I ventured out of the 18th century to read The Secret Rooms because it looked so good. “A true story of a haunted castle, a plotting duchess, & a family secret.” How could it not be good? And indeed, it did not disappoint. A very good mystery. A true, sad story that reminds one that wealth and happiness have a loose correlation at best. David Bailey is an English fashion photographer best known for his images of celebrities, models, and musicians. Though he is also known for his photography book NWI (1982), which documented the process of gentrification in the London neighborhoods of Primrose Hill and Camden. Born on January 2, 1938 in London, United Kingdom, Bailey dropped out of high school to serve in the Royal Air Force where he developed an interest in the photography of Henri Cartier-Bresson. Over the course of the 1960s and 70s, the artist gained attention from the press after a string of high-profile marriages to Jean Shrimpton, Catherine Deneuve, and Marie Helvin. In 1965, he published his first photography book Box of Pin-Ups, a collection of black-and-white images portraying Mick Jagger, The Beatles, Twiggy, and Andy Warhol, along with several other celebrity figures. Bailey has gone on to receive the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire from Queen Elizabeth II, and in 2016 a Lifetime Achievement award from the International Center of Photography in New York. The artist’s photographs are held in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Bailey currently lives and works in London, United Kingdom. Es ist vor allem die persönliche Leidensgeschichte der Fey von Hassel, der Tochter des Botschafters Ulrich von Hassel, der in Rom stationiert war und der im Herbst 1944 von den Nazis wegen des Attentatsversuchs auf Hitler hingerichtet worden war. Im Weiteren werden die Angehörigen der Attentäter verhaftet. Sie wird von der Gestapo zunächst zu Befragungen aus ihrem Haus abgeholt. Dabei werden ihr die beiden kleinen Söhne Corrado und Roberto weggenommen und in ein ihr unbekanntes Kinderheim gebracht. Sehr akribisch und detailreich wird hier beschrieben, was sich in den nächsten Wochen und Monaten zugetragen hat. Von einem Gefängnis zum anderen wird sie mit weiteren sog. prominenten Häftlingen gebracht. Sie wird von Norditalien nach Österreich verbracht, von dort nach Norddeutschland ins KZ Stutthoff, dann zurück ins KZ Buchenwald und KZ Dachau. Schließlich werden sie und andere Gefangene in ein Berghotel gebracht. Es handelt sich vorliegend nicht um einen Roman. Vielmehr wird diese Geschichte durch zahlreiche Zitate und persönliche Anmerkungen der vielen Beteiligten unterstützt. Dadurch erhält dieses Buch einen dokumentarischen Touch. Aber das ist so gut eingewebt, dass das einem beim Lesen gar nicht groß auffällt. Atemlos und mit größtem Erstaunen habe ich verfolgt, welche Torturen Fey von Hassel sowie ihre Mitgefangenen zu erleiden hatten. Man kann das hier gar nicht beschreiben. Die Gräueltaten der Nazis sind unbeschreibbar. Der Alltag in einem KZ wird geschildert, die Flucht aus den KZs vor den herannahenden russischen Truppen, die Pläne Heinrich Himmlers, sich selbst zu retten und die Gefangenen als Geisel in der Hinterhand zu halten, die unmenschlichen Verhörmethoden der Gestapo uvm.. Im KZ Stutthoff waren 1944 ca. 60.000 Menschen inhaftiert, 12 Mio russische Bürger wurden durch Deutsche im zweiten Weltkrieg ermordet, mehr als 2 Millionen Flüchtlinge aus Ostpreußen auf der Flucht vor den Russen. ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
