B had his first dentist appointment today, and it went okay. We had a lot of talk about the dentist, the whats, and the whys of the process. My children have been under the special care dentist in our city since L was about B's age. The dentists there are trained in SEN, so appointments are longer to accommodate the patient's needs. When she called B in, she could see he was nervous and took her time with him. She allowed him to press the buttons for the chair, let him hold Paddington, and checked his teeth in intervals that B was comfortable with. Luckily, no dental work needed just a check-up at the end of the year. As someone who undeniably feels increasingly frustrated with our inadequate education system, I’m struggling to express my thoughts without succumbing to an uncontrollable rant, but strap in and let’s give it a go.. Our education system is unequivocally broken. It’s catastrophically failing to meet the diverse needs of thousands of children and young people. ‘Attendance Matters’ - when it’s convenient to the Local Authorities and Government. Thousands of children with SEN are without school placements simply because mainstream education cannot meet their individual needs. Our children are in the midst of a rapidly increasing mental health crisis along with inadequate pediatric health services impacting their physical health, both of which lack the funding and resources to provide children with the support needed to enable them to gain an education. It is imperative for the government to acknowledge the inherent flaws within our education system, recognizing its obsolescence and, at times, its barbaric approach. This is fundamental, as the evidence shows the concerning yet increasing amount of school absences, not only due to family holidays but by systematic failings of the education system. And threatening families with criminal records due to a child’s absence, even if it IS because of a family holiday, is frankly ludicrous!! Children gain immensely from spending time with their families, immersing themselves in diverse cultures, foods, and languages. Experiencing time together to connect and nurture their physical and mental well-being will forever far outweigh sitting within the confines of a failing classroom. So while this isn’t my usual ‘playful’ content, I do feel infuriated with this topic, education matters, attendance does matter but at what cost? I feel this is something we all need to stand up and find our voice with because ultimately it’s our children who are suffering! B trialled breakfast club this morning, and I'm hoping he that he coped well. He was grumpy going in and adamant that he didn't want to, but he's like that trying to get him going in at normal time. It's been a struggle trying to get B out of the car in the mornings, and recently, he's been trying to punch or kick the people surrounding him as we wait for the gate to open. A Parenting Fail 😢💖 As you all know the kids have been going to swimming lessons for quite some time, with the Boy really excelling and moving up the stages really quickly but for the Girly it’s been a challenge every single week and we’ve decided that it just isn’t the right time for her to be having actual lessons with so much structure. She absolutely loves the water, especially when we all go swimming and when it’s just all about fun, she has so much confidence in the water and no fear, which is exactly why we wanted her to have the lessons in the first place to help keep her safe but it just hasn’t worked our. She really enjoys the idea of going to swimming lessons but the truth is that the “lesson” part is just too much her to cope with and she ends up so overstimulated that she doesn’t really listen to the instructor and just keeping her in the pool is a battle. It’s by no means a negative about her, as she is a superstar, it’s a failing on our part for thinking she was ready for this level of concentration. I feel absolutely awful about the whole situation though, as we now need to work it out so the Boy can still go without the Girly being upset that she stops her lessons. It’s one of those parenting guilt situations that there is just no textbook to tell you what to do and how to resolve it. But, I will take comfort tonight in knowing that we aren’t the only ones that have ever got it wrong about their kids and remain focussed on all the areas that she is really doing well with at the moment 💖 x #senparents #neurodiversekids #senchildren #swimminglessons #parentfail #remainingpositive

