#bookreview «One Day», One Day já era meu conhecido há muitos anos, isto por ter visto o filme de 2011, sem saber que era adaptado de um livro. na altura dilacerou-me por completo, sofri e agonizei com os vinte anos que Emma & Dexter passam numa amizade conturbada, de afetos, mas também de muita dor. o Dexter é uma personagem que irrita qualquer pessoa, que dá vontade de chamar à realidade muitas mas muitas vezes, certas situações em que ele se coloca e decisões que toma é de uma pessoa ficar a falar sozinha… e a Emma, que procura a sua identidade, que gostou de Dexter desde o primeiro momento.. mas que por vários momentos de incompatibilidade, de nunca ser o momento certo, gera esta má comunicação e este mau timing que acompanha praticamente todo a história. provavelmente é um plot bastante conhecido, mais ainda pela recente série da Netflix (que não vi), mas não vou entrar em mais pormenores, porque há sempre quem não tenha lido ou visto, e para quem não sabe nada.. bem que somos apanhados desprevenidos. como o filme foi o meu primeiro contacto inesquecível e tão marcante, não senti o mesmo com o livro. ainda assim gostei e emocionei-me. teve algumas partes mais aborrecidas, para mim.. mas estarei sempre condicionada por já conhecer. foi agridoce voltar a reencontrar Emma & Dexter, quero rever o filme, mas ainda não tive coragem. 🧡 esta edição antiga encontrei-a na livraria @heroiscomcapa e não pude resistir, veio comigo.

‘Whatever happens tomorrow, we had today; and I’ll always remember it’ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ Dexter and Emma meet by chance at their graduation, but where will they be on this day every year after ? Both this book and the series left me absolutely speechless and obsessed. The writing and the story itself is so beautifully heartbreaking, and Dex and Em have secured their place in my heart now 🥺 We weave in and out of their lives, missing out on key moments but always checking in on them on St Swithin’s Day, watching their lives and environments change, and watching them grow as people. Dexter’s arc in this is incredible and most of all, realistic. These characters feel like real people and made me even more invested in their stories. I would def recommend this to fans of Normal People (or anyone who likes devastatingly amazing books)

One Day By: David Nicholls ▫️ genre: contemporary fiction ▫️ read if you like: friends to lovers, heart-breaking stories, slow burn ▫️ TW: addiction, death Thoughts 💭 This story was sooo heartbreaking through out! One day is written in a way that we only see one day of these character lives for about 20ish years. Honestly speaking, this aspect was something I wasn’t the biggest fan. I felt like I would get invested in their life at that point but because it was only one day we wouldn’t see the rest of the story. Then You have to fill in the blanks based on things that characters say or do in the next year. I was already expecting the ending to be sad but the ending was sooo sad. Definitely would’ve been worse if I didn’t already know it was so heartbreaking and was expecting it. Dexter pissed me off some times and so did Emma but *SPOILER* at the end when he lost her I was done😭😭😭. I need therapy cause this ending broke me!! Definitely a book you think about for days after reading. I watched the series on Netflix and the movie right after because I obviously enjoy pain!! One Day by @davidnichollswriter ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ After witnessing the overwhelming reactions and hype over the Netflix series.. I caved in and decided to start by reading the book first before watching the series.. and honestly? Best thing I did! This novel was beautifully written despite the heart wrenching storyline. I did find the storyline had similarities to the movie Love, Rosie (Where the Rainbow ends by @official_ceceliaahern) without the devastating ending. The storyline is about Dexter & Emma who met in Edinburgh on the night of their university graduation party on 15 July 1988. The novel takes you through their journey in the next 20 years on 15 July from 1988 to 2007, includes their ups & downs and trying to navigate their friendship despite both having undeniable attraction to one another. This is your typical right person wrong time.. but nothing can prepare you for the ending. I have now watched the series - which was surprisingly closely adapted to the book. It’s been a few days.. and I’m still feeling the emptiness and heart ache 🥺💔 It did leave me feeling very nostalgic for the late 90s and early 2000s! When life and things used to be soo simple. I have to say one of my favourite novels and such a classic and will definitely be re-reading it again in the future. Now.. Right from the minute I saw you dancing to the minute I kissed you bye when I left for work, I have never loved someone so much as I did to you. It took me some time to realize that, but I did, and I want you to know that too. People always tell me that a significant time has passed and I should think of settling down again with someone nice, but how do I settle with someone nice when I've tasted what’s best for me? I wish they’d understand that I don’t want to move on from the memories I have of you because those are the things that push me every morning to get up and go to work because I promised you that I'd do good for us. It’s so hard to be in love with someone who is not here because you always want to tell them something, and then reality hits you that the only person you want to go back to is no longer here because God loved them more. I have been trying to stay positive, do good, and be good, but some nights I just want to let loose, and on those nights I miss you and Mom, and I make myself believe that you and I are having a great time together and taking care of each other, which brings me some sort of peace. 