Scientists have recently discovered the world's earliest fossil forest in the high sandstone cliffs along the coast of Devon and Somerset in the UK, dating back around 390 million years. The fossilised trees, known as Calamophyton, resemble palm trees but are an early prototype of modern trees. They had hollow trunks with woody supporting strands, lacked leaves, and were much shorter than modern trees, standing 2-4 meters tall. This fossil forest provides important insights into the early evolution of forests and how they transformed the landscape during the Devonian period, when life was first expanding onto land. We went for a dog walk up to the hill overlooking Lulworth Cove a few days ago, had a picnic and watched the sunset. It was so beautiful and crisp, you could see Portland in the distance. The beaches with the most beautiful water in Greece and the Geopark with its petrified palm forest and many marine fossils. There are corals, sea urchins, shells, moss animals, worms and arthropods, all along the road to the sandy beach. At the central buildings of the Park you will find a map and presentation boards, where you can find fossils in Greek and English with pictures. According to the park's website, the area is introduced in the summer with free guided tours. Hurry up, don't miss it, because the fossils is literally under our feet (it is not fenced) and the prepared stone forest is being eroded by the sea, because under the fossil layer there is a layer of soft sand, which is constantly washed by the waves. Inseveral times there are seawater in the trunks, as the sea waves in the place of the washed-out layer. The water of the beaches has a beautiful color and more transparent then elswhere. There is a lot of cargo ship traffic not far in front of the coast (we are on the southern tip of the Peloponnese), and one day a current full of plastic pollution arrived... although a few handfuls of plastic bags (and who knows what) we collected it, but it was only a small part of the trash in the water... the next day the current changed direction and the plastics floating in the water drifted to the other side... Siess, le ne maradj róla, mivel a látványosság szó szerint a lábunk alatt van (nincs elkerítve) és a kipreparált kőerdőt erodálja a tenger, mivel a fosszíliás réteg alatt puha homokos réteg található, amit folyamatosan mos ki alóla a hullámzás.

Days 41 to 42 - GREECE 🇬🇷- Monemvasia and the petrified forest Journey 🚐 The drive from Nemea to Monemvasia was 2hrs45. From Monemvasia we drove 1hr30 to the petrified forest in the Southern tip of the right hand Lakonian finger of the Peloponnese. Highlights ⭐️ Monemvasia is impressive just from the approaching road. A huge lump of rock jutting from the sea, connected to the mainland by a small causeway. Its’ sole town is located around the back of the rock, and not visible from the opposite village of Gefira. We had a lovely meal in one of the many seafront tavernas and decided to save exploring Monemvasia until daylight. The next morning we parked at the carpark just over the causeway and walked along the coastal road for 30 minutes to reach the town. The town was a wonderful tangle of tiny cobbled streets and mostly abandoned houses that cling to the hillside. There are only 20 permanent residents of Monemvasia, so lots of the buildings are now accommodation. We weaved our way through the many churches to the vast wall surrounding the town. We passed through the gate and wandered to the pretty copper topped lighthouse at the end. As it was getting hot we decided not to tackle the steps up to the fortressed castle above the town. From here we drove to the petrified forest. You wander over a sea of fossilised shells, to reach stone-like tree trunks jutting from the rock. The sea around here is a beautiful bright turquoise. A flood hit the area and the Forest was submerged in water. The roots were covered by sediment, sand and other materials. Lulworth Cove to Flowers Barrow: 7 miles Back down to the Jurassic Coast for a lovely autumn day in Dorset. Onto the Lulworth ranges (check opening times unless you want to be staring down the barrel of a tank) to meet up with Flowers Barrow again. This time, there was no sea fret, and I was blown away with the size of the Iron Age hillfort. Hidden in the clouds last time and approaching from the other direction, it wasn't so obvious. AUCKLAND ARCHITECTURE | A palette of Pohutukawa trees and scoria (basaltic lava with a frothy texture) make for a stunning landscape on the foreshore walk from Takapuna to Milford Beach. I love seeing the way landscape designers and architects respond to this 'genius loci' (spirit of place). The walls are works of art. Start this walk at Takapuna Beach Boat Ramp so that you can finish at the lovely Takapuna Beach Cafe. Takapuna Beach is home to an ancient fossilised forest (pic 10). The cylindrical moulds were formed approximately 200,000 years ago during the eruption of the Lake Pupuke volcano, when the sea level was much lower than it is today. Lava flows engulfed the forest and encased their lower trunks. The trees themselves were incinerated by the hot lava but the shape of their trunks and fallen branches were preserved as the lava cooled and solidified around them. Takapuna Reef Fossil Forest is one of the best examples in the world of a lava-preserved fossil forest. 1. Pohutakawa trees and dry stone walls, created from scoria on site (yep, solidified lava, very cool) 2. Pohutukawa trees live for 1,000 years, so it is wonderful to see the way that the architect has designed around these beauties 4. Maidenhair Vine (Muehlenbeckia complexa), a plant native to New Zealand, commonly known as pohuehue, is a beautiful textural contrast to the scoria boulders Pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa) is also known as New Zealand Christmas Tree. They are one of my favourite trees because of their beautiful form, wide canopy, sculptural trunk shapes and stunning red flowers. Pohutukawas line the foreshores of Auckland, and by Christmas, they will ablaze with colour. They are designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These places are known as world heritage sites where you can swim🏊♂️. The establishment of national parks not only protects fossil forests but also the environment in which they are found. Protecting fossil wood deposits allows scientists to study the fossils while also providing the public with a natural area that can serve as a place of solitude and learning. We have already mentioned Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona but there are many more including the Bantak Petrified Forest Park in Thailand, Jaramillo Petrified Forest National Park in Argentina, Lesvos Petrified Forest in Greece, and also Merangin Paleobotany Park which included the Merangin Geopark area, Indonesia! In the Merangin Geopark, fossil wood (Araucarioxylon) was found that came from the Paleozoic Period, making it older than the age of the dinosaurs! Some fossil wood sites are in danger of being depleted or even destroyed due to sales of fossil wood around the world underscoring the urgent need to protect these sites and preserve the important scientific information that is waiting to be discovered. #fossilforest #paleobotany

Strange hollows, shallow dishes on the top of a limestone bed in a falling tide seascape coastline. Beyond ancient depressions left by giant vascular plants, clubmoss cousins, rooting in shallow lime mud in a once tropical coastline, form green weed pools in white rock. So regular in size and well spaced are the tide stranded ponds that I start to doubt my first thoughts that these are the traces left by countless tree-like beings some 320 (ish) million years old. A lime kiln on the headland says these rocks were certainly cut up and used by man once upon a time, their true story is much older. The limestones here are full of shallow water tropical colonial coral fossils, thick noodles of creamy white, rock hard macaroni cheese.
