Which means someone is always lying.” - His & Hers, Alice Feeney🪢 Alice Feeney has blown my mind yet again. This book has constant twists and turns that kept me guessing the whole way through. Every character was a “suspect” in my mind at one point or another, and I changed who I thought was guilty basically every chapter. The narrators were phenomenal and I highly suggest you listen to this one in audiobook form. My heart was pounding so hard while I was listening, right up until the end. There were several times that I winced or gasped out loud, and I was totally freaked out for most of it. There were so many subtleties that were hidden along the way that kept me drawn in, and it was impossible to put down. I was still piecing together the story right up until the last chapter. I kept thinking “There’s no way she can tie up all these loose ends in 15 minutes.” but she sure did. Feeney is a genius and you can’t convince me otherwise. Anyway, go listen to this book. It took me a few days to process what the f*ck I just read. Runa was inspired by a nightmare, and what a way to interpret a nightmare. This book was so beautifully written, and one crazy mindf*ck. There's a lot of trigger warnings, so please check them before deciding to read this! This is a very dark book, but the plot twists keep you so sucked in. I loved Nova & Tyr's story. It was a beautiful romance story built from trauma. After the rescue, everything gets turned upside down and absolutely insane. I like to start reading a new book without any idea what to expect, like dive in completely clueless. Most of the time I don't even read descriptions, and oh my I always witness the unexpected 🫠 This one is such a captivating story. A haunting and thought-provoking narrative of identity, mortality, and love. The story is set in a boarding school called Hailsham, where children grow and indulge in normal schoolwork. They are completely unaware of what lies ahead in their lives- and the dark, disturbing secret on which the walls of Hailsham are built. It is a story of three friends who navigate their lives after uncovering the truth of their existence. Their emotions, love, friendship, and sacrifices linger in your mind even after the book ends. It sprouts a weird emotion that you love and hate at the same time. It was as if I had read it before somehow and at the same time, it's completely new. Weirdly familiar and chilling! The masterful exploration of what it is to be a human and the sacrifices we make for love makes it an unforgettable read!! **Spoiler alert** It is set in a dystopian world where human clones are created for organ donation. The whole purpose of them being in existence is to grow-up and develop. And then be a caregiver, donate all of their organs, and eventually die. Yes, you read that right! . . . . . ✨ REVIEW ✨ Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton This book is remarkable. Birnam Wood is a gardening collective. They use scraps of vacant land to plant vegetable crops, and the harvest is shared or given to those in need.  Sometimes these gardeners use land without permission. Sometimes they blatantly break the law. Throw into the mix a run-in with a mining billionaire, and things get interesting. 🌱🌱🌱 In the beginning I found the language in this book to be a bit heavy and convoluted -  I exerted a lot of mental energy comprehending the politics, philosophy and the lengthy debates on free-market capitalism. But man, I'm glad I stayed for the juicy stuff.  Much like 'The Bee Sting' by Paul Murray, characters are painstakingly crafted, given life and depth, and hours go by as we marinate in their lives. In the end everything culminates in a perfect storm, where planted seeds sprout and explode and we are blown away by the execution. The perfect ending.  This book is incredibly profound, for want of a better word. I will think about this for days. An exceptional piece of literature, if you are in the mood for such a meaty endeavour.

MY HEAD IS EXPLODING! 🤯 Is there a right place to begin with this finale for this series other than Estalyn went out with a bang for this one! She pulled insane plot twist after plot twist. Although that last and final one seriously left me gasping! This second part picks up with Jason continuing filming his movie, which takes you on a wild cruise to Europe! The horrible things Kyle has planned and what his partner in crime decides to do left me shaking. I thought the story was about to head in a totally different direction when we discover how strong Hayley is becoming. After a turbulent cruise that pushes Jason and Skylar’s marriage to its breaking point, we end up in Paris where romance rekindles, but don’t think the afterlife is settling down. Dave test the limits of a hidden gift Skylar inherited from her father and once again my mind was blown! I’m about to get to my last point in this book that will rip your heart out and flip you upside down. The dream, the nightmare that we’ve seen all the way through, just hold on because you will be sweating bullets! I yelled, screamed, cried, then sat there motionless with the captivating ending Estalyn weaved together so perfectly it can’t be touched by no one else. Also, that sneak peek of the next book after the five year jump, seriously has my mouth watering for more. Outstanding job to the author for writing such an impeccable series that I have never read anything like before. Happy publishing day to this 5⭐️ fever dream of a book from the ever-brilliant and absolutely bonkers mind of @willrdean!! When I reviewed this a few months back I said it was a 😮😬🫨😳🫣🤯story….. in the best and most mind boggling of ways. I totally stand by this assessment. This story is wild and chaotic and terrifying and claustrophobic and so, so intriguing to read. If anyone could ruin a beach day, leave it up to Meursault to do it. I can say with utmost confidence that this is the story that made me pursue an English Literature major. I spent hours thinking about Meursault, and trying to make sense out of it all. I didn’t know what to do with all my thoughts and claims about The Stranger. Naturally it was the first book I chose to discuss in my theory course. What isn’t said in this story is as important as the words Camus wrote down, maybe even more. If you’ve not read it yet, don’t be fooled by the slimness of it, this story packs a lot. Be ready to let it live rent free in your head. If you’ve read this, I highly recommend reading The Meursault Investigation. 