📅 Days of our lives 📅 Instagram was so nearly bang on message with the date on its calendar icon. But what's a couple of days between friends? 😉 Like so many others, I have recently been devouring Netflix's new adaptation of David Nicholls' 'One Day'. Being a big fan of the book and also the 2011 film (I now believe I may be the one and only fan 🙈) and there being so much hype around this series, I, of course, had to check it out. I have to say it hasn't disappointed, and I can definitely see how it is truer to the novel, and the characterisation is so spot on. Dex and Em are exasperating and endearing in equal measure, and I think that's why we love them. They are real people, like the rest of us 😃 As I know the ending, there is no risk of spoilers, though I have been told this won't necessarily make me immune, so I am bracing myself for an emotional conclusion 🥺 In the meantime, I will leave these you with these words by Philip Larkin, which open both the book and the series. If you’ve watched this recent @netflixuk show and if you have a heart, I’m sure it’s currently broken into pieces. 🥲 I watched it a few days back and while the show does a brilliant job is showcasing the complexities of a long-term relationships, the loneliness of addiction and how it tries to touch upon GRIEF in different types of relationships and situations, it’s the ENDING, that you don’t see coming AT ALL!! You’re inspired by the honesty that Ema & Dexter have with each other. You’re touched by the way they care and look out for each other, you’re feeling as lost and as anxious as they are when they aren’t in each other lives and you’re ecstatic when they choose to be with each other as if they are a part of your reality in someway, but what really makes you feel like time just stopped is when everything “seems” to be going fine in their story and in one single second the WHOLE STORY CHANGES. You feel the gut-wrenching sense of sadness when @leowoodall tries to emote grief not through his words but just with his constantly teary eyes and loud wails (WHERE DID THE ACTOR FIND ALL THAT GRIEF FROM???? 🥲). It’s a beautifully sad story. “You can live your whole life not realizing that what you’re looking for is right in front of you.” After binging this adaptation on Netflix and consequently crying my eyes out for a week straight over Leo Woodall’s performance, I had to go pick up the book to torture myself some more and it did not disappoint. 😅💛 Both the book and the show were so well done, one of the best adaptations I’ve seen in a while! Dexter and Emma’s story over twenty years of friendship was so beautiful; it really highlights the ups and downs of being human and making mistakes. The writing was wholesome and real and raw which made that ending hit so much harder than I imagined, even having watched it before reading it. 😭 It’s been a long time since a novel and/or show has made me really think about life and how short it is but One Day has definitely hit that spot for me. I’ll be making a conscious effort to appreciate every day from now on and telling those important to me that I love them whenever I can. Have you seen or read One Day? One Day (2024) 💔 Sinceramente NO estoy bien después de ver esto. Es una miniserie basada en el libro de David Nicholls del mismo nombre, que ya tiene una adaptación al cine en la mitiquísima peli de Anne Hathaway de 2011. Sabiendo eso ya tenía muchísimas ganas de ver la serie y uf!!! me ha encantado. 14 capítulos de apenas 30 min y tan preciosos que ni te enteras y ya están acabando!! Nos cuenta la historia de Dexter y Emma, que se conocen en su graduación universitaria, y la vida les une y les separa durante 20 años. Tengo que admitir que sí que creo que me sigue gustando más la película, en la serie generalmente los veo en una relacion bastante más descompensada... (pero no he leído el libro, lo mismo justo esa es la intención). Me han encantado los actores que hacen de Dex y de Emma, les dan muchísima personalidad y hacen un papelón, sobre todo él. Trying to get someone to watch “One Day” who is not into romance? ❤️ Don’t worry, I’ve got you! 💃🏻 While I am wholeheartedly Team Emma+Dex I loved so much about this @netflixanz series that wasn’t about their love story. Mostly - personal growth! All the major and minor characters figure themselves out along the way in ways that are reflective of each other. They learn that wealth and success is not always what it says on the tin. That life is short so you’d better spend it in ways that count. That you are not for everyone but your relationship with yourself is the most important thing… …and that life in the 80’s and 90’s before mobile phones was pretty good craic.