Seeing everyone celebrating their choice of school yesterday had me thinking back to this time last year and how our emotions were literally all over the place. We were happy we got the school we wanted, we were excited for Elsie to be accepted and given a chance in a #mainstreamsetting we were sad that our girl was old enough to be starting school and we were petrified of how she would settle and whether she would make friends. As we all know Services for those with sensory impairments is already chronically underfunded. Currently there is around a nine month wait for mobility training and other rehabilitation services for people with visual impairments. One of the proposals in Birmingham city councils recent budget was for a review of the enablement team which provides much needed services for those with visual impairments, hearing impairments and learning disabilities (and any combination of these). Given proposed savings of 26 million to adult social care , including 6m from home care services , this is very concerning, particularly as many of these services are statutory under the Care Act . Brum Rise Up is a group of campaigners from Libraries, SEND, Children’s Services, Adult Social care, Musicians, Actors, Council workers and more. All working together, fighting against the Council cuts. Join us on Saturday 27th April for our campaign launch and organising meeting in town. We will hear from a panel including Carl Chinn and then have time to work in small groups on actions we can take in the coming weeks and months. I have been debating with myself for a while whether to share our journey, this rollercoaster life for a long time. I feel I should not hide away from our families daily struggles and magical moments that having two children on the spectrum bring. Still after having one child officially diagnosed 6 years ago and the other STILL waiting for assessment, a daily struggle for acceptance is still VERY much out there! Our youngest who has been on the waiting list for 2 years has been told that it will be at least another 3 years for his first assessment! This is shocking to think a service that is desperately needed is very much on its knees! It's been a long afternoon for Harper. After starting her new medication, we have found she sleeps that little bit more during the day. Hopefully, that will ease away over time. We are finally seeing some improvement in her seizures. They aren't happening as often and are getting smaller. We can only hope it will stay that way and the medication continues to do its job. We are still awaiting her MRI appointment after finally getting her doctors to agree to do one. They were a little reluctant due to her age, but given the circumstances, they agreed it was needed. As a parent carer, stress is normal. You’ve possibly even forgotten what it feels like not to feel a certain level of stress. Stress becomes an issue when you get stuck in the stress cycle or live with chronic stress, as many SEN parents do. Physical movement is one of the best ways to reduce stress and that doesn’t mean only non-stop vigorous exercise like running or going to the gym. There are so many other fun and easy ideas you can do to move your body. Whether it's skipping rope in the garden, swimming with your child, or dancing routines together, finding moments of movement can massively help alleviate stress. If you can incorporate sensory activities like or jumping on a trampoline or crawling through an indoor obstacle course, it’s another fun way to make sure your child gets the sensory input they need, too. This week is so important to families just like mine ❤️ Our little boy is currently waiting on his assessment for autism but we know that he is autistic 💙♾️ that diagnosis will not change him or change us as a family because this is who is ❤️ But even in 2024 people are not understanding or accepting of children just like our little boy 😪 and it is heart breaking 💔 He may not understand if he is been stared at or comments are been passed about him because he is in his own beautiful world 🌎 but we do see and we do hear and it is very hard 😔 If I can just ask one thing is to think before you stare at a child because they aren't behaving in the 'typical way' or make comments about a child relying on a tablet when out in public you have no idea what families like mine are going through so please be kind 🥺 He may be different but that does not make him any less than anyone else ❤️♾️ I will advocate for my little boy for as long as it takes for this world we live in to be a more accepting place 🌎💙♾️ #worldautismweek #worldautismawarenessday #autismawareness #autismacceptance #neurodivergent #neurodiversity #senchildren #inclusivity #autismacceptanceweek

Happy world autism awareness day to my 2 boys hunter and Noah. Every day is a new challenge but we strive and carry on. Myself learns new things daily about autism and my boys sensory needs, difficulties ect. I had 0 knowledge on autism. Until hunter was diagnosed at the age of 2! Noah and Hunter are both non verbal but the complete opposite! Hunter eats for England! Noah eats about 3 selected food products! Hunter is a happy chilled relaxed boy where Noah is a very fierce feisty hot headed boy 🤣. We had the absolute pleasure of working with @autismandourworld to build a bespoke Easter Hamper for Jax and a craft set for Ellis 🐰 Jax has SEN, he’s very tactile and likes ribbons and tassels and the sensory input from chewing. We worked with his lovely mum to create a gift hamper that functionally met his sensory needs and was filled with beautiful quality, handmade products. This really is one of our favourite parts of the business, as two mothers with children either diagnosed as on the spectrum or on the pathway journey it brings us so much joy to create wonderful gifts for these amazing kids!
