Following the success of our “Second Chance Book Club,” we are partnering once again with our friends at Half Moon Rondout Café for another book club! This year, we’re exploring forgotten treasures! Every First Saturday of the Month at 2pm, we invite you to join us at 36 Broadway in the Rondout for coffee, donuts, and conversation. For each date, we’ve chosen a title that is on the road to being left in weeds but one which we believe people should experience before it is forgotten. Together, we’ll revisit some of these books and decide if its time has come and gone, or if it’s destined for a word-of-mouth revival. Either way, we’ll all enjoy delicious baked goods and coffee, so there’s nothing to lose. April's book is The Expendable Man by Dorothy B. Hughes. #ForgottenFavoritesBookClub #HalfMoonRondoutCafe #TheExpendableMan #DorothyHughes #KingstonNY #BookLovers #BookClub

IN A LONELY PLACE by Dorothy B. Hughes: Oof, this was a dark story! I saw the movie last year and loved it. The book felt different (I kept wondering if they had changed the ending) - which was a good thing for a mystery! In a Lonely Place follows Dix Steele, a listless veteran with a disdain for work and a hatred of women, as he rambles around Los Angeles in 1947. The city has been terrorized by a strangler targeting women and Dix has an obsessive interest in the police handling of the case. I loved the noir atmosphere. The omniscient third person narration simultaneously told me more than I wanted to know and left enough unsaid to keep me wondering.

Reading in L.A. Vol. 3: What happens when I have a great photo in mind but the book doesn’t land? I usually leave them out. The photo on the left was taken a year ago, and I took the one on the right over the weekend. Both books are classics of L.A. noir and look fantastic up against the backdrop of my sister’s dining room window. These novels are clearly wonderful; both dive into the crevices of Los Angeles’ past and expose the dark and terrifying world through the lens of those who chase and commit terrible crimes. Chandler and Hughes are colorful and evocative writers. I stopped to marvel at certain sentences and loved seeing references to places I’ve now seen in person. My problem is there’s an inherent misogyny to this genre — maybe it was the time, maybe the violence any such story will feature — that I can’t get past. So while I’m glad to traveled to Chandler and Hughes’s dark version of L.A., I don’t think I’ll be back anytime soon. #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #books #booksbooksbooks #booksbooksandmorebooks #booksbooksbooks📚 #currentlyreading #reading #bookreview #bookrecommendations #booksrecommendation #books #booklover #booklovers #booksofinstagram #booksofinsta #booksofig #booksta #losangeles #thebigsleep #bigsleep #raymondchandler #dorothyhughes

In a Lonely Place (1947/2017) 224 pages #Novel by Dorothy B. Hughes Published by @nyrbooks A classic California noir with a feminist twist, this prescient 1947 novel exposed misogyny in post-World War II American society, making it far ahead of its time. Los Angeles in the late 1940s is a city of promise and prosperity, but not for former fighter pilot Dix Steele. To his mind nothing has come close to matching “that feeling of power and exhilaration and freedom that came with loneness in the sky.” He prowls the foggy city night—bus stops and stretches of darkened beaches and movie houses just emptying out—seeking solitary young women. His funds are running out and his frustrations are growing. Where is the good life he was promised? Why does he always get a raw deal? Then he hooks up with his old Air Corps buddy Brub, now working for the LAPD, who just happens to be on the trail of the strangler who’s been terrorizing the women of the city for months... Written with controlled elegance, Dorothy B. Hughes’s tense novel is at once an early indictment of a truly toxic masculinity and a twisty page-turner with a surprisingly feminist resolution. A classic of golden age noir, In a Lonely Place also inspired Nicholas Ray’s 1950 film of the same name, starring Humphrey Bogart. #nyrb #noir #lapd #classic #book #DorothyHughes #feminist #toxicmasculinity #strangler #bookrecommendations

THE EXPENDABLE MAN by Dorothy B. Hughes WHAT’S IN THE BOX: A very noir thriller set in sweltering 1960s Phoenix. Race, injustice, quickening pulses. WARNING/AVERTISSEMENT: A rich white lawyer comes to the rescue. The worst and most pitiable people are abortionists. ESSENTIAL BIT: “He knew better than to pick up a hitchhiker on the road; he’d known it long before the newspapers and script writers had implanted the danger in the public mind. Most assuredly he would not pick up anyone in this strange, deserted land. But he reduced speed when he approached the shadow, the automatic anxiety reaction that a person might step in front of the oncoming car. He passed the hitchhiker before he was actually aware of the shape and form; only after he had passed did he realize that this was a young girl. From the glimpse, a teen-age girl.” PEOPLE WHO BUY THIS ALSO LIKED: James Cain, hamburger stands, pools of light from sodium lamps, escalating tension, motel room deadbolts, pay phones, swimming pools, cacti EXPANSION PACK: The handsome new Scottsdale police headquarters