🇩🇪🇮🇱 Book Review 🇮🇱🇩🇪 5⭐️ “…under the existing Nazi legal system he had not done anything wrong, that what he was accused of were not crimes but “acts of state,” over which no other state has jurisdiction…that it had been his duty to obey…he had committed acts “for which you are decorated if you win and to the gallows if you lose.”” “…the truth was that he had no authority to say who would die and who would live; he could not even know.” “Eichmann…insisted that he was guilty only of “aiding and abetting” in the commission of the crimes with which he was charged…” “The trouble with Eichmann was precisely that so many were like him, and that many were neither perverted nor sadistic, that they were, and still are, terribly and terrifyingly normal.” 🤯 I may have taken six months to read this book, but let me just say that my reading pace has nothing to do with how mind-blowing this report is! If you’re fascinated by human behaviour and psychology, you should consider reading Arendt’s report. In a nutshell, Adolf Eichmann oversaw the deportation of millions of Jews to extermination camps. He escaped Germany after WW2 by moving to Argentina, but was later captured by Israeli agents and brought to Israel to stand trial in the early 1960s. A “normal” man who just followed Hitler’s seems hard to believe, right? Would you believe me if I said that Eichmann would have killed his own father if he was ordered to do so? Or, that he could not stand the sight of blood? This is a disturbing and informative read. I not only learnt about Eichmann, but also learnt about the precedence his trial created. “(What are we going to say if tomorrow it occurs to some African state to send its agents into Mississippi and to kidnap one of the leaders of the segregationist movement there? And what are we going to reply if a court in Ghana or the Congo quotes the Eichmann case as a precedent?)” Thanks for putting this book on my radar @bookish_pisces - my mind is still reeling! 🤯

Interrupting my usual feed to tell you about this book: The Ferryman by Justin Cronin. . For the life of me, I cannot remember who on Bookstagram first told me that Cronin had a new book out, but I am forever grateful he did. WHAT A BOOK. . I read my copy on my Kindle, but this book is a doorstop at 536 pages(pictured here at Exclusive Books). I don't want to give too much away because I think if you go in blind you'll get more out of it. Suffice to say, the first three quarters had me completely baffled but completely gripped. Then all was revealed, and I was MindBLOWN. It was an unexpected and brilliant piece of storytelling, and I absolutely loved it. . If you haven't read his books before, you are in for a treat. I am now rereading The Passage, the first in a Dystopian trilogy, which I never finished... and once again, I am gripped! . A FLICKER IN THE DARK by Stacy Willingham 🕯️ THIS BOOK. 🤯. I was pulling my hairs out, grinding my teeth, rushing through the pages and having to back track because I couldn't remember what I was reading and the details were a blur. This was that kind of book. And it's been a long, long time since I had read anything that made me cling to the edge of my seat, had me taking breaks from reading and running around the house to process what I had just read. AHHHH I cannot, it was THAT good!!! Ok, that was mostly my emotions haha, but seriously it was soooo good in sooo many different ways. I mean the plot twists kept twisting left and right 😅! One moment I had made conclusions and in the next moment I had to erase all the ideas formulating in my head, because there were other things at hand, evidence that pointed in all sorts of directions. And omggg the way I was mentally screaming at the fmc (arghhh I want to cry 😭😭)!!! I thought her so dumb and stupid for some of the decisions she made, but somehow all of that stupidity worked out and I was so glad for her initial dumb decisions 😂. At other times, she made smart moves that definitely did not work for her and made me understand why she continued to resort to those dumb ones lol. As for the ending, I did not see it coming at. all. whatsoever. You know, throughout the book I thought i was the smart one, because I thought I had figured mystery books out...LMAO I was soooo wrong - I definitely DO NOT have them figured out >_< . As a mother of a son Todd's age, this story really resonated with me. Not only is this a twisty, mind-bending thriller, it's also a love story. No... not a romance novel, but one of a mother's love for her child and a wife's love for her husband. Absolutely brilliant book! 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗞𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝘆 𝗞𝗶𝗮 𝗔𝗯𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗵 Next of Kin is about a woman named Leila who makes a tragic mistake that costs her nephew his life. The majority of the story takes place during her high-profile trial, as the prosecutor tries to prove it wasn't an accident, and Leila fights for her freedom. Someone in a Facebook reading group recommended Kia Abdullah to me years ago as "the best thriller author ever!" Unfortunately, it was difficult to get her books in the US at that time, so I was never able to read anything by her. Fast-forward to April and @marensreads put her back on my radar, and I am SO grateful she did! I binged Next of Kin on audio in half a day, and OMG!🤯 When I finished, I just sat there with my mouth agape! This captivating, heart-pounding, courtroom thriller is absolutely MAGNIFICENT! 📚 Review 📚 Rating: 🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋 Pub. date: May 25!!! For weeks after reading Yellowface, the only thing I was able to verbalize to my book-loving friends was - MIND. BLOWN. I needed to sit in my feelings and digest many different aspects of this story. This was a deceivingly quick but deeply uncomfortable and multilayered read. Additionally my first impression was a certainty that yes, without a doubt this book will be popular and successful but beyond that it will polarizing and most definitely talked about. Though the story is full of unlikable characters and deeply uncomfortable topics, on occasion I still found myself (quite involuntarily and pretty sure as a result of a skilful literary manipulation) rooting for Juniper not to get caught. Gasp. One of my favorite things about R.F. Kuang's writing is that she doesn't dumb things down for her reader. She just leaves you to ponder seemingly endless number of complex topics. Not just about identity, race and representations but who decides what is appropriate, in literary world, in (social) media and in life in general. These intricacies really resonated with me because it's quite similar in the world of social justice - not only are we constantly attempting to challenge and change the existing system but there is also an internal system of "rating" and judgment of what and how you are supposed to be. This story will make many readers uncomfortable but explorations of racism and systems rooted in inequality and propped up by white supremacy are MEANT to be uncomfortable. In words of R.F Kuang "If reading it feels a bit like watching a train crash in slow motion, then I’ll have done my job." If you want a read that will take you for a loop, make your head spin and leave you thinking about it for a long, long time, then this is a book for you. I thought it was beautifully written, well thought out and truly impactful. Another one for the ALL TIME FAVORITE READS shelf. Just a note for fans of Babel and The Poppy War trilogy - this book is a completely different beast! I stumbled upon this one in the Audible library, and while I am hardly ever in the mood for a political book, took a chance on it. I’m several hours in and it is blowing my mind. . I was born in Mobile, Alabama, and loved the first 24 years of my life there. My mother was Ohioan of German descent and my father was a Romanian immigrant as of 1975. His family settled in Mobile because their sponsor lived there. I was born in 1992. . I say this to show that we never had the “Southern Roots” my classmates did. I spent 24 years observing “white culture” or particularly “white redneck culture” and “southern black culture,” as I grew up in the hood, on a dead end street, in a sort of trailer park. . This book has given answers to the things that were in-front of my nose the first quarter of my life. And I’m perhaps only a quarter of the way through it. . It’s not an intellectually heavy read. My dms are still not loading and it’s driving me crazy! I’ve done everything possible to fix it and nothing has worked. The Other Side of Night by Adam Hamdy is a book that took me by surprise. It definitely won’t be a book for everyone, but I don’t think you’ll really know if it’s for you until you read it. We are following a woman who was in a relationship with a man a year ago and at this time is no longer with him. She’s also been removed from the police force for reasons that will be revealed throughout the book. One day she picks up a used book about happiness and sees a message that will lead her back to a case where a wife died from cancer and the husband killed himself shortly after. She’s wondering if there’s more to that case and the man she was dating is oddly connected to the family. ❤️Review❤️ This was a truly unique book. I was so entranced by this one. I kept saying how I couldn’t put it down, but I didn’t know why. It had me under a spell where I needed to finish it all in one day. It’s a short book that lends itself nicely to a fast read. The ending had my mind blown 🤯! I definitely had no clue that type of ending could even happen. So I wouldn’t consider it a book that’s easy to predict. Definitely a book that could inspire some deep conversations. I was recommended this book by @libri_et_felicitas a while back and I decided to dive in after seeing it on several local book related groups and posts recently. I was told this book was literally a ‘trip’ and at first I was skeptical about it. I was so wrong. I think that this book, in the way that it is written, and the whole plot is simply genius. The story grips you immediately and it moves swiftly and purposefully. The resolution is bittersweet. There is not much else to say from my part that can do it justice. I loved it, and I thought I wouldn’t like it since it is not the type of book I usually read. A week into the new year, here is a trio of books that have earned their spot on my shelf. They feature three young men with great trust that the mystery of life has their backs 💕 Each young hero has embraced the unprovable, resting in the knowledge that they're part of something huge that defies explanation. For if we could wrap our heads around it, it wouldn't be huge and transcendent. I guess you could call them young men of great faith, which explains my fascination for them. 💞 Piranesi - can't wrap his head around the great mansion of statues with rising tides where he finds himself prisoner. But he chooses to trust that the House's intentions toward him are personal and benign. 💞 Pi - has a great spiritual seeking heart and his ordeal on the ocean in a lifeboat challenges us to reflect what we believe, and whether or not a story with wonderful animals (so to speak) is preferable to one without. 💞 Alyosha Karamazov - maintains his steady faith in a God who stands behind history and the unfolding of all things, even while his brilliant and sceptical brother Ivan is chewing his ear to forget it all. But Alyosha's reasons for hanging on are ones Ivan can give no credence to because they're beyond the grasp of the human intellect. I imagine getting all three of these main characters together and listening in to their conversations, which would have to be amazing 😉 Have you read any or all of these? Oh, and can you suggest any other like-minded book characters who might like to join their party?

