Last-chance-saloon for entry to #sewaprilblouse24 today! Here’s a viscose linen Anthea blouse I just sewed up last week. I know I don’t need to sell anybody on this blouse pattern. This is my third Anthea after making one in viscose and another in double gauze jacquard (yummy). I usually French seam throughout so I can sigh happily at the insides before I put it on. I forgot to do that at the outset so this one has flat-felled seams at the shoulder and side seams with french-seamed sleeves. I have managed to sew my buttons on too tightly…which is something I do when I’m excited near the end, it translates into gusto, obviously! They’ll give with life and laundry time. The viscose linen is one of the exclusive prints from @minervadotcom. I like this substrate as it’s soft without being flimsy. So it’s time for one last, deep curtsey to Gabrielle and Ruan for hosting another challenge for us. Due to my late arrival it’s been brief but brilliant. Today I wore my new Anthea blouse and felt like a bit of a bad ass bitch*, a rare thing currently, so I chose to record the moment for posterity. You are most welcome, monochrome fans. Life is intensely busy at the minute and shows no sign of stopping or slowing down much. I seem to spend a lot of my time driving people hither and thither, and despite having a nice little walking commute for myself, there is still far too much driving around town to be done almost every day. Sitting in a car isn't just a pain in the bum mentally currently though, it is also a pain in the bum/hip/lower back literally, due to a very old injury that flared up (and I ignored) two years ago, which is now back with avengeance and some new issues to accompany it. So, while I am having physio to rehab the injury and reposition the problematic muscles, sitting for prolonged periods in any vehicle is quite painful. But then standing for too long also produces the same result. I am also banned from tunning, lifting most weights, and yoga, all of which i rely on to help feel better/normal/postive about my body. Much grumpiness and swearing has therefore ensued, as well as indulging in wine, malteasers and box sets to offset the general booness of it all. However it does mean that sewing (barring cutting out) is the perfect sport for such times as it mixes both sitting and standing, with neither taking place for too long. So here are some photos of this latest Anthea, size 14, lengthened by 1.5cm, and with cuffs at a size 6 (narrower by about 5cm), made in glorious geometric black and cream deadstock lawn, with me both sitting and standing. You can't see much detail of the blouse in the first pic, but I love that photo so it's the front cover to the post, because you have to take the wins where you can these days. 👖 PERSEPHONE 👖 Ou le pantalon qui mettait en valeur le booty/le popotin/le boyo (appelez le comme vous voulez 😅). J’avoue que quand @martine_and_the_sewing_machine a proposé ce projet commun de persephone à notre dernière soirée couturières j’avais quelques doutes sur le seyant sur ma morpho (jambes larges et tissu épais j’avais un peu peur de ressembler à un tonneau 😂). Here is my review for Conflicts and Loyalties by Anna Allen I got into this dark fantasy book straight away and I just loved it. The plotting and the storyline were brilliantly written. The book was very easy to read and I enjoyed the author's writing style. Some of the chapters were very short which is what I like as the book seems to read quicker! Leonne and Fitzsimmons finally get their wish and enough evidence for the King to annul Leonne’s marriage to Roland so she is free to marry Fitzsimmons. The couple are happy until an old flame of Fitzsimmons spoils it. Then the Master comes up with a plan to capture the two young things and try to get them on side so he can try to find the key to The Book of Realms which will give more power than ever. What a read, I was riveted by this point of the book. It held my attention for the rest of the book. A brilliant read and a great series. This is a brilliant author to keep an eye on. Blurb : FOR THREE YEARS, Gritheim has been torn asunder. Pestilences ravage the land, and the harvests have failed again, driving up the cost of bread. Emaciated animals are dying. Some good and some not so good characters. I do love Leonne and Fitzsimmons. I loved how he was with Leonne.The way the half bird half dragon were described. Creepy. I Didn't like orella she was conifing. I did like Fitzsimmons when he changed into a cat. I liked the mind reading between Leonne and Fitzsimmons. That did surprise me. Lots of fighting. Today is my stop on the #conflictandloyalties book tour! A brilliant continuation of the Battle of Gritheim series. My review can be found on my blog, goodreads, storygraph and pending on amazon. I really enjoyed Rise of the Immortals and have to say that Conflict and Loyalties only got better and it’s not just because there is a hound and cat that can talk with Leonne! The main thing I find that drags me into this series is the characters, followed closely by the plot. I have enjoyed seeing Leonne and Fitzsimmons grow and develop as characters, although at one point I did want to shake Leonne up a little bit! I have to say though, no spoilers, it was very in keeping with her character and made her incredibly realistic as well. The other thing I enjoyed was how this novel had a little more world building around the courts, court intrigue and the different factions involved. Previously I would