Daughter of Mine By: Megan Miranda 🌟 🌟 🌟. 5 I am a huge fan of Megan Miranda, and when I heard she was coming out with a new book, I jumped on it. I did like this book, but at the same time, I felt it was lacking in something. Sometimes Megan Miranda has lots of characters and kind of forgets to fully develop them and I think that's what happened here as well. I did like our main character but at times felt she didn't stand up for herself enough, and that took away from the bad ass heroine I wanted her to be. I also thought we would get a better in-depth story on her mother leaving, and I feel it was more sprinkled in than anything. The writing as always was engaging, and I read it within a matter of hours. I did like the twist at the end, I will definitely pick up more from the author as I always do, but I think I won't have such high expectations. I recommend you read it. I'd you want to a quick thriller to wait out for before the summer blockbuster reads come out. Hazel Sharp knows how to pick up and make the best Out of a shitry situation. She's been doing it for as long as she can remember so when her father dies and she goes back to her hometown to her one loving brother and the other who hates her and her ex right next door she breathes and decides to deal with it. Then she finds out she's left the house and with it all the secrets it holds inside of it. Just when you think things can't get worse, a car is found behind her house and it seems to be the one Hazels mom left in years prior never to be seen again. They said her mother was a criminal and left in the middle of the night but what if that's not true. What if it's all a lie. She's going to have to investigate herself if she wants the truth this time but it might mean risking her family and all she knew and her very life in the process. About 80 pages in is when things picked up for me and it's been fantastic. The whole mystery of the cars and the way Hazel got invested in solving the mystery and finding out what happened to her friend really hooked me in. I could feel the tension between Hazel and her brothers and Hazel's desperation to find answers to questions that had long been buried. I loved the atmospheric setting of Mirror Lake, the fictional small town set in the mountains of North Carolina, which was going through a drought. Finally, the build up to that ending - I couldn't put it down. 𝙁𝙪𝙣 𝙁𝙖𝙘𝙩: Mirror Lake was inspired by the real-life town of Lake Lure, NC. Book review: I rarely miss snatching up a Megan Miranda book to read right away. This time, I grabbed Daughter of Mine the next day and savored it over a few weeks. Had life been different, I’d certainly have read it in a weekend. It wasn’t as fast-paced as the last one, a little slow burn at the beginning like some of her others, building scene and characters, but it still kept me turning pages and wanting to come back to it in hopes of helping solve the mystery of Hazel’s adopted father’s two dead or missing wives (one of them her mom). The sibling rivalry was fierce, her two brothers being small town cops just like her dad. She hadn’t wanted to come back, but their father had died and left her the family home. Her renovation business comes in handy in solving the mystery, and she proves though not blood, crime solving doesn’t fall far from the tree. As was noted by Miranda, “daughters are different.” (In other words, they need to solve the mystery!) I wished for a little more with certain characters, they seemed to only be used when necessary. I won’t say exactly as not to leave spoilers. Miranda does a good job getting all the plot points lined up and accurate, and casting doubt on every character - leaving a lot of red herrings and suspicion. That’s good, but sometimes it creates lack of connection between characters and as such between characters and readers. There weren’t as many twists in this one, in my opinion, but focused more on the mystery solving and the final reveal pulling things together. But I love that she focuses, and here especially, on her lead woman character being kick ass all on her own. Hazel certainly is. She basically took on a whole town of ‘good ole boys’ looking after their own. And, also as usual, finds some redemption for herself. A buzzy new thriller for you to pick up Thank you @marysueruccibooks for my #gifted copy! When Hazel’s dad dies, she goes back to her small hometown for his funeral. It happens to coincide with a drought that leaves the local lake with low water levels that are revealing secrets. As cars start to get pulled out of the lake, Hazel realizes her past might not be what she thought it was. This is an atmospheric, fast-paced thriller that is sure to keep you engaged. I flew through it. While it’s not my favorite of Miranda’s books, this is a total solid book that I will be recommending to lots of my friends (including you all 🫶🏻). I have to say, Miranda did a great job of building suspense and making this one a touch scary. I loved how high stakes the plot felt, and I definetely was a bit creeped out. Parts of the ending I guessed, but I don’t think most people will. This is definitely a twisty book that I think would make a great summer, beach read! ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #litbylillireviews

daughter of mine | megan miranda i’ve been a big fan of megan miranda for a really long time. and this one is definitely up there as one of my favorites. daughter of mine was definitely different from other thrillers i’ve read and i loved that. to me, it was slow paced but not so slow that you weren’t 100% invested. i mean i binge read this in like 24 hours. it was suspenseful + intriguing. and i loved the atmospheric setting. you could just imagine yourself there on the lake with the characters. and i also didn’t see that ending coming! 🙌🏻 highly recommend. 4.5⭐️

Detective Perry Holt left the family home to Hazel, which set off her two brothers, Caden and Gage. Shortly after Hazel comes home, a car is pulled from the lake. Many things start to unravel in this gripping thriller. The small town where you would think there would be no secrets always seems to have a surprising secret, and there is going to be a reckoning. “Daughter of Mine” by @meganlmiranda was an atmospheric and uneasy thriller about the very human threats in the mountains. I enjoyed the world building of another somewhat insular community, where Hazel and her mother were the disturbance that eventually settled, at least for most people. I enjoyed the mix of mystery surrounding the disappearance of Hazel’s mother in the past and the ghosts of the past literally coming closer to the surface as a drought lowers the lake. Mirror Lake at times felt like its own character as Hazel literally went around and around in her search for answers. Hazel is simultaneously the outsider and the middle child at times, caught between her brothers Gage and Caden. I enjoyed all the different relationships at play in this story and the tangled web they weave. I always enjoy a great thriller by @meganlmiranda and this one kept me on the edge of my seat until the last two chapters. A daughter whose mother finds a man, takes what he has and leaves, but usually brings her with. So when Hazels mother leaves, but doesn’t take her with, she was angry. They had settled into a town in the mountains in North Carolina by lakes, and married a cop, who had two sons. Life was great, and then all of a sudden one day, her mom never came home. The bank accounts were drained, suitcases gone, car missing, and a note left, but Hazels mom didn’t come back for her. Years later during a drought, a car is found in the lake. And then another. The town is trying to solve a mystery, but podcasters show up trying to solve it themselves. Hazel then questions everything, and everyone. Her friend, sister in law, then goes missing. And she knows something is not right. Megan Miranda does such a wonderful job keeping the suspense, the questions going through your brain, and the thrills throughout her books. Daughter of Mine was such a surprise for me, as I went into this book relatively blind. It was so well written. Incredibly atmospheric. Loved the way there was a drought up until a point when the rain came pouring down. So fitting for the story. There were moments that the writing seemed lyrical, which you never see in thrillers normally! The way the story builds was perfection. A slow burn. I had no clue what the plot twists would be, and I was literally shook at the ending. Daughter of Mine follows the story of Hazel who inherits her childhood home in Mirror Lake when her father passes away. At this time, Mirror Lake is suffering from a long drought that is dropping the water levels in the lake. A discovery is made in the lake that sets off a course of shocking events that change Hazel and several others lives forever! I very much recommend adding this book to your TBR! It is during a drought and as the lake lowers, the police are finding cars buried at the bottom of the lake, long forgotten. Are these cars connected? And in a small town where everyone is a cop, or related to a cop, will anyone take it seriously? A definitely slow burn. I at times questioned if Hazel was making a mountain out of a mole hill and taking small things way further than needed. I enjoyed the characters and the complex relationships between family and between small town inhabitants. If you’re looking for a small town, slow burn thriller I definitely recommend. The book is separate by a POV of one of the survivors, Cassidy, and flashbacks from each survivors account of “the night” - surprisingly it was super easy to follow each chapter. The ending was a complete surprise to me.
