📽️ The Killer (2023) Director - David Fincher Cinematography - Erik Messerschmidt . . "The Killer" tells the story of our killer, which we are not given the name since it acquires different identities during his travels, who is looking for revenge following the assault against his partner by a group of thugs. Director David Fincher presents us a thriller absolutely not up to par with previous works, with characters that are expected to play a more or less important role in the story but that are at the limits of the macchiettistico, so with personality equal to 0 and anything but original. The work done on the protagonist, however, is excellent. The killer is cynical, ruthless and apathetic, almost inexpressive, and Michael Fassbender does his character justice. From a thriller magician like Fincher I certainly expected more in terms of rhythm and atmosphere; the film since its introduction tries to get the viewer inside the story through sequences of a sublime work by the director who, with an important continuous alternation between diegetic music and extradiegetic music and the lines of the narrating voice, he manages to create great cinema, but from then on he will not be able to maintain that level of suspense and quality of direction. Despite the ending tends to overturn what we tend to see in a revenge movie, as if you want to make from one moment to another the protagonist a good, something that, not anticipated by a psychological path that leads him to this direction, personally makes little sense, the work is not far from hundreds of movies of the kind we can find on Netflix. I am way too excited by today's @criterioncollection announcement that Trainspotting is coming on Blu-ray and 4K in January. This is one of my favorite movies ever and one of the most important films in my life, one I honestly can't count how many times I've seen. When I was in college, I was actually interviewed by someone for a dissertation on perceptions of Danny Boyle's films and I spoke extensively about this and 28 Days Later. I've also read the book four times, and @irvine.welsh is maybe the most important writer in my life. I was even wondering a few weeks ago whether s fancy Blu-ray release of this film would come out soon, given that it's the 30th anniversary of the book's release, and there is a new edition of the book coming out. It's been 20 years this month since I moved to Tokyo for a year to study Japanese art, language, photography, film, sociology etc at @sophiauniversity I've been having a lot of nostalgia for Japan recently, thinking about that year and feeling really old. The Third Part of the Night (1971). Nazi occupied Poland. A surreal, hallucinatory hellscape. Everyone is morally compromised, consumed with guilt and confusion. The best job around, the most secure way to get papers and stay out of the death camps, is to help create the typhus vaccine by being literally eaten alive by lice, which are then used to create the vaccine. Those lucky enough to get the job are driven insane by itching and the perpetual skin-crawling paranoia that lice are everywhere, consuming. There is no place for art: used bookstores fill with beautiful volumes of great literature no one buys; sheet music is burned by a father driven insane by grief. Gestapo are rarely seen but always present, they could be anyone. An incredible book looking at a century of Salvadoran history, from the 1930s to the present. I read this for a book club at work and I'm very glad I joined. It's been fascinating discussing it with people from different backgrounds of different ages with different perspectives. It's almost impossible to make sense of the scale of tragedy in this book, massacre after massacre, the war, mass migration, gangs forged in the furnace of US systemic racism then deported to wreak havoc on El Salvador. I knew a bit about the recent history of the Civil War and the maras before I read this, but I didn't know it went all the way back to the 1930s, and I didn't realize the direct connections from colonialism to what happened in the '30s. It was also really fascinating to get a perspective on how the stock market crash destroyed nations they were forced to participate in the international economy by Western powers. The book is incredibly well written and structured. The intro connects the way in which the machete dismembers bodies to the way in which Salvadoran memory and history has been taken apart by violence, and the necessity of re-membering. I watched To The Wonder on a whim last night, a beautiful film. The emotional punch surprised me only because I've never heard anyone speak about this movie since it came out. The way it parallels romantic love and love of god/religion is powerful: it examines the quest for the sublime in a lonely, unstable world filled with destruction and desolation. The characters yearn for epiphany from some exterior force, while in fact the sublime lurks all around them in the divinity of themselves, others, and the world (which we see being quietly annihilated). With the exception of one character, they all fail to find peace within themselves, instead endlessly seeking it in places they will never find it. The performances are fantastic. Olga Kurylenko is incredible as a sensitive, romantic, poetic soul constantly fighting the confines of her social roles. Rachel McAdams imbues tremendous soul into a religious rancher who has trouble trusting others because of past trauma. Javier Bardem perfectly embodies a priest for whom Christ has become a vocation, not a passion. Ben Affleck, at the center of it all, provides unstable gravity as someone who says very little and refuses to make important decisions. Rewatched this one recently for the first time in years. Good lord I forgot how incredible it is. Everything about it works. Alex Garland is such a great writer of character, but also such a great writer of theme, and to do everything he did in about 100 minutes...mama mia. it's also eerily timely for a film that came out nine years ago. Oscar Isaac and Alicia Vikander are beyond incredible, and the ever excellent Domhnall Gleeson playing the straight man role opposite such juicy parts holds the center so well. So much of the brilliance of this film is unspoken and between the lines. Dovete sapere che adoro i B-movie... quei film pezzotti che si potrebbero riassumere con: l'Asylum alla regia, i riassunti di Yotobi ai tempi d'oro, splatter finto ed esagerato e recitazione pari ad un comodino. Il mio sogno è avere un appuntamento in una sala cinematografica vuota stile Donnie Darko e guardare qualcuno di questi film orrendi...magari senza coniglio. Ma veniamo al dunque, questo è un manga serializzato dal 2020 e inedito in Italia. Se vi piacciono i B-movie, il black humour politicamente scorretto, la violenza e tanto sangue... beh fa al caso vostro. Si chiama "killer Shark in another World" e racconta la storia di Shiromi, una giovane maga, che evoca per sbaglio questo squalo gigante in grado di uccidere non solo tutti i suoi nemici, ma anche la sua intera classe di magia... Dire che è volgare e con una serie di scene tragicomiche, non rende abbastanza l'idea di genialità di quest'opera! Ogni capitolo praticamente omaggia qualcosa del cinema horror, splatter e di serie B. Vengono citati persino le pellicole di: Sharknado e Midsommar!
