Je termine l'année littéraire avec "JE NAIS DE MES RACINES" (118 pages) de l'ecrivaine turque Tomris Alpay aux éditions @kontreditions (Grâce aux retards habituels de la Deutsche Bahn, c'est la première fois que je lis un livre entier durant un voyage en train !) À travers les portraits de Gülsün, Aghavnis, Zilha et autres femmes turques d'origine arménienne, grecque et autres minorités, c'est un portrait historique de l'Istanbul des années 50 qui se dessine, perso ça m'a beaucoup intéressé. Ça donne envie de faire un voyage dans le temps. Il y a tant de choses qui nous lient à ces femmes. J'ai beaucoup aimé les références culinaires. Le seul petit "reproche" que j'ai à faire, c'est que le livre est trop court. On s'attache vraiment aux personnages et hop on passe au chapitre suivant, j'aurai aimé les accompagner plus longtemps. Une belle découverte en tout cas ! On dit qu'il ne faut pas juger un livre par sa couverture, mais ici l'illustration de Umut Pehlivanoğlu fait honneur au livre! AUTHOR OF THE WEEK Orhan Pamuk Orhan Pamuk is a Turkish novelist, screenwriter, academic, photographer and recipient of the Nobel Prize in literature as well as many other literary prizes.   Despite being Turkey´s best-selling writer he is controversial in his home country for not shying away from writing about contentious historical and political events such as the Armenian genocide and criticising Turkey´s treatment of its Kurdish population.   Pamuk's books are characterized by a confusion or loss of identity brought on in part by the conflict between Western and Eastern values. They are often disturbing or unsettling, and include complex plots and characters. His works are also redolent with discussion of and fascination with the creative arts, such as literature and painting. Shafak rarely ever disappoints me. Each book of hers is a soul-searching journey into the psyche of female suffering. 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World is about death and Leila. Each minute is a memory triggered by a faint memory of a taste, a feeling, or a desire. The life she lived, the friends she made and the decisions that brought her to a moment where she is lying dead in a back alley in Istanbul. When I first picked up the novel, I lost interest in it very soon. I couldn’t make sense of what it was about. I picked it up in a whole different mindset and I finished the book in one go. There is no in between with this book. Just finished reading The Island of Missing Trees set in post colonial Cyprus and London. It's the tale of star-crossed lovers Kostas, a Greek Christian and Defne, a Turkish Moslem, whose love story struggles to survive the strife between these two communities. It is also the story of their daughter, Ada, who grows up in London, her parents keeping much of their cultures from her. And then there's the fig tree that stands witness to their lives in Cyprus and London, taken as a cutting by Kostas and transplanted to London. The tree's perspective spans generations and encompasses the history of the island, its animals and plants, as well as the characters' personal histories. I've read two of Shafak's previous novels, and although it isn't my favourite, it shows her usual complex understanding and nimble storytelling. If the world had been kind to me, I would have never built my own little Safe Heaven. But the world was not kind enough with me.🌻 The reality is so scary. This society is so scary. I always ran away from it and used to dwell in my own little world that I hide from everyone.🌀 This fictional world is so peaceful. No drama. No complains. No demands. No one tells me to behave in a certain and acceptable ways there. No one asks me to shut my mouth and follow whatever this world wants me to be and do. No one wants to change me from a person as I am, to a person that would be complete alien to me. It is like a Heaven for my aching soul. It is like my own Lala land.
