Hi bookworms, I hope you all are having a super day! - Here are a few of the books that I would really love to read/reread this spring 🌷 ☀️📚 After an extremely busy month, I’ve been enjoying settling back into my routine of spending time reading again during my lunch break, and after work now that my brain doesn’t feel so busy!😍 As a massive mood reader I’m trying not to constantly pick up more that two books at a time as this is distracting me from my gigantic spring TBR😅🫨 I’m currently in the middle of reading The Way of Kings, and Happy Place - two very different books, but I’m just glad to be reading consistently again🫶🏻 - #books #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booksofinstagram #yabooks #bookworm #bookreview #review #fangirl #currentlyreading #aprilreads #thefamiliar #leighbardugo #sharpobjects #gillianflynn #ljsmith #wehavealwayslivedinthecastle #shirleyjackson #ludinthemist #aprilynnepike #springtbr

We Have Always Lived In The Castle by Shirley Jackson - A Review 🏰👧🏼🕯️ I've put off writing about this book for a while because I'm not sure it can be summed up easily, and I didn't want to give too much away for those who haven't read it yet. It's so grim and unsettling that it's outstanding. 👏🏻 Mary-Catherine Blackwood (Merricat) and her agrophobic sister Constance, live with their ailing uncle Julian and black cat, Jonas in a big old house on the outskirts of their Vermont town. The only surviving members of their immediate family following an arsenic poisoning, they are ostracised by their community who believe a murderer lives amongst them. Merricat's narrative sets an eerie and suspenseful tone and it becomes clear she's not of sound mind... Things take an even bigger turn when their uncle Charles pays a surprise visit seemingly to claim a stake in the estates fortune. This is a book about reclusiveness, fear of the unknown and the horrors seemingly ordinary people are capable of. The 'castle' comes to symbolise both a place of sanctuary and a prison, and the tension of this book lies between these two parallels. The intrigue and lure of the story for me wasn't what happened but why and after finishing, I found myself reading over parts and looking for clues to support theories I'd came up with. 😂 I found myself reading about Shirley Jackson's life afterwards and was fascinated to learn she described Merricat and Constantine as two parts of the same person - the 'split women' concept - and how this spoke to her own sentiment when she wrote her novels which was typical of the 1950s housewife. Underappreciated in an unhappy marriage, an agoraphobic herself yet you cannot deny the power and creativity that was in her mind. I like to thinl she must have been laughing to herself when she was writing this book. I wonder if she'd be laughing to herself now if she knew how revered her work would become. 🕯️🕯️

Mary-Katherine "Merricat" lives with her traumatised, agoraphobic sister Constance and mildly demented, ailing uncle Julian in a stately house on their sprawling estate just outside the local town. The three of them are all that remains of the Blackwood clan, half of which expired 6 years back in a horrific multi-homicide (with which one of the sisters was charged). It is due to this dark and shocking past that the family is feared - and thus ostracized and bullied- by the locals and exists quite separately, inside a "homely bubble" of its own, until cousin Charles comes to visit and all descends into chaos... Been meaning to read this for quite some time and finally picked it up as part of the #ψαξετοβιβλίο challenge by my partner in crime @books.and_other.stories. It was my introduction to Shirley Jackson's ingeniously crafted, haunting & captivating world - and I absolutely loved it. A creepy, gothic horror in black and white. No gimmicks, nothing superfluous, just an atmospheric, claustrophobic & chillingly sinister tale of fear, madness, family and the bonds that tie. Unsettling as it was subtle, with a tight plot, skillfully written characters and echoes of the author's life mirrored in the narrative, this will get under your skin (whether you, ultimately, like it or not) and stay with you long after you turn the last page. A solid 5 stars from me - with a definite aim to pick up more from Jackson, in coming months. #recentlyread Vi har alltid bott på slottet (we have always lived in the castle) av Shirley Jackson. Men. 😅🐈 #booksasmedicine #wehavealwayslivedinthecastle

