Since today is the last day of Autism Awareness Month, I wanted to share this post. I know many people want to ask for acceptance instead of awareness, but I believe you cannot accept something until you are aware of it. For this reason, I am happy to celebrate Autism Awareness Month and pray that awareness leads to acceptance that leads to inclusion. A parent of an autistic child (or ADHD or AuDHD) just wants the same opportunities for their child that every other parent wants. *I believe there is an incredible overlap between Autism and ADHD, which is why I typically include both in these conversations 🧠Share this with an Autism/ADHD parent! ♾️Follow @thatrelatablemama for more neurodiverse-affirming content #Momoftwo #girlmom #momlife #autism #audhd #adhd #autismawareness #autismacceptance #adhdawareness #adhdacceptance #autismspectrum #onthespectrum #neurodivergentkids #neurodivergent #ocd #spd #sensory #neurodiversity #girlswithautism #autismingirls #autisticgirls #autisticwomen #adhdgirls #adhdwomen #autismmom #adhdingirls #parenting #parenthood #relatable

About 10 hours in the car for less than 24 hours in Indy. We made it for my grandma’s 90th birthday party, but I didn’t get a picture - mostly because Jess was upset nearly the entire time we were there. She settled down after the party & we had a Mommy/Daughter sleepover at a hotel so we could go swimming - which she loved. Today we visited the Indianapolis Zoo with Papaw. I’m exhausted, but I’m glad we got to spend some time with family. #jessanadean #autismmom #girlswithautism #progressnotperfection #differentnotless #autismjourney #justthetwoofus #thathashtaglookslikeitsayswoof

Something More by Jackie Khalilieh is a debut YA novel about Jessie who is such a loveable character. She is Palestinian- Canadian (like the author), a 90s lover, soon to be freshman, and was just diagnosed as autistic. She is determined for high school to be different. This book is really quite special. I love it as an adult but I know that if I read this when I was in high school it would have been my favorite up to the point that I would have read it over and over again. 🤗 The way the author addresses Jessie’s autism was so real and so honest. The way she addresses high school mishaps and growth is real too. As someone who is highly sensitive and didn’t learn about that till I was older I felt in some way that I could relate to Jessie. At first I was bothered by the love triangle but then it became something special. We get Beautiful life lessons for young adults navigating the dating world. Jessie learned what love truly looks and feels like, what she deserves, and how to use her words to express all this. **Also, thank you to @abooknerdsmusings for the recommendation! I’m looking forward to reading more from Jackie Khalilieh. 🇵🇸 🇨🇦 🍉 ❤️ 🧩 #ReadPalestine #readpalestinianwriters #readdiversebooks #yabookreview #booksforpalestine #autisticbooks #arabbooks #abooknerdsmusings #books #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #currentread #palestine #canadian #readingforpalestine #readpalestineweek #yabookstagram #love #90saesthetic #readmorechallenge #bookaddict #readersofinstagram #readersgonnaread #autismawareness #girlswithautism #highlysensitive

Super proud of this little bean today. Different coach and she didn’t even look back, came out smiling having worked hard and ‘Star of the Week’ 🥰 All the holiday camps and workshops (as well as being a massive child care win) means she’s had the opportunity to get to know so many of the lovely @gymfinitykids Cambridge coaches, so although we can’t change Chlo’s dislike of things being different, she feels happy and safe to go in regardless. #autismawareness #girlswithautism

Important post today from @brad_riches who hit back after trolls accused him of “faking autism” on @bbuk 🙄 Read his full response below: “We have always been presented stereotypes in the media telling us how autistic people are meant to look, behave and present. Just because I don’t fit into what you have seen before and what you think ‘being autistic’ is, doesn’t mean I am not autistic. The autism spectrum is a SPECTRUM. My good friend @chloeshayden says it’s a colour wheel, which I love! Every little part of a colour wheel is a different part of being autistic, and each autistic person would have a different colour and square in the colour wheel. We are all different, but we are still autistic. I’m not on earth to meet your expectations of what autism is. But not meeting your false expectations doesn’t mean a false representation of autism.” Tell them, Bradley! 👏

🌟 Unveiling Autism in Girls! 🌸 Are girls with autism hiding in plain sight? It's possible! Girls often "mask" symptoms, making detection challenging. Here are 7 telltale signs: 1️⃣ Reliance on peers: They may lean heavily on other children for guidance and communication. 2️⃣ Unique interests: Girls with autism often have intense, specific passions that dominate their focus. 3️⃣ Sensory sensitivity: They may exhibit heightened responses to sensory stimuli, such as textures, sounds, or lights. 4️⃣ Emotional struggles: Difficulty regulating emotions, especially when frustrated, is common. 5️⃣ Mood fluctuations: Unusual depression, anxiety, or moodiness might manifest, reflecting internal struggles. 6️⃣ Social challenges: Making and maintaining friendships can be challenging due to difficulties in social interaction. 7️⃣ Quiet demeanor: They may be described as quiet or shy, masking their inner experiences. Recognizing these signs is crucial for early intervention and support. Jessa continues to make great progress with swimming… but she also continues to struggle to follow directions. And, for the second time, we had to stop her swimming lesson early because she was being aggressive toward her teacher. I would give anything to know what’s going on in her body and mind. I hate seeing her struggle and I worry about her being kicked out of swim lessons. We’ll try again next week & continue on our journey to figure out her behavior. #jessanadean #autismmom #girlswithautism #autismjourney #differentnotless #progressnotperfection #itsbeenalongweekanditsonlytuesday

Hi! My name is Céline (26) and I got diagnosed with autism at age 22 ✨ Unfortunately, the journey to my autism diagnosis (like for many women) wasn't very smooth: experiencing burnout at 17, having to stop school, visiting multiple psychologists (without receiving an autism diagnosis), until I was completely exhausted and in a constant state of severe sensory overload, all while still having no idea what was going on with me. Luckily, my autism diagnosis marked a turning point and I could finally start moving forward instead of backward 🤗 Now, four years later, I'm grateful for how far I've come (including the many struggles 🙈), but at the same time, there's still so much more to learn (and accept). I'd love to take you along here (and more extensively on my blog autilicious.com) on my journey towards an authentic and autism-friendly life ✨ Love, Céline 🌺 . . . . #actuallyautistic #mylifewithautism #unmasked #autism #neurodiversity #neurodivergent #neurodivergentwomen #neurodivergentgirl #neurodivergentgirls #autismawareness #autismcommunity #autismacceptance #autismspectrum #asd #autistic #autisticwomen #autisticgirls #autisticgirl #autismgirls #aspergirl #autismwomen #womenwithautism #girlswithautism #latediagnosedautism #latediagnosedautistic #lateautismdiagnosis #autisminwomen #autisminadults

Thanks to the most amazing hairdresser in the world Luna got her first official haircut yesterday! And it was a success. @kkartrip_ was so patient and accommodating and made this whole experience as sensory friendly as possible (She was literally willing to wear an inflatable dinosaur costume for Luna if she had to)! 🤣🤗 🫶🏻 Hair cuts can be really challenging for autistic toddlers and it definitely was not easy for Luna. She said she was scared several times on the way there, she was nervous about the cape, she wanted me to hold her the entire time, but she did it! And she was so brave. She pretended to be a shark and @kkartrip_ just went along with it which was perfect and then after Luna was finished getting a haircut, she got a quail egg with a “short head top!” as a surprise! Btw an egg with a short head top is an egg that’s more round and not so oblong - the short head tops as Luna calls them are her absolute favorite! That’s all she wants for her birthday just a bunch of short head tops 😅😂 Anyway, Luna is so proud of herself and has told everybody she has seen since then, “I got my first haircut and that’s why my hair looks so beautiful and I got a real live quail egg with a short head top and it’s so special!” 🥹😍👏🏼 Yay Luna! Mommy is so proud of you too! And you are so beautiful my little moon 🌙🥰💕 Swipe to see her surprise 🥚 #autismawareness #autismacceptance #autismmom #girlswithautism #neurodivergent #toddlersofinstagram #momlife #girlmom #sensoryprocessingdisorder #quaileggs

