What’s the best recovery position - hands over head vs. hands on knees? Guess which one affords faster/better recovery?⁣ Hands on knees, by a lot.⁣ When you bend over and put your hands on your knees, a few things happen to assist with recovery - you increase the working surface area of your diaphragm, and bracing your arms allows the accessory muscles of inspiration to kick in - all to increase the flow of oxygen in, and co2 out of the lungs. More oxygen equals quicker recovery, basically.⁣ Personally, it’s always been tough for me after a bout of HIIT or after a sprint to put my hands over my head. Why hands on knees is the optimal recovery method for sports/high intensity activities Hands on knees posture causes thoracic flexion & internal rotation of the rib cage. This optimizes the zone of apposition (ZOA) & makes the diaphragm work at max capacity In addition, Hands on knees posture results in a faster decrease in heart rate in between intervals of high intensity work. This is a substantial improvement over hands on head posture Hands on head posture causes thoracic extension & external rotation of the rib cage. The zone of apposition (ZOA) is optimized during flexion, not extension, therefore hands on head decreases the ZOA & makes the diaphragm work in sub optimal positions The diaphragm is the primary breathing muscle located under the lungs. The post 20 miler glow up, tho!! ⭐️ This week was a milestone. I hit my weekly mileage goal of running 70 miles in a week, my highest weekly mileage ever (🤩)! #chicagomarathon Saturday’s long progression run was strong. I found a beautiful flow state, had the best support next to me on the trail and found uplifting cheers by elevate athletes + the Denver running community in the final miles! 😭🥹❤️ Wednesday’s workout was vastly different from Saturday’s long run. I couldn’t find the pace and the entire tempo workout felt HARD! And, this is okay. Training, like life, is not linear. The rule of thirds apply here! @alexipappas!! How many times have you played it safe and everything fell into place the way you wanted it to? Did you get everything you truly wanted by playing it safe? When we choose to play BIG, we will find times of flow, times of low, and times that just feel okay. It’s part of the process. If you play BIG enough times, eventually, you’ll end up winning! When you’re chasing dreams or doing anything hard, 1/3 of the time you’ll feel good, 1/3 of the time you’ll feel okay and 1/3 of the time you’ll feel crappy. If this season of training or life is feeling hard, non-linear or you’re unsure of what’s next, you’re most likely playing the best hand in life, playing BIG. A strong flow state is just around the corner! And, when you flow, you glow! We get to do this!! A big shoutout to the summer training squad who played BIG on Wednesday night, #handsonknees! For years, coaches and trainers have told us that standing upright, putting our hands on top of our head was the best way to open up our lungs, allowing for more oxygen. The truth is that a bent over posture, with hands on knees or hips, better opens up the diaphragm and creates more space for oxygen in your lungs — and better yet, it’s the position our bodies naturally seek when we’re struggling to breathe. By leaning forward, this stance removes some of the pressure to breathe from your lungs and engages more of the diaphragm, as gravity will assist it to move down, thereby creating more space in your thoracic cavity that houses your lungs. The myth of placing your hands behind or on top of your head when fatigued, you stand straight up, placing your back into full extension causes your lungs to be placed in a hyper-inflated position, flaring your ribcage upward and essentially closing it off from effectively expanding as you inhale. As the diaphragm is unable to function properly, neck and back muscles will be put into work to try and take over for the diaphragm’s inability during inhalation. How, then do you catch your breath & recuperate faster? I *distinctly* recall my grade school cross-country Coach telling us to recover after a race by walking around with our hands on our heads, and not slumped over with hands on our knees. He preached it all the time, by saying it "opens up the lungs so you can take in more oxygen". And I remember NEVER feeling like I could recover in that position. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ A handful of much wiser people than myself have finally studied this phenomenon and proven what I've known since I was a child. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ 👉 The proof: Michaelson et. al (2019) compared the effects of putting the hands on the knees vs. on the head for recovery in athletes. They tracked 1) heart rate recovery, 2) carbon dioxide elimination (the rate of exhalation), and 3) tidal volume, or the amount of air the lungs take in while inhaling and exhaling.