Following instruction. It can seem that sometimes you’re stuck in a cycle when you’re a parent of a non verbal or Sen child thinking will I ever hear their voice or how do I know what they want ? But hang on in there because all the little things you’re doing add up and they start taking notice and eventually you see the difference it makes. We have been going to multiple groups and charities for support it’s relentless and honestly exhausting no one is coming to do it for you have to put in the work for me that’s travelling round Birmingham anywhere and everywhere but it’s paying off ! Pathologising demand avoidance... I totally understand why many people want to step away from being pathologised.. to pathologise someone with autism is to look at all their behaviours and behavioural responses as a symptom of a disorder.. it can sometimes take away their humanity and not take into account who they are as a person.. For me personally, I find it beneficial to understand the pathology behind things... I think in the case of PDA.. it's actually really important to look at how differently the brain is wired.. it helps me to stop, when my child is having a heightened response to something, and realise that there is something occurring inside of his body that makes him react a certain way.. It also helps me to pre empt triggers and responses and helps me have more empathy and be able to see it from his point of view. People with PDA have extreme responses to stress and usually the cause of that stress is a lack of control or autonomy. When percieving a threat to their autonomy, their Amygdala, the part of the brain that deals with emotional responses, sends a signal to the hypothalamus (the body's control centre). The hypothalamus sends a signal to the adrenal glands, which then pumps epinephrine (adrenaline) into the bloodstream. This adrenaline activates a fight or flight (or freeze) response which then results in behaviours like punching, kicking, biting, screaming, running away without thinking of other dangers (cars on roads etc). The activation of the Amygdala also shuts down the Pre frontal cortex. The Pre frontal cortex is also known as the rational brain, it's responsible for reason and logic and isn't fully developed in people until around the age of 25. All of this occurs in seconds, it's a subconscious reaction that the child or person has no control over. The child isn't a brat or spoilt and traditional parenting has no effect on the behaviours because the behaviours are stemming from a biochemical response within the body. What the child needs is co regulation and space for their body to go through the processes so the Pre frontal cortex they do have can regain its function. #pdaawareness #asdawareness #pdaparenting #asdparent

Klay will be getting a EHCP 🙌🏽. Happy, elated, overjoyed doesn’t even cut it. I was told it was near impossible and like a golden ticket. I’ve had so many sleepless nights about what else to include, sent strong emails to the school. Basically fought for this. Kirk and I have had meeting after meeting to discuss Klay’s needs. Kirk wasn’t sure we were going to get it but I was certain. I believe when you want something so much, when people tell you “no”. Manifest that. See yourself with it. That’s what I try to do. Bahahahahhahahahahahah. This made me laugh. It’s one of the biggest laughs Ive had recently. The last three weeks have been horrendous. The year was off to a rocky start with Meltdowns, cars blowing up and dogs having accidents… but we got through it. Then the ongoing issues that Jack has been experiencing with his constipation elevated a notch and he got an infection. Yes.. right there. I thought that 2.5 years into my awareness of our ND journey that I had ‘got this’ and as much as I ‘know’ it can stretch our household to limits.. that we can manage and self care our way through it all. And then this happened. And I held and rocked my child on rotation with my husband as he screamed. It’s taken me to a place with my nervous system where I was literally vibrating with stuck trauma - a complex ptsd which has shut me down in a way I’ve not experienced before. Partly I think this is down to my own undiagnosed ND status. My system finely tuned to perceived pain. Taken up to a decibel of a million when dealing with my own child (it also brought into focus many different scenarios that parents have to experience and support their children through 🤯) We have been slowly improving this week. Then I gave Jack a supplement to counter the antibiotics and his bum has flared again. It’s the only new thing this week, so it must have been that and I’m quietly freaking. Of course I’m wanting to run to the hills screaming because I’m not sure we can all manage a rerun of the last few weeks. ⛰️ So. I’m holding onto my hat. I’m toeing the line. I’m crossing my fingers that this isn’t going to be a disaster. Hey, spooniehuns, it's manic Monday. Today, Sammie has been on