I still can’t believe I’ve been cold showering for 5 months! Although I had a 6 weeks break, while I had the flu & injured my back, I am cold showering again and starting was just how I left it of 😮‍💨 Actually I used to alternate shower days with hot bath days but in the last 2 weeks I’ve only been showering and reached another milestone ⬇️ In the last 2 days I even managed to shower down to the coldest setting 🥶 And knowing what I was like with cold water 6 months ago, I’m really proud of myself!! Nevertheless, my body ached through the process but I survived without shivering. I’m just hoping my immune system is improving from it🤞🏼 Besides now this therapy is now part of my routine, and i feel like my mindset has massively changed. I’m not saying I love cold showering as to control my body, I still have to use breathing techniques before showering and throughout. But I have noticed it helps how my body feels afterwards. For me it’s definitely more beneficial as soon as I get up and before I have breakfast. You can peep the motivation behind every action you take, some motivations are very very subtle, but if look closely enough you'll see it, is our motivation wholesome or unwholesome? sometimes we mask a unwholesome motivation by over laying a wholesome motivation, for an example we may do a "generous" act but underneath we have a subtle motivation to receive a thank you, to receive a tiny praise for our action, if you helped someone and they didn't even acknowledge you, they received your gift and didn't say thanks, that is completely fine in the mind of someone who gave purely without intention to receive thanks, it wouldn't affect them in the least because there was no motivation to receive "anything" back, not even a small thanks was required, when we give with zero expectation then we truly receive the happiness generosity brings and it comes with zero expectation from the receiver. I really miss training at the gym (it’s only been a week!) but am continuing to workout at home until my son is with his dad for the hols. I was feeling kinda tired before I began but I knew that if I didn’t do something physical, that lethargic feeling wouldn’t lift. Knowing this has always motivated me to train even when (especially when!) GIIIIIIIRRRRRLLLL After slacking for about half a year I had totally forgotten how horrible the first cold shower feels 😫 But I had also forgotten how incredibly happy, proud, blissful and energized I feel afterwards and how insanely much it helps managing my ADHD symptoms 🤩 Yes, the first 30-40 seconds feel like torture, but if you can control your breath and mind and push through, you suddenly come out of the fight-or-flight response and feel pretty zen 🧘🏻‍♀️ It’s like a switch has been flipped. Super weird. And after that I automatically breathe calmly and start singing along with the music. And your body actually gets used to it pretty quickly if you build it up. After doing it for a week I can already stay for 2-3 minutes easily and actually enjoy the cold 🥶 (I know..Who is this?!) For people who don’t know me that well; I’m always cold. Dutchies call me a ‘koukleum’ and Spanish people say I’m a real ‘friolera’ ❄️ So if I can do it, everybody can. YES! Including YOU! It’s scientifically proven to elevate levels of dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin, hence alleviating many symptoms of ADHD, depression, and anxiety. Cold showers activate hormone Irisin which is involved in burning of adipose tissue (fat) and helps reduce blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Subjecting body to cold for several minutes after exercise will initially cause muscle contraction and in turn constriction of blood vessels which will help flush lactic acid from muscles and also flush lymphatic system. 100 reps at 350 tire flips in under 25 minutes…. I set it up as an EMOM and did 5 flips in a minute and whatever remaining time was my rest. I had to stop because my back was flailing up a bit so what you see is the two rounds I missed combined into one…. At bout 60 reps in I started hitting that wall where I was saying to myself “this is dumb, you’re in pain, you broke a sweat go home.” And I immediately snapped out of it and said “no I’m a finish this workout I planned even if it takes longer than expected.” It’s a good win for a 6:30 am workout I feel like I can crush the day now!! Koud douchen/koude training. Je hebt ze vast wel gezien, al die mensen die toen er eindelijk weer eens in Nederland een pak sneeuw lag, een duik namen in de sneeuw, of een duik namen in het ijskoude water. Misschien heb je gedacht die zijn gek, of misschien ben je al wel bekend met de voordelen maar lukt het je nog net niet om die (koude) sprong te wagen. Naast het feit dat douchen met (ijs) koud water ecovriendelijk is, heeft het ook flink wat gezondheidsvoordelen. Koud douchen is onder andere goed voor het immuunsysteem, de bloedcirculatie, de thermoregulatie, gewichtsverlies en de huid. Bovendien verbetert het ook de sportprestaties. Nu de lente aanbreekt is het ‘het perfecte moment’ om je lichaam en geest te laten wennen aan koud water training. Het grondwater is namelijk wat minder koud dan in de winter. Start door na elke warme douchebeurt, de thermostaat elke 15 sec een paar graden lager te zetten. Kijk tot hoever je kan gaan en bouw dit langzaam in jouw tempo op tot het je lukt om minimaal 2 minuten koud te douchen. Dit kan namelijk, als de drempel te hoog is om meteen 2 minuten onder de ijskoude douche te gaan staan, ook door middel van ‘de kleine stapjes van Kaizen’ (zie eerdere post). Since a few months every morning I’m having a cold shower 🚿 as part of my morning routine. After a workout I let the water go for a while to be as cold as it can be and then I get into the shower for a few moments of pain. I recently met a lot of people that, when heard about it, felt the need to inform me: “I could never do it, I hate cold water!”. And like every time I hear other people’s opinions, I started to reflect about it, and I confirmed to myself that that’s exactly the point: I’m doing it right because I hate cold water as much as them. If not more. So why am I punishing myself in a such hateful way? Well, in the lines before lies part of the answer: some people see something they don’t really feel they can do, and picture themselves as so. I prefer to think about me as a person that can overcome some of his limits. And that’s where cold showering comes to help. There are several benefits in taking cold showers in the morning. They help your blood circulation and strengthen your immune system. They also help you recover after workouts. But the most useful thing comes from Stoicism. It’s no secret that cold showers are an ancient stoic practice to help you accept discomfort in your life: exposing yourself to daily doses of middle discomfort makes you actually stronger. Of course, getting used to pain caused by cold water will not make you a superhuman that can handle every bad situation in his life, but it will surely help you to accept some things more easily. What I found really interesting in this practice is that it requires self-discipline. Getting ready to open the shower tap in the morning cold, knowing what you’re going into, is not an easy task. Your mind could start to find excuses and you could feel like you’re about to do something that you don’t really want to. But that’s the power of it: winning the resistance no matter what, avoiding listening to your thoughts, dealing with the discomfort and winning one of the first battles of the day. 🥶 C O L D S H O W E R A L E RT 🥶 Who’s that? It’s me! 🙋🏻‍♀️ ~ This is me this morning fresh out of my cold shower. This is a practice I’ve been following for a few years, in the winter. ❄️ ~ 🚿 I know it sounds crazy but a cold shower is so invigorating and has lots of benefits. ~ 🤩 It energises you: cold water sends electrical impulses to your brain which jolt your system to increase alertness, clarity, and energy levels. ~ 😁 It makes you happy: endorphins, aka happiness hormones, are released leading to feelings of well-being and optimism. ~ 🤸🏻‍♂️It improves metabolism: white fat is associated with obesity and heart disease but we are all born with brown fat and this is activated by exposure to cold temperature. ~ I always start warm and the turn it down. Just start at 30 seconds and build up a little more each day. You can do it!
