I am loving this weather and all the outdoor sessions with sweet families like these. When we showed up to this session it was raining and then the skies cleared up with the most beautiful golden light!
When I was a kid, I was afraid of the dark. I would turn out my light from the hallway, then get a running start and jump across the shadowy swath of carpet between my door and my bed, and hide beneath the covers, until my parents came in to tuck me in. The same kid whose very first spoken word was “light” didn’t realize the friendship shadow wanted to share with him. When you take a photograph, it’s this relationship you’re working with. Sometimes I get to the end of a session and think 'Wow! That was a miracle!' 😆 Mums love to warn me that either their kids are shy, or they are busy and don't like to sit still. These babies had NO idea. They had no idea where life and love would take them.. what true heart ache, or keeping house or being a mom and dad or true working professionals....even remotely looked like. It’s surreal to me that we’ve had children, lost pets who felt like children, had a diagnosis like MS, and NOW know that the cutie man in the photo now needs HIP SURGERY. Cam deformity of the lateral femoral head, which tore his labrum! We’ve now heard from a LOT of people who have had the same surgery!?!? He will have a surgery consult with Dr. Price SOON. Just pray for him please. He is SO active, works out daily, does alllllllllllll the things. I love you, Asa and I promise I WON’T make you cook while you’re on crutches.
A couple of snippets from April: 1. A morning stroll through La Jolla for some of the best croissants from @lillilajolla . 2. Our monthly visit to @rikkafikacafe . 3. Spring break meant loads of time out getting fresh air and our dose of sunshine! 4. Ventured to South Lake Park in San Marcos with the rest of San Diego to see the lilacs. 5. We have been loving making pan pizzas from scratch. All the pepperonis for Sofie’s pizza. 6. I left my job as a circulator and was deeply saddened to leave behind the best co-workers. 7. My goober. 8. @tannersprimeburgers opened up in South Oceanside which is home to some of our favorite restos. 9. @littlefoxcupsandcones collaborated with @mrazfamilyfarms to create some delicious flavors! 10. It’s ALMOST warm enough to wear dresses and Sofie can’t help herself but be kawaii!

In 2018, my son and I paddled from Glacier Island, outside Valdez, AK, to the face of the Columbia Glacier, the fastest retreating ice sheet in North America. Since 1983, when the tide first crested its moraine, triggering a structural collapse, the ice sheet has retreated over 13 miles — 13 miles in 30 years. The scale of the void opened up there, in that one finger of the Prince William Sound, boggles the mind and trembles the soul. We tend to think of Void as “anti-space,” a concept inhospitable to nature, of which we are a small part. Void, in essence, reminds us how fragile our home is — by home, I mean this frail, finite, and foolish bag of cells, first and foremost. But wholly, willfully hurling my body into this Void brought me to a different understanding, one akin to the teachings of Laozi, who spoke of “The Great” as both a departure and the beyond. In the amphitheater of Columbia Bay (swipe for the expansive panorama), I glimpsed The Beyond and heard the invitation in its departing. The corollary to Void, we might call Source. By entering this particular Alaskan void (a specific place in a perceivable nature), a Void opened inside me, a longing for Source, which brings to my mind the way light enters a dark room. As a filmmaker and photographer, light is a subject about which I am, to say the least, obsessed. Light exists as both particle and wave, two things at once. And, when you start looking at it closely, you find these light-like dualities everywhere. Presence and absence for example, or shadow and light, but also Source and Void, each exist in tandem, one requiring the other, Unity through Duality — which tells me duality, as much as unity, is very likely the truest nature of Existence. Lately, I find myself marveling at how much I’ve missed out on by seeking to avoid the Void, all the while not realizing that where Void exhales, Source inhales. Late last year, I started collecting pictures of #morning_light on the backsides of the signs I pass on my daily walk. They remind me that the part of a thing that everyone else is convinced is all there is an about that thing isn’t, in fact, all there is. Even with something as straight forward as a stop sign, there is more, and there is probably something unexpectedly beautiful about it, but only if you’re willing to let it be more than what everyone else assumes it is, which is ordinary. In Art as Technique, Viktor Shklovsky writes about the intention of defamiliarization: “The purpose of art is to impart the sensation of things as they are perceived and not as they are known. The technique of art is to make objects ‘unfamiliar,’ to make forms difficult, to increase the difficulty and length of perception because the process of perception is an aesthetic end in itself and must be prolonged.” Prolonged and, perhaps, turned into a lifelong pursuit. Why not? What a blessing to have a mezuzah hanging in my new home, surrounded by people who love and support me. This moment took 8 long years to arrive! What a trying and tough journey it was! I wanted to quit so many times! I cried out to God so many times! I persevered over and over and over again. I showed up when no one else would and God showed up for me time and tine again. That stretching and growing is so lonely and so heavy to carry! I could not have done it without out these people encouraging me along the way. I waited and dreamed for this home and here I am, thankful beyond measure to be coming home to this place everyday. Never give up on yourself and never say it’s impossible! Be ready to sacrifice for a season so that your seeds have time to sprout and then bare fruit. The journey is not a glamorous one, in fact it’s pretty deplorable, but so much beauty comes out of those humble seeds! It’s so worth it! Stay steadfast!