2021 Favourite Author: Dorothy Hughes Standout Book: Ride the Pink Horse (Crime Noir) Once upon a time, when two of my favourite haunts were the local library and the used books market, I came upon a dusty, partly torn copy of Ride the Pink Horse by Dorothy Hughes. I was hooked by the deeply disquieting prose but could not find any of her other books. Years went by, and I forgot the author's name. It wasn't until earlier this year when I came across an article on the author that reminded me of that long-lost book. I finally read all of her fictional works this year, and what a ride it has been! Sailor, a hard-boiled hoodlum, is a flawed hero trying to get his money from a corrupt backstabbing boss, the Sen, aka the Senator from Chicago. The book is set on the backdrop of the colourful fiesta in the arid and gloomy New Mexico that seems strange to the city born and bred Sailor.  Above the fiesta's colourful merry-go-round hangs the palpable sense of dread and inevitable tragedy.  The final frantic denouement where the unsettling feeling that has been growing through the book reaches crescendo is evocatively depicted in the wild dance symbolizing the end of the fiesta.  This is a tautly paced crime noir that is equal parts a gripping psychological thriller and hypnotic inner monologue of Sailor. This is one of her exquisite masterpieces. I am besotted with her style and talent of a highly underappreciated author who needs to be read more. #womenwriters #crimenoir #crimewriter #psycholigicalthriller #writersaboutwriters #dorothyhughes #goldenageofcrimefiction #ridethepinkhorse #vinayabhagat

So I just read In A Lonely Place by Dorothy B. Hughes. Dix Steele is out of the army. He's hit L.A. trying to write a crime novel. He reaccquaints himself with an old army buddy, who after the war turned police detective. Meanwhile, there is a serial killer on the loose in the city. It was a novel of many stops and starts for me. Despite its short length. I found it hard to get into. I wonder how much of that was down to the prose, that is unfussy, if not verging on terse. I got invested for a while but then found it hard to focus. It ebbed and flowed with my attention to it, and I'm not sure if the issue was the style of writing or my attention, but in the end it amounted to the same in way of reading experience. With that said, when I was into it, there was quite mood to the novel. That certain post-WW2, hard-up mood. The kind that feels like Bogart in a battered fedora, looks like a sultry dame in a cocktail dress, sounds like a sole muted trumpet, and smells like cheap whiskey and unfiltered cigarettes. It's a very cold novel. Noir isn't exactly known for its cosiness, and this is icy and rather cynical. And I'm not sure whether or not that is a point of criticism. It is what it is. And if one is up for some noir, this is nice place, albeit a lonely one, to start. ❤❤❤🖤🖤

#elreductecatalà #bookstagramcatalunya #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #dorothyhughes #desert #cuadepalla #lacuadepalla #hardboiled #novelanegra #newmexico #santafe #zozobra #llegeixoicomparteixo #lecturescompartides #llegirmagrada #llibres #literatura #llegeixoicomparteixo

These women make history and these women change the future for the better. Feminism isn’t about man hating, it’s about choice. True Feminism allows a woman to be whomever she wants. Ok, it isn't pens or inks, but I have to pause our regular programming to recognize my local librarians: Shout out to the Beacon Hill branch of the Seattle Public Library for this awesome lineup. The library isn't open for browsing, but you can get a surprise 'grab bag' of books selected by the librarians. Here's what I got today: Kazuo Ishiguro's new novel about companiom androids, historical fiction about the Dominican Republic in the 1960s, classic woman-authored noir, and Master & Margarita in a new translation - absolutely one of my favorite books EVER. (So far.) What a great haul! THANKS, LIBRARIANS! Public Service Announcement: If you haven't read Master & Margarita, PLEASE do so as soon as practicable. Seriously though. @seattlepubliclibrary #lovemylibrarians #librarylove #booklove #literature #firstlove #readmore #masterandmargarita #bulgakov #kazuoishiguro #klaraandthesun #dorothyhughes #inalonelyplace #angiecruz #dominicana #backtoourregularprogramming

i read this book for my film noir class a few weeks back and my review is that the writing is overall meh, but the subversion of a lot of stereotypes of femme fatales, “the good girl” figure and toxic masculinity is incredible. dorothy hughes looked at all the tropes in film noir and then subverted so many of them (and the film version is totally different, which is really interesting as well). - - - - - #filmnoir #noirfiction #dorothyhughes #inalonelyplace #romannoir #bookstagram #book #booklover #bookstagrammer #booksbooksbooks #bookblogger #bookblog