have said I wasn’t a fan of a lot of romance but I have to say that Allen depicts Leonne and Fitzsimmons growing and tested relationship so well that I was so hooked and invested. I do also like though that it isn’t the main driving force of the plot. Allen’s writing is wonderful at bringing her world to life and I cannot wait to continue this journey with our protagonists. It has a bit of everything sword and sorcery, magical creatures, intrigue, battles, and a touch of romance. My first attempt at the Persephone pants, by the lovely pattern designer Anna Allen who I've followed for years on here. Her instructions were so clear, it was the first pattern I've enjoyed making. It didn't go quite to plan as I made a toile in polycotton to check fit, made small adjustments, but this beautiful organic cord came up way, unexpectedly bigger! So I learnt a huge lesson that you have to test fit as you go, baste, then sew properly. I am proud of myself for figuring out the amends; I took out the original darts and created two each side evenly spaced, then when it was still too big took a lot out of the seat. I basted first! The pacing was mixed, though; it would pick up the pace, slow down a bit, then pick up again. The execution felt a bit weak, and I found the characters to be underdeveloped. I liked Fitzsimmons initially, but eventually I struggled to connect with any of them. I think readers already familiar with epic fantasy might enjoy it more. The symmetry works really well. This is book 1 in The Battle for Gritheim series and starts to introduce the big bad that's rising up to take control in the fantasy land of Gritheim. The prologue introduces the prophesy foretelling of a boy and girl that will become redeemers if they succeed in destroying evil. I did switch over to the Kindle Unlimited version of this and the editing could be tightened. The narrative voice often headhopped between characters, which jarred me and broke the flow, and shares information after the fact, rather than showing us. The concept of vampires (whires) in this world seems to come quite suddenly as these aren't your typical blood-sucking creatures. I'm intrigued to see where book 2 takes us, with the pair's developing powers and the increasing pressure applied by the darker forces. I did like Josse and Leonné and how they met. I did not like Jacque he was evil. I did like Danton and how he treated Achard and got rid of him. Good characters well some were. I liked Fitzsimmons and how he saved Leonné. I did like scene with Orella and Guiscard with the gloves. I'm looking forward to the next book. 5*. Blurb. Frist of two book tours today. This one is a brilliant dark fantasy and I cannot wait to start book two. It ticks all my boxes Full review on my blog, goodreads and pending on amazon. I love fantasy and when it is dark fantasy that is all the better. Rise of the Immortals has all the good things you can expect from a dark fantasy, magic, curses, ghosts, immortals (obviously) and a lavishly developed world. Best of all it has a rather nice relationship built over time and genuinely between the main characters, Josse and Leonne. I will admit it did take me a little time for me to like Leonne but by the mid to end I was routing for both her and Josse. The thing I enjoyed the most was this doesn’t follow a set ‘norm’ for fantasy and doesn’t do instant resolutions or relationships be they romantic or platonic between characters. Everything is paced in a natural flow and thus feels more natural. On top of this we have a wonderful and vivid world that is populated with so many interesting characters (both good and bad) and really gets you invested. This is also done in such a way that you don’t get long pieces of information or world dumping in one place. We learn about the places, people and magic bit by bit in a way that means you know what is going on, can tell it’s well thought out but you aren’t given a lot of information in one go and its not really referenced again (a bit of a pet peeve of mine). I have to say I hadn’t read anything by Allen before this and I am lucky enough to be a tour for the second novel but I will certainly be reading the other works by this author. They not only write beautifully and create a believable and vivid world but they have memorable characters too. This skirt was self drafted to make my own twist on a joyful skirt I found on Pinterest from the designer Mira Mikati. I could never afford this skirt in real life.... but I can make it, and in a way that fits my style (swipe to the last slide for a photo of the inspo). I self drafted a simple skirt from black twill and used the remainder of my off white rick rack from @blackbirdfabrics as well as all of the different sizes of black and white rick rack I could get my hands on from @joann_stores .I pinned everything in place prior to making a final decision on placement and very carefully checked it from all angles prior to stitching everything inside the waistband. The original skirt has a huge variance in the length of the rick rack, and that was one of the things I really loved about it! I feel so silly when I wear this, in the best and happiest way. The top is the @annaallenclothing Anthea blouse. It's been on my list for ages and is my first finished make of 2024. I'm wearing it SO much already and it was a pleasure to put together. This is a size 12 with no mods and is made out of a beautiful unbleached linen from @fabricsstorecom with buttons from @saltlakesewciety.
