Tini’s school has a wellness program and one of their initiatives is to create programming for the students during finals. It’s awesome that they’re prioritizing student mental health and that they recognize that exams can be huge stressors. As part of this initiative they put on an event called “De-stress Fest” and have hosted different university sponsored activities on campus like a petting zoo, or today, build a bear. Of course Cricket made a German Shepherd friend, she misses her Scout terribly. How gut health affects metabolism⁠ ⁠ 👋 Pause the scroll and take a minute with me here if you are trying to get answers to what you feel like is a broken metabolism! ⁠ ⁠ While a lot of factors play into metabolic health, research shows that one important factor is GUT health. ⁠ ⁠ Here’s how:⁠ ⁠ 1️⃣ Energy Absorption⁠ Gut microbes produce short-chain fatty acids (SFCAs), which are generally beneficial but when produced in excess can provide extra energy (like calories) absorbed from the gut. ⁠ ⁠ 2️⃣ Appetite⁠ Gut microbes regulate gut hormone levels, like peptide YY and GLP-1, which communicate with the brain and affect appetite and fullness. ⁠ ⁠ 3️⃣ Fat Storage⁠ Some gut microbes increase the absorption of glucose (sugar) from the intestines and promote fat deposition in the liver. ⁠ ⁠ 4️⃣ Inflammation⁠ Chronic inflammation is a hallmark of metabolic dysfunction and can be driven by inflammation in the gut. ⁠ ⁠ You don’t actually have to know all of this to heal (that’s my job). My legs don't want to work today, so Rosie-robot is vacuuming while I recuperate from a quick trip to Styleworks to re-work the hair situation. It's frustrating when your body can't do what your mind thinks it should. One excursion and I'm done! I took time off from work to hang with my faves in the school holidays and was sick THE WHOLE TIME.
