The Legend of the Blue Sea, c’était passionnant : https://www.researchgate.net/publication/326776813_Legend_of_the_Blue_Sea_Mermaids_in_South_Korean_folklore_and_popular_culture . :)

݁₊˚⊹ ♡ | The God and the Gumiho by @sophiekimwrites ★ ★ ★ ★ ₊˚⊹ release date: June 4, 2024 ݁₊˚ | This reads EXACTLY like watching a kdrama! the pacing, the characters individually but also together, the fun silly banter and bickering, the cliches and tropes that are so familiar from kdramas. I absolutely love the tied in korean mythology in a contemporary setting. ݁₊˚ | one my biggest book (any story really) pet peeves is when they do a immortal but visually late 20 early 30 and then the other person who basically just became an adult (yes im looking at you goblin). so this was soooo nice to see how both of them are immortal in their own ways. ݁₊˚ | did i cry like i usually do at some point in kdramas? yes, i teared up and i desperately need book 2 thank you @delreybooks for the ARC [🔖 #bookinstagram #booklover #bookreccomendation #bookish #booklover #bookaesthetic #thegodandthegumiho #fantasybook #koreanmythology]

Book 39 of 2024 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "I was a girl like you until men like him turned me into a demon.... Humans...they are the real demons." This graphic novel was an epic take on Korean mythology. It's not a pantheon I'm super aware of, so it was fun to dive into this story. Kai just wanted to direct her own course through life and fate had other plans. This is definitely a feminist take on the mythology, but I feel like the queer storyline was more if an after thought. The blurb made it sound like it would be front and center in the story, but it doesn't really come up at all until the last 20 pages. I wish it had been more fully integrated into the overall tale. Overall, enjoyable though! Thanks for loaning it to me, @mr.b_reads ⚠️Warnings⚠️ Violence and gore. Misogyny. #amreading #graphicnovel #koreanmythology #bookreview #bookstagram

#kingandthieves #lastofthetalons #sophiekim #loeweverlag #talonsseries #bookblogger #buchrezension #koreanmythology #koreanischemythologie #bookstagram #booktok #bookrecommendations #booksinkorea #buchblogger #buchliebe #jugendbuch #fantasy #mythology

First, thanks to @netgalley for the opportunity to read/review before released to public! This was a surprise 5 star for me 🤩 I have no knowledge on Korean mythology so I went in completely blind. It didn’t take long for me to immerse myself into this story. I immediately connected with grumpy a*s Seokga and sarcastically witty Hani. The story had a good pace and atomospheric build - I really have no complaints. I enjoyed the little twist at the end, not sure how I didn’t see it coming. I will definitely keep my eyes open for more from this author! #netgalley #thegodandthegumiho #fivestarread #koreanmythology #bookreview #bookstagram

✨✨✨ I feel like I’m on a constant quest of trying to find books that gives me Ghibli vibes and this one just fits perfectly. It has a slight vibe of Spirited Away but is more romantic and it happens on the sea. Oh, and it has Korean folklore!! Everything for me to love it! It did not disappoint! #literaturacoreana #literatura #leyendas #mitologia #mitosyleyendas #janghwahongryeon #folclore #leer #cine #series #kdramas #hermanas #terror #cuentos #literaturaasiatica #culturacoreana #cultura #lecturas #koreanmythology #bookstagramespañol #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagramespaña

🐚 🌊 𝗠𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 - My initial thoughts was that this book would be too soft for me (I love angsty reads). But I gave it a try to see how it was and I was pleasantly surprised to find that I enjoyed it a lot! The writing was beautiful and I loved how the author described the worlds as Mina proceeded in her character's journey. This was such a great read. Full of legends, love, magic and fate. ✨ But also light and easy to read without being shallow. It was very beautiful too I got swept up. This book highlights the power of stories and family and choices. The first few chapters I just couldn't put it down! It's been a while since I'd dipped my toe into some fantasy but this was the perfect segway. If you are looking for a easygoing but adventurous read this one is worth picking up! 🦊 Review: The God and the Gumiho ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars I definitely thought the worldbuilding was interesting. Most of the time is spent on a world where humans and immortals exist side-by-side, with the former completely unaware. So the characters have normal, everyday things like coffee, cars, and cellphones, but also have more magical items like swords and charms. I absolutely love Hani. Her hidden past as the Scarlet Fox means she’s notorious in immortal circles. Despite this, she’s actually pretty normal and down to earth. She’s also pretty funny, both intentionally and unintentionally, and I liked her blasé attitude about eating livers. Hani clearly cares deeply and while she’s dedicated to misguiding Seokga in regards to his Scarlet Fox investigation, she earnestly wants to help find and defeat the eoduksini. Seokga, on the other hand, is a complete and utter asshole. But he grows on you. The trickster god is still bitter about being thrown out of the godly world and having his own realm of darkness locked up after his attempted coup. It’s unclear how much of his personality is residual from that and how much is just him naturally, but Seokga really does not seem to care about anyone, nor very many things (other than coffee, man is particular about his coffee). That being said, it becomes clear that Seokga does have deeper ties to his exiled life than it seems, and even he comes to the realization that there are some people that he cares about. If you like: mythology, humor, enemies to lovers Big thanks to @netgalley @delreybooks and @sophiekimwrites for an ARC in exchange for an honest review! 🇩🇪 in comments 👇 . . . . . #thegodandthegumiho #bookreview #buchrezension #buchempfehlung #bookrecommendation #fantasy #fantasybooks #koreanmythology #asianauthors #mythology #bookaesthetic #buchliebe #buchblogger #bookish #bookaholic #bookphotography #buchwurm #bookaddict #netgalley #netgalleyread #netgalleyreview #advancedreaderscopy

This has been something I've wanted to paint for a long time... I've been hesitant when it comes to painting Korean myths or figures from folklore, worried I wouldn't do them justice, no matter how long I've been living here. But rather than having that mindset, now, I just want to share my fascination and love for those stories, but also showing them in a new, hopefully unique context. The first one in the series is "Ungnyeo" - 웅녀 - a bear who wished to become a woman, and passing a test to get that wish granted. What was the test? ... the painting will show more of that in the next paint layer! 🐻🌿 Here, we're still in the early stages, with that first color layer focusing on her face, and my love for cobalt green slowly taking over the canvas... #traditionalart #koreanmythology #mythologyart #acrylicpainting #acrylicportrait #painting #artwip #acrylicartwork #goldenacrylics #goldleafing #magicalart #koreaart #swissartist #portraitpainting #onmyeasel #figurativeart #artwork #beautifulbizarre #narrativeart

* Küsschen 💋 * #kingsandthieves #sophiekim #loeweverlag #koreanfantasy #jugendbuch #jugendfantasy #rezension #enemiestoloversbooks #koreanmythology

The first steps (with bear paws!) for this new portrait painting of "Ungnyeo" - the woman turned into a bear in Korean mythology. I'm starting with elements in gold leaf and a charcoal & graphite drawing to capture her face. We'll see where that journey takes us, as I want her features to become slightly more bear-like while painting... but I have no idea what that actually means, so I'll go with the flow! 🐻 #portraitart #artwip #goldleafart #mythologyart #koreanmythology #koreanart #swissartist #fantasyart #beautifulbizarre #artprocess #onmyeaseltoday #graphitesketch #graphiteportrait #mythology #contemporaryportrait #koreanculture #graphitedrawing #cretacolor