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ 👉 What they found: the athletes who put their hands on their knees went 3 for 3; they had significantly better heart rate recovery numbers, exhaled carbon dioxide at a much faster rate, and had a greater tidal volume than those who put their hands on their head.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ But, like... why? ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ❌ Basically, when you put your hands on your head, you're pulling your ribcage up, extending your back, stiffening up your backside, and closing off your posterior ribcage. All of these things prevent the ribcage from expanding much during inhalation and, as a result, inhibits the diaphragm (the primary muscle of inhalation) from working efficiently... thus hindering recovery.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ✅ In contrast, putting your hands on your knees "opens up the airways," allows your lungs to fill up with more air, and expands your posterior ribcage to aid oxygen exchange, which gets more oxygen to the working tissues. This puts your diaphragm in a position to breathe more efficiently. Plus, getting out of extension can encourage a parasympathetic shift (from fight-or-flight), which aids in slowing your breathing down.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Want to know more? How may times do you start a "diet" and focus on the weeks you have til it ends? How many times do you put a time limit on your healthy to get there? Talk about pressure friend...I'm not about that kind of life. And I so wish you weren't either. It's exhausting to put a time limit that your healthy needs to happen so you can feel good about that bathing suit or outfit for that special occasion. Let's try MY way shall we? Do it for all the days of your life! Not just the ones that you want to look or feel good for. How about we start and just not stop when the special occasion or summer ends? That way when the next exciting day in your life happens, you won't be spending all the time leading up to it a stressed out mess about a size you wanna be or a way you wanna feel. Spend ALL your days that size with that feeling of feeling good....yes? That's how I live my healthy and I will never go back to that 180 pound sicker than sick Jennie. She wasn't who I was. I *distinctly* recall my grade school cross-country Coach telling us to recover after a race by walking around with our hands on our heads, and not slumped over with hands on our knees. He preached it all the time, by saying it "opens up the lungs so you can take in more oxygen". And I remember NEVER feeling like I could recover in that position. ⁣ ⁣ A handful of much wiser people than myself have finally studied this phenomenon and proven what I've known since I was a child. ⁣ ⁣ 👉 The proof: Michaelson et. al (2019) compared the effects of putting the hands on the knees vs. on the head for recovery in athletes. They tracked 1) heart rate recovery, 2) carbon dioxide elimination (the rate of exhalation), and 3) tidal volume, or the amount of air the lungs take in while inhaling and exhaling.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 👉 What they found: the athletes who put their hands on their knees went 3 for 3; they had significantly better heart rate recovery numbers, exhaled carbon dioxide at a much faster rate, and had a greater tidal volume than those who put their hands on their head.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ But, like... why? ⁣ ⁣⁣ ❌ Basically, when you put your hands on your head, you're pulling your ribcage up, extending your back, stiffening up your backside, and closing off your posterior ribcage. All of these things prevent the ribcage from expanding much during inhalation and, as a result, inhibits the diaphragm (the primary muscle of inhalation) from working efficiently... thus hindering recovery.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ✅ In contrast, putting your hands on your knees "opens up the airways," allows your lungs to fill up with more air, and expands your posterior ribcage to aid oxygen exchange, which gets more oxygen to the working tissues. This puts your diaphragm in a position to breathe more efficiently. Plus, getting out of extension can encourage a parasympathetic shift (from fight-or-flight), which aids in slowing your breathing down.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Want to know more? Having asthma can make getting through humid days difficult. As much as I love the warm weather, humidity can keep me indoors with the AC on (and I really don’t like AC). There is nothing worse than feeling like you can breathe. Cardio workouts can have the same effect on me. I try my best not to let it stop me from doing what I love. This morning was a tough one. I had to pause to hit the ole inhaler. For upstate NY, the humid season is just beginning. I will push through! Do you suffer with asthma? How do you deal with it?
