Being National Park week I thought I’d post a pic of the iconic Delicate Arch! Arches National Park was the first National Park I ever visited when I was a kid and so it holds a special place in my heart! In January I had the opportunity to take my boys back to experience it, (although they technically have both been there before but were too young to remember it). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This wasn’t originally part of our plan but we gained a few extra days on our trip do to our flight being cancelled because of the whole Alaska Airlines emergency door situation. I wasn’t complaining! Arches in January was amazing, there were hardly any people there ( although I still had to patiently wait for a group of girls to each do there individual poses and tic toc videos to take this shot without people in it)! · Bella Terra · Apparently after three days of torturous wind we decided we hadn't had enough and chased sunrise clouds up to elevation again. To our surprise the clouds were amazing catching light as massive dirt devil's formed below on the valley floor. Oh right, that's a different image! But that wind whipped and twirled across Manly Lake creating what looked like a chaotic watercolor painting. Salt that rose above the lake formed what seemed to be island that had a spitting resemblance to Italy. Another shot of Artist Palette! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This was probably my favorite spot in Death Valley. As seems like is always the case we were rushing, racing the sun to get here. Having gotten sidetracked with some other stops along the way that I thought were the right spot (beautiful but not artist palette), I was sweating bullets to find it in time with the right light I wanted. With a little luck on our side we got it right in time with some amazing desert thunder clouds rolling in. And an added bonus I got this one little cloud lit up with the sunset behind us, that floated on by. As we were finishing up, that thunderstorm showed up with a vengeance. My son and I took off running, getting drenched as we went, thoughts about flash flood at the front of our minds. · Layer Cake · The theme continued as we decided to hit up Zabriskie for sunset and we're yet again pounded with wind. It made that narrow ridge trail treacherous and down right now fun. · Electric Slide · This was one of the more difficult evenings I have shot in. I've never had a facial but I'm pretty sure my face paid for five over the course of sunset. I've shot the dunes in some pretty windy conditions but this was beyond anything I had ever experienced. It was down right brutal at times with sustained gusts never seeming to end. At times I just had to stand with my back to the wind and hug my tripod waiting for the abuse to end. But during a few of those times I was mesmerized at the transfer of sand over the scars the winds left. So we last went to Death Valley National Park in 2011 and at the time we didn’t love it. My wife would always describe it saying, “a whole lot of death, a whole lot of valley!” We just went back again in January and my experience could not have been more different! I thought it was absolutely stunning. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Of course we had to checkout Badwater Basin, which due to recent flooding had formed a very rare lake. At -282 feet below sea level it is the lowest place in North America. So we last went to Death Valley National Park in 2011 and at the time we didn’t love it. My wife would always describe it saying, “a whole lot of death, a whole lot of valley!” We just went back again in January and my experience could not have been more different! I thought it was absolutely stunning. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Of course we had to checkout Badwater Basin, which due to recent flooding had formed a very rare lake. At -282 feet below sea level it is the lowest place in North America. · One Love · What a trying and difficult week. Death Valley has become an annual pilgrimage for me since moving to California and this year might have been the toughest. Winds started hammering the valley Thursday and didn’t let up until Sunday. Ruthless and relentlessly pounding us for 3 days and nights to the point where we couldn’t even get out of the camper and explore Saturday afternoon. But with crazy conditions sometimes leads to crazy cool moments. After standing out on a ledge for sunrise Saturday in cold never end wind a wonderful little moment presented itself. One for the books… Went on one of the more brutal hikes I’ve been on yesterday with family and friends. South Kaibab down to Phantom Ranch and back up on bright angel. 17 miles, 10 hours, worth it.

· Dancing Shadows · On this particular morning @bj.stockton and I had completely different plans than this shot, turns out mother nature had something else in mind for us. A storm rolled into Death Valley the night before and was supposed to clear at sunrise. Well, it didn't clear, and we didn't even get that cool stormy cloud look. It was a wet, damp, socked in summit. We waited and waited and waited. Rocky's stomach finally won out so we decided to head back to camp. On the way back down we came out of the canyon to light and shadows dancing across the valley and the mountains all around us. We hung out for a bit just watching and shooting.