Morning- happy Sunday! 💚 I haven’t got round to taking my Jan wrap up yet, but I have this lovely white stack instead. Isn’t there something so gorgeous about a crisp white spine?! 😍😍 We’ve finally caved and decided to sort the bookshelf out properly in the bedroom. Ben made a start on moving some of them around yesterday, so now it’s half done I’ll absolutely have to get it finished 😬😬 Can’t wait until we have a place of our own and can build proper shelves in 📚 Has anyone been up to anything nice this weekend? The weather has been pretty miserable in the U.K.! #bookstagram #bookstack #bookpile #whitebooks #whitebookstack #bookphotography #bookworm #cityofgirls #ahalfbakedidea #thelastchildrenoftokyo #milankundera #dorothyhughes #trumancapote #breakfastattiffanys

New additions to our newest section - “New & Recommended” - fresh from the Pony Express!! The Expendable Man by author #DorothyHughes , who also wrote the hardboiled classic In A Lonely Place, wrote this essential read in 1963 & unfortunately it still feels contemporary today. Published by the brilliant New York Review of Books. Also perhaps #JorgeBorges finest collection, Labyrinths. “The truth, briefly stated, is that Borges is arguably the great bridge between modernism & post-modernism in world literature. David Foster Footnote King Wallace. Also very nice trade Mulholland Press reprints of the divine mad dog of hardboiled lit, #JimThompson . Allow me, gentle reader, a(nother) petty moment. 1 of the more ludicrous critical assaults ive read by local critic against artist was Stephen Hunter ridiculing the writing of Thompson. Thompson wrote for his life & often locked himself in a hotel room with a jug of moonshine to write a novel & keep his family from eviction & starvation. He was involved with the American communist party when many workers & intellectuals were investigating alternatives from the Great Depression & union workers being murdered by bosses & their police force. His 1st novel, which was a proletarian realist work in the vein of Steinbeck, was published partially due to his friend Woody Guthrie talking to the publisher. Yes, there are some clunkers in his massive output (the ironically corny & goofy The Alcoholics for 1), but when Thompson hits he hits like an injected drug & puts you right inside the story. I myself experienced a panic attack finishing The Killer Inside Me - while reading in bed in the morning!! His works continue to be passed from friend to friend while I can’t think of the last time anyone spoke of, let alone bought, 1 of Stephen Hunter’s more tightly edited snoozy mainstream novels like Dirty White Boys. I will now crawl off my soapbox.

Kiss for a Killer / 1946 / Originally titled The Scarlet Imperial, this came out a year before her classic In a Lonely Place.

Another Dell Mapback by Dorothy Hughes, whose name and authorship is for some strange reason omitted from the front cover. Her name is extremely small on the spine only. Very odd! The cover art is by George A Frederiksen. The book is dedicated to Eric Ambler. #vintagepaperbacks #thunderballbooks #dellmapback #dorothyhughes

One of my favourite Noirs. Humphrey Bogart excellent as imbalanced screenwriter Dixon Steele but Gloria Grahame sizzles and holds her own beside the legend. 🌹 #inalonelyplace #humphreybogart #gloriagrahame #nicholasray #dorothyhughes #filmnoir #classichollywood #vintagehollywood #blackandwhitemovies #familymovienight #1950s

RIDE THE PINK HORSE is today's #Noirvember film. Wanda Hendrix, at 19 yrs old, turned in a striking performance opposite Robert Montgomery in this crime drama #filmnoir set in a New Mexico town. Montgomery also directed this film, based on the #DorothyHughes novel. The lively, fast-paced script was penned by Ben Hecht and Charles Lederer, with robust oversight by Joan Harrison who viewed the Hughes novel as a personal project. The cinematographer Russell Metty, known for collaborations with John Huston, Douglas Sirk, and Stanley Kubrick, was at the top of his game. RIDE THE PINK HORSE's superb cast included Fred Clark, Andrea King, Art Smith, and Thomas Gomez who was nominated for an Oscar for his performance as Pancho, the carousel owner. #RidethePinkHorse #filmnoir #noiralley #TCM #classicfilm #OldHollywood #bookstofilm

#enunlugarsolitario #dorothyhughes #lecturasoctubre #nadandoentrelibros #librohobbie #eag
