Here are mountains to honor Cheif Ouray and his wife Chipeta (The Peacekeeprs) and their son Pahlone. So on my walk this morning I was chanting this mantra. And on my walk back I saw that someone had just left their dirty mask just lying on the ground in the middle of this beautiful bit of land. I'd seen this before. Some people dumping their masks, and even dog poo bags under a tree 🌳 .. My initial ego reaction to seeing it was going into the whole drama thing of just walking past it with frustration towards the person, and for all people who wear them, who decide to buy them like their a pack of throwaway ONE USE babies nappies.. and just dump them wherever! I got 20steps away from it with all this negative mind chatter, and I came back to the mantra and the meaning of the mantra I was chanting and reminded myself that the mother earth.. Gaia... and all the animals who live here don't deserve it in their home.. They deserve the respect .. So I went to pick it up and take it to the next bin.... During my walk today the same pattern happend a few times when I saw multiple bits of wrappers and litter just on the floor... And everytime I walked away my innerself told me to stop being silly, stop with this victim drama and making it personal... turn around and pick the dam thing up.. And save a squirrel 🐿️ from a suffication it doesn't deserve 😂 (my innerself has the humour 😝) So my walk today was pretty much litter collecting - The really funny thing is, I was picking up all these stuff. And I put my flask in my pocket while I was trying to hold all these in my hands (as I really didn't want to dirty up my pockets with a mask and whatever else I found 🤮) . If you go around Morro Rock to where it faces the ocean... you will find a whole bunch of rocks and often times a bunch of tourists, hikers, and people enjoying our beautiful California coast line. You'll also notice a lot of them stacking rocks. This happens on trails and in stretches of public land. Buuuut, it's actually real bad for the environment and potentially for hikers. Historically, rock stacks and cairns marked trails. So making new ones can be confusing for someone trying to follow a safe path. And moving rocks can actually disrupt sensitive ecosystems. Rocks provide homes and havens for all manner of wildlife. Lizards. Insects. Insect larvae. Salamander larvae. Rodents. Moss. Algae. Biofilm. Etc etc. So. Don't move rocks. Stay on the trail. Leave no evidence of your passing. If you move something, carefully replace it. This is a quick clip of a portion of our field that is resting this planting season. What you see is cereal rye which should help us in many ways. The fibrous root system has been proven to hold residual nutrients in the soil and build organic matter. We intend on growing the rye for a full season which should do wonders for our clay soil profile. We wish we could get a glimpse of what is happening beneath the surface but our hunch is that the roots are reaching deep into the hardpan that currently exists. With time we hope to build more aggregates which will inevitably create more space for air and water. Right off the bat, we sat through a board meeting that detailed the proper forms of community consultation when building on the mauna.