one. I've been trying to fill in his DLA form, and he's been getting into mischief. Imagine my shock, horror, and frustration when he comes into the kitchen, covered in his own 💩 This isn't the first time Sammie has faecal smeared, and it won't be the last. It's one of his worst behaviours, and I've no idea how to stop it. I bought him some adaptive clothing from M&S, but he still gets into his nappy, and I've tried potty training him but despite showing signs that he's ready, he refuses to take part in toilet training. There’s been very little recently to lift the heaviness of the current challenges that we have been going through. It’s taken all of my bandwidth to work and look after Jack and just deal with the emotional depletion that comes from seeing your child in pain and distress. There has been no let up until yesterday. Jack has been off school for two weeks and we’ve barely been out because of the cycle of what is going on with him has meant we’ve needed to be at home, but yesterday despite the rain we went to the lake to feed the ducks because he was in the best shape he’d been in this entire time. We didn’t stay long but we fed the ducks and Jack even threw some of the bread to the ducks and 🦢 and naughty seagulls! He let me know when he wanted to go back to the car and gave me the biggest head hug when I was strapping him in to the car seat 🥰 The sun came out though when we got home and I said ‘come on then Jack let’s take your rain trousers off’ and he pulled his waterproofs off!!!!!! He needed help for the last bit but that’s the first time he’s engaged and done anything like that himself, not to mention he was following an instruction. It was a wonderful moment. It’s these small moments that are momentous victories in a SEN household. It was enough to explode my heart and a reminder that this crazy life has the potential to lift you on the turn of a sixpence. I hope you are navigating your challenges and powering up where you can. We are on a dog walk, and we find ourselves taking some remarkably good photos of the scenery. I encourage urage it, because quite frankly I am shit at all things art, but have mastered playing around with iPhone photo settings to make even the most boring photo look semi decent. I marvel at the sudden passion, only to be brought back down to earth with an achy leg complaint half way round. By the time we get home, we are “far too tired” to do anything, but there’s a small sense of pride. Happy Monday 💗 long time no post, January is always a busy month for me with appointments & meetings for Olivia almost every week. I've had Olivia's annual review for her EHCP, whilst also trying to get her referred to Cahms, Diabetic Eye clinic & today was her 3 monthly Diabetic clinic too. In between those I've been basically hibernating indoors with the heating on full watching lots of movies whilst praying for warmer weather & waiting for payday. Sunday. Maybe the best day of the week for an #asdparent, maybe the worst. The best because it’s the laziest day of the week. The one where there’s a guaranteed lie-in and plans a few. The worst because this is where the anxiety creeps in. The Monday morning fear. And it can build and build and build, getting so strong that it derails the weekend altogether. So today we will try. Interestingly I’ve been thinking a lot about energy and my complete loss of my energy when I began the process of coming out of denial, and into acceptance and understanding of the journey that I am now on with my Son. I was floored! I was devastated. I was scared at the thought of the challenges that lay ahead forever (or at least until I kicked the bucket and what then!) The enormity of it all was crushing and it knocked me for six. The turning point though was realising that this journey is my new purpose. I had experienced the impact of not feeling like I was alone anymore, that the outcomes for a family who have outside support and knowledge can be further reaching than anyone can anticipate and suddenly the energy tap flipped ON and has energised me to the point of purpose. When we feel stuck and can’t see our way through we become depleted. If we have undefined boundaries with others we become depleted. If we spend time with people who don’t have our best interests at heart and who,even worse, withhold… you will become depleted. Managing our energy reserves so that we can complete this marathon (with the odd sprint thrown in) so that we have enough left over to blossom in our own lives and not be consumed by the experiences, is key 🔑 We can cope with so much. More than we ever think we can, especially if we had known where this was going. We deserve 🏆 most of the time and spinning those plates makes us master jugglers. So I just wanted to remind you how amazing you are. How self care is literally ALL in the mind and how much power you have to lift us all! New start . After 8 weeks off school they have finally started their new school.