#throwback of me and my biggest human to celebrate #autismacceptancemonth I’m a lucky boy you see, both my sisters are autistic and are absolutely incredible wee humans. Autism in girls remains very misunderstood so let me raise a few things on their behalf 🌈 most autistic girls are high maskers which means they do not show their struggles, anxieties and differences when not in their safe space. This can often result in sensory overload and meltdowns when at home (particular after an overstimulating school day or social event) 🌈 Girls can copy their peers and learn to mask via role play. This can make autism very difficult to spot in relation to their male peers. 🌈 Autistic girls can be brutally honest and blunt. No harm is meant but due to a lack of social understanding there is no filter. This can come across as rude but this is not the intention. 🌈 Girls are less likely to receive an autism diagnosis than their male peers. Missed autism diagnosis can result in females being misdiagnosed as having anxiety/depression/personality disorder and are at significant risk of eating disorders. 🌈 When my humans lost their last dog, the golden retriever legend called Cooper, my little humans found this very overwhelming (as did the parents I may add 😭). My eldest human was only 5 at the time and stated that ‘we’re not a real family anymore because we don’t have cooper’…and that’s when they got ME!🧡 In all seriousness, the power of a dog when supporting neurodivergent children is indescribable 🐾 🐾 🐾 #autism #autismacceptance #autismdog #neurodivergent #girlswithautism #scottishinstadogs #labrador_lovers #childrenanddogs #growingupwithdogs #autisticmeltdowns #femaleneurodivergence

Have you caught Dinosaur on @bbciplayer yet? 🦕 According to The @guardian, this “spiky and heartfelt comedy might be powered by the lead character’s autism, but it’s not defined by it. It gives people with the condition a long overdue voice.” The show stars Glasgow sisters Nina and Evie, played by Ashley Storrie (who is autistic) and Kat Ronney, as they navigate life, love, and neurodivergence. We just binged the whole thing 🤫

Parenting a young girl on the autism spectrum during puberty can present unique challenges and opportunities for growth. Here are some tips to support her through this journey: 1️⃣ Open Communication: Create a safe and open space for conversations. Encourage her to express her feelings and questions, and be a good listener. 2️⃣ Visual Supports: Visual schedules and social stories can help her understand the changes she's experiencing and what to expect during puberty. 3️⃣ Sensory Comfort: Sensory sensitivities may intensify during this time. Provide sensory tools or techniques that soothe her, like weighted blankets or fidget toys. Remember, each girl is unique. Tailor your approach to her individual needs, celebrate her successes, and remind her that you're there to support her every step of the way. . . . #AutismParenting #PubertySupport #ParentingTips #AutismAwareness #GrowingUpSpectrum #OpenCommunication #VisualSupports #SensoryComfort #AutismSupport #IndividualizedApproach #EmbraceUniqueness #InclusivityMatters #SensitiveSensory #AutismJourney #ParentingGirls #GrowingTogether #SupportingHer #PubertyAwareness #UnderstandingAutism #CelebratingSuccesses #SupportiveParenting #EmpowerHer #SpectrumLife #GirlsWithAutism #InclusiveLove #UniqueChallenges #ParentingTeens #NavigatingPuberty #AutismCommunity #SupportEveryStep

Professional wrestler @willospreay — otherwise known as The Aerial Assassin — has opened up about living with dyslexia, ADHD, and autism 🎙️ During a recent appearance with @aew, Ospreay said: “All of us autistic kids are so much better than the regular, normal people. We can lock into [things] and do it. To all my autism kids out there, we are top.” When asked to expand on his comments, he said: “There were so many things in my education that I needed help on and I didn’t get that help and it’s not just me, it’s a wide bunch of people. So finding all this out about myself, I just want to show people that like, yeah, I’ve got autism. I have ADHD as well. I’m super dyslexic. I can’t read.” He continued: “But I feel like I’ve got to the point where I am because of all these things that make me who I am and I want to inspire people. So a lot of people don’t take risks on people that do have autism around my area. I would like to hope that seeing me doing this stuff, it does inspire other people.” 💪

