Team trials is 100% a mental grind and anything can happen. I thought it would go a certain way but it had different plans. On day two during practice I had tweaked my left leg. I was able to grind through it but my shot making was not good nor was it repeatable. Day 3 I was able to go 181,191. But, my leg was holding me back from committing to a full shot, having to bail out and fall off the shot because of the pain. I decided after the second game that I would not want to further risk my health and decided to withdraw from the rest of Team Trials. I am disappointed with how this years tournament ended, but I am excited to compete collegiately second semester! #wolvesup🔴🐺⚫️🤘 ps. I am so grateful to my amazing friends/family who have helped me in the past few weeks!🙌🏽 I am so blessed to have you in my life💕 This setback is going to make me stronger thanks to all your support!👊🏽 . On the 25th June I broke my ankle in 3 places during a XC MTB race.🚵🏼‍♀️ Came round a bend at speed and my foot got caught on a rock, flicked outwards and snapped.🦴 I knew it was bad when I went to get back on my bike and my leg moved but my foot stayed behind.🦶🏼 . I spent the first few days feeling sorry for myself and grieving the sudden loss of my athletic identity whilst fearing that I may never be able to reach my athletic potential.😔 I had 2 bone manipulations with general anesthetic a week apart then a week later the surgery where I got sliced open in multiple places and a set of screws and plates imbedded into my foot.🔪⚙️🔩Spent 3 days in hospital post surgery and when the anesthetic wore off I could feel each one of those screws in my ankle🪓🔥😤I refused pain meds for the first day as I wanted to endure the pain but got a spray from the anesthetist the next day who told me I’m not meant to endure this like an Ironman and I need to take meds.💊🙄The physical pain was horrendous but combined with the mental pain it certainly challenged me.😑 . Training is my drug, my addiction, and I had gone off it cold turkey. 🚳I thought physical pain would distract me, and it did to some extent, but I don’t recommend it.🙅🏼‍♀️It gave me a new perspective and made me grateful for being alive and that my injury could be much worse🙏🏼 . I do not have a victim mindset or feel sorry for myself. I have turned my obsession with training into an obsession with bone and wound healing with a positive mindset.🥦🥑🍇🧠I am excited (in a weird way) for this challenge and to see what I can do on my return to sport and how much stronger I will be when I overcome this setback.🚴🏼 If my type of sport has to change well I’m ok with that and I’ll just dominate what I can💪🏽 I am more determined than ever to defy the odds and be the best version of myself.👊🏽 #trimalleolarfracture #setback

Week 8, post-fracture identification. I. Can. Walk. Now.!. YAAAAAAAY! Ok ok. Slow down. Here’s the real ride the last week has been. Over the last 10 days, I’ve been cleared to verrrry sloooooooowly increase body weight on the injured foot until I can get up to 100%. Which is today. In complete honesty, I’ve been a bit scared to actually try putting my foot down or putting weight on it. The boot weirds me out - it’s awkward, it changes my step, it hurts other parts of my foot and my calf. So this morning when I tried my first steps without crutches I broke down a bit bc it hurt in ways I wasn’t mentally ready for. Not the injured bone tho! But other places - especially my plantar tendon. But I’m trying my best to be careful and easy with myself. So I’m using one crutch now - which is HUGE, let’s be real for a minute. I haven’t really walked on this foot since mid-December. I honestly have been filled with so much confidence this past week and a half. Knowing that things are healing well, that science is coming in clutch for me with this bone stimulator, and feeling useful and appreciated in my light duty role at work. I’m learning a new skill and have managed to realign my life priorities - reconnecting with some ppl who weren’t in the running scene with me. I also anticipated this mental block - though I expected it with a return to running not this early on- where I would fear using my foot bc “it’s made of glass”, basically. So I grabbed a copy of this book, “Rebound”. I forget who recommended it where, but as an injured athlete with this high risk, terrifying, little studied broken bone (a bone that has the power to completely alter my life permanently) I saw the tagline of this book and decided I needed to see what it offered. And it has not disappointed. It even brought up something I hadn’t realized I was actually doing (secret goals) and how they can cause us to re-injure bc of fixating on them and being