Learning not to rush through life 🙂. Taking my time and slowing down may not be the most difficult thing to do, but when life demands so much, it’s hard not to rush through life. I’m grateful for having a healthy body and being resilient enough to get through some challenging times in life, and I sometimes forget about all of that in pursuit of the next big things. I forget to celebrate the day-to-day blessings. This weekend has been so good for my mind, body and soul - I did the things I love, at my own pace, from working out, reading, seeing some art to spending time with some lovely humans. I’m grateful. They’re really the things that matter. “Take your time, you’re not hurting anybody by going slow. Stop rushing through life, and wishing time away because there is so much more to it than only ever catching glimpses of its beauty. A beauty that shows itself to you only when you sit with it, and let those moments remind you that you are so much more than just a spectator, you are a part of everything. We will all have moments that leave us asking for a sign, a sign that we are moving in the right direction. A sign that we are moving at all, and not just standing still-but when you rush through life, it becomes a blur, a blur that leaves you thinking nothing has changed, a blur that keeps you chasing that feeling that only a drastic change can bring. Maybe your radical change will be learning how to stand still, because it’s not always about getting the sign that you asked for, but more about how it made you feel when you finally got it. On the contrast between spontaneity and planning. When looking at Auerbach’s charcoal heads and how they show a lot of elements of constant rubbing and reworking, one couldn’t help but think of his planned approach and how meticulously he must have been in ensuring details are depicted the way he intended them to be. However, there are also some works that show elements of spontaneity. Such as this one. ‘Head of Julia Il’ (1960). Julia Wolstenholme was Auerbach’s wife who also modelled for him for over 40 years. At first glance, this portrait looks similar to others, but as you look closer, you notice the strikes of pink added to the portrait, which Auerbach did at the end, having redrawn this too many times. The pink is supposedly an improvised gesture demonstrating spontaneity. Undoubtedly, when you think of his considered way of working, this spontaneity is a real surprise. In a good way, of course. I also wondered what it’s like between the couple who separated not long after their marriage in 1958, only to be reunited in 1976. She’s seen to face downwards and I wondered what she’s thinking about. It’s really interesting to see how Auerbach has chosen to portray her in such a way, but it’s not a look of a sad woman, but one who’s pretty resilient. I enjoyed that exhibition tremendously. It ends on 27th May.