Unfortunately, we learned this the hard way. We were promised that a healthcare professional had completed the referral for Lily for occupational therapy. She filled out the paperwork in front of us so I knew she did it but she forgot to send it and I never checked with her that she had sent it because I just assumed she would. Months went by and we decided to check where she was on the waiting list, to be told that she is not on the waiting list, she has no open referral and there is now a 40 week waiting list. The professionals are people too and she apologised for missing this, but this was now a big set back. We put the point across that Lily shouldn’t have to suffer because of other peoples mistakes and they reluctantly agreed to back date the referral, but we had to fight for it! From this incident, I became, what I like to call “that parent” because I find it hard to trust anyone who says they are going to do something for Lily. I would love to sit back and let them all do there thing but to them your child is just a name on a list. They are not living your life. It’s got to a point now where they know who there talking too by the sound of my voice 🤣 so.. > If the system is failing your child then tell them and put in a complaint, nothing changes if we don’t speak up. > Send the emails, bombard them if you have too. > Ask for copies of paperwork that has been sent > Ask the awkward questions. > Write to your local MP and let them know what’s happening in your area. > Been rejected for something - take them to tribunal. Nobody will ever care and push as hard for your child as you will. Add project manager to my CV 💪🏻 #senmum #sendmum #autistic #onthespectrum #asd #girlswithautism

Remember @itsemilykaty ? ✍️ A few weeks ago, we posted about her book — Girl Unmasked — where she details her experiences growing up with undiagnosed autism. She has now given an interview to @bbcnews, where she says “Finding out I was autistic saved my life.” Emily began to feel different as a young child, eventually having her first panic attack on a school trip at 13 years old. “This was the start of panic consuming me. I had tried so hard to fit in, pretending to be like everyone else, but my brain couldn’t do it anymore.” 😓 Over the coming years, Emily describes “rocking under tables, running away from school, and having to be taken off-site when there was a fire drill because I found the sound of the alarm too overwhelming.” And yet? Nobody suggested that she could be autistic 😒 Getting a diagnosis took years, but Emily is now a trustee for the @autisticgirlsnetwork and has written about her journey to help other girls who may be going undiagnosed. To read the full story, Google: “Emily Katy BBC” or visit her Instagram (@itsemilykaty) to learn more about her groundbreaking memoir 📕

Took a break from social media for a while, but had to share these gems from when I was “gone.” We took Jessa to @buildabear for the first time. She had so much fun and did an amazing job building her Kuromi stuffed animal! (A character from Hello Kitty - which she loves!) The BAB employee we worked with was patient and kind, which was such a blessing. It’s always a gamble trying new things, especially in public. But, this was definitely a win! Unfortunately, that evening wasn’t so great. Jessa’s behavior has been increasing again & life can be really hard. I can’t imagine how hard it is for her being unable to tell us what she’s thinking and feeling. I’m so proud of my baby girl, even on the difficult days. Without Autism Without Autism, I would have experienced a typical motherhood. Without Autism, my girls would have entered school without the fight for services. Without Autism, my girls would be able to tell me when they are hurt or do not feel good. Without Autism, it wouldn’t be a guessing game when there is something medically wrong. Without Autism, we wouldn’t have entered into a world of beauty and discovery. Without Autism, we woudn’t have learned about how our brains were created to work in so many different ways and capacities. Without Autism, we wouldn’t have learned how to be the best advocates for our children. Without Autism, I wouldn’t be so brave and bold. I would still be quiet and afraid to speak up. Without Autism, I wouldn’t have become a better teacher for my students and families who may be navigating Autism too. Without Autism, we wouldn’t have met such a huge network of families who get our life. Without Autism, I wouldn’t be getting messages each week from other moms who need help and direction. Moms who need another mom who gets it. Without Autism, we wouldn’t have known about inclusion and acceptance. Without Autism, our hearts wouldn’t have grown so much or our lives been changed. Autism is hard. Autism changed my life. Autism also makes me a better person and I’m honored to join my daughters on this journey. 💙 #autismacceptance #autismawarenessmonth2024 #girlswithautism #fcvblogsquad