inflexible. Lucky number 50 today. I wasn’t expecting to do this triathlon since last night I took a bad fall when I was just starting my last training ride last night. I definitely messed up my arm and thankful I had a helmet on to protect me from hitting the pavement hard. Very sadly I have to withdrawal from the last CPEDI of the year at Keysoe. Unfortunately I’m poorly and in hospital and with every will in the world - it’s unrealistic to think I could be fit and well enough to be at keysoe. I’m beyond gutted - but my health has to come first. I’m no stranger to hospitals and stays and this is just a small bump in the road and we will now set out winter training, ready to push for internationals next year. Big Thanks to Flo Dawes and Ali, for giving me the opportunity to qualify the Gorgeous and very fun Chilli for this and for being kind enough to allow me to pilot her round. She is beyond cool. 1-5: how training for @ocrwc was going the last few weeks —> vs training now... well more like recovery. For those who did see my story, I fell off an obstacle early on in the @spartanrace beast last weekend. Immediately I knew I fractured my wrist. I thought about walking the rest of the race but knew I didn’t have enough water and nutrition to be out there all day. So I walked over to the staff/volunteers at that obstacle and asked for medical. In 4 years and 50+ races, it was the first time I DNF. To be honest, I was more upset about not being able to finish the race and missing my next few race weekends than I was actually getting hurt. I taped my wrist up with painters tape I found in the back of the staff truck (which surprised the medics and doctors 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️ , not sure why lol, I was in pain and that was the only thing I could do and it helped haha) I was really excited because last week I started working on one arm pull-ups and was surprised when I was able to do it with 50lbs on the assisted pull-up machine. I thought for sure I was gonna have to take off more weight, I actually started with 80 lol. I have at least a month for recovery, with a follow up ct scan at the end of September. So... no #ocrwc for me this year. Taking this time to really listen to my body, rest when I need to, and work on my imbalances. Maybe my left arm strength will finally catch up to my right arm (as of last week lol). I saw a post the day after I fell... “Perhaps God is sending you to unscheduled and inconvenient things for His glory” -Shala W. Graham Not sure what His plan for me is at the moment, but I’m praying for His peace and guidance during this time.

Back home after 4 days in the bush. Giving Tommy some much needed respite from being my carer. I can now wash my hair myself!! Next hand therapy appointment next week. Wound has healed nicely. Keeping my head in the game, trying to still train within my capability. I couldn’t really pinpoint the source of my pain. It felt like it was my lower back, but not like other times I’ve had back issues. My first visit to Marie helped a lot where she identified my glutes were super tight and I needed to work on them, and while that helped it still didn’t go away. I wondered if maybe I needed a chiropractor so I hit up @drmattcolby to see if that would help. If you’re in the Chandler/Tempe area and ever need to be repaired, that’s his speciality....Fixing broken athletes, daily! The day I went in to see him I couldn’t even pick up he ball for the dog without supporting myself, let alone pick up a barbell, or squat. I’m still working on the recovery, but already my quality of movement is turned back around. Wanted to share my experience in case anyone deals with the same. Also wanted to give the Dr a plug. 🤕A year ago doctors told me I’ll walk funny and struggle to run with the possibility of sport being out of my life for good. Now I look back and laugh at 2019. . I AM BACK...Olympic lifting been a while with taking time to nurse my broken legs and regain strength, however translating that strength into power can be seen through cleans. . 🔑 Triple extension and getting under the bar has been my main focus. Efficiency 1st—Bigger Engine Next• • What happens when you put a @ferrari engine on a chassis with misaligned tires? Typically, nothing good!• • Unfortunately, this is what happens with many athletes and they wind up broken because their inefficiencies are left unaddressed. Yet we throw them in the weight room & on the field for the “bigger, stronger, faster” work. = #brokenathlete• • Image above: When stuff like this happens, I can’t but feel incredibly grateful for all the amazing individuals I have learned from over the years. It started with my first mentor, Mel Young. May he rest In peace. He turned me onto Gary Gray, that led to @FMS and learning from @brettjonessfg. Next, it was @zuzana_suzan and @dnsrehabilitation. All the aforementioned are incredible practitioners and I would love to, and will, tell you about them another time.