Last year, I spent some time in Korea and have been eager to visit again. Since then, I’ve been wanting to read some Korean literature not just to find connections and to reminisce on the amazing time I had while I was there, but also to expand on the translated literature I read. Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong bookshop was an immediate add to my TBR when I learned about it and has been one of my most anticipated reads of the year. This book is so heartwarming, hopeful, and full of amazing characters with complexities, problems, and dreams, or, lack thereof. I found myself finding something to highlight on nearly every page, from quotes to other books that I would like to learn more about. I loved being with Yeongju and learning why she opened her bookshop and all the interesting details of what it takes to run one. Minjun and his conflicting inner turmoil between working tirelessly at a corporate job while wanting to please his parents and living a slow but fulfilling life working as a barista in Yeongjus's bookshop. There’s also a cast of other characters you get to see a glimpse into the lives of and how they interact with the bookshop and with each other, and also a bit of romance that I was pleasantly surprised with. It also comments on Korean society, which I think a lot also applies to society overall, with smart observations and callouts. The dialogue is done very well and sounds so natural it feels like you’re in the same place as these characters simply eavesdropping on their conversation. When I was reading this book, I was so connected with the characters and the setting, and when I wasn’t reading it I was daydreaming about moving to Korea and opening my own bookshop! The ending is satisfying with each character having growth and their own type of happiness. I typically shy away from slice-of-life or, “no plot just vibes” books, as I’ve had more misses than hits, but I absolutely adore this book and would like to find more like it. 🏠 New Review 🏠 The Guest ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (➡️ for synopsis and content warnings) Would recommend for fans of… 🏠 The Wife Between Us 🏠 The Soulmate I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with B.A. Paris. I really enjoyed her early works but her last few have not been my cup of tea. And while her latest, The Guest, wasn’t a runaway hit for me, I think it would be the perfect beach read for many people this summer. The Guest has a lot in common with your typical domestic suspense novel — a marriage is on the rocks and as more stressors are introduced, things begin to unravel. I really appreciated how Paris created enough characters and motives to keep the reader guessing. However, with so many characters and so many events, the story and mystery got a little bogged down by seemingly inconsequential action. I also didn’t love the ending. I won’t say much to avoid spoilers, but if you’ve read this, I’d love to discuss! The Guest is out now. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Both were very stubborn and set in their ways but always seemed to compromise at a weird time for me. And while I’m all about strong uncompromising women in books, Zarrah and her honor got on my nerves a few times. Otherwise I loved the book! I loved seeing the story from the first two books told from different perspectives and I loved getting to know these two characters more! As someone who loves unlikeable characters, these were all unlikeable in an upper class ‘you love me tho’ modern lit way that was at times… a lil annoying! 🤍I think the narrative dances around the heart of what it’s trying to say in a way that didn’t feel purposeful just clumsy. 🤍 Still, I liked the female characters a lot (even Zoe who was frighteningly one dimensional) and I liked Cleo’s suicide attempt a lot. What I didn’t like was how her happiness was disregarded at the end of the story in order to make Frank ( a total prick) look good. Not all sins are created equal and Cleo really weren’t to me imho ⭐️⭐️.5 /5

Persephone Books One of the most wonderful publishers I have been exposed to directly because of #bookstagram is @persephonebooks. Publishing mostly mid-twentieth century women writers, they produce some of the most wonderful and beautiful books. They just celebrated their 25th anniversary and I thought it was high time I purchased a few brand new #persephonebooks. I own a few secondhand copies but this is my first time buying new. The two books I chose were One Afternoon by Sian James (Miranda compared this to Rosamunde Pilcher) and The Home-Maker by Dorothy Canfield Fisher. I am not sure which one to dive into first. Or do I pick up one of the two Dorothy Whipple’s I purchased secondhand - High Wages and Someone at a Distance? Friends Nonso, Remi, Aisha and Solape are four friends who meet on the first day of boarding school in Nigeria. Through fighting for their revolution at school we are then transported through each of their lives & the events that then shape them. ⚠️grief I have recently read a number of books with reference to the Nigerian culture which I enjoy. Develing into the aspects of the culture through the writing is refreshing and eye opening. Throughout the book I can honestly say, I only engaged with 4 of the chapters. The following were: -jollof rice & revolutions -czekolada (chocolate) -last stop, Jibowu, -start your savings account today. These specific chapters I felt held depth and had good story development throughout, which made me want to read on (these chapters came later on in the book) if I didn’t persevere I wouldn’t have come across the last 3 chapters mentioned above. Having read books with a collection of short stories before I knew that it was likely that there would be a slight link. What I did not bargain on was the need to remember how certain characters were connected to one another throughout the chapters. At times I was a little lost because of this. You’ll have to read it to find out how various people link. It may have been helpful for the chapters to have the name, in brackets, of the person narrating the story. To round up, the final chapter then thrusted me forward in time to the summer of 2024 (we haven’t even hit spring properly in real time🙈) and fast forwarded on to 2050. Not only was the chapter long, the style of the book changed to a dystopian era- which just felt odd. The last chapter was used as a wrap up of all the stories however I personally feel the whole book could have been made into one whole story. It lacked the engagement factor and I had to work wayyy too hard to remember who is who. Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I read this book soooo quickly! I love that it felt like a real-life romance! The main characters were not perfect, nor was their path to each other. ✨📚book review📚✨ The Push - Ashley Audrain ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I honestly feel awful rating this 3 stars but for me, personally, that means I would absolutely still recommend it IF this was the type of books you enjoy. It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t for me. I could fully understand why a person would rate it higher and vice versa. Blythe is terrified of becoming a mother because the women in her family tend to not be great at it. When her daughter is born she doesn’t feel great about being her mother, she believes there is something wrong with Violet. Over the years several things happen to justify Blythes reasoning behind her skepticism of her daughter, but is it all in her head? Her husband seems to think so. Then when her son, Sam is born she gets the connection and finally feels what she didn’t with Violet. Then after a tragic “accident” involving Sam she spirals and questions everything and everyone in her life. As a disclaimer because I don’t notice a content warning of any kind, this book does mention child abuse.
