On April 16, 1689, we lost Aphra Behn. Born on December 14, 1640, Aphra was an English poet, playwright and authoress from the Restoration era most remembered for 𝘖𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘬𝘰: 𝘰𝘳, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘰𝘺𝘢𝘭 𝘚𝘭𝘢𝘷𝘦 which is generally considered the first English novel ever! It was published in 1688 by William Canning, the year prior to her death. Mrs. Behn was one of the first English women to earn her living by writing, breaking barriers and serving as a role model for later generations of women authors. She came to the notice of Charles II who employed her as a spy in Antwerp. After returning to London and a stay in debtors’ prison, she began writing for the stage under the pseudonym Astrea, the Greek goddess of justice. Being a staunch supporter of the Stuart line, Aphra declined an invitation to write a poem to the new king William III (mentioned in Gone with the Wind as William of Orange). He certainly loved to make fools other whether in person or in the printed form of a pamphlet. One of his targets was the man pictured on this cup/tumbler/beaker/lemonpossetcontainer (having watched countless #timeteam episodes I am still vague on terminology). In the 1930s, Graham Greene wrote the draft of a biography of Lord Rochester, whose poetry he greatly admired. He then left it in a drawer until 1974, suddenly deciding that the time was right to publish it. Lord Rochester’s Monkey may not be as comprehensive or as well researched as Blazing Star by @alexlarman but it is more of a coffee table book about the syphilitic poet, rakehell and gadabout in the court of Charles II, with tons of illustrations, maps and photographs of Rochestalia. History remembers him as the author of some of the most vulgar poetry in literature. John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester (1 April 1647 – 26 July 1680) was an English poet and courtier of King Charles II's Restoration court. The Restoration reacted against the "spiritual authoritarianism" of the Puritan era. Rochester embodied this new era, and he became as well known for his rakish lifestyle as for his poetry, although the two were often interlinked. He died as a result of venereal disease at the age of 33. Rochester was described by his contemporary Andrew Marvell as "the best English satirist," and he is generally considered to be the most considerable poet and the most learned among the Restoration wits. His poetry was widely censored during the Victorian era, but enjoyed a revival from the 1920s onwards, with reappraisals from noted literary figures such as Graham Greene and Ezra Pound. The critic Vivian de Sola Pinto linked Rochester's libertinism to Hobbesian materialism. During his lifetime, Rochester was best known for A Satyr Against Reason and Mankind, and it remains among his best-known works today. Get Out (2017) Genre : Horror Rating : 10/10 A man takes a weekend trip to meet his girlfriend's family. The first impression is that everything is normal, but he is unprepared for the horrors that lie ahead. Alright so I watched the movie when it came out and I didn’t watch it alone, we watched it in a group. I had been planning to rewatch the film because I wanted to appreciate it more, I was really glad that I did. The directorial debut of a comedian-turned-filmmaker is a brilliantly written and directed thriller that provides much-needed social commentary on race relations in America by showing the deeply ingrained fears Black people have in a predominantly White society. In order to explore issues of racism, personal demons, suburban paranoia, and the dark sides of elitist rich Americans, the film takes creative liberties by over-exaggerating the fear our main protagonist feels by placing him in an extraordinary scenario, with a breakout performance from Daniel Kaluuya as Chris Washington. Everyone else also gave outstanding performances as members of the Armitage family, making them seem like a normal family with some odd quirks but also unsettling enough to let you know that something sinister lurks beneath the surface, and Lil Rel Howery provides the perfect comic relief by giving voice to everything the audience feels a little bit. The film's Oscar-winning script adds the finishing touch, as it was so rich in detail and nuanced that repeated viewings reveal just how meticulous it is.