• • More recently, I went to go see @joecicinelli for a body issue that I was having and he turned me on to @billhartmanpt. I have studied from and worked with @barrunning. I have also recently started learning from @davidgreyrehab, who turned me onto @garyward_aim . I’m excited to dive deeper into it with the last four mentioned. Ahhh, time...need more of it. Without doubt, I have left individuals out of this post (and I apologize). EN: I'm glad I enjoyed Saturday's Pilancones Tunte Trail race because little did I know that it would be my last run for a while. . . My foot has been totally fine these last weeks (including the race) but afterwards I had a massage and the man twisted my foot, I felt a sharp pain and knew something was very wrong. . . I tried to run this morning but after 10mins it is already sore. So my plans to go to El Hierro to train and race have been put on hold and I will stay here on Gran Canaria a little while longer to see if some rest and cycling might help it to heal again. . . I feel somewhat like I'm going round in circles with this silly foot; last week I was so excited to finally be running again and starting to train properly and hopefully see some return to form. Oh well. It is not to be. . . At least I've had some lovely company this week and even if I can't run, my great minigolf and "arrange the buffet like a fancy restaurant" skills mean I have plenty of other competitive options. . . No he tenido ningún problema con el pie estas últimas semanas (incluso durante la carrera) pero después, durante un masaje alguien me torció el pie, sentí un dolor agudo y sabía que me había pasado algo malo. . . Intenté correr esta mañana pero después de 10 minutos ya me duele. Así que he cambiado mis planes para ir al Hierro para otra carrera y entrenamientos y me quedaré en Gran Canaria un poco más para ver si descansar y hacer bici pueda ayudar. . . Me siento como si estoy dando vueltas con este pie; la semana pasada estaba super feliz de poder entrenarme normalmente de nuevo y esperaba ver mi forma volver. Bueno. No puede ser. . . Por lo menos he podido disfrutar de esta semana - gracias @gallotiatrail - y incluso si no puedo correr, mis talentos de minigolf y "hacer que tu plato de Buffet parezca como en un restaurante formal" quieren decir que tengo muchas otras opciones competitivas 😄

Addiction is a bizarre thing. When we think of it we usually lean toward things like heroine or alcohol, but we humans can be addicted to anything. - Anything that gives you a “high” or makes you feel comfortable.... including pain, fatigue, and self hate. - Wait those things don’t make you feel comfortable right? - Depends🤷🏼‍♂️ - If that’s the status quo then changing it is more uncomfortable than marinating in it. - Here’s an example when nicotine hits your blood stream it makes chemical changes those chemical feel good. - Pain,stress, and fatigue work similarly. The input given to your nervous system from them also make chemical changes. They don’t necessarily “feel good” but they create a precedent. They create the “norm” and then that becomes the norm it gets harder and harder not only to make changes but to even believe change is possible. - You get addicted to feeling like a dumpster fire not because you don’t want to feel other things like you do with something like heroine, but because you don’t believe you can and neither does your body. - You can though, I promise.

Cerrando este año de competencias y agradecido por haber podido terminar saludable este año. Con muchas ganas de mejorar en todos los aspectos tanto profesionales en mi trabajo en @ngupcommx y como atleta master. Gracias a @throwdownby52 y todo su equipo de trabajo por montar un evento fuera de serie que sin duda tiene la mejor cobertura en vivo del evento a nivel nacional y eso es algo que los atletas y aficionados al crossfit valoran demasiado. Fue un evento impecable donde también conoces nuevos compañeros master que comparten la misma pasión que uno. Gracias a toda la comunidad NGUP por el apoyo y las porras, a @iammariatb por ayudarme con todos los aspectos de mi nutrición pre y Inter competencia. A @brokenprototype por el apoyo con los accesorios que necesito para poder competir. A @suplementosbodynutrition por cuidarme de todo a todo con sus suplementos. Y gracias a @luismarinamaya y @gustavop94 por el tiempo que me han brindado para seguir mejorando en mis levantamientos olímpicos.