Well, what with working on my new book, I thought I might take the opportunity to look back on (and shamelessly self-promote 😂) my first book. Apocrypha wasn’t the first novel length work that I wrote, but it was the first good enough to publish. Took me the better part of a year, and it isn’t a very long book. I learned a lot writing this, and I’ve learned a lot since. Although there may be some things I might do differently now, overall I still think, or like to think 😅, that this is a pretty strong effort. I don’t have kids, but even if I did I’d still be prouder of this book than them. 🤣 If nothing else I like to fancy that Apocrypha is at least ambitious. Simultaneously a work of post apocalyptic fiction, science fiction (with an emphasis on the science), philosophical fiction, and metafiction, I do assert that the denouement is one you won’t soon forget. 😏 So, if you’re in the mood for a mind altering indie book with some nifty implications, maybe give Apocrypha a look! Mind Blown Monday 🤯 Back at it again with my made up stack themes but whatever we’re here now 😂 Out of all of the books I’ve ever read I think these four books have the biggest and most intense mind blowing endings (for me personally). Consider me officially blown away. This is the best Chad Lutzke book I’ve read so far, and from the first one, I’ve considered his books/novellas fantastic. This one had my eyes tearing up from feels on one page, then had me laughing the next. What a great story and unexpectedly emotional horror book. 🥹 When I saw the very high rating for this novella on Goodreads, I figured it was because Lutzke is somewhat of a niche author with dedicated fans, but the rating is 100% accurate. This is horror with a heart, and the author’s hauntingly beautiful writing style is there the whole way. ❤️ As you know from the synopsis, Levi is 16, and he has a skull for a face. He’s lived in a kind of orphanage his entire life, but he decides to peace out and head to Hermosa Beach, California. He’s heard a rumor of a man who lives there, and this man also has a skull for a face. Could this man be his father? ☠️ This story is about Levi crossing half the country without much but the clothes on his back and a book. During his travels, he meets several people, and we get glimpses into all kinds of characters - the kind of characters that one might see when traveling by foot and hitchhiking. These people were all written so well, despite space limitations. Some of them only lasted in the story for a page or two, but they were all great characters who added a lot to the journey. I’m always amazed by how well Chad Lutzke writes fully-developed characterizations of people within the confines of a novella. 📖 I love coming-of-age stories mixed with horror, and few do it as well as this author. Don’t worry about the “horror” part if that’s not your typical genre - it’s pretty tame. The Last Housewife by Ashley Winstead - WOW! This book was bananas! Definitely a lot of trigger warnings so look into that before reading. This is a book that isn't for everyone but it was definitely for me! I enjoyed her other book In My Dreams I Hold A Knife and after this book she will absolutely be an auto-buy author for me! REVIEW :: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ Every time I tried to read the synopsis for SEA OF TRANQUILITY, my brain turned off halfway through. For some reason, I could not seem to comprehend what on earth this book held within its 255 pages. Luckily for me, I have very little self control and when @natashaniezgoda casually brought it up, I purchased it on a whim. So for those of you who, like me, struggled with the synopsis and wrote it off, let me give you a simple overview. SEA OF TRANQUILITY manages to transport you between multiple characters over the course of thousands of years. You will spend the first half of the book completely at a loss for how any of these characters and their stories will make any sense together in the long run. And then all at once, I promise, you’ll start to see what’s happening here. It is so much more than a sci-fi novel. By the end, EMILY ST. JOHN MANDEL will have you completely in awe of her brilliant, brilliant mind and incredible storytelling. I am beyond grateful that I followed my gut and took a chance on this book. If you’re not totally sure if it’s for you, but something is telling you to go for it anyway, I’ll add to that little voice inside and tell you to do it. Take the chance. As Natasha said to me when she unintentionally talked me into a book purchase, it’s less than 300 pages. Worst case scenario? It’s a quick read and then you never think about it again.
