Y digo esto porque pocos directores se han atrevido a mezclar géneros tan dispares como el western y el terror, y hacerlo además con acierto. A bote pronto me vienen a la memoria Craig Zahler y su Bone Tomahawk o la gran Ravenous, de Antonia Bird. John Geddes escribe y dirige este film donde un ex soldado de la guerra de Secesión nos cuenta sus primeros encuentros con los zombies. A pesar de sus agujeros de guión, que los hay y gordos, la película adolece de una narrativa inusualmente densa para ser un western. Todo ocurre muy lento, le cuesta avanzar. A eso añádele una duración de cerca de dos horas que se ve totalmente innecesaria. Esta trama con hora y media se despacha fácil. Tampoco le ayuda el reparto. Actores de segunda fila, pero de segunda fila del tercer anfiteatro. De lo que en Cádiz se conoce como el gallinero (las gradas más altas del Falla y por tanto más baratas). Junto a ellos han intentado elevar un poco el nivel con otros de cierto caché pero que tampoco son para tirar cohetes, como Bill Moseley (Halloween: el origen), Dee Wallace (E.T. El Extraterrestre) o Stephen McHattie (Super detective en Hollywood III). Para un actorazo que tienen, Brian Cox, lo usan para la voz en off sobre los pensamientos e inquietudes del prota que plasma en un diario, donde además hace sus pinitos como dibujante. La ambientación no está mal, aunque la parte de las trincheras subterráneas está muy desaprovechada para las buenas dosis de terror que ofrecería. El maquillaje es excelente para el presupuesto que tiene, los zombies no están nada mal. Valoración 4/10. Tiene algunas escenas que son rodadas a modo animación y si la hubieran hecho todo así creo que molaría aún más. I could never get my hands on this one, and a couple months ago I randomly spotted it in used a DVD store. Always happy to add another cold and wintery horror to the yearly December watchlists. “Scarce” is the first of many low budget horror films by Canadian indie horror filmmakers Jesse Thomas-Cook and John Geddes. As it turns out, I’ve seen two other films by them, and rated both 3/10, although I will never be able to erase “The Septic Man” from my mind. Good news is, “Scarce” is my favorite film of theirs so far, bad news is, despite the great effort and palpable genre spirit, many problems are present. . First act is certainly the weakest, as we get introduced to our three protagonists, young snowboarder dudes going to a party before getting on the road to travel across states. Before the guys get those shabby directions from shady locals in the middle of nowhere, the film shows off some of what’s to come - inconsistent acting & cinematography, flawed editing, especially sound editing, overall cheap-feeling aesthetic treatment (snow blizzard effects take the throne). However, all is expected in the B horror universe, and “Scarce” takes a turn for the better when the villains come in - lonely, creepy, southern and old-school minded middle age men that might just be trying to feast on you as the uncomfortable visit goes on. “Scarce”, even with its micro budget, echoes the atmosphere of such flicks as Wrong Turn, Hostel and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and that’s where its quality lies. That, and in the bringer of a bit better acting performance – Steve Warren as the somewhat emotionally sensible but rather insane lonely cannibal aptly named Ivan. It’s worth mentioning that special effects treatment got better when things turned gory, for the filmmakers did it the old-school way, with real blood and guts from local butchery. . I liked it, I enjoyed it, however there were a handful of distracting flaws and somewhat awkward pieces of scenes, and in its sum, it falls a little bit below average for me. Nonetheless, it’s worth checking out if you’re well into the genre “Scarce” represents, a kind of gory, torturous and psychopathic adventure. My rating: 4/10.

De winter is niet per sé mijn favoriete seizoen, want daar ben ik een te erge koukleum voor. Maar het is wel een fijn seizoen om even lekker in mijn warme cocon te kunnen kruipen. Me weer even lekker bezighouden met sinterklaascadeautjes, kerstkaarten en het plannen van alle tripjes naar de familie. Qua werk gaat alles ook vanzelf op een wat lager pitje omdat mijn opdrachtgevers vaak bezig zijn met het afronden van allerlei dingen en ook wat minder moeten van zichzelf. The headliner featured the Milky Way in that wide-open, moonless, cloudless San Luis Valley sky. Absolutely otherworldly.
