelight #narrativaamericana #narrativaamericanacontemporanea #americannovelist #americannovelists #instabook #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookblogger #bookblog #booklover #bookbloggers #booklovers #instabooks

“There must always be some pretentiousness about literature, or else no one would take its pains or endure its disappointments.” #GlenwayWescott Born April 11, 1901 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ (PART 2) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Wescott and Wheeler travelled to Europe in fall of 1921, ending up in Paris, France. The couple socialized with Ernest Hemingway, #FScottFitzgerald and Gertrude Stein. Hemingway was privately homophobic, and Stein was less than impressed with Wescott, as described in Toklas’ autobiography. Wescott published #TheAppleoftheEye, his first novel, in 1924. A year later, he and Monroe moved from Paris to Villefranche-sur-Mer in the south of France. There befriending #JeanCocteau. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In 1926, the couple met #GeorgePlattLynes, an eighteen-year-old minister’s son from New Jersey, living in France to prepare for college. Mutually infatuated, the couple and Lynes shared a home for 17 years. In 1929, Wescott wrote in a letter to Lynes, “It is more than affection that makes me want for you, and more particularly for myself, all the quality, the sureness and inquietude, the farewell kiss and the future blessing, of our brotherhood. You are the nourishment and no one of us has failed.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ By the time Wescott published #TheGrandmothers: A Family Portrait (1927), he was considered a major #Americannovelist. Critics praised the best-selling novel, and it received the #HarperPrize for distinguished fiction in 1927. Wescott’s #GoodbyeWisconsin (1928), a collection of stories, presents the oppressiveness of the Midwest. RELEASED TODAY! The latest in Percival Everett’s long string of restlessly inventive novels, ‘James’ seems destined to become his popular breakthrough. Even if you don’t know his writing, you may well know ‘American Fiction,’ the recent feature film adapted from Everett’s brilliant ‘Erasure.’ The Washington Post calls Everett’s latest a “sly response to ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’… While [Mark Twain’s novel] lampooned American society through the naiveté of its young narrator, ‘James’ critiques White racism with the sharp insight of a character who’s felt the lash… What’s most striking, ultimately, is the way ‘James’ both honors and interrogates ‘Huck Finn,’ along with the nation that reveres it.” @doubledaybooks #percivaleverett #downtownkingston #supportlocalygk #ygk #ygklove #ygksmallbusiness #ygkbiz #ygkbusiness #shopygk #shoplocalygk #novelideakingston #mydowntownktown #downtownkingston #americannovel #americannovelist #huckleberryfinn #marktwain #blackwriters #blacklit #blackliterature #africanamericanwriters #americanfiction #americanfictionmovie

Gone with the Wind is one of the best-selling books of all time, but let’s go back to the 19th century when Uncle Tom’s Cabin was the best-selling book of the century. Before that, there was Charlotte Temple, A Tale of Truth by Susanna Rowson. It was America’s bestseller, published in England in 1791 and America four years later. It has gone through over two hundred editions. Mrs. Rowson, who was born sometime in 1762, was the first woman geographer and an early supporter of female education. In addition to being a novelist, she was a poet, playwright, stage actress, and educator. She is most well known for Charlotte Temple, but she also wrote Victoria, The Inquisitor, Mary or the Test of Honour, and many other works. Warercolor miniature portrait of Susanna Rowson courtesy of the University of Virginia Library. Rowson is related to poet E.E. Margaret Mitchell is fourth from the left. “Commencement Day of 1939 at Smith College saw Margaret receiving an honorary Master of Arts degree. In September, the Marshes made their last move in Atlanta, to the Della Manta apartment house at 1268 Piedmont Avenue. This was in the Ansley Park neighborhood which had developed into one of the most pleasant residential quarters since the time Eugene Mitchell built his Peachtree Street house. The Della Manta was more spacious than 4 East Seventeenth Street, and the Marshes’ second-floor apartment had an extra bedroom which was turned into an office where Margaret labored with Miss Baugh over contracts, correspondence, and the schedule of engagements with visitors on various errands.” Swipe to see the Della Manta apartments. The newspaper caption attached reads: “Dr. Gayatri Spivak lives in the apartment at One South Prado, where Miss Mitchell once lived. Paul Theroux has a new novel, “Burma Sahib,” in shops now. It’s a fictional account of Eric Blair’s early life as a colonial policeman in Burma when it was part of the British empire. Blair would later become famous as the novelist George Orwell. Theroux’s recreation of Burma in the 1920s is something to behold, but then this is the author of “The Mosquito Coast” and dozens of other fine novels and travel books that have taken readers to exotic places. A true war story is never moral. It does not instruct, nor encourage virtue, nor suggest models of proper human behavior, nor restrain men from doing the things men have always done. If a story seems moral, do not believe it. If at the end of a war story you feel uplifted, or if you feel that some small bit of rectitude has been salvaged from the larger waste, then you have been made the victim of a very old and terrible lie. ~ Tim O’Brien, “The Things They Carried” #timobrien #timobrienauthor #thethingstheycarried #novelist #americannovelist #vietnam #vietnamwar

Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote The space between the notes in music is where the it sounds sweetest. The unspoken words that compel us to listen. In Breakfast at Tiffany's Truman Capote provides two points between characters, their actions and motives allowing us to fill in those gaps. Our imaginings of his characters resonating more than his descriptions ever could. An aspiring writer and his admiration for his upstairs neighbour. Lining behind the rest of her New York suitors all vying for her attention and affections. Holly Golightly living the lavish lifestyle of a socialite in the 1940s, the grapevine of gossip running hot about the young girl that rose from nothing. A budding Hollywood icon trying to blossom, a woman before her time, her country roots sprawling upon the footpath; unable and unwilling to fasten. Herself chasing what she was freed from, and what may abandon us all. Included here are three other short stories, varied - capturing various human emotion and for mine less developed than Breakfast at Tiffany's that had me at Holly Golightly. A name that reads like a breathe of fresh air. Rating: 3.9 / 5 Recommended for those who want a taste of Truman Capote. “She was beautiful, but not like those girls in the magazines. She was beautiful, for the way she thought. She was beautiful, for the sparkle in her eyes when she talked about something she loved. She was beautiful, for her ability to make other people smile, even if she was sad. No, she wasn’t beautiful for something as temporary as her looks. She was beautiful, deep down to her soul.” — F. Remembering American writer and activist James Baldwin - (02/08/1924 – 01/12/1987) - a sketch . “The children are always ours, every single one of them, all over the globe; and I am beginning to suspect that whoever is incapable of recognizing this may be incapable of morality.” - James Baldwin . “But the state of Israel was not created for the salvation of the Jews; it was created for the salvation of Western interests. This is what is becoming clear (I must say it was always clear to me). The Palestinians have been paying for the British colonial policy of "divide and rule" and for Europe's guilty Christian conscience for more than thirty years.” - James Baldwin 1979 . #jamesbaldwin #baldwin #jamesarthurbaldwin #literature #americanliterature #americannovelist #notesofanativeson #giovannisroom #gotellitonthemountain #anothercountry #ifbealestreetcouldtalk #palestine #freepalestine #antiracism #exile #anticolonialism #thenation #politicalactivism #civilrights #gayliberation #harlem #newyork #usa #art #artwork #illustration #drawing #sketch #portrait #codedsalt

VN: The Life and Art of Vladimir Nabokov by Andrew Field. Published in London. Vladimir Nabokov was born as the old Russian Empire entered its final period, and although he spent most of his life as an emigre, he nurtured rich, personal visions of his country, and, as the author states, 'Russian culture was, both consciously and unconsciously, always his guiding star.' Nabokov lived in Berlin, Cambridge (where he went to University), Paris and then for 18 years each in America and Switzerland. Nabokov was an eccentric academic whose genius embraced a wide range of interests from literature to lepidoptery; his life was colourful and successful. #nabokov #vn #vladimirnabokov #biography #russiannovelist #americannovelist #russiannovel #andrewfield #paris #lolita #ada #switzerland #russianliterature #russianclassics #booksforsale #motherrussiabooks #bookstagram #motherrussiabooksmelbourne #russianbooksmelbourne

𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐰𝐢𝐫𝐞 (𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐥) 𝐛𝐲 𝐋𝐞𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 Genre: Thriller Lee is an Acclaimed Writer of Thrillers and is also one of my favourites. It is always mentioned on the last page of his every book that every nine seconds a Jack Reacher Titles gets sold across the globe. Jack Reacher is the world's favourite character and his fans always vouch for him in the form of movies and series. This led to the creation of two Feature films starring Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher and now is currently being led by Alan Ritchson in Prime Original Series. Jack Reacher is the coolest kind of guy. You can compare him to America's Equivalent of Sir Author Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes but rather set in Modern Times. Retired as an Army Major and an Investigator from the US Army, Reacher bores the quirkiest attitude towards everyone and assumes that life has unexpected turns that can alter life in all different ways from which there is no turning back. Tripwire has Reacher working down in Key West, Florida digging wells for Swimming Pools, where suddenly a Private Investigator turns up in town asking for him. Upon arriving in the town, this Private Investigator called Costello is killed by some armed men and from there the fun ride starts for the Reacher as to why and who is inquiring about him which endures him back on to the path of exploring the Vietnam War and to stopping the Veterans who are now running a cunning plot across America. Jack Reacher Fans should not miss this title. 💫 Povestea începe cu nașterea acesteia, fiind considerată o zeiță a vrăjitoriei și a plantelor and I like witches 😬. #circe #bookstagramm #confesiuniliterare #bookreview #bookgram #fictionbooks #bookstagramromania #booklover #slowreader #greekmithology #americannovelist #cititoaredinromania #readersofromania #abookishgirl #instabookstagram

📍Charles Frazier (born November 4, 1950) is an American novelist. He won the 1997 National Book Award for Fiction for Cold Mountain. 📍Is Cold Mountain true story?👇 The author based the book on the Civil War service of William P. Inman, Twenty-fifth North Carolina Infantry Regiment. The answer to the second question would have been more difficult to answer if it had not been for the remarkable efforts of a former War Department adjutant general, Fred C. Ainsworth. 📍What is the plot of Cold Mountain?👇 Cold Mountain, set during the American Civil War — the pivotal conflict in our nation's history — is the story of a soldier who wonders (as many have and alas many still do today) whether the violence he has endured has in some way ruined him and made him unworthy of love. 📍Who is the hero in Cold Mountain?👇 Inman. The male protagonist. The novel follows Inman's journey home from the slaughter he has witnessed in the Civil War. Inman is intelligent, literate, and sensitive, although he often appears emotionally reserved. #birthday #birthdayinliterature #novelist #novel #Americanwriter #americannovelist #charlesfrazier @prof.vineetpandey_author