Did you know that Korean dragons are seen as benevolent beings that bring good luck and prosperity? Unlike Western dragons, Korean dragons are not seen as dangerous or malicious. They are often depicted as symbols of power, strength, and protection. Korean dragons 🐉 have long been an important part of Korean mythology and culture. They are believed to have the ability to control the weather, bring rain for successful harvests, and protect the country from harm. In Korean folklore, dragons are often associated with water and the ocean. They are said to reside in rivers, lakes, and seas, and are believed to bring rain ☔️ and prevent drought. Korean dragons are also seen as symbols of imperial power and authority. They are often depicted in traditional Korean art and architecture, such as on royal palaces and temples. Overall, Korean dragons hold a special place in Korean culture and history, representing strength, power, and protection. 🔥Book Review🔥 Y'ALL!!!!! When I say I was scouring every ARC site for this book almost daily for the last six months, that is not an exaggeration! After graciously being given an ARC for book 1 in the series, I could not wait to get my greedy little hands on this one! There is so much to love about this second installment in the trilogy. Here are some things I really enjoyed: 1. Watching Lina's vulnerability with her new body and existence. 2. Learning more of the history behind the Dokkaebi, the Imugi, the war, as well as Rui’s Pied Piper responsibilities and what drives them! 3. The introduction of our two new side characters, Iseul and Seojin. Iseul was so funny and Seojin was a welcome surprise. I also enjoyed seeing more of the relationship between Lina and her sister, Eunbi. As always, Kang from Rui’s council continued to be brilliant! 4. Rui is bae 😍🔥❤️ Overall, there was just so much deliciousness in this installment. I will be eagerly scouring for book 3 for the next six months now 😉 4.5 Stars! Check it out April 2!!! Thank you to NetGalley, Entangled Publishing, LLC, and Sophie Kim for the opportunity to read this book.

📚Book review: The God and the Gumiho by Sophie Kim Thank you to Net Galley for the eARC copy in exchange for my honest review. #netgalley This story follows gumiho, Kim Hani, and the god, Seokga, and their adventure to track down a demon in this world filled with Korean mythology. I learned a lot about Korean mythology and loved the world building in this novel that fused the mythology with our mortal world. The beginning caught my attention, but I had a hard time connecting with the characters mainly through the whole story. I thought the relationships were a bit rushed and I would have liked to see more development. These characters also felt more like teenagers in the way they were talking and thinking even though they are supposed to be ancient. Their banter felt a little cheesy at times which took me out of the story. The plot and the worldbuilding was very enjoyable. The plot slowed down in the middle and had some expected resolutions towards the end, but I enjoyed the plot and all of the Korean mythology included. I was doing a bit of research when certain mythology names came up which I found interesting. Overall, the worldbuilding was done very well, but my connection to the characters was not as strong and I had a harder time getting super invested in the story as a result. #bookreview #marchreads2024 #arcbook #booklover #readreadread #bookwyrms #fantasybook #koreanmythology #loveofbooks📚 #netgalleyreads #bookaddict #bookstagram #booknerd

🩸The Fox Maidens by Robin Ha my new love: graphic novels. i've only read a few so far and have fallen in love with the art and the way emotion and character are conveyed through more than just standard narration. The Fox Maidens is a retelling of the Korean mythology that the author grew up with, using magic and story to root within real history the exploration of queerness and intergenerational trauma. be forewarned! this one will hurt your heart and then maybe wring it out a bit. there's murder and truly morally grey characters. and there are amazing women doing the best they can with the hand they've been dealt. and don't forget the self-loathing and yearning.

“Whenever Daughters of the Sacred Bone suffer for the good of the queendom, the gods fly to their aid.” —Lena Jeong, And Break the Pretty Kings •••••••••••••••••••••••• QOTD: If you had to pick between one of these three magical abilities, would you rather have the power to control elements, create illusions, or manipulate time? I just started reading And Break the Pretty Kings by @lenajeongwrites, and I am loving the magic system in it! Inspired by Korean mythology, this debut YA fantasy novel is about an enchanted princess who must master Sacred Bone Magic, because failing to do so will mean the collapse of her queendom, and the loss of her own sanity. And mastering Sacred Bone Magic isn’t easy! It involves controlling the three magic systems of Seolla—Jade Witchery (elemental magic), Ma-eum Magic (illusion), and Horomancy (time control). Sixteen-year-old Mirae, daughter of Seolla’s current reigning queen, would have had plenty of time to learn it, but her mother is rapidly losing her mind and council members are calling for her immediate coronation. Now Mirae, secretly still in training, must face the Trial of the Gods and take over the throne. And destroy the ancient evil, stop her mother’s mental decline, unite the peninsula, and rescue her brother. All with the threat of hereditary madness and unexplained visions looming over her head. The first book in the Sacred Bone series, And Break the Pretty Kings is a young adult fantasy featuring a time-traveling, monster-fighting, dutiful-eldest-daughter crown princess and an adventure full of legends, myths, prophecies, and dark magic. I’m obviously not done with the book yet but I can’t wait to see where this is headed and I’m already excited for the sequel, which is set to release later this year! Gonna go finish the book now. Happy Friday, and happy reading! 📚 . . . . . #AndBreakThePrettyKings #AsianAuthors #AAPIAuthors #AsianFantasy #AsianFantasyBooks #AsianMythology #BookRecommendation #BookRecs #EpicReads #FantasySeries #KoreanMythology #YAFantasy

Taking slow steps with this painting. Painting big requires me to move my body and think less. I can’t stuck in the details and have to mind the whole space at once. Love it! #paintingbig #koreanfolktales #koreanmythology #goddess #openwaterswimming #artpractice

**Thank you @netgalley & @hodderscape for approving an eARC of this book** A perfect balance of world building, plot and romance The world is well thought out and several creatures belonging to Korean mythology are mentioned: gumiho, haetae, dokkaebi, gwisin. Some gods are mentioned with their kingdoms located in planes other than the mortal one. On the one hand, the visual and easy-to-follow narration style was evocative. On the other hand, however, I would have appreciated it if the creatures (and in general any Korean words, e.g. some dishes) had been described. Some are described in a few words, yes, while many others are taken for granted. As a result, I could not imagine in my mind what each creature looked like and how it was revisited by the author. Several times during the reading I wished I had a glossary, because (a) it is frustrating to go searching on wikipedia all the time for the names of the creatures, (b) the book is currently published in English-speaking countries and I doubt that most people are familiar with all the creatures and dishes mentioned. Since I have spent a lot of time on the wiki, I have tried to make a temporary glossary, which unfortunately cannot take into account the author's revision because there was basically none. Mystery plot with 'bad guy' assistant trope The plot is investigative in nature: several murders occur, clues are sought, research is done and a demon of darkness invades the city shedding more blood. As Hani is a potential suspect, he applies to be Seogka's assistant in order to throw him off the scent, but then they have to join forces. The plot managed to keep me glued to the book. At first, I thought it was very predictable, but there are a couple of plot twists towards the end that I didn't expect and enjoyed. I did regret that the final battle was handled in a rushed manner after so much tension. Tropey romance and forced soap opera-style interactions The romance felt 'tropey': it revolves around the already-seen enemies-to-lovers. In this case, the evolution is lightning fast as it happens within a week. ...continues in comments... #arcreview #kdrama #koreanmythology #thegodandthegumiho #SophieKim

🇬🇧 'Once upon a time, when tigers still smoked pipes...', this is how Koreans express the typical 'Once upon a time' phrase, with which almost all our fairy tales begin. 🐯 In my new book "Korean Myths", illustrated by @blackbanshee1680 , we will discover the tales of the shamanesses, linked to ancestral wisdom that has its roots under the great sandalwood tree, where a bear chose to become the first woman. 🐯 You can find wonderful myths about Korean heroes, gods and goddesses in the new illustrated book "Korean Myths", now available in English ---> LINK IN BIO #korea #koreanmyths #koreanmythology #tiger #art #blackbanshee #illustratedbook #book #booklovers #bookstagram #instabook