☞ pink moon, frog moon, seed moon, who might be my favourite moon of feeling soft and kind, of slowness and creativity, of comfort and growing like flowery moss and wishing things true! brewing lavender tea, writing things down in my tarot journal from post it notes that i scribbled back when i was too fatigued, pulling new cards that make me feel hopeful and right where i'm supposed to be, after the past two days spent organizing, cleaning both my physical space and headspace, finishing Shirley Jackson's Castle after way too long being unable to focus, wrapping myself in blankets on these still chilly april days (en avril ne te découvre pas d'un fil, as we say here) i think this might be the most beautiful reading i've ever done, feeling right at home on this scorpio full moon. the cards making things so clear: for me right now, growth is in slowness and the small things, seasonal living, rest, being present and progressing at my own pace 🐌🐌🐌 a little word about we have always lived in the castle: i feel like no one understands that feeling of otherness quite like Shirley Jackson. as the afterword put it, describing her, i very much related to that two sided personality of being hypersensitive and being afraid to leave the house like Constance, while also being a feral creature attuned to nature, the rhythm of the seasons and death like Merricat. holding this book dearly against my chest 🍄‍🟫🕸 #april #spring #tarot #pinkmoon #seedmoon #moonwitch #folkwitch #wehavealwayslivedinthecastle #shirleyjackson #slowliving #seasonalliving #darkacademia #bookworm #bibliophile #hobbitcore

When a book is so gorgeous you can’t stop admiring it. We have always lived in the castle by Shirley Jackson. Which book editions do you have that are stunning?

4/22/2024, 10:37:58 AM

About the Book 📚 Merricat doesn't care that people talk about them. She lives a happy life with her sister Constance and uncle. Everyone else is dead. But she doesn't mind... She likes her routine with her sister. Everything is wonderful until a stranger shows up at their doorstep. My Thoughts 💭 What the hell did I just read?? Honestly? I don't know what I was hoping for when I started it but it definitely wasn't this. It's actually a pretty great book with its darkly unsettling premise. It takes place in a small town which is cold and creepy. And the FMC herself wasn't very reassuring. She's definitely a homicidal maniac trying to live a life with her beloved sister, the exact way she imagined. The events in this book are… for the lack of a better word…. Disturbing. Truly greatly disturbing. We don't know who to fault until everything falls apart. And even then.. it's difficult to point fingers. I guess if you're into dark gothic books then this one is definitely a must read. But beware this book gives claustrophobic chills!!! *Shudder* . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #shirleyjackson #wehavealwayslivedinthecastle #merricat #bookreader #bookstagram #bookblogger

We Have Always Lived In The Castle ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Another gothic text and not at all what I expected - and I’m still trying to work out what I think/feel about it. Told from the perspective of a young girl whose family has been poisoned, Merricat has a personal vendetta against every person in the village. This novel is eerie, dark and quite tortured hidden under the mask of two sisters who exist in a gorgeous property, love gardening and have an affliction for baking. Two personal favourites of mine are an unreliable narrator and a good plot twist - and this book has exactly that. Though, there were times where I couldn’t tell if things were ambiguous or just simply unrealistic. It makes me wonder whether the entire book is satire, or simply elements of it are. It’s also only 150 pages long so a super speedy read!! Definitely recommend if you love a thrilling novel and want to dip your toes into gothic literature. . . #bookstagram #bookreview #bookrecommendations #bookaesthetic #gothicfiction #gothicliterature #reading #readersofinstagram #wehavealwayslivedinthecastle #bookcommunity

Two of the biggest inspirations for my writing, plots and especially HOUSE OF THORNS in particular. Shirley Jackson really knew how to do the perfect eerie novel. The Haunting of Hill House and We Have Always Lived in the Castle are two of my all time favourite books - which do you prefer? Which author do you own the most books by? I’ve been rapidly collecting Shirley Jackson titles over the last year or so, having first read ‘We Have Always Lived In The Castle’ on holiday in Rome last year. ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ is one of her most famous works, and definitely one of my favourites, but I absolutely adore her nonfiction. She has such an amount of wit, and such a way of turning the most mundane of family moments into a cracking anecdote. I’m slowly working my way through the rest of her work, including novels like ‘The Sundial’, her short story collections and her essays, and I’m so looking forward to all of them. #shirleyjackson #thehauntingofhillhouse #fiction #nonfiction #bookstack #bookphoto #bookstagram #author #penguinmodernclassics #favourite #favouriteauthor #irishbookstagram #essays #bookrecommendations #bookrecs #booksbooksbooks #reader #reading #wehavealwayslivedinthecastle #thelottery #horrorfiction

2024: Book 19 🐈‍⬛ We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson (1962) 📖: A classic, quiet, thriller novel, selected for this month’s “Tough Guy Book Club” meet. I enjoyed We Have Always Lived in the Castle, not having read something like it before - almost a lucid dreamlike offering, exploring the life of the remnants of a family, after the bulk of them died by a poisoning. I am desperate to know more about the lives and story of the central characters before and after the scope of this novel, the curse of such compelling writing. Quiet and humble in its approach, mystically melancholy with elements of dark humour and descriptive grace, We Have Always Lived in the Castle is a quick classic read, providing a glimpse into a life that kept me questioning the whole way through - is there magic afoot? Mental illness? Or just plain evil?

Et recomano també La loteria, un relat també de Shirley Jackson que em va posar els pèls de punta... we have always lived in the castle by shirley jackson; this is the first book i read by jackson, and the only other i have read since is the sundial… i really REALLY need to pick up more of her novels because her writing style and sense of character study is unlike no other. as you have probably guessed from the books i have posted in the past, character studies are my favourite. i love a book being narrated by an unreliable, lonely character who manages to project their thoughts, feelings and fears onto every other side character in order to set an atmosphere of tense, beautiful storylines. this was one of those books. i don’t want to ruin the plot for anyone but this is a big name in gothic literature, with the family it focuses on living in a castle that is secluded from the rest of town. they spend their lives being judged and as a consequence the little girl, who narrates the story, is sent into town to get food and supplies etc. at home, her only friend is her little cat (who arguably is the best character, but i may be biased…) as always with jackson’s work, there are dark themes within this novel which add to the mystery and the gothic aesthetic - namely, there is talk of a murd3r within the family. the whole book centres around the events of what happened that day, and whether or not the rumours are true. i cannot wait to reread this one. #reading #read #book #bookstagram #booktok #instagrambooks #author #reader #history #historian #bookpost #pages #escapism #escape #lovereading #firstedition #bookstore #bookshop #readingtime #shirleyjackson #gothic #gothicliterature #thesoftmoon #wehavealwayslivedinthecastle #whalitc #castle #gothicbooks #classicliterature #penguinclassics #mystery

This book hurt my heart, gave me hope, made me angry and made me hate people all over again. Once again, Shirley Jackson has a way with words. The Balckwoods have my heart and I definitely recommend this short read to anyone. Not scary and not exactly haunted house per se, but still a very good read and has creepy vibes when you figure out what happens. At the end of the day, people suck though and Constance Blackwood will forever be stuck with me. Available on Hulu and AMc. After a family tragedy involving arsenic 6 years ago, the remaining 3 still live in the castle isolated from the nearby village. 18 y.o. Merricat shops in the village weekly but it’s unpleasant the way many villagers treat her. Her magical spells don’t seem to protect her. Actor Highlight Day ❤️ - American Horror Story - Taissa has been in a few seasons of the show, she was a huge part of Seasons 1 and 3, and had a little part in Season 5. I loved her in her roles in the show. Season 1 especially so much rested on Taissa's performance as Violet. It really was brilliant and her characters journey was such a tough one. She nailed the emotional beats and there is one moment where her reaction to a massive moment was utterly chilling and heartbreaking. In the 3rd Season, there was still emotional moments, but i liked that there was a lighter tone too to Taissa's character. She, for me, is a large part of what i loved about the show. She does horror so well!. - The Nun - I already knew going into this one Taissa would be good in the role because she had the horror experience from American Horror Story, so she absolutely knows how to play up the fear and anxiety of a horror role. She played Sister Irene in the movies and though The Nun movies are my least favourite of The Conjuring franchise, i loved Taissa's performance in them. She gives the film more weight because of her acting it makes the stakes seem more real because of how genuine she plays it. - We Have Always Lived in the Castle - My most recent watch of Taissa's, honestly the film wasn't the greatest, though i definitely recommend watching it at least the once. But again, you can't fault her performance and she gives a good one. It was unlike any of her roles i had seen before. It legit reminded me of Wednesday Addams in the anti-social aspect of her character - Merricat. Though i liked the reveal later of why her behaviour was so strange and it made sense. It was a good performance and made things interesting!. She is a very good actress and i always know that no matter what she's in, i'll enjoy her performance, because she always gives it her all each time!.

𝗙𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗹𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝘆 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗞𝗲𝘆𝘀 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I feel like this book has finally put an end to this ongoing trend of mine to read things that leave such profound marks on my mind because this…? This was everything. I clearly knew nothing about this book going into it because I had assumed it was simply about a mouse named Algernon — oh my god there are tears in my eyes, I just remembered the last sentence of the book. All I was told was that it was a really good book and it left my sisters just thinking about it and questioning a lot of things for a significantly long time. I understand why now. I understand the lasting impact this book is going to have on me and I understand that I am going to be terribly heartbroken from now on. The whole book is written as a series of diary entries or 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 as logged by Charlie Gordon, a 32-year-old man born with an intellectual disability. He writes these entries as he undergoes an experimental procedure that increases his IQ, including his life post-procedure. This book was hard to put down and also hard to continue at times because it was actually very sad and had me really thinking about a lot of things. It’s a look into so many things like mental disabilities, human nature, love, and intelligence. 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗹𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗼𝗻 had me feeling so many emotions at the same time: sad, angry, hopeful, disgusted, as well as frustrated. I feel as though this is such a timeless read because it can apply to today as much as it could have back when it was written (in the 50s/60s!!!). There were people in the book that had me physically frowning in disgust but as much as they were fictional, it was equally disappointing to remember that such people still exist and certain stigmas surrounding the mentally disabled are still very much talked about in certain circles. All in all, this was such a terribly heartbreaking book and I really will be taking a break from reading such heavy topics for the time being. Not only did it strike a chord with me, I’m also pretty sure this is going to linger for some time. The ending was everything to break my heart and more.

📚📚📚Book Review 📚📚📚 Star Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ CONFUSED! Is what I’m after finishing this novel. This Novel does showcase some excellent writing and story telling skills by the author. Chapter 1 needed my utmost attention and I had to slow down my reading pace to understand all those directions and the story because there was a lot going on. From the chapter 2, the story began to flow more easily and I was able to pick up some pace with my reading, by chapter 5, I was enjoying the story with the entry of cousin Charles and Merricat’s attempts to frighten him with all that poison talk. By Chapter 7, I was back to the blurb in search of some missing element, like a plot or some kind of purpose or meaning to this story but failed to find any and by chapter 9, this book began to wear me out in terms of reading, I had to put it down and pick it back up a couple of times. This is how I actually felt at each of these stages throughout this book. Though I enjoyed the writing and the narration from Merricat’s POV but as far as the story goes, this book just didn’t make sense to me. There was no plot or purpose as to why the characters behaved it a particular manner, was Merricat dead or alive, I had no clue. It was absolutely not a horror story and was very childish. And the ending just went on in a circle and the chapters grew longer and tiresome to get through. The book just left me with a lot of unanswered questions. I personally wouldn’t recommend this book unless you are looking for a good piece of writing. #wehavealwayslivedinthecastle #shirleyjackson #horrorbooks #shortreads #novella #bookstagram #books #bookofthemonthclub #bookclubbooks #bookreview #bookclub #goodreadsgroup #botm #mumbaibookstagram #thrillerbooks #booksta #bookstagrammer #smallbookstagrammer #smallbookstagrammer

Sempre Vivemos no Castelo - Shirley Jackson 🖤 "Chamo-me Mary Katherine Blackwood. #darkacademia #vintageaesthetical #livros #livrosgóticos #gothicbooks #gotico #gothic #semprevivemosnocastelo #wehavealwayslivedinthecastle #shirleyjackson

A little dump of my morning at Bag of Beans, Tagaytay ✨ This random morning trip was such a good decision because I missed being surrounded by trees and fresh air, plus seeing as I’m also still not feeling too great thanks to the Manila heat, the cold weather was a wonderful change 🥹 Of course I brought my book and my Kindle along with me. I obviously never go anywhere without my Kindle + it was also my first time in such a long time to take a physical book with me anywhere 📚 I hope you’re all having a great Tuesday! Stay hydrated!!! 🫶 —— 🏷️ ——— #bookworm #bookish #bookstagram #bookstagrammers #flowersforalgernon #wehavealwayslivedinthecastle #bookishpost #mustreadbooks #reading #reader #bookcommunity #booksta #bookstagrammer #potd #bookblogger #readersofinstagram #booksofinstagram #booksofig #currentlyreading #nowreading #kindle #kindleph #kindlephilippines #igdaily #breakfastdate #readingaesthetic

