📚 Book Review: 📖 42 ➡️ The Only One Left - Riley Sager OMG what a book! If you have this on your TBR pick it up now!! I normally put a brief synopsis at this point but I think it’s best to go into this book knowing nothing about it. I have got the blurb on my other post about this book on my grid if you want some clues, but I don’t recommend reading it (I don’t think I have even read it yet, I just copy and paste 😂) I thought from the title and cover alone it would be like And Then There Were None. It wasn’t. Riley Sager sucks you in at the beginning and though it is somewhat of a slow burn initially it is completely worth it. Also I thought when I opened it and saw the tiny font that I wouldn’t struggle but I honestly read it quicker than some books with larger font! The book was atmospheric and the detailing around it had me feeling much of what the main characters felt. This kept me gripped and by the end my eyes were bulging and my brain was buzzing by everything that had happened. I was completely clueless throughout this despite my many guesses! I have been on a re-read kick lately…haha. For book 19 of 2024 I re-read Second Hand Curses by Drew Hayes. This was the first book I ever read by Mr. Hayes, who is one of my favorite authors now. The Bastard Champions are a trio traveling the world helping people. They are on a mission to find the Blue Fairy-one of the most powerful fairies in their world. Each member of the trio has their own reasons for wanting to track down the Blue Fairy. Their search for her is told through different adventures/cases in the fairytale world. I absolutely LOVE this book! It has a little bit of everything…magic, fairytales, humor, adventure, etc. I especially love how each chapter has the trio helping fairytale characters like Cinderella and Pinocchio. Highly, highly recommend this one. If you’re in Vegas and looking for painters, I can’t recommend @certapro_summerlinlasvegas enough. So let me be transparent- I had 4 different companies come and give us a bid. Certapro was the most expensive by $500. Now why we went w them, would recommend them, and can’t wait to do our next project with them. No contractor in our state is allowed to charge a customer more than 10% or $1000.00 which ever is the cheapest, for their down payment. We knew this. The other 3 companies asked for $3000.00-$3500.00 down for a job that was $4000.00ish. Our soffits and eaves had peeling/cracked paint and the other companies all promised that it would never happen and shouldn’t have happened. Certpro never promised that, explained how the wood could have issues, then told us what they recommended. They came back out on a Saturday to answer questions my husband had. (I met with them on a weekday, while he was at work.) They helped bring my vision to life, by helping me choose the colors, getting paperwork ready for HOA, etc. The owners are a husband and wife team. And they really make the entire experience effortless from start to finish. The few things that were pointed out, were all fixed. It really was a pleasure dealing with a company that cared as much about my home as they do their own. In Safe Haven, we meet two strong, amazing women; Fina, who arrives in Australia, seeking asylum and Lucky, a special investigator who arrives to uncover the truth about a security officers death at the detention centre. It was heart warming reading about Fina’s time in the Hastings community, helping others and building new relationships. Her time in the detention centre was admirable as well as stressful. Her emails from Magnus, comforting. Her past, painful to read about. She really was a remarkable woman. I wasn’t expecting so much to unravel while Lucky investigated the death of the security officer. There were many times I held my breath, or paused to regroup because it was so intense. A good, edge of your seat, can’t turn the pages quick enough, intense. I’ve never read a book that I could visualise so vividly. This story was filled with a lot of mystery, questions, theories, thoughts, it really had me thinking and guessing. It also had me thinking a lot about Australia’s detention systems and policies. I cannot imagine the amount of research that went into this book. Chandran is a unique storyteller, her words are powerful and beautiful at the same time. I am in total awe of another incredible, thought provoking book by this amazing author. Highly recommend, definitely one of the best reads of 2024! I don't typically gravitate to unrealistic plots but loved this book. Habeck's writing feels simple but is smooth and pulls feelings I didn't even know I had! Shark Heart is a story about love, longing, loneliness, the complexities of relationships, and of human to animal mutations. ✨️Malo veš o zvezdah (Klara Eva Kukovičič)✨️ Še enkrat, najlepša hvala @klara.evaa za izvod knjige! 🤍💫 Nisem vajena brat, kaj šele pisat karkoli nepravnega v slovenščini, so bear with me. 😅 Malo veš o zvezdah je prva knjiga (in vsekakor upam, da ne zadnja) avtorice Klare Eve Kukovičič. Gre za zbirko kratkih zgodb, ki se dotikajo vsakodnevnih tem, vendar pa se nanašajo predvsem na odnose, ki jih pletemo z ljudmi okoli sebe, bodisi so to romantični, družinski ali platonični odnosi. Glede na tematiko me je zbirka zelo spominjala na zbirko esejev Everything I Know About Love, avtorice Dolly Alderton, ki zame velja za »must-read« vsake mlade punce in lahko s gotovostjo rečem, da se je tudi Malo veš o zvezdah pridružila na ta seznam. Ne le, da je tematika podobna, tudi moj odziv na knjigo je bil podoben, saj sem v avtorici našla t.i. »starejšo sestro, ki je nikoli nisem imela« - sem namreč mnenja, da se iz takšnih knjig največ naučimo o sebi, o ljudeh okoli nas ter o odnosih s le-temi. Kljub temu, da je napisana v slovenščini, v kateri nisem vajena brati sem knjigo dobesedno pogoltnila, hkrati pa sem jo na koncu želela spet začeti od znova, saj je stil pisanja res izjemen (med drugim z ogromno luštnimi citati😉). I don’t want to give away too much as I really want you to experience what I just have, first hand. In Safe Haven, we meet two strong, amazing women; Fina, who arrives in Australia, seeking asylum and Lucky, a special investigator who arrives to uncover the truth about a security officers death at the detention centre. It was heart warming reading about Fina’s time in the Hastings community, helping others and building new relationships. Her time in the detention centre was admirable as well as stressful. Her emails from Magnus, comforting. Her past, painful to read about. She really was a remarkable woman. I wasn’t expecting so much to unravel while Lucky investigated the death of the security officer. There were many times I held my breath, or paused to regroup because it was so intense. A good, edge of your seat, can’t turn the pages quick enough, intense. I’ve never read a book that I could visualise so vividly. This story was filled with a lot of mystery, questions, theories, thoughts, it really had me thinking and guessing. It also had me thinking a lot about Australia’s detention systems and policies. I cannot imagine the amount of research that went into this book. Shankari is an amazing and unique storyteller, her words are powerful and beautiful at the same time. I am in total awe of another incredible, thought provoking book by this amazing author. Highly recommend, definitely one of the best reads of 2024!
