Serves 4: Cut 500g chicken into bite size chunks and in a bowl 🥣 mix well with: 2 tbsps Garam Masala. 1 tsp tumeric. 1/2 tsp chilli powder. Fry 1 diced onion 🧅 2 tsps of minced garlic 🧄 1 tsp of minced ginger 🫚 Add the chicken 🐔 fry for 5 minutes. Add 100g of dried red lentils. 400g of chicken stock. 400g of chopped tomatoes 🍅 6 tbsps of pineapple 🍍 juice. Add 2 bays leaves 🍃 Pop a lid on and simmer on a low heat for 40 minutes to allow the lentils to break down. Stir occasionally. Hence I mentioned the Parsi name MND, though I doubt if it would make a difference to non-Parsis. Calling it ‘dhansak’ makes it more relatable. The kevab is made with soya but the spicing will lull you into believing it’s mutton. The masala is the same as used by owner, Annie Bafna’s, mum. Remarkable. The dar (sic) is mildly spicy. Found myself with a sudden fancy for a curry on leaving work last night, which created a bit of a dilemma. Since it’s almost on the doorstep, and was really good when we first tried it, our go to for a long time was Undal on Abbeydale Road. Was a little put off when they expanded their menu to burgers and Mexican food as well, which led us to finding the excellent Sufians, so (maybe unfairly) we didn’t look back for a while. With Sufians now sadly gone and a couple of disappointments elsewhere, we decided to revisit Undal. Seekh kebab starter was really good. Often find them a bit bland but these had a really nice kick. My usual is a dhansak with garlic rice, opted for the chicken. Wasn’t bad by any means, but i’ve had better. Keema naan not pictured was good, the ‘pot’ of mango chutney would have struggled to fill a large thimble. The ‘40 minutes - 1 hour’ for delivery also ended up being nearer 90 minutes. I’m happy to give them the benefit of the doubt on that, may have been really busy and delivery was always speedy in the past. Dhansak with a green twist! 💚🤗 Adding chickpeas and kale to this traditional Indian dish takes it to the next level... Ingredients 💚1 tbsp vegetable oil 💚 1 Red Onion, sliced 💚 350g potatoes, diced 💚 1 aubergine, diced 💚 1 tbsp medium curry powder 💚 400g can chick peas, drained and rinsed 💚 200g red split lentils 💚 800ml vegetable stock 💚 250g bag Kale, thick stalks removed 💚 Plain vegan yogurt alternative to serve Instructions 💚 Heat the oil in a large saucepan and fry the onion for 3 minutes, add the potatoes and aubergine and fry for a further 2-3 minutes. 💚 Stir in the curry powder then stir in the chick peas and lentils. Add the stock, bring to the boil and cook, covered for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. 💚 Add the Kale and cook for a further 5 minutes.