We Have Always Lived in the Castle Merricat, Constance and their Uncle Julian live in isolation after experiencing a family tragedy six years earlier. When cousin Charles arrives to steal the family fortune, he also threatens a dark secret they've been hiding. Starring - Taissa Farmiga, Alexandra Daddario, Crispin Glover, Sebastian Stan, Paula Malcolmson, Peter Coonan. I had this one in the watchlist and decided to give it a go last night. Honestly it was decent but not as good as i was expecting. The movie revolves around a mystery, we see that the Blackwood family - Merricat (Farmiga), Constance (Daddario) and Julian (Glover) all live in this mansion in this small town, they had a family tragedy a few years prior and the town all hates them for some reason. I honestly think it's one of those, when you're watching you are wondering about the behaviour of the Blackwood family and why they are so strange, but you don't learn until the end, so things only become clear as it finishes and you are able to reflect. It was interesting though i have to give it that, especially so when Charles (Stan) shows up, he is the only one who appears normal and it was hilarious seeing him getting more and more frustrated at the behaviour of the family particularly Merricat who despised him. I did feel so sorry for the characters though, it was clear they had lived an isolated life and it made the scenes where Merricat had to go into the town for food nerve wracking, more so because the abuse she would get when she did from the townsfolk. Standouts - Taissa Farmiga was really good in the role of Merricat, it was such an anti-social role and it honestly reminded me a little of Wednesday Addams. Sebastian Stan too, the guy just has so much charisma and his scenes with Alexandra Daddario will be sure to keep your interest!. Bottom line, a film i'd definitely recommend seeing at least the once, purely for the unusualness of it and the wild characters. But not one that you're likely to rewatch. Watch on Prime Video. What did you think of the Movie?

🏰 Horror: From the Shelf to the Screen Volume V - We Have Always Lived in the Castle 🏰 Happy Sunday bibliophiles! Another chapter in our Horror book, here’s We Have Always Lived in the Castle, Shirley Jackson’s last novel. It was published in 1962, but Jackson started working on it in 1959. We are in the mind of a completely unreliable narrator, 18-year-old Merricat, who’s deeply disturbed and lives in a big house with her sister Constance and their uncle Julian, who’s disabled. We learn that the rest of the family died of poisoning, and that Constance was initially blamed for it, but was later found innocent. The town people, however, don’t agree with the verdict, and they treat the sisters as witches, so Constance never leaves the house, and Merricat only does once a week to buy supplies. Suddenly cousin Charles comes to town, and wants to marry Constance to steal her inheritance. Merricat immediately dislikes him, therefore start her tries to push him away from her home and family. In 1966 there was a theatrical adaptation of the novel by Hugh Wheeler, which premiered on Broadway, and in 2010 Adam Bock wrote a musical adaptation of the play. The most famous adaptation is the 2019 film directed by Stacie Passon, starring Taissa Farmiga as Merricat, Alexandra Daddario as Constance, and Sebastian Stan as Charles. The film was written with the involvement of Laurence Jackson Hyman, Shirley’s son, and I must say that, plot-wise, it’s really faithful to the book. I don’t think it hits home as hard as the book does though, and for one simple reason: it’s really hard to render the fact that in the book, we are seeing the world as Merricat is seeing it. We discover things as she discloses them to us, and there is only her narration, therefore her perception of what happens, which might not be the truth. In the film we see things happening, such as Charles beating her as punishment, so in the end the whole thing of empathizing with her is not as effective as it is in the book. I still think it’s a good film, and I adore the story: if Hill House is presented to us as already Haunted, here we learn how a home becomes a Haunted House. More in the comments!

happy Sunday, lovelies! i hope you’ve all had a fantastic week! no major reading updates from me! i’m just taking it easy this month and trying not too push myself to read 10+ books. i often find myself wanting to do other things, but feeling guilty that i’m not reading. sometimes it’s nice to take a mental break from books and just focus on being in the moment. on that note, i’m kinda torn with what book i should start next. i do want something to read, i think i just need something that isn’t a 4+ book commitment 😩 lmk in the comments some of your fav standalones! #QOTD what has been your latest 5 star read? #bookstagram #bookworm #book #romance #bookstagrammer #quotes #writer #reading #poetry #fantasy #read #booklover #bookaholic #literature #bookphotography #readinglist #readersofinstagram #novel #bookcommunity #bookmarks #blackcat #shirleyjackson #horrorbooks #wehavealwayslivedinthecastle

Sunday details 🌱 I haven’t read more than one book at the same time in years but a few days ago while reading a bit on my kindle, I got this urge to pick up Flowers For Algernon from my physical collection. Watch as I forget that I’m reading two books and end up focusing on one or the other 😂 On another note, the heat lately has been so debilitating!! It’s been so bad that today I’m starting to actually feel ill. I think it’s heat sickness or something. Please please PLEASE stay remember to stay hydrated and (if you can) try to avoid prolonged direct exposure to the sun 🥲 Also: sunscreen!! —— 🏷️ ——— #bookworm #bookish #bookstagram #bookstagrammers #flowersforalgernon #wehavealwayslivedinthecastle #bookishpost #mustreadbooks #reading #reader #bookcommunity #booksta #bookstagrammer #potd #bookblogger #readersofinstagram #booksofinstagram #booksofig #currentlyreading #nowreading #kindle #kindleph #kindlephilippines #igdaily #bookclub #readingaesthetic

🌙 We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson 🌙 Reading We Have Always Lived in the Castle was an otherworldly experience. The unreliable narration, intrigue, and unique characters all contribute to a narrative that feels equal parts reality and fairytale. I don’t think I can pay it a higher compliment then to say it has been safely tucked away on the “to be re-read” bookshelf.

𝐰𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐞 - 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐞𝐲 𝐣𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬𝐨𝐧 “𝐌𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭, 𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐞, 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐜𝐮𝐩 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐞𝐚? 𝐎𝐡 𝐧𝐨, 𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐌𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭, 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐥𝐥 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐞. 𝐌𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭, 𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐞, 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐨 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩? 𝐃𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩!“ It’s pretty obvious once you start reading the first couple of chapters who is responsible for the death of the Blackwood family. I interpreted this two ways, poor mental health or abuse. I am leaning more towards abuse based on Merricats behaviour, the way she thinks, her mannerisms, and the things she talks about. Shes 18 but she comes off as much much younger. This was brilliant but I have no idea how to talk about this book without writing a novel and giving so much away. You have to read it to understand it. It’s very sad when I think about it. • • • • #wehavealwayslivedinthecastle #blackwoodcastle #blackwoodfamily #darkread #gothicreads #shirleyjackson #bookstagram #audiobooks #libbyapp #libby

I love reading and I set my goal for 20 books this year! I'm not one of these 100 books read in two weeks people 😞 I've managed to get through seven since January 🤠 The Godfather by Mario Puzo - Great first choice this year though there is an odd storyline regarding the size of a certain somebody and her something that was slightly peculiar inserted into a book about a mafia family. I'm not scared (Io non ho paura)by Niccolò Ammaniti - My reading started off slightly Italian 💁🏻‍♂️ but I found this book in Waterstones and a little note advertising books that good weird in a good way ! That sold it to me ! And I really enjoyed it likeable character, pretty much a stand by me - ish vibe but poor Michele is on his own in this one but he has one hell of a time 😞 The Housemaid&The Housemaid's secret By Freida McFadden - This was fun ! So many twists and I never thought I would be into it but my Friend recommended it and we had a double book club and both of us could not put them down! Desperate housewives vibes and was there for it for both ! We have always lived in the castle by Shirley Jackson - at this point I thought I hit a wall I just didn't enjoy it and I wouldn't allow myself to put it down! ( I really should've) It bored me to tears and I just didn't get it! Unlikable everything..just Meh. Flowers in the attic by V.C Andrews - This one got me back on track! So much fun and so much soap opera cruelty it was amazing! TW: Suffering kids - absolute c*nt of a mother! The Southern book club guide to slaying vampires by Grady Hendrix - Yaaaaas! This was fun ! It actually scared me several times I had to just put it down and go to bed 😂 But it was so fun it's like a mixture of The lost boys, fright night and desperate housewives (I'm noticing a pattern here) sooo good! It was my third Grady Hendrix novel and by far my favourite. 2024 heres to reading more 📚📖 bookstagramfriday, #fridayreads, #fridayfavorites #mariopuzo #gradyhendrix #niccoloammaniti #vcandrews #freidamcfadden #shirleyjackson #thegodfather #thehousemaid #thehousemaidssecret #thesouthernbookclubsguidetoslayingvampires #wehavealwayslivedinthecastle #imnotscared
