Death Valley National Park is a world of extremes. It's home to Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America, at 282 feet below sea level. It is also the driest place on the continent, with several areas receiving less than two inches of rain each year. And it's home to the hottest temperature ever recorded when in 1913 it reached 134 degrees Fahrenheit at Furnace Creek. However, this seemingly barren and desolate place has a lot to offer. Must-see places include Zabriskie Point, Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, Artists Palette, and the aforementioned Badwater Basin, which on rare occasions will fill with rainwater and form Lake Manly. If you want to venture into more remote sections of the park, you can visit The Racetrack, known for its rocks that seem to mysteriously across the valley floor, and Saline Valley Hot Springs located about 35 miles from the nearest paved road. Or if you're craving the alpine, embark on the 14-mile round trip to the summit of Telescope Peak, the highest point in the park towering 11,049 feet above sea level. After sunset, the stars become the main attraction, lighting up the night sky without light pollution to obscure their glow. Popular activities within the park include hiking, backpacking, biking, off-roading, and camping. In fact, there are many campgrounds throughout the park, ranging from established sites with showers and flush toilets to primitive spots with no amenities at all. Born Gee Mei Gue, Maggie Gee was one of only two Chinese-American women to serve in the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). Gee was born in Berkeley, California in 1923 and her family often made trips to the airport in Oakland, California where she would look for her idol, Amelia Earhart. Gee enrolled in University of California, Berkeley’s physics program, but left school to work alongside her mother at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard at the beginning of the Second World War. She saved her money from the shipyard for flying lessons and earned her pilot license just six months later. Gee joined the WASP training program which ferried aircraft from factories to air bases and trained male pilots in mock air fights. Gee helped break down barriers in a society that didn’t think women were fit for military service, especially Asian women. But Maggie Gee found great success in her career with the U.S. military and later reflected, “I consider myself very fortunate, that I could do something that I really enjoyed. I felt I was doing something for my country…” In 2010, Gee and other WASPs were awarded the Congressional Medal for their service in WWII. Who inspires you? The National Park Service has abandoned its plan to remove wild horses from Theodore Roosevelt National Park following public outcry. The NPS is concerned about the environmental impact of the non-native animals, but many residents and visitors were outraged that the NPS would even consider such an idea involving the beloved horses. About 200 horses roam the North Dakota park. That number, however, could still be considerably reduced through a management plan to protect vegetation and native species. Those details have yet to be worked out, but U.S. Sen. John Hoeven (R) said he secured a commitment from the National Park Service to keep wild horses in the park. “People love horses,” Hoeven told the Associated Press. “And where do you go to see wild horses? I mean, it’s not like an easy thing to do, and most people don’t have horses, and they love the idea of wild horses. Dates opening for reservation: - Paradise Corridor: August 1 - September 2, 2024. Reservations for May 24-July 31 for the Paradise Corridor are also still available. - Sunrise Corridor: August 1 - September 2, 2024. Reservations for weekdays July 4 -July 31 for the Sunrise Corridor are also still available. For information on timed entry and to see a list of frequently asked questions, visit the park website: https://go.nps.gov/MORATimedEntry.