Autistic burnout is described by those who experience it as chronic exhaustion, loss of skills, and reduced tolerance to stimulus. Trying to live in a neurotypical world day in and day out can be exhausting, and there are times when you need to take time out, rest, and recharge. As much as we'd like to change the world for you today, sadly, we can't. What we can do though is lend our support to campaigns fighting for a more inclusive world. And in the meantime provide acceptance, support, and an environment where you can just be yourself. In our Nice 2 Meet Ya community there's no need to mask. There's no need to try and fit in. You can just be your wonderful, diverse, unique authentic self 🤗 We're here for you 🩷💛💙 Read more about Understanding Autistic Burnout on the @nationalautisticsociety's website. 🌈hospital appointments🌈 Something I dread.. appointments for P are never easy, she doesn’t sit & wait for anything, ever & 95% of the time there are other people in the waiting room who can’t help but stare 🫠 (if you’re that person.. stop staring😊) I have the worst anxiety attending appointments worrying about how loud, distracting or what mood P will be in. We had a discharge appointment a few weeks ago for Parker’s seizures at the Heath Hospital, my dad works in the hospital so came to the children’s ward with me (always helps having someone with you)🥰 last time we went it wasn’t an easy appointment, P screamed & ran around for 40 mins while we waited. When we signed in at the desk I mentioned Parker has autism & asked if we could go outside in the play area until it was time for her appointment. She asked if we would like to go into the sensory room.. sensory room?!?! 😳 I had no idea about this room, neither did my dad! She told the doctor where we were, put a sign on the door to say the room was occupied & Parker stayed calm in the room the whole hour we waited 🥳 I cannot tell you how rooms like this can change the whole vibe of any appointment😅 for anyone who has an appointment & didn’t know about this room, ask at the desk if it’s free. This was an absolute game changer & we will 100% be using this for future appointments 🥰 #sensory #autism #hospital #sensoryprocessingdisorder #girlswithautism #autismawareness #playroom #nonverbal #nonverbalautism #ALN #SEN #specialneeds #specialeducation #developmentaldelay #autistic

I knew at a young age she was different. She flapped her hands a lot, flicked and licked a lot of objects, rocked so hard against our couch that she developed abrasions on her little spine, and she developed attachments to odd things like beads. She didn't speak until she was four. People kept telling me that she was normal but as she continued to not speak, we knew. I KNEW. She has come so far. We don't call it autism, but AWETISM..different NOT LESS.. She's fukn perfect to me @hannahsdorkylife #autism #girlswithautism #autismawareness #autismacceptance

The signs might look different, but autism affects everyone. Boys get diagnosed with autism 4x more often than girls. Let’s bridge the gap and ensure early support for ALL. #AutismAwareness #GirlsWithAutism #EarlyIntervention

haircuts are not a fan favorite in our household. Gracelyn has the most beautiful hair; thick, natural waves, and beautiful curls. BUT she seeks a lot of deep pressure, specifically to her head. With that comes a lot of knots, matted sections, and a recipe for disaster when it’s time to attempt to brush it. cutting her hair really helps tame it. we’re so fortunate to have an amazing woman who specializes in cutting children’s hair that have special needs — and she comes to the home! she is patient, quick, understanding, and very efficient. this is something so many of us take for granted. But I never will again. I am so unbelievably proud of Gracelyn. Her resilience is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. ♾️🧩 #autistic #autism #nonverbalautism #nonspeakingautism #girlshaveautismtoo #apraxiaofspeech #echolalia #verbalcommunication #communicationchallenges #autismmom #autismmama #autismfamily #autismspectrumdisorder #bekind #kindnessmatters #mentalhealthmatters #lifewithASD #sensoryprocessingdisorder #newlydiagnosedautism #progressnotperfection #speechtherapy #autismacceptance #autismawareness #girlswithautism #autismmom #earlysignsofautism #POAC #parentsofautisticchildren #regulationbeforeexpectation #selfregulation

Our family went to the beach in June 2023 and I quickly noticed that Finley really wanted to be near/in the ocean 🌊 (it calls to me… -Moana) but the sound was extremely overstimulating to her. She would jump with excitement but kept putting her hands over her ears. I had purchased her some headphones a year prior but she didn’t take to them immediately so I didn’t push. I noticed more and more that sounds seemed to be bothering her so I bit the bullet in August and bought her a new pair. We started practicing at home and then at therapy. She immediately took to them and now we don’t travel anywhere without them. Finley’s headphones 🎧 provide a comfort to her and help her manage and navigate the world much easier. She is very sensitive to the sound of water, echoes, and large crowds. We all have a much better experience if she has access to them. We’ve tried lots of brands and kinds but here is the link to our favorite. https://a.co/d/3TcOZHO Making this accommodation has been so helpful in family outings and decreasing meltdowns. We are thankful that our girl has found something that helps her process the world better! #autismacceptance #autismawareness #aprilisautismawarenessmonth #autistic #girlswithautism